A Stepbrother Romance

He’s cocked and always ready, my stepbrother the thief . . .

He’s a thug and a grifter, always looking for something new to fill the hole inside of him.

Five years ago, Camden disappeared. Nothing was the same after that. My family’s life was completely changed forever.

We all thought he was dead. Until one day he showed back up on our doorstep, grinning his delicious smile.

I hate him for what he did. We were as close as could be, and then he was gone, taking a piece of me with him.

But something changed him. He’s still drop-dead handsome, with a toned body and a cocky swagger that never quits, but there’s a darkness inside of him now.

I know he’s hiding the truth. People don’t just come back from the dead for no reason.

I hate how badly I want him, but I can’t look away when he strips off his shirt and laughs at me for staring. He even throws me over his shoulder and carries me off when I’m not doing exactly what he wants.

He’s the biggest asshole I know. But his past is coming back with a vengeance, and we’re all in the crosshairs. He’s the only thing standing between our family and the darkness that wants to tear us apart.

My second, and final, try at this author. I read "Jerked," and despite the numerous five-star reviews, I found it annoying on multiple fronts, especially the pacing.

Sadly, I'm having the same drowning pacing problem here. I'm interested in the story, but OMG getting tiny bits of info that's actually meaningful out of the sea of useless info is just not worth the effort. I'm not a fan of this author's writing tempo and style.

Here's what I mean...

"His smile could melt diamonds, and his body was ripped and smooth."

Melt diamonds? Mmmmkay~

width="250" height="300" alt="description"/>

Our parents may have been dating, but he was as different from me as possible.

I'm a "but" fan...

description

....this author uses the damn word to extremes and often to adjoin sentences that have shit to do with each other.

"But there hasn't been a single woman that held a candle to Lacey, even the Lacey that I knew, the girl from high school."

What other Lacey would you know, m'fer?

description

Her:

I arrived. I unpacked. I talked to my step mom. I pondered my dad's business sense. I pondered my step brother's assholishness. I smelled vegetables cooking. I checked Facebook. I walked down the stairs...

Yeah, and I...

description

Good Lawd, someone save me from drowning in this itinerary/diary type of reading.

Affirmation, discredit, reaffirmation in some order or sort seems to be a theme in every single fing thought.

"... turned into this totally different man."

"He both was and wasn't the Camden that left four years ago."

"But there was definitely something new and intriguing annoy him.."

description

All ^that^ on the same page; I digress, perhaps?

Lacey tells us the boss is a decent guy. Then she proceeded to tell us he isn't a creep, either. Well, hell, if he's a decent guy I wouldn't expect him to be a creep. Now, ask me if I care that her boss is a decent guy and not a creep? Ah, no! No, IDGAF since it has fuckall to do with anything anyway!!!!!

description

"While I was outraged, there was a part of me that was beyond excited."

"I could feel how wet I was already, which only made me more angry and embarrassed."

"It simultaneously excited and angered the shit out of me.

Every mfing thought has to be A) dissected, B) reaffirmed a thousand ways and/or C) negated or muddied by some conflicting thought.

The Plot

The tid bits of actual plot are interesting- bad boy thug runs off. Family thinks him dead. Bad manboy comes home with Mexican drug cartel following. Everyone must run, run, run for their lives. Fine enough, but that is probably 5% of the 25% I've read. The rest is TMI fluff and inner monologue about hate, love, loss, and yearn.

Final Thought

I DNF'd this one. The main problem for me is the writing style, sentence flow, and plot pacing. I hate fluff! I hate dissecting the same internal monologue shit over and over for the purpose of angst. I hate detailed info that doesn't add value. That's me. I do, however, realize readers with more patience for such may like this book because it may {?!?!?} get to some exciting drug cartel shit eventually. Idk.. But, I'm out:/

It was okay-ish but I didn't like it, and here is why:

The premise is about two childhood friends who become step siblings, as their parents fall in love and marry. While growing up, Camden becomes more distant and finds himself hanging with the bad crowd, starts stealing cars, sells drugs, etc. To avoid prison, he decides to run away to Mexico where he is recruited by a Mexican cartel. After being warned that he is in danger, and that the cartel wants his head, he goes back to his family to protect them.
Sounds like an okay premise right?

