I don't normally write my reviews as soon as I finish beta reading something, but this time, I had to! Because I don't want to forget where my thoughts are taking me. Micalea's fans know that this is the second in the spin-off series from the Olivia and Willow Creek series'. This is Liam's story. If you read, The Road That Leads to Us, you know that was such a fun story. An adventure. Well The Lies That Define Us is a little different. It only has hints of the fun (Ollie) that TRTLU had, but that doesn't make it any less amazing. It's darker, most definitely, but I think everyone who met Liam would expect that. It took some turns that I didn't expect and it just left me stunned because it was a different path for Micalea. But I guess I shouldn't be stunned because everything she writes is so great. Micalea's Minions are going to love this so much. I just know it. And I think...it may have just become my favorite of everything she's written...and believe me, there has been some really tough competition.

This was a great story about 2 broken people finding and healing each other. I didn’t read book 1 The Road That Leads To Us before reading The Lies That Define Us but I think there were really no spoilers. I will definitely be going back and reading TRTLTU. I think the characters were well developed. I felt like the ending was a bit rushed. I wanted to feel butterflies once Liam & Ari were able to relieve themselves of their demons and past, but I just felt a little let down. Also, there wasn’t an epilogue. This will not discourage me from reading any of Micalea’s other books because I really did enjoy this.

Wow this book is phenomenal. I was gripped from the prologue and just couldn't put it down, Micalea Smeltzer absolutely floored me with her writing but don't expect a hearts and flowers book as this is full of angst, is dark in places and incredibly emotional.

This is Ari's story and poor Ari has been through so much, she is on the run and also very nervous, scared and haunted by her past and the secrets she holds. Ari hasn't had a chance to live a normal life. She is taken in by Talia and Ollie when they find her lost and homeless. As they don't have room to house her they turn to there friend Liam to Help. I love Talia and Ollies relationship and the friendship they offer to Ari

Liam is awestruck when he first sees Ari, he is drawn to her and attracted to her. Liam has closed the outside world out though and has no intention of letting Ari change that.

I loved how Micalea writes and her way of making you feel the angst and hurt. When Liam and Ari realize how alike they are a real coming of age story develops.

I really liked Ari's fight and fiesty personality and the relationship between these two will have you laughing, Crying and screaming at your kindle.

The dramatic climax to this book had my heart racing and I just could t devour the book quick enough.

An amazing read.

Micalea Smeltzer delivers a heartfelt and emotional journey of self-discovery, friendship, and love with The Lies That Define Us. Liam and Ari are an unlikely pair with an immediate chemistry that easily captivated me. From the start, I was addicted to their push and pull, Liam and Ari’s shared stubbornness lending itself to plenty of tension that inevitably built to steamy levels. Evident from their initial disregard for each other, the unexpected chemistry brewing seemed to unsettle them in a way that made me absolutely giddy to see how things would unfold. Ari and Liam were frustrating, entertaining, and undeniably genuine – taking my emotions on a rollercoaster ride as I experienced their journey alongside them. Well-written, thoughtful, and full of surprises, Micalea Smeltzer continues to wow me with The Lies That Define Us.

After meeting Liam in The Road That Leads To Us, I knew he was a character I had to unravel. Closed off to everything and everyone, Liam clearly held onto something painful that made him jaded. Micalea Smeltzer uses Ari to peel back the layers of this brooding character, unearthing a man with a kind soul and an incredibly generous heart. Ari’s personal journey affected me deeply. There is a darkness in her past that shows itself through small gestures, strange habits, and her timid overall demeanor. Micalea Smeltzer cultivated a character transformation in Ari that is absolutely stunning. When Ari and Liam’s worlds collide, they recognize a pain in one another that inspires an uneasy friendship. I absolutely adored watching that friendship expose something substantial and life altering, leaving both characters irrevocably changed.

