When I read the synopsis for “The Love Square”, I couldn’t help wondering how on earth was that supposed to work out? Let me tell you ‘the love triangle’ is so passé now; let me introduce you to ‘the love square’.
Have you ever read a book which makes you want to sit down the characters and have a good talk to them? Or, if that didn’t work, smack them on the head to knock some sense into them? “The Love Square” is one of those books.
Some books are driven by the story; some are character driven. I found that although both of these important elements are well written, I thought this book was character driven. I can honestly say that there was not one character in this book I did not like. (Okay, maybe one, but she was a blip on the radar.)
My favourite character was Clare followed closely by Dylan although, as I mentioned earlier, they did frustrate me at times. I suppose it’s liking choosing your favourite child, because I also liked Jenna and Alex. Even the secondary characters were entertaining.
Only one thing irked me a little. I think I would have preferred it, if the story of Clare, Dylan, Jenna and Alex was written over two books. I thought the ending was too rushed after a frustrating build-up and I would have like to have read more about how their lives played out before I reached the epilogue.
I gave The Love Square 4 and a half stars.

Unfortunately I couldn't relate to this story as much as I originally thought I would.
I was getting into it (it was kind of slow, at first for me), but then it all went to a direction I was actually expecting, but that I didn't like.
It was unfair to some of the characters and something that could have been prevented with a good heart-to-heart talk.
And then things get more complicated and there's a plot twist, that isn't really a twist for me. But it was unbelievable. It's not an easy situation, but it all seemed a bit too "easy" and too "right" in the end. It all apparently fit well, but not really for me.

This review was originally posted on my blog.

The Love Square by Jessica Calla was a double love story in one book. It was not a love triangle, it was a Love Square!

Synopsis:
Claire, a small town girl from Nebraska, finds herself living the dream in California. The only problem - she hates it! When she runs into Dylan, her life changes and he shows her California in a whole new light. Quickly becoming best friends, Dylan and Claire fall in love, but neither will admit it. After all, Claire has a fiancé back home in Nebraska.

Alex, Dylan's childhood friend, finds himself in a similar situation. He meets Jenna, a beautiful ballroom dancer who dreams of meeting her prince. Alex scared of commitment and is only interested in women for sex. But, he is immediately enamored by Jenna. The two quickly become best friends, never giving in to the deeper feelings they have for each other.

Everything changes when Dylan meets Jenna. Their instant attraction is hot and both quickly grow serious about committing to each other. Clair and Alex are left wondering if they made the biggest mistakes of their lives by not claiming the ones they love.

My Review:
I stayed up late finishing this book. I kept thinking I could put it down and pick it back up in the morning, but I wasn't able to.

I connected with the characters on a level that had me yelling (almost out loud) at some of their decisions. For me, this is the mark of a good book. If I get upset with the characters, it means I really care about them. I want to shake them and say "Just tell him how you feel!" But, if the characters had listened to me, the story wouldn't have been as compelling. It would have been a short little love story with no conflict. Instead, they fell into a love triangle square that left me happy for them all.

Jessica Calla's writing was wonderful. I envied her seemingly easy ability to display character emotions instead of just telling the reader how they felt. I loved how she made me connect with the characters on an emotional level.

I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more from this author in the future.

The Love Square is a fresh take on your typical "Love Triangle. Calla's novel is beautifully written with emotion seeping off of every page. Everything from the characters to the plot all the way to the intensity level is spot on and absolutely amazing. Calla is a newer author to me as I have only read two of her other books, however if she keeps writing books like this I know many other readers will have this author on their watch list! If your in the mood for a light yet emotional read, this book is for you!

We have all heard about a love triangle, but the love square? Yes, this book is definitely about a love square.

Dylan and Clare meet by accident, literally. She left her home in Nebraska to move to LA. Still new to the city, she bumps into the incredibly hot and sexy Dylan Barnes. They start a friendship that slowly moves into something more. Although neither of them will admit their feelings, they continue their platonic status.

Alex and Jenna meet at a birthday party, since the moment Alex sees Jenna he's smitten, but he doesn't do relationships. He isn't a one woman man. In his mind, he doesn't want to hurt Jenna, so they keep things platonic. (There's a theme here isn't there? LOL)

When Dylan visits his old friend Alex (yup they're friends from school) he meets Jenna. Of course, Clare accompanies Dylan on the trip, and she meets Alex. This is where things get interesting.

