Andy Smithson #0.5

Power of the Heir's Passion

Rate this book
Before the adventure, before perilous quests…the short tale of three royal ghosts.

In a land far away, there lived a prince who loved power. Carried away by his lust, he surrendered to its devices and usurped the throne from his older sister in an act of treachery.

Imogenia unexpectedly finds herself in the Afterlife, having to navigate between Peace Paradise, the Unclaimed Baggage department, the Unfinished Business office, and other governmental agencies. Against a backdrop of soul music, she encounters all manner of new experiences from black, frothing, arsenic-spiced drinks to guest services personnel and plays host to the king and queen when they join her. While the medieval spirits are friendly and the experiences memorable, Imogenia has never forgotten the cause of her early arrival in the afterlife, and plots revenge. Her parents initially support a beta test she proposes to the Committee on Afterlife Affairs to punish her brother, the former prince now king, but grow weary of the conflict over five-hundred-years and petition to withdraw their support. What will Imogenia do? How will she realize the justice denied her? How will her actions impact others?

Aside from a few spelling mistakes, I really enjoyed this novella. I loved the creativity and the set up for the series of stories to come. I was definitely drawn in immediately with the imaginative and humorous description of the afterlife opportunities. I've already downloaded the first book and can't wait to begin this adventure!

It's a preview of the first book. I gave it four stars because it starts the first book and it's a pain to go back and find where you were in the book. It overlaps with some of the first book. I read it after I read the first three books, but I enjoyed the story.

I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a prequel to L.R.W. Lee's Andy Smithson series, which I have both enjoyed and reviewed in the recent past. Not only is this a prequel, it also includes the first two chapters of Book 1 in the series.

This time, the story is about Imogenia, a vengeful character in the main series who you don't learn much about. I had interviewed the author recently, during which time she mentioned writing a trilogy of prequels about this particular character. I am looking forward to reading the rest.

Moving on to what I actually thought about the story. As you can see from my rating, I definitely enjoyed it. It explains how the curse on Oomaldee was enacted, and why Andy is the one to break it. It explains things from the series that you may have wondered about. Now, this may make it seem as if the main series is lacking in some way. I can assure you, however, that this is not the case. While you may have been wondering how the curse was put in place, it is definitely more like a mystery which has been solved than a plot hole that has been filled.

For those who don't know, this particular character is dead. And because of this you can see everything that has happened (and is happening during the story) from another perspective. Imogenia herself is an intriguing character, and I'm interested in what happens to her next.

One of my favorite parts was the way the author described the 'afterlife' I suppose you could call it. The various drinks one could have and the customer service desk were just two things that interested me.

I definitely recommend reading this is you are a fan of the series. And if you aren't, you can definitely still enjoy it. It explains any and all necessary backstory, and I doubt that you could be confused.

Reading the rest of the Andy Smithson series will be very interesting with this new-found knowledge.

In Blast of the Dragon's Fury, we’re introduced to ten-year-old Andrew Farrin Smithson, or Andy, a fifth-grader, who lives in Lakehills, TX, with his parents Fred and Emily Smithson and his older sister Madison, as he is transported to the other-worldly kingdom of Oomaldee to help King Heraclon V and wizard Mermin fight the evil King Abbadon of Hadession and break a curse placed on the land. As Andy returns to Oomaldee over the next two years in Venom of the Serpent's Cunning and Disgrace of the Unicorn's Honor, he learns that Heraclon had murdered his own sister Imogenia to claim the throne, which is the reason for the curse, and that he himself is a descendent of the king. His job is to find various ingredients which will end the curse and return everything to normal.

What will Imogenia do about Andy? And how will her actions impact him and others? The books are intended as an allegorical, middle grade fantasy adventure series that entertains while teaching life changing principles. Power of the Heir's Passion is identified as Book 0 of the series, a short prequel novella. It's meant to be a teaser to get folks into the first book, so it also includes chapters 1 and 2 of Book 1. The story is primarily about Imogenia, explaining how her curse on Oomaldee was enacted and why Andy is the one chosen to break it. Thus, it will help to clear up some of the lingering questions from the series that readers may have wondered about. Those who have already read the other installments will not want to pass up this one to learn more information, and those who are new to the series will find it to be a good introduction.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!
***Received the ebook in exchange for an honest review

The cover definitely goes with the story though Book 3’s cover is still my favorite :)

Okay, I think this story clears up some of the confusion surrounding Imogenia’s curse & how Andy play’s into it. This is basically an expansion and more detail of the prologue.

It was nice to get these details and understand the background more.

I recommend this prequel to those who’ve read this series, you do not want to pass up reading this, and if you are new to the series, this is a great way to see if this story is for you though I think this series gets better and better, so keep this in mind :)

Imogenia, a murdered heiress, seeks to avenge her death by placing a curse on both her murderous brother and the kingdom he rules. Power of the Heir's Passion is the story of how and why the curse was placed. This is the basis of the subsequent stories that follow in this Middle Grade fantasy adventure.

Power of the Heir's Passion is a quick read full of witty humor. The place called, Afterlife, is particularly clever, with all the amusing character names (Patty Amnul, social committee, and Sine Ster, Deputy Undersecretary, Hades) and destinations (Unfinished Business Office, Peace Paradise). This is a very good beginning to the series. Recommended for readers ages eight and up.

This book answered all of my questions from the Andy Smithson series, including Imogena's backstory. The first Andy Smithson book lured me into reading the whole series. Then, when I got this prequel, I found out more about the history of these characters. If you haven't read the series, this prequel is a great introduction and you'll probably want to keep reading! (It also includes chapters one and two from Book one as a bonus.) If you've already read the series, it will give you background to fulfill your hopes to know the characters better.

