About the author

Joanna Nadin is an English author of juvenile fiction best known for the Rachel Riley series of teenage novels Based on Nadin's own childhood, the series follows the comedic narration of a 13-year-old girl.

Nadin has also written several books of juvenile fiction. These include two books for the Oxford University Press "Project X" series designed to encourage boys to read.

Nadin previously worked as a policy writer for the Labour Party (UK).In 2001, she became a special adviser to Tony Blair.

As a child I buried myself in books both at home in Essex and at my grandparents’ houses in Cornwall, where I spent a large part of my time, and where many of my stories are now set. Books and later films were an escape not just from where I was but who I was, which, as I saw it, was pretty much a geek. They gave me the freedom to become someone else, from George in the Famous Five to Velvet Brown winning the Grand National to Baby dancing the Chachacha with Johnny Castle.

I liked this book, but I felt that since it was the last book in the series, there should have been more. Like did Rachel and Jack get back together? Did sad Ed and Scarlet finally kiss? It left a lot to be desired.

I started reading the series as a teen & I tend to be stubborn and try to finish every book if I start reading a series (back then I refused to DNF anything, because it felt wrong).

I tried to finish this like five times for many years. I gave up after the final attempt because I realized that I'm no more interested about learning about the world of Rachel Riley. I don't even remember much of the series it self so it was time to move on.

As much as I’m enjoying the reread of books I loved when I was a lot younger, this one has aged worse than the others in the series. Still pretty smart though.

For the last couple of years, I’ve occasionally revisited a project of trying to finish off all the series I’ve started. I wasn’t particularly eager to pick up this one again — from what I’ve heard, they are basically rip-offs of the Adrian Mole books, so I would rather attempt to read those for the first time — but I remembered finding them pretty funny when I was younger, they are very quick reads, and I only had two books left, so I picked this up to finish off the year.

I found that there are still some decent jokes and antics, but certain aspects of the books haven’t aged well — the protagonist calls the special needs students ‘Criminals and R*tards’, her neighbour ‘Fat Kylie’, and mocks her supposed friend for what is a pretty clear case of depression. I don’t usually bring judgement of the authors into my work, but I was surprised to see Nadin taking aim at other authors on social media when her own work is pretty problematic.

On the other hand, the book is still pretty entertaining in terms of plot, characters, and humour, and the more questionable aspects could be forgiven as the book was published back in 2010 (and continues the tropes established in the previous books in the series). In any case, this is a pretty old and little-known series now that hardly anyone will pick up, so I doubt I will exert much influence with this review.

Tuttua sarjan tyyliä, mutta jotenkin ei oikein enää vedä samalla tavalla kuin edeltäjänsä. Viihdyttävä, mukava lukea ja pidän edelleen tästä päiväkirjatyylisyydestä, mutta jotenkin juoni ei oikein jaksa kantaa kuten sarjan aikaisemmissa osissa. Sarjan faneille voin silti suositella, mutta toisaalta itse olisin jo pärjännyt ilman tätä. Saa nähdä jääkö seuraava lukematta, vaikka senkin kirjastosta nappasin mukaan. Ehkä se kuitenkin pitää lukea. Tuttuihin henkilöihin on kuitenkin mukava palata.