Liam and Ari’s story is different from others Micalea Smeltzer has written. It’s haunting in a way that gives this novel an emotional weight I never expected. The mystery of Ari’s past added a touch of suspense and plenty of intrigue, keeping me riveted and determined to uncover the truth. The secondary characters played a huge part in this book and I easily fell in love with each and every one of them. Liam’s close-knit group of friends was absolutely hilarious; they kept me laughing with their carefree attitudes and teasing banter. The easy camaraderie they shared and their unconditional support of one another spoke volumes for the kind of person Liam was and through these relationships Micalea Smeltzer was able to bring this character into sharp focus. The Lies That Define Us is truly a one of a kind journey that will break your heart and make it soar. You’ll fall to pieces and fall in love only to wind up wanting more.

Review by Jen Skewes

The Lies That Define Us is Liam Wade’s story. I could not wait for this one. I was so curious about his character. This is Mathias’ son, so of course I wondered how much like his father would he be but also what was troubling him. When we met him it seemed that he had moved to California and has not been home, in a way pushing the people that he loves away. So I needed to know his story. And Micalea did not disappoint with this one at all. This is probably my favorite book of hers and I have read them all. There is a bit of a darker side to it with some suspense and angst added it, being very different from her other books. But I loved it!!

This is Liam and Ari’s story. Ari has just escaped the hell that she has been living in for the past 5 years. She is now free, but the problem is that she has nothing. No money, no ID, no place to go. She runs into Talia and Ollie, two strangers who want to help her in any way that they can. She really has no choice but to accept their help. While Talia and Ollie’s place is a bit too small for the three of them, they find her a place to stay. Their best friend Liam has plenty of room and he has agreed to let her stay there.

When Ari meets Liam she really is not sure what to make of him. He certainly isn’t the friendliest of people, and you have to wonder how two people like Talia and Ollie who are kind and friendly, are even friends with Liam. But just like Ari, he has his own secrets and demons that he has been fighting. And those demons is what makes Liam the bitter angry person that he seems to be. Well that and let’s face it, he is Mathias’ son.

Ari and Liam have an interesting relationship in the beginning. It would seem that they hate each other. But for some reason Liam likes to push her buttons. And in a weird way I think they have this connection that they cannot explain. As time goes on they learn to open up to each other, fighting their demons together. But Ari is running from her past. And as much as she knows that she has completely fallen for Liam, she knows that she cannot be with him. Her past can hurt him in a very bad way. So she has to decide if she is going to stay or if she is going run from the one man who she has ever loved or felt safe with.

I really loved the chemistry and connection that Liam and Ari had. I saw so much of his father in him but at the same time he as also different. When he finally opened up you saw this other side of him that was refreshing, I guess you could say. I understood completely why he had his guard up. Once you hear his story you will feel so bad for the guy. But Ari was what he needed, was someone that he could trust but as I mentioned she had her own secrets. This girl had been through so much in the past five years but she was so strong.

This book is a little different than what Micalea usually writes. I was completely sucked in from the prologue. I needed at that moment to find out what happened to Ari. You knew at any moment her past would come back and it would come back in a huge way. I was just waiting for it, with the turn of each page wondering if that would be the moment. But when it did happen, oh my God. I never saw it coming. The twists in this book completely shocked me. I had knots in my stomach, tears in my eyes and prayed that it was not really happening. But it did and it’s those unexpected twists and turns in this book that made this story even better.

I had trouble putting this book down from the moment I started reading it. I needed to know if Ari and Liam would ever let their guards own. I needed to know how and if Ari would truly become free. This book had my emotions all over the pace. There was drama, angst and suspense. I not only fell in love with Ari and Liam but Ollie and Talia managed to capture my heart as well. They were the best friends a person could ask for and together they were just so adorable. And I loved that we got to see Mathias and Remy. It is always fun to see the characters all grown up taking care of their won children. Another amazing job!!

The truth is just that–the truth. It’s fact. Indisputable. With lies we can delude ourselves into believing something that doesn’t really exist. If you tell yourself something enough, it begins to feel like the truth, but that’s just another lie.”