Ms. Lee has written an excellent prequel to the Andy Smithson series. It tells the story of how the curse on Oomaldee was created, and how Andy got involved with it. I like how it doesn’t make Imogenia seem bad at first, (but still hints at it, having her being a tad rude) and the change is gradual. As a fan of this series, this is a great addition! As usual Ms. Lee's writing style is great - she gets you hooked and keeps the action coming. I highly recommend this series.

What do you do when the frosting on the cake just doesn't make you happy? You intro a new Prequel! And here it is just in time for a new batch of Andy Smithson readers, Ms. Lee sent me a copy and I ate the whole thing. Great stuff and I didn't gain a pound!

How it all began... Great prequel. It's short and sweet. You learn details about how and why the curse was started in Oomaldee over 500 years ago. Andy sure has his work cut out for him to stop the curse and kill Abaddon. It's a great series for all ages.

Power of the Heir’s Passion is a novella/short story that expands on the first chapter in the first Andy Smithson book. It goes into detail about how Imogenia’s plan was approved and why after 500 years Andy’s role in the curse was created. It’s an interesting extra bit of information for people who enjoy the Andy Smithson series. I recommend reading it either before the first book or before the third book.

Eh, I don't think this storyline is for me. Now I haven't read any of the other books in this series so can't say how well this fits in. The young female ghost seems to have a vendetta beyond reason. She's not about to give it up until her brother suffers for murdering her. It seemed sort of reasonable at the beginning but 500 years have gone by with no resolution. She should just hang it up.

L.R.W. Lee is one of those authors that I've been following for quite sometime, well since 2013 when she introduced me to her Andy Smithson series. I've been reading and participating in blog tours since then. She independently publishes through CreateSpace and I've enjoyed watching the way she takes her fantasy series and is able to weave in life lessons, while keeping it non preachy with just the right amount of humor. Her newest book is a Prequel Novella, Power of the Heir's Passion and includes the first two chapters of Book 1 Blast of the Dragon's Fury. Power of the Heir's Passion is a re-imaging/rewriting if you will of the Prologue from Book 1 in the series, with some new additions or maybe it's tweaks and more humor. I don't have the two in front of me to compare, but I'm just going to mostly relate the things I noticed this time around. First, I really got a better understanding of why Imogenia wanted to get even with her brother, not just because he stabbed her in the back, but how she hoped to make him have consequences for his actions. Somehow before I also totally missed the idea of the Beta test (was that in the prologue?), but I find it hilarious to think about the curse being in beta testing. I think the various committee members were also added, with names like Patty Amnul on the Social committee and Tor Nado with Media Affairs. They seemed to me more prominent in the novella then I remembered from the prologue. Andy's role in breaking the quest also seemed more clear to me in the novella. Lee takes the time to go back and add some more backstory to her series, tweaking and adding to peak your interest to learn more. Great book for someone new to the series, with enough here for those that have read it before to enjoy. Thanks again to L.R.W. Lee for the ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.

There is a possibility that I should have read Blast of Dragon's Fury to know what I was getting into. But I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Because it follows a bit of a ghostly storyline, one where the dead are involved with those whom are still living, I definitely was hooked. Some of my most favorite YA reading involve points like this. For all you fantasy lovers, this is a great, quick read and you will definitely get a good laugh from it.

Not to give away too much, because some people don't like spoilers, this novella begins with the death of Imogenia, at the death of her brother, Kaysan. I suppose you could say he wanted something in particular, but Imogenia was in the way.

"Imogenia hovered above the slowly fading scene. Kaysan, her younger brother, stood looking at the still form lying on the floor. The corners of his mouth started to turn up in a smile and his eyes narrowed in contempt. Her brain whirled, struggling to put the pieces together."

Imogenia then is escorted to the terminal, where she may choose to Paradise or Hades, and everything else. Due to an almost-vow, Imogenia determined to make her brother pay for her death before she finally chooses to pass on.

Power of the Heirs Passion is a short story.

On to the point, this story gives the history of WHY bad things are happening.

Imogenia dies, because her brother wanted to be king and you know... kills her.

and goes to after life where according to the story, the after life is like an well airport,

at least that's how I think of it.

you can go to the After After Life(Also how I'm describing it in this),

Unclaimed Baggage, Unfinished Business Office, Guest Services,

Employment Office and a Waiting Area.

I thought that was funny.

Not the part where Imogenia dies, the airport like place, thing.

Okay! You know what I mean.

She decides for revenge, (though she doesn't think she does) she wants to teach Kaysan(Her Brother) a lesson.

She must navigate the red tape to send a curse on her land.

but to what end is she willing to go until her anger is quenched?

Cute with chuckle-worthy moments...don't judge this book by its cover.

This isn't the normal genre that I read but the author asked me to read it. Since I was in between books and this was such a short read I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. The characters aren't really likable but I don't think you are supposed to like them. It definitely peaked my interest by not being predictable. I think adults might understand the humor and wit of the author more than a teen. The plot, style, and setting of this book seems to beckon a younger reader while adults would overlook this little gem. Maybe it's just the kid inside me that enjoyed this so much but I'd really hate for adults to miss this just because the cover art and description appear a little juvenile. Give it a try. It might just make you smile. Happy reading my fellow bookworms!

What an adventure

Dragons, curses, family, Destiny. All part of an adventure in one's life but in one place in time. In the quest to help he just may find a lesson or two that needed fine tuning.
Loved it. Now setting off for book two, will also be recommending this book as family-friendly. This would be great to read at bedtime as well.

I read this story prior to reading Blast of the Dragon's Fury (Andy Smithson #1), and I'm glad I did. This was a short read, yet highly entertaining. I am far from being an expert in the YA Fantasy genre, but I know a good story when I read one, and this was one such story. It paves the way for the saga to follow.