I don't want to say too much, but obstacles stop the four from being with the person they truly want. Will the four corners of the square work? Will they ever just open up and admit their true feelings, to the right person?

I enjoyed this book, it was a fun read. There is no cliffhanger.

Sometimes you just want a sweet romance that makes you smile and this was perfect for that…. until Dylan met Jenna. Then the angst began, and I couldn’t take it…. so, I sneaked a peek at the end of the book. Seeing that it had an amazing happily ever after allowed me to continue through the book with ease. I went along for the ride and enjoyed it. The characters are real and alive. I want to be friends with Alex, Dylan, Clare & Jenna. Each one had their own distinct personality and voice.

You know from the very beginning who belongs together and know who you want to root for, but when Dylan and Jenna get together the chemistry between them surprises you. The passion is there, and you don’t know how everything can turn out peacefully.

Jenna unwrapped her arms from his neck to hand him the conditioner. As he squeezed it into his hand and started gently rubbing it into her hair, she embraced him again. She leaned back to rinse it out without letting go and sighed as he ran his hands through her hair to help.

“Do me?” he asked as he reached behind her for the shampoo.

“I did.”

He grinned, and she almost passed out right there in the shower. “I mean my hair.”

“Oh, so you joined me in here to actually get clean, not dirty.” Jenna let go of him and bent her head under the water to rinse more thoroughly

“Maybe we can do both.”

This book was an enjoyable, light summer read. It kept me interested, and there was more than one night that I wanted to stay up reading even though I already knew how it would turn out.

Debbie's Review

This is the first book I have read by this author and probably will not be my last. The story flowed really well and all though I am not a fan of third person because I usually find it hard to connect with the characters I didn’t find that to be true in this book. The authors’ writing was on point and I had no problem connecting with all the characters involved.

The plot in this book was pretty deep and intense at times. I am not going to go into the story as I feel it is not your typical romance novel and you should read the book if you want to know what happens.

I loved that the book had a few unique plot twists and the outcome was not what I expected but it really worked in this book. I will admit a few times while reading this book I saw red and would of loved to beat the crap out of one of the main characters, Alex. His man-whore ways started to piss me off. The chemistry between all four main characters was totally believable and you could not help but fall head over heels with all of them. My heart ached for Clare and even though Alex pissed me off at times, I felt sorry for him too.

I loved that the book was not filled with a lot of useless page fillers and the story moved at the perfect pace where you didn’t have the urge to skim anything.

Overall, the book had me hooked from cover to cover and I truly loved that it was not your typical cookie cutter romance novel.

The Love Square surprised me with its incredibly inventive plot! I love high-concept books, especially those containing romance. I've read quite a few books featuring love triangles--but a love square? It was fun to explore this unique romantic complication, and I think a lot of readers can relate to the characters' struggles and near-misses as they search for "the one."

The tension between the principle couples made me want to shout at them "Just kiss already!" but in the best possible way. :) I loved both heroines and heroes, the various occupations and geographic locations adding interest to the palate. The words seem to unspool from Calla effortlessly as she weaves this tale--a story that is as much about friendship as it is about love.

There's an incredible twist at the end that I won't give away but that sets the boiler plate on the whole thing, and I was tearing through pages to find out what happened. An awesome debut, I can't wait to see what Calla writes next. :)

The Love Square is a peerless NA novel that revolves around four matchless characters who are:
Nebraskan: Clare Davis
Minor League Ballplayer: Alex Popovich
Up-and-coming movie star: Dylan Barnes
Ballroom dancer-slash-office worker: Jenna Stecco
A character driven novel that is told in 3rd person POV. The authors writing style fits perfectly and everything flowed through flawlessly at a perfect pace. This is not your typical romance novel as it branches between California and New York & four mc's. The narrative is very deep & intense at times. All four main character's have believable chemistry and compelling characteristics. The nonpareil plot twists mixed in with the innovative plot creates a well crafted high concept story.

This is a highly talented new adult romance author who creates a story that is refreshing and modernly entertaining.

The Love Square is not like any other book I have read! It's sweet, spice, and everything nice. Jessica Calla has a talent for writing, and needs to continue on things like this. Romance is impeccable, and the writing is good. Plot is great and characters is developed! This may be the first book I read of Jessica's, but definitely not the last.