“You can only bury the truth for so long because it always comes back, and she was my truth–the future, the life I forced myself to abandon, but there it was right in front of me. Mine for the taking. And I was finally going to claim it.”

“Everyone is a liar. some lies we tell are bigger, and some smaller. A lie, no matter the size, can tear people apart. Lies define us. And me? I was the biggest liar of them all. I lied to Liam. I lied to everyone around me. I was buried so deep in lies that I was beginning to wonder what was real and what wasn’t.”

Absolutely amazing! Micalea Smeltzer has totally knocked it out of the park with this book. The Lies That Define Us is unlike anything she’s ever written. The Lies That Define Us is raw and deep and utterly captivating. From the moment that you start reading Liam and Ari’s story, you become lost. These characters are so easy to connect with and to understand. You can’t help but get caught up in these two guarded, broken characters. You become desperate to know help more. You are desperate for the truth of what haunts them. You want them to break down their walls. And it’s those reasons that make their story become a part of you. Your heart aching for all the pain and heartbreak these two have experienced. But, at the same time, your heart is filling with love and hope. Hope, that these two characters can move past the ghosts that haunt them. Hope, that they will be able to let someone in. Hope, that they will be able to take that risk and fall in love.

The Lies That Define Us is beautifully written and utterly captivating. This story is darker and bit more intense that what we normally see from this author. She took a risk writing this book and let me tell you, this risk paid off. This book took me on such a journey. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It frustrated and angered me. It broke my heart and devastated me. It gave me hope and made me fall so in love. Liam and Ari’s story was so raw and so unexpected. I can already tell you that this will be one of those books that stays with you. This is one of those books that reminds you of just how cruel the real world can be and at the same time open your eyes to the kindness of people you never thought you’d meet.

I honestly can’t say enough about this book. I loved every single thing about it. The story totally consuming me. I highly, highly recommend checking this one out. Micalea Smeltzer has really stepped up her game with this story and I couldn’t be more excited to see where her writing will take us next.

5+++ amazing stars!!!

Micalea Smeltzer is one of my top favorite authors! I was super excited to get more from her and she did not disappoint!! I loved absolutely everything about this book. I would have finished it in one whole setting if it wasn't for work. I was that captivated and enthralled by all the characters. Micalea has a way of sucking you in and making you fall hard for each and every one of her characters.

I love love loved Liam!! After getting brief glimpses of him and his broody nature in the last book, I was super curious to learn more about him and why he acted the way he did. You can tell that he has been hurt by people in his past and he basically just closes himself off to the world, even his family. You can't help but to empathize with him and share in his pain and heartbreak.

Ari, on the other hand, is on the run from some very bad people. After finally getting the chance to escape, she makes it to California and crashes into Liam's very private life. They have instant chemistry although they both try to fight it each step of the way.

Liam and Ari's love story is filled with angst, suspense and insane chemistry! You will be taken on the emotional roller coaster of your life and be on the edge of your seats throughout the whole book. This was a very sweet, emotional, suspenseful read and you won't be able to stop yourselves from falling head over heels for Liam and Ari. I can't wait to see what else Micalea has in store for us next.

I have read all of Micalea's books and have enjoyed each one tremendously and spreading the word to others to read them as well. I describe Micalea as a talented young author who has out done herself on each series she writes.

The Lies That Define Us is is probably my favorite by far since Finding Olivia series. This is Ariella and Liam Wade's story full of dark twists and suspense that will keep you reeling till the very end. I loved it and cannot wait for the next book in the series!

description

I've pretty much read every book that Micaleas as ever written so far, they all have remarkable storylines and characters. But The Lies That Define Us is something else altogether. I admire an author who takes chances in order to give us an haunting tale of love, loss with the right amount of darkness with intrigue and suspense. This is my 6 star review for this amazing, one of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading so far.