Well, I have so many things to complain about and a bunch of spoilers so put your seatbelts on because this will be a bumpy ride!
🢂

Camden had the potential to be interesting at first, but it was just hard to understand him. Everything he said was half-truth, and lies, which didn’t make him likable because of how dishonest he was. After a few chapters, I didn’t really think of him as charming. What he said was a little bit repetitive. I didn’t see what Lacey saw in him…

As for Lacey, she kept saying how much she wanted him but also how much she wanted to punch him. I have no idea where her desires came from, because at no point the author really elaborated on their past together. Apparently, they did some intimate stuff but not all the way. Everything that was said was all very vague, and the flashbacks we get of the two aren’t really pertinent to the plot or their relationship.

“But now he was back, and I hated him more than ever. Worse, I wanted him more than ever.”-Lacey

Both their personalities were lacking. It was the usual telling and not showing, but even the telling was lacking. I don’t really have any big personality traits to highlight for these characters...Which is surprising because I always find some. They were just flat characters, with a bland and underdeveloped relationship, and a chemistry that was nonexistent. And I couldn’t really bring myself to like them or even care. Paired with the uneventful plot, it was very boring to read.

*May contain some spoilers*

♦️BOOK: Standalone. Full length. Kindle loc: 2728

♦️HERO: Camden, 22--Thief and killer. Has spent the last 4 years working for a drug cartel in Mexico...but not exactly as it may seem. Gorgeous, cocky, bad boy, violent and dangerous when he needs to be.

♦️HEROINE: Lacey, 22--home for the summer, just finished college, working in a bookstore. smart, stubborn, good girl, curvy.

♦️PLOT: Camden and Lacey were childhood friends until he started hanging with a bad crowd, they drifted apart and then Camden disappeared altogether after high school. Lacey went on to college and her father married Cam's mother. Four years later, Camden shows up at home out of the blue, bringing trouble with him in the form of a Mexican drug cartel hot on his heels. With his family in danger, they take a road trip to Alaska as the cartel tries to catch up with them.

♦️REVIEW: An enjoyable read with lots of action, suspense, bad guys and shootouts. Would have liked a little more romance and sexy time thrown in with all the action & violence, but I did like that the fact that they were step siblings wasn't a deterrent for their romantic relationship and it wasn't really an issue for them at all. Also, there was no conflict with their parents regarding their relationship either, which was nice.

♦️POV: dual alternating first person

♦️STEAM LEVEL: moderate, 3/5 - a couple hot sexy scenes

♦️ENDING: HEA, Epilogue - 1 year later, No cliffhanger

♦️QUOTE:
“What’s the plan for today?” I asked him.
“Same thing we do every day. Try and take over the world.”
I stared at him for a second. “Was that a ‘Pinky and the Brain’ reference?”
“Sure was.”
“I’m the Brain.”
He laughed and took another sip of coffee. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

♦️OTHER STUFF: second chance romance, step siblings, CIA, drug cartel, graphic violence, murder, attempted rape, not celibate during separation

Thanks to the author for an advanced copy of this book. Stepbrother, anti-hero, misunderstood, all words that could describe Camden. This is a story of friends to family to foes to forgiveness and I thoroughly enjoyed!

I was provided with an ARC of Cocked by the author to read and review.

Picking up a new B.B Hamel is like digging out your favourite comfy sweater, you just know that feel good feeling you're going to get before you even lay your hands on it. From the pulse pounding prologue to the cute as a kitten ending, Cocked was absolutely no exception to this. Straight away we're introduced to future step siblings, Camden and Lacey. After being incredibly close for the years they spend growing up together in Hammond, Indiana, their bond manages to bring together their single parents, Lacey's father and Camden's mother. Where as Lacey is the model student and all round good girl, Camden is easily bored, always looking for his next thrill, no matter how illegal that may be. When his activities finally tip him over the edge of petty to life threatening, he makes the selfless choice to leave in the hope that all of his troubles go with him. But when he's managed to land himself in to even hotter waters, he knows it's time to head home and protect the people that mean the most to him. But after upping and leaving them with no warning two years previous, what sort of welcome can he possibly expect?