Oh what a tangled web we weave.... Dylan is into Clare. Clare likes Dylan too, but Clare is engaged to Lucas. So when Dylan visits his childhood friend, Alex, he hooks up with his friend, Jenna. The problem? Jenna is totally in love with Alex! He loves her too but has commitment issues. Let me introduce you, readers, to The Love Square.

I enjoyed this one a lot. I’ve read Calla’s Sheridan Hall series and I really enjoy her writing style. In The Love Square she gives us four really likable characters who just can’t get their act together. Again I’m wishing I could just sit everyone down on the couch for a little love counseling session. Books like this often frustrate me, but in a good way.

Jenna is super spunky, Clare is adorably sweet. Dylan is dead sexy and Alex is a flurry of activity. I love how the friendships grow between the couples so organically. I understand Alex’s fear of taking a step with Jenna only to lose her friendship. I admire Dylan’s respect for Clare’s engagement. So it makes sense that the couples would find it difficult to navigate their way to a happy ending. It didn’t mean I didn’t want to slap them silly for being obtuse some of the time. But I enjoyed it immensely.

Those who are fans of the love triangle romance trope really need to check out The Love Square. It takes the triangle to a whole new plane.

Geometry jokes people.....

Four very enthusiastic stars!

Clever, fresh, witty & quirky fun—squared. Loads better than the usual “love triangle”, hands down. You fall in love with the characters quick. It’s easy to get mad at them for going in different directions than you want them to go. The tension is palpable & I kept yelling at them to “spill it”. You wonder if they're ever going to get it right & are so happy when they finally figure it out.
“The Love Square” just works on so many levels.

I have to admit that I don't really know where to start with this review. The Love Square is my first book my Jessica Calla and it won't be my last. I went into this one not really knowing what to expect, and yet the blurb sounded really interesting. I can tell you that this book will not be for everyone. As the title implies, this is way more than a love triangle and there are many players here. If you don't like angst, drama or complicated love triangles/squares this definitely isn't the book for you. That being said, I couldn't put it down! I love torturing myself occasionally with these types of stories, so while there were things here that didn't exactly work for me I really did enjoy this one.

Having taken a job as a bookstore manager in LA, Clare begins to fear that leaving her life in Nebraska behind was a mistake. She hates California and doesn't know that leaving behind her fiance and family was her best decision. But when she meets model/actor Dylan Barnes, he offers to show her around and help her see how great California can be. The two strike up a friendship and the more time they spend together the more their feelings grow. Meanwhile in NY, Dylan's childhood friend Alex Popovich a minor league baseball player hoping to go pro meets a beautiful ballroom dancer named Jenna Stecco. The two become fast friends and while both of them want to be more, it isn't until Jenna makes her feelings known that Alex makes the mistake of telling her they can't be together. But when Dylan visits NY and meets Jenna, everything shifts as Jenna and Dylan spend the weekend together and decide to pursue a long distance relationship. Though Jenna and Dylan are together, they are both still in love with their friends. Just as it appears that everyone is figuring things out, Jenna shocks everyone with a secret that will change everything once again.

I liked these characters a lot, though I will admit that they were frustrating. The biggest thing that drove me nuts with them was the fact that none of them communicated well at all here. I realize that was part of how everything got so messed up, but it got a bit crazy at times, especially considering how close Alex and Jenna and Dylan and Clare were supposed to be. I absolutely loved Dylan and Clare together. They were perfect for one another and had an easy friendship and connection right from the start, which was amazing considering how they first met! Same goes for Jenna and Alex. They were great for one another and the bond they shared was so obvious. I really enjoyed seeing how everything played out for all of them, and while at first it was a bit confusing who everyone was and what was going on, this story flowed well and was easy to follow after a bit of explanation. I really loved that we got to see the POVs for the four main characters, and I think that helped to really understand and feel invested here.

The one thing I will say is that this story is a bit far fetched and unrealistic. While a bit unbelievable, this story was really good and that didn't matter to me. I took it for what it was and didn't let that bother me. There were times that I would wish characters would speak up and actually talk about things with one another, it was clear to see just how much each of them felt for one another and why they didn't make their feelings known. Each of them had their own insecurities and issues or assumptions that kept them from really being able to go in the direction that they wanted to. As much as my heart hurt for the characters throughout the mess they went through, I hoped that they would all wind up where they were meant to and I think that Jessica Calla did them justice. The ending was very satisfying and while unconventional, it felt genuine. I will look for more from Jessica Calla in the future and I recommend this one if you are open to a different and unique love story.

