I had not read any of the Sally Baxter series previously so I will have to look out for them. An English young woman has had a tough time of being a reporter in the previous tales, solved the odd crime. Now she gets the chance to escort a prizewinning young actress to America and report on her screen test and filming.

We see the pair board the sumptuous liner the Queen Mary. No flights in those days. When in America they do take a cross country flight after a stop in New York. I have just been reading about the early days of film making, when the image literally had to be burnt onto the thick celluloid film, so the film makers headed for California as they knew the sun would be best there. In this book I see the result. Hollywood and a move to New Mexico for a Western location (with a cast of 150 Native Americans).

Of course there is a mystery - a young German actress has won the same kind of contest and her safety is threatened, quite severely. Sally and the English actress take her side. The story is great fun, a little non-PC by today's standards but trying to be fair to all.