I was lucky enough to received an ARC of TLTDU by Micalea Smeltzer in exchange for an honest and spoiler free review. I hope from the bottom of my heart that my review will do this story enough justice.

" Secrets and lies, woven together by fear and hate "

There are so many crazy twists and turns, jaw dropping, knee buckling angst and chilling suspense with this story that I don't want to give anything away.

Ari finds herself homeless and on the run from something so dark that it would have broken any other person but not her. She's afraid, guarded but has spunk and determination. Ollie and Talia save her from being homeless by literarily dumping her on Liam because they see Ari as the perfect match for his broody, negative and obnoxious attitude. Liam as been hurt so deeply that he doesn't know how to be anything but an ass to everyone. Ari doesn't take his crap and is not afraid to let him know either. She's got fire and that's what Liam needs in his life right now. The past will eventually catch up to Ari and threatened the lives of the people that she formed an ever lasting bond with.

" My Tiger"

There is no slow easing into this story, it grabbed me at hurricane speed right from the first page until the very last one read. This story blew me away, even when I thought I had it figured it out I was always wrong. Gripping and unexpected, this story literally took my breath away and kept me on the edge of my seat.

When Liam was first introduced in The Road That Leads to Us, I had a gut feeling that his story was going to be intense and raw. What I wasn't expecting was how much it would move me and leave me in awe. Ari and Liam together were like fire work. Slightly darker than what Micalea usually writes but I think it couldn't be done any differently because these characters demanded it.

Be prepared to be taken on a journey that you will not be prepared for. This story is intense with raw emotions, dangerous, breathtaking and heartbreaking. At the same time is so full of hope, promises, overwhelming love and a whole lot of kindness. With captivating written words that penetrated my heart, soul, body and mind that I had no choice but to get attached to these amazingly crafted characters. I couldn't help but feel connected. Usually I either love the hero or the heroine a little bit more than the other, but they are the perfect loveable characters who showed strength, courage and selflessness.

Bottom line is I feel there is no amount of praise that will do a book of this caliber enough justice. Seamless plot, awesome storyline, and phenomenally framed characters that are vulnerable and strong at the same time. To me it was just perfect.

This story can be read as a standalone. The author wrote it in a way that the readers could catch up easily without missing any key points. Although it is the second book in the Us series. Liam is introduced in the first book, but don't stop yourself from reading this one first because you should be okay to ease yourself into it. For those who have read the Willow Creek series, some characters will come back and play a minor role in this story. It's told in a dual POV with an HEA. This story is somewhat darker than what Micalea writes but it had to be this way. There are no trigger warnings though. I strongly recommend reading this story. All this authors previous books are worth your precious time and money.

I opened my email and was very surprised when I saw an email from one of my favourite authors! I squealed when I opened it and inside was an ARC of this book! I was so excited that I made it my next read! I had been waiting for this book for a few months after I first heard about it! The synopsis sounded amazing and the cover is stunning! I loved this book! Like, LOVED it! It may actually be one of my top three favourite books from this author! It only took me like three sittings to read and I completely devoured it! The plot was also amazing! The sexual tension between the two main characters was off the charts and the mystery aspect added a lot to the plot! I loved that there were a few really hot scenes too! There were quite a few twist and turns in the plot too! There was one near the end that I didn't see coming at all! It really surprised me and it could have changed the outcome of the plot a lot! The plot also made me cry at several points! The character were also amazing and totally made this book for me! Ariella 'Ari' was the main female character, and she was on the run from someone! I don't want to ruin it and tell you a lot about that because it would be very spoilery lol! I loved Ari! She was spunky and stood up for herself! She was also always looking over her shoulder and she was careful about who she was with as well, which was understandable considering her circumstances! She also stood up to her love interest, Liam, and she was as honest as she could be with him and she taught him a lot! Ari was also easy for me to connect with and I loved her more and more as this book progressed! Liam was the main male character, and he was a secondary character in the first book in this series! He was very distant and a bit hard to connect with in the first book, so I couldn't wait to read his story and get inside his head! I loved Liam in this book! He was a bit of an ass and he was quite an angry character, but he was also sweet and he went through a lot of realisation in this book! He was also seriously hot! Liam was also hiding a secret, and it did take quite a lot of this book before I found out his secret, but it explained lot about why Liam acted the way he did! I did feel really sorry for Liam because what he went through made it hard for him to trust people! I loved that this book was written from both Ari and Liam's point of views! It expanded the plot and added more to the mystery aspect with Ari! I also loved getting to see the characters feelings for each other develop through both of their eyes too! I also can't wait to read the next book in this series! I'm know that it's going to be about a character that's wasn't in this book a lot, but did make an appearance! I can't wait to read her story! I'm really excited to read it and I'm definitely going to be reading it as soon as it releases! The cover for this book is absolutely stunning! I loved it as soon as I saw it and the models on the front are the perfect Ari and Liam! It suits the cover for the first book perfectly too! Big thank you to Micalea for an ARC of The Lies That Define Us!