I have to say when I read the synopsis for “The Love Square” I was intrigued and confused because I just couldn’t help wondering how this would work out. And let me tell you, I'm so sick of reading love triangles now that I hate them with a burning passion, so the ‘the love square’ was a new take I never considered and I enjoyed it.

The new take on complicated love was a breath of fresh air after countless books decided love triangles were the way to go. I followed along with Clare the most of all, especially at the end, sorry you'll have to read to find out what I mean. I agree with other reviewers that I just wanted to sit with characters, especially when all the drama started, and just smack some sense into them. I was dedicated to these characters, and I loved them for who they were separately and together.

While the ending was frustrating to get to, because I wanted to smack some sense into them, I wish it would have gone on longer. I wanted the drama of a big blow up of everyone just figuring it out, but I got the ending I most wanted so honestly I'm happy and I enjoyed the story. I could have read it in one day, but I had school then finals, and then I started summer classes. So I started it and was a little less than half way and then finished it in under a day because I couldn't leave without knowing what happened.

I honestly had a headache because I wanted to scream at them so bad, but is that bad for the book? No. It means I was attached to these characters, and they mattered to me. I wanted them to be happy, and I wanted to push them in the direction to get them there. Well-Written, Well done, and a great overall story.

Great job Calla. I hope you continue to tell more stories.

I had a love-hate relationship with this story, and have debated on the star rating. I've decided on 3.5 out of five stars, and you know I'll explain why.
First of all, two of the four characters in the Love Square (an interesting twist of the love triangle, but still not something I am a huge fan of) were too perfect. And then they did stupid things that were contradictory to their too-perfect natures. Ugh. I was shaking my head.
This was a romance, and as such, I didn't expect it to be anything other than predictable. Kudos to Calla for throwing in a few twists I didn't see coming. It definitely kept me turning pages to find out what would happen.
The sexual nature of the relationships (you know I'm not a fan of reading graphic accounts) bothered me. I'm sure many relationships are based on mutual attraction, especially in the beginning, but I didn't see the perfect characters moving beyond that, and yet they both declared themselves "in love." It was easy to see how it would deteriorate in the end.
I am a fan of friendships turned romantic. This is the sort of relationship that has the potential to last. So, in the end, real love found a way. Thus, I couldn't give the book less than four stars.
Also, I was engaged by the two characters who were flawed in realistic ways. I would have been happy to only read the story from their viewpoints, maybe even stayed with Miss Nebraska for the entire book.
But it wasn't my story to tell.
On the positive side, the writing is excellent. The dialogue and character interactions outside the bedroom (especially in the wider friendship circles) are realistic and entertaining. I enjoyed meeting these characters and would read another story featuring them.

This book was a little on the unusual side. We've all heard of a love triangle, but a love square? There were so many way this book could have gone wrong and spiraled into some torrid, sex for the sake of revenge disaster. But I think the author did an amazing job keeping it classy.
From the very beginning you know who is going to end up together, but when Jenna and Dylan get together it'll throw you for a loop because they really do seem to fall-obsessively-in love with each other. Even though they have jealousy over what Clare and Alex are doing and who they are dating. The big twist ending threw me for a loop, as a matter of fact I'm still not sure I have my head wrapped around the idea. It seems... demented, well ok that is probably a very strong word for the situation but it's not an every day occurrence and there would be so many pit falls over the years that would easily disintegrate the whole arraignment. But it worked, especially for this specific story line.
I felt a little sorry for Alex and Claire, like they should have been given more of a chance to sleep together, just to even it out in the end. Though they each had their own, separate sexual experiences while Jenna and Dylan were together, I guess it's just my warped sense of justice otherwise.
I enjoyed the book, though I can definitely see how it would not be for everyone. It never really got too slow, but it was never action packed to begin with. It was really just one of those real life romance reads. Almost like all the events could happen to the reader or someone they know.

