Well, ummm, uh, that is to say,
Oh, my. This book took my breath away. Literally. And not in the good way. I thought it would be funny in the same way you may laugh at a dog chasing it's tail. But this was just disturbing. I didn't like the artwork at all. It was creepy and the dialog didn't help. The heads of the characters looked a little too big for their bodies too. The preview showed a scene of Zoey and Aphrodite arguing about, what else? A boy. "He was mine first." "No, you broke up with him." "Well, he's mine and you're a hag from hell!" Rinse, lather, repeat.

Some of the artwork (the cutaways in between scenes) was beautiful, the rest was pretty basic and nothing to write home about.
The story...eh. It's HoN. That should say it all. Either you love the books, hate the books, or are like me and happen to still be reading them because you have issues and refuse to quit after being so far into the series, even though you pick up each new book with a grumble of frustration.
I only read the graphic because it was free. Unfortunately, I skimmed a good portion of it because I was stuck having to view the thing on my computer since it wouldn't transfer to my reader. This was not the 6 page preview. It was the full length version. You'd probably skim too if you were me.
I'd recommend only to major diehard fans of the series who can't get enough. Otherwise, I'd say to give it a pass.

This was my first introduction to P.C. Cast and I wasn't all that impressed. I realize that this is a graphic novel adaption of her books and that could have contributed to my bored state while reading this. I would be willing to read the actual first novel in her House of Night series to get a better feel for her as an author because I feel like this graphic novel had good plot potential.
I liked the flashbacks in the story, and that was about all I liked. The rest of the story didn't seem to have much meat on it. There was some immature squabbling between teenage girls, 'lessons' to be learned by the main character and a shit ton of cliches. Words cannot express how much I hated Zoey's gay friend.
The art seemed really lazy and there were a couple of times where I was confused because a lot of the females seemed to look a lot like the main character.
The maturity level seemed to be all over the place on this one. A couple of times I scratched my head wondering if some of the content was too adult for the YA genre. An example was the rape of the two sisters in one of the flashbacks. That was some serious shit.
Anyways, like I said, I would be willing to try out P.C. Cast's actual novels based on the plot of this one but I would be going into it with very low expectations.

This was weird. Really weird. There was a rape scene,Cleopatra and Mark Anthony sex scene in a tub,stabbing,Nyx saying she can't parallel park(WTF did she say that anyway?!) and some good old fashion chick fight. What a mess.

As you can tell by the look of the blog, I’m a creature ruled by visuals! So it comes to no surprise that I enjoy a good graphic novel here and there – especially if it’s paranormal in nature.
Such is the case with House of Night: Legacy – a graphic novel inspired by the YA book series. Here are the first three titles.
The premise really hooked me in and the amazing graphic art did not disappoint. House of Night: Legacy tells the story of Zoe Redbird, a 16 year old chosen by the goddess Nyx to lead the Dark Daughters – a group of vampires. Deposing the former leader, Aphrodite, Zoe must learn five lessons before she can take command. With the help of her faithful friends, she undertakes the task of mastering the elements of Fire, Earth, Air, Water, and Spirit.
House of Night: Legacy is not only action packed, it features several stories with historical figures, but with a vampire twist. It is the perfect blend of action, tragedy, and comedy, and now I can’t wait to dive into the books that inspired this graphic novel.
I definitely recommend House of Night: Legacy to readers of the book series, as it gives them an invaluable visual into the amazing and imaginative world P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast have created. For those who are new to the series, (like me) it provides that ‘hook’ which will make them run to the books and read more about this series. I can’t wait to start!

To ensure their survival, the vampires in transition, known as fledglings, congregate in Houses of Night – boarding schools set up for them to learn how to master their new powers.

Apparently I won this in a giveaway, because it randomly showed up in my mailbox one day. So of course I read it! It’s a bonus story about Zoey when she first gets Marked and moves into the House of Night, and this story told a bit about her and a background story about one of their ancient vampyres, Freya. It was cute and short. The art style was a bit strange, making everyone seem smug and stuck-up, even Nyx, which bothered me. But the coloring was lovely. I do think that anyone who hasn’t read the books (at least the first one) would have a hard time understanding what’s going on in this, though.

Cast, House of Night, issue #1 of this graphic novel series follows the life of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year-old vampyre fledgling, as she finds strength and determination to become the leader of the Dark Daughters. Zoey is apprehensive about her new assignment because it means she will have to be a leader, a position she never wanted and believes she doesn’t deserve. In order to understand why the Goddess Nyx marked her and to see if she truly has what it takes to lead the Daughters, Nyx gives Zoe five tasks to complete. Moreover, if she successfully learns her five lessons, she will be deemed ready to lead the Dark Daughters.
In each of the five stories, we’re given a glimpse into the House of Night history by following the lives of famous vampyres who were each associated with one of the five elements. The purpose of each is to essentially teach Zoey some important life lesson about humility, sympathy, asking for help, among others. There is never a dull moment in this graphic novel, and I must say I thoroughly the enjoyed story.
Never having read the House of Night Series, I didn’t know what to expect with this graphic novel. Nevertheless, I am pleasantly surprised at how interesting and rich issue #1 was, giving depth to a story for those of us who might not have found out about this series otherwise. The author goes into tremendous detail as each vampyre’s life is retold over several pages. You can also see growth and character development with our main character Zoey, which is sometimes hard to accomplish in this type of setting (i.e. a novel vs. a graphic novel/comic). I also enjoyed the entire cast of side characters who each had different personalities and I can see them appealing to a wide variety of teenagers.
Overall, House of Night: Legacy is another surprise hit for me. I think it is perfect for anyone who is a fan of all things paranormal and not just for those people who have read the books. The art work also flows cohesively with the story. With each element, you can see the colors transition to fit the overall tone of that section of narrative. It’s a fun read with a wealth of detail and I highly recommend it!

