I gave this book 5 stars because I feel it is so important. I've often wondered what I'd be thinking, feeling, believing if I were an African American living in these times, in this country. Now I have a glimpse of what might be going on in my mind, in my heart. The book is powerful, and also, well written. I recommend it to all.

This is the first time I’ve read an autobiography that focuses on racial issues. Coates’ diction is amazing, and he formulates each idea with maximum context and personal narrative. I enjoyed how this story was all a message to his son, by Coates comparing his life to what his son could achieve. Some of the writing was heavy, but when I finished the book I understood an entirely unique perspective about the world.