Unfortunately, I haven't had the best of luck with books lately. The last three novels I have read haven't turned out well for me, therefore causing me to give them a low rating. And that hardly EVER happens to me. I actually feel really awful when I rate a book three stars or below because I know how much time and effort goes into writing and publishing a book. I don't want to hurt the author's feelings by any means, but I have to be honest - whether or not it's positive or negative.

I usually really enjoy reading Micalea Smeltzer's books, but unfortunately I did not like "The Lies That Define Us." The author's writing style was great, but the storyline and characters were a huge let down. I did not care for the suspense aspect of the story whatsoever, and I found it hard to connect with Liam and Ariella. I didn't like their relationship all that much, and how Liam's personality was all over the place. He could be super nice one minute and then frigid the next. I wished there had been more romance as well, especially since it was a New Adult novel. I did enjoy seeing some familiar faces from previous books, albeit for a short time, and many of the secondary characters were a nice addition as well. However, I highly disliked what happened towards the end of the story. I hate to feel this way about the book, but it wasn't at all what I thought or hoped it would be, and I was extremely disappointed with it overall.

Even though I disliked "The Lies That Define Us," I haven't given up on Micalea Smeltzer's books in the least. This was the first one of many that I have read from her that I didn't care for. I'll probably give the next book in the Us series, "The Game That Breaks Us," a try, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

WOW Micalea Smeltzer... That was freaking amazing. When you completely become engrossed in a series, like Willow Creek and the Trace and Olivia series... Reading about their children is a must. You get a glimpse of the hardness of Liam in TRTLTU, and you remember him being born in the Willow Creek series, but nothing means much until you read about his present and past that made him who he is/was now. It's hard to grasp his loneliness and not truly knowing why he is the way he is. Then comes Ari, who eventually opens his eyes, knowing they are hiding behind truths and lies, but they are able to be what each other needs. Their friendship is unconventional in many ways, but that doesn't stop them truly opening up to possibilities.

Liam slowly opens up, and Ari needs him more than she realizes...they change each other in so many ways. They are 2 truly beautifully troubled people that lean on one another for solace. These are two characters that need one another more than they know.

This is not your normal Micalea book. It has more depth, some suspense (because you truly don't know all of the lies from the beginning), and the mending and creation of old and new friendships. All of her books are unforgettable, but this one is just different than any book I have ever read. It gives you a spell bounding reason to keep on reading, and I can absolutely promise you that you will not be disappointed. This book is well worth the wait. I received an ARC for an honest review. It is so much more than 5 Stars, which I don't give out freely... I give them to those books that earn them. Bravo!!!

I've read the first two books of the Willow Creek series. This book is like a spin-off to the second book because it involves Liam as a main character which is Mathias and Remy's son. I went into the story not knowing this somehow and if I knew I forgot. I wish I would have read TRTLTU first though but it's not absolutely necessary to read first because this story can be read as a standalone.