Full of likeable characters, I even found it hard to dislike the villains! Reminiscent of her previous book, Rock Hard, my favourite thing about this was its plausibility. Every plot point was not only well thought out and planned, but nothing ever went over the top. And boy does this author know how to write an incredible sex scene. Where as some authors are all for trying to include every position possible (inventing a few along the way), B.B Hamel can keep it incredibly more realistic. And huge bonus points to her for her locations again!

Once upon a time, there was a guy who loved fast cars. He was young and he was reckless and he was stupid with himself and with his friends. He was careless, like a lot of young men are, because he couldn’t think beyond his own selfish wants and needs.

Back to the more important topic, the characters, Lacey and Camden. If I had to be a favourite out of the two it would be a hands down choice of Camden. What I enjoyed most about him was not only his vulnerability but his almost lacking of cockiness. He could easily flirt up a smoking hot storm with Lacey, but when it came down to the serious stuff he was always full on able to see and admit where he'd screwed up along his life. He never denied how human he could be.

Sometimes it felt like I skipped being a young adult entirely and went right to the dark side of life. It felt like a whole world decided to pass right over me, and for some strange reason I missed it.

Lacey was spectacular in her own rights. Comparing her life to Camden's makes her look downright plain and sheltered, but when things took a turn for the worse she had no hesitation in grabbing a gun and getting down to business. I guess it's true what they say about a woman scorned!

“You’re just jealous.”
“Jealous of what?”
“Me. You wish you could be so free. You’re like this tightly wound clock that’s constantly running out of time.” He shifted his weight and faced me.
“Nice metaphor for an idiot.”
“Thanks. But that’s why you’re so into me. You like that I’m free.”
“I’m not sure that’s it."

A couple of the plot points were very slightly reminiscent of two of my all time favourite books so I'm not sure it would of been possible for me to so much as dislike Cocked, but this for me was right up there with them. It had the authors usually impeccable way of keeping the story flowing with just the right balance of jaw dropping action and depth to the storyline. The pages managed to fly in the blink of an eye and this was another book I felt terribly sad to turn the last page on. Hats off once again to B.B Hamel for another sensationally joyous read.

I was his. I was always his.
And that was more than enough for me.

Cocked What an exciting race to the finish line!
There wasn't any sacrificing of the story in this to fit in more coitus. Though the scenes where it occurs is smoking' ... it wasn't the main focus or the main, main focus.

Car thief to CIA informant, Camden is in alot of trouble and he's brought hell to his family's door. Being the self-sacrificing hero that he is, no one is going to die on his watch ... unless he kills them personally. Camden is a well developed male lead and was a joy to read.

Lacey, the forever good girl has been angry with Camden ever since he disappeared. So, when he shows up out of the blue saying everyone is in danger, she's not having it. As far as she's concerned Camden can just disappear again. Lacey's is a strong female lead and is willing to get her hands dirty. I always believe that female characters can do a little more than wait for rescue and Lacey steps in to try to do just that. Both lead characters fit well together and Cocked was suspenseful enough to keep the reader wondering.

When Lacey meets Camden in school they become quick friends and then become more but when Camden starts hanging with the wrong people he pushes her away. When Camden goes missing his family and Lacey fear the worst until he finally comes back. With Lacey dad and Camden's mom getting married now Lacey and Camden are stepbrother and sister now. Camden when he came back brought back trouble and will do anything to keep his family safe and the girl he can't get out of his mind Lacey. I really enjoyed this story and can't wait to read more from B.B

Lacey and Camden were friends and messed around a little before he up and disappeared without a work. Several years later he shows up with the cartel on his tail and now he has to save his family. Their attraction hasn't wavered even if Lacey is pissed at the mess Camden has put them in.