I would rate this more like a 3.75. Which is a weird rating for me but.... I loved Clare and Alex. They were wonderfully flawed. Each of the 4 had some flaws but those two came across as more endearing. In my opinion they were the better people. I loved the individual friendships on opposite coasts but when they all came together it was just off. Now I need to insert my spoilers, Now the ending.... Saw the twist coming but was still a little shocked, and the timeline didn't match up... The one thing about this whole story that rubbed me the wrong way the most was I did enjoy the 2 part epilogue though, that was interesting and new. I was completely wrapped in the story and going back and for between all my hopes for the characters. I finished with a few things I didn't like but overall I was emotionally invested and really enjoyed it.

I'm aware this book has some glowing reviews, and I can't help but wonder why it didn't really click for me.

I couldn't really connect to any of the characters, the writing felt weird to me for some reason, and to be completely honest the whole miscommunication/misinformation thing got on my nerves a little bit.

description

Like, everything could have been pretty much resolved from the start if the characters simply talked to one another. And another thing that was missing for me was the connection between Dylan and Jenna. Like, the other two couples had such a solid foundation built on friendship, love and trust, but for them that connection was missing, so the whole love-square concept felt a bit iffy in my opinion. Still, I'd encourage everyone to judge for themselves.

For me, this one was a swing and a miss (LOL).

My rating: 4

The concept behind this plot was what made me want to read it. It was interesting and I really wanted to see how the author pulled it off! This was my first book by Jessica.

The story is very character driven and it wasn't hard to enjoy these people and to relate to them! Clare and Dylan meet by accident... when she literally smashes her truck into his tiny new car! The banter between these two was so fun! She was new to the city, and allowed a friendship to grow with Dylan who did the best he could to show her around town.

Alex and Jenna met at a party - but he's not the "one woman man" type... eventually Dylan and Alex visit since they are old friends... in which the four people meet each other and things get really interesting and complicated from there.

It was so hard for me to root for just one relationship or another through out the book - all these characters are interesting... and I liked them all. It was a fun story to be a part of, and while it was a tad unrealistic, I really enjoyed it anyway! It is also a stand alone in the sense that it didn't end with a cliffhanger.

I liked this book. It was romantic and funny without turning into the boilerplate porn story that so many romances are these days. Here's the background: Dylan is a movie star who meets Clare who has just moved to California from Nebraska to run a bookstore. She has a fiancé back in Nebraska. She and Dylan become best friends. Alex and Jenna are best friends. She's a dancer, he's a baseball player; they live in NYC. There's some mild sex, longing glances, a few misunderstandings and then, all's well that ends well. But, like all romance novels, we know how it's going to end, it's the journey we enjoy. This is a good journey.

*NOTE: I received this book from the author for a fair and honest review.*

If you like to read love triangles you're going to love The Love Square. This is Jessica's debut novel and she has done a wonderful job making me fall in love with all four characters. This story put me through a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed, got mad and even shed a tear - everything I love in a contemporary romance novel. I connected with all the characters and got three great love stories in one novel. I can't wait to read more by author Jessica Calla.

I was totally hooked by the concept of this book. With four people and three romantic pairings among them, I had no idea how the author was going to give all of these characters their happy ending. The book reads like a romance novel but without the predictability which I found fresh and unique. I've honestly never seen a book like this. I loved seeing two such strong male/female plutonic (somewhat) relationships blossom as these did. I think if you love movies like When Harry Met Sally, then you may enjoy The Love Square. I certainly did.

Dylan, Alex, Jenna and Clare. They are the four corners of the love square. As the story unfolds, and the couple's lives become entwined, I literally wanted to yell at them not to do things, and wanted to cheer when things were going the direction I wanted them to. I think that's a sign of a great story, and a sign of an exceptional debut. I can definitely recommend this book.

A brilliant standalone!
I really enjoyed this from start to finish, loved the characters and where it was set, there was a bit of ‘will they won’t they’ which was a little frustrating but in a good way, you were actually willing the characters to be together. I loved how there were 2 stories blended into 1. I’ll be reading more from this author!

This story had everything for me, unique characters, fun concept, and stellar writing. Calla has a knack for getting the reader so drawn into the story that we feel like friends with the fictional characters and therefore feel the need to yell at them a little bit. But it’s never an eyeroll. It’s a « Stop messing around and be together, damn it! » I truly enjoyed this read.