These books just get better and better. I must say though, that this book was so very different than her others. It's definitely a page turner as I finished this book in a day. I loved The Lies That Define Us so much.

The push and pull between Ari and Liam is a love story worth reading filled with angst, heartache, pain, and hope. I felt these emotions as the characters felt them. Micalea's books will do that to you, they make you feel. One day I will say that I have read everything that she has written and it still will not be enough.

I went into this book wanting to know about Liam, he intrigued me. With his dad being who he is and being a favourite out of the original series, I was so intrigued as to where Liam's story could take us.

It took us on a journey I didn't expect.

It was so well written, I loved where this story went, with some twists in there I didn't expect and of course the added favourite of Ollie.

I am enjoying what is happening with This series and look forward to reading more

Liam was quite the character, “are you sure?” I drawled, tapping a finger to my lips. “All we’d be doing is sleeping. It’s not like I’d touch you or whisper sweet-nothings in your ear. Sleeping, that’s all we’d be doing.”With a smirk, I added, “Unless you’re afraid you’ll want to touch me. I’m pretty irresistible, so I wouldn’t blame you.” I really loved Liam he knew what was important, "eff the competition.” He slashed his hands through the air. “You’re more important.” This book was more emotional than I was anticipating but I loved it.

Such a bummer that I couldn't rate it above 3.5! Liam wasn't as likeable as Dane sadly. And I felt like the plot was too predictable ar certain times.

Ari has been through a lot. She basically had her life taken from her and, after escaping a past full of horrors, she's trying to breath again. However, her fears don't allow her go give 100%.
Liam is closed off to the world; he doesn't let anyone in and is satisfied portraying an imagine of a moody, brooding, angry at the world guy. That is until he meets Ari and she starts tearing down all the walls he built around himself.
They are both afraid to expose too much of themselves and, in that common ground they find love.
The story felt real and super emotional at times.
We don't learn the whole story about Ari's past until the very end, and although this is a work of fiction, it felt a bit too fantastical and shallow.
I also didn't like the end. It felt like there was more to be told about those 2.
But overall I did enjoy reading this book. It gave me goosebumps from time to time and, to me, that means a lot!

The story was good. I was just a little bit confused of some things on this book. There are some hint of her being abused but then when the truth was being revealed, everything becomes more confusing and doesn’t fit some of what was stated in the few chapters. And the thing that I dont like, is it ended in a rush. Without any explanation at all of what is exactly happened and what the main heroine had gone through. It really have the worst ending if u ask me.

Terrible

I'm sad to that this was just so disappointing. It was repetitive and there was no real connection between the characters.

I skimmed most it without actually missing anything.

I enjoyed the very first books in the series but now it's just boring without any real depth.

Was not worth the money. Sorry!

This was an incredible read. I accidentally read it in one night. It was just the right amount of suspense (for me). I really liked how different characters from multiple series were present in this book. I am late to the fanfare, as I am working my first time through each and every one of Smeltzer's books. All her book are phenomenal!

I liked the story until the lose ends at the end of the book.

I enjoyed the book until the very end. I feel like the closure was pretty weak. Like to the point, that when I went to bed last night my brain tried to rewrite it in my dreams. I feel like even an added epilogue could have at least given better closure.

Wow

Another great addition to the Willow Creek next generation. Loam and Ari's story was a ruff roller coaster ride for both them but Micalea Smeltzer doesn't disappoint she has you feeling it right along with them. Fully recommend.

Wow

I just can’t say enough about this book. It was absolutely amazing. The strength that Ari showed And the things she endured we’re truly horrific. Liam and his friends had a amazing relationship… This is a must read. I can’t wait for more

My new favorite author

Not sure what rock I’ve been hiding under but I adore every book I’ve read so far by this author. Wish more of them was on kindle unlimited! This book is so good and I love how strong Ari is. Excellent read!

I really liked this book. It felt a little darker than the others I've read by this author. It did get a tad crazy at the end, but it was fun. I loved the characters and the connection to previous books and series.