Forbidden romances are always a hit or miss with me. This one however pulled me in right away and was different than I've read before. The characters were step siblings and instead of hiding their relationship due to circumstances, they rebuilt it instead. The background of the story was only briefly explained, as their romance really kicked off when he came back. And the action and adventure these two go through gives the story a little more depth than just the lust between characters. It was definitely a forbidden romance you wouldn't want to miss.

Lacey, the good girl who just happened to fall for the once shy, turned bad boy, Camden, thinks she's in for a dull summer, but little does she know...... Lacey and Camden became friends in grade school, eventually becoming more than friends in high school. They began to drift apart; Lacey staying focused on school and Camden hanging with the wrong crowd. Camden up and leaves town without a word, never forgetting the girl he left behind. Four years later, Lacey returns from college to spend the summer with her parents. Her parents being her father and Camden's mother. Yes, they are now step-siblings. Lacey, all too soon, receives an unexpected visitor. With Camden's return, Lacey has a hard time believing a word Camden says. Camden has a hard time keeping his hands off Lacey. This older Camden is hotter and sexier and more confident than the one she remembers. Lacey has grown into a gorgeous, self assured woman. They soon realize Camden is bringing danger with him. Camden, Lacey and their parents leave their home on a mission to stay safe. Will Camden's reason for disappearing in the first place and his continued lies pull them farther apart? Will Lacey be able to forgive him for the deceit and the destruction he has brought upon his return? THIS STORY KEPT ME INTRIGUED! NON STOP ACTION AND ADVENTURE ! HOT, STEAMY SEX SCENES ! ! CAMDEN IS AN EXCELLENT STORYTELLER.....HE CAN TELL ME A STORY ANYTIME ! !

This is the first book I have read of B. B. Hamel. I was skeptical at first about reading it because of the thin line between right and wrong with two step siblings falling in love with each other. I have to say that in spite of everything it was well worth the time to read it.

Lacy and Camden have know each other since the 8th grade. They had some classes together and they hung out together after school. It wasn't until Camden's 9th grade year when he starting growing into more of a man than a kid, that Lacy's interest in him started changing. Camden also started changing. He was hanging with the wrong crowd and had started doing drugs and stealing cars.

It was their junior year that their parents met and started dating. Then two years later after Camden just up and disappears and is thought dead, their parents finally get married. Lacy really hated her step brother for leaving them, but she still loved him. Fours years later after they have grieved and started getting on with their lives, Camden appears from nowhere. He isn't dead after all and he is telling tales of why he disappeared and didn't contact them, but Lacy isn't buying his lies.

BB Hamel keeps the suspense going through the whole book. You never know for sure who you can trust, nor do you know if one of the characters is going to live or die. Plus I liked the fact that she kept dropping hints in Camden's dialogue that there was more to his disappearance than he was telling.

This book is a must read and I promise you will not be disappointed in at all.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Lacey has accepted her once crush and now stepbrother has disappeared from her life forever. She's mourned him and assumed his death, that is until he turns up on her parents doorstep, alive and well. There's anger but there's also that underlying attraction she's always felt.

Camden has done some pretty bad things in his past. But leaving Lacey turns out to be the worst thing by far. He hasn't been able to stop thinking about her and now he's bought trouble right to her doorstep. He has to save her and their parents.

A different feel to this step brother romance. Whilst the aspect is there it's not as strong because their parents met through their friendship and eventual relationship. That seems to come first over their step relationship. There's a lot of action as you'd expect from a book of this type. The fear, anger and betrayal felt in the story is strong and, while you want to feel sympathetic towards Lacey; reading from Cams point of view and finding out the facts first makes you soften a bit towards him. A sexy hot couple when they eventually give in and accept there's so much more besides the anger of his leaving.

Camden had been Lacey’s best friend back when they were kids. As Camden had got older he started hanging around the wrong crowd. Then one day he just disappeared. Lacy and their parents did not know if he was dead or alive. Lacy was not even sure if Camden knew their parent got married.

Camden was back in town. He has been thru a lot and has a lot of secrets that he can not tell. The one thing he knows is he has to protect his family. Camden has the Mexican Cartel after him and he knows they will come after his family to get to him. His friend Trip is helping him get his family to safety.

There is a strain on Lacey and Camden relationship. Seems like danger is around corner. Seems like the people that forced Camden to get involved with the Cartel have abandon him. Camden is face with having to sacrifice his life to save Lacey and his family. Can Lacey handle to thought of living with out him?

I received this for an honest review. B.B. Hamel has done and amazing job once again. She gives you the hot steamy sexy we crave, betrayal, danger, and adventure.

Camden a thug has left town and presumed dead. Lacey his once best friend and now step -sister not sure how to deal with her feelings of his wayward ways and the way he treated her and his mom. Lacy is on summer vacation from college and decides to visit her dad for the summer but, her summer of relaxation soon turns to a nightmare. Camden shows up on Lacey's doorstep alive and well. He is hiding a grave secret from her and his mom. He is wanted by the Mexican cartel and his family is in danger. They must all go on the run in order to say their lives.
I loved how well this story was written the plot was extremely exciting and each page was full on excitement and mystery. The developing relationship between Cam and Lace was also another thing I enjoyed the love hate thing they had going was cute . I must say I did enjoy that Lacey decided to stand up and help fight for what she wanted and that she becomes such a strong young woman through the whole ordeal. Another hit for me

Well I guess I was in the minority for not loving this book. Personally, the book was a lot grittier than the synopsis written, and the step siblings thing, was actually a minority issue in this book. Where I expected an asshat coming back in and turning their world upside down, what I didn't expect was the whole drug dealing sidearm storyline - that is actually the main part of the story.

I think that is actually what ruined my enjoyment of this book. Because it wasn't what I was expecting. If I'd have gone into it, expecting something raw and gritty, I would have picked it up when I was in one of those moods.

I also didn't feel like I got enough of an peek into his mind. We find out what he was up to that spiralled out of control. But apart from a light snippet of I wanted to get my rocks off, couldn't see what was in front of me, we never get a deep understanding of who he is. And she seemed to undergo a personality transplant part way through which screamed odd to me.

This is an honest review in exchange of an ARC.
This is my third book by BB Hamel, and every one of them were awesome! This is not just a stepbrother romance, is a suspense romance book, there is a lot of fight, bullets, and guns, and steamy hot sex too.
Camden is a messed up young men, he's trying really hard to do the right thing, he is very sorry to put his family in danger but he would do anything to protect them even if that means he need to sacrifice himself.
This book will have you reading from page one to the last in one sitting, is really good, and I loved that Lace was strong and brave and never whining. You really need to read it and you will find a great story.

I received this for my honest review, this is the first book I have read by B B Hamel and certainly won't be my last. This story was steady paced and with the two main characters giving you their points of view it really does take you into their world. You get the action and slow build of romance but the strong chemistry and loyalty between them really stands out and the depth of which it is written really gives you understanding of their feelings and what has happened to each of them. This is a great step sibling romance with an edge that won't disappoint, I highly recommend this read.

Cheesy as heck

But I ate it right up. The car ride was a bit repetitive, and I didn't think I would grow to like our heroine, but I did. There isn't a whole lot of smut, but the smut that's here is HOT. I loved Camden. Hamel did another great job with this book! It didn't feel like a "forbidden stepsibling romance," but more a second chance story, so you might be disappointed if you are looking for the atypical stepbrother taboo prose. This book was over the top, and crazy, but if you're like me, and indulge in a little cheese, you'll love it

Read this as a bonus book featured in the Kindle edition of "Long". "Cocked" is the fourth book I've read by this author and by far my favorite. I can say I genuinely enjoyed reading this one and that it didn't have my usual complaints about B.B. Hammel books. The story was good. The characters were good. The sex talk was good. Nothing was repetitive. Bravo.