For somebody that has just recently gotten into picking up graphic novels, I have to say that I have become very particular about the ones I read.
I recently read the Wicked Lovely graphic novel and wanted more color and vibrancy to the look and pages of it, but it's a good and fun read. I also recently read the Vampire Academy Graphic Novel and felt there was not enough dialogue to go with the pictures, a lot of the character and world building was missing and for a short book way to much drama and emotion thrown in. But the artwork was amazing and I loved the full colored glossy pages.
Now onto the reason your here. The House of Night graphic novel. This was a perfect match between artwork, color schemes and story-line. I highly enjoyed this one.
I have come to the reasoning that when I buy a graphic novel, it costs just as much or more as the original novel itself. So I tend to lean more towards the graphic novels that represent the most of the novel as possible, as thoroughly as possible. (if that makes sense).
In House of Night the visual of of the tattoos and the attitudes of the characters comes through on the pages through the artwork. The graphics alone tell the majority of the story just through the facial expressions and the details in the buildings and clothing. It's not just about shading and frowns, the actual coloring of the shadows and the smaller details that I have come to appreciate.
This graphic novel did a perfect job of combining the story of the novel along with the visuals. There was an amazing balance of dialogue and story to go along with the visuals. And again the artwork is very detailed and I loved the color choices, they complimented the mood to the novel.
If you enjoyed the House of Night series, or are interested in the novels you should check this one out. If you have not at least been introduced into the story, this graphic novel may have a bit of spoilers in it. But if you are curious about the series and would like an introduction to it and the Fledgling handbook (aka you don't mind a little spoilers) I highly encourage you to pick it up, it's a great price.

There are some series that actually can benefit from the transition to graphic reinterpretation, while others simply cannot, no matter how good the artwork. I don't think House of Night counts as one of the better adaptations. The story covered in issue 1 takes place between events in the second novel of the House of Night series, Betrayed, so it assumes that the reader has already read the novels, and that's kind of an odd measure since it's a comic series intended to introduce/expand the franchise. If you're entirely new to the House of Night series, you're not really getting a full story here, so jumping into it might not only be confusing, but also a bit sparse on the details of Zoey Redbird's role and introducing the collective cast of characters.
I didn't like the adaptation at all from the story angle. The characters seem bland, there's little to no introduction or context put into any of them, and it probably would've benefited a little more if the comic were longer than it was, as in a full graphic novel rather than just a short. The artwork is decent in spurts, which is probably the only reason I'm giving this more than a star. I loved the cover images and also the insert image of Zoey, but the panels themselves don't really measure up to some of the better graphic/comic art that are in peer series.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend this.

Well...
That says enough doesn't it? As you can see I gave it 1 star, so yes, it kinda sucked. I love the House of Night series. Well, I love some parts of it. Some characters of it and definitely NOT Zoey. Just wanted to state that fact.
I did not enjoy this graphic novel, even though I really love graphic novels in general. I got it from Netgalley so I didn't get to see the art work in "real". But I really disliked the art. Some parts were good but other parts were just awful. Not my thing, no. And the story seemed really confusing to me even though I know the first House of Night book by heart. Yes, it isn't exactly the first story but more like what happened between after the first and second book. The only positive thing I have to say about it that Zoey's little brother, Kevin was in it. I loved that she was protecting him. Maybe that's just me as an older sister talking but Zoey ought to seek more contact with him in the actual series. I admit, she has been busy trying to just stay alive... or just dating so many guys... ugh. Another thing I liked were the stories the nerd herd and Zoey read about. Especially the one with Cleopatra.
So I wouldn't recommend this graphic novel to anyone. I'm glad I never bought this one since it would've been a waste of my money.

I really enjoyed this new addition on the House of Night series and it truly did compliment the books. The stories were fun to read since it gives a new version of the ancient people we know so well. This book can stand alone from the books but I truly suggests the reader to be familiar with the house of night series before they read this because it will add to the effect of seeing the characters visually in a graphic novel.
I commend the dialogue in the novel because they are straight to the point and no unnecessary lines where added. I also love the way the characters were illustrated because they really did click or even improve the way I visualize them in my mind when I was reading the novels.
Lastly, this graphic novel did come out at the right time because along the road the house of night series did have its ups and downs for me and reading this increased my excitement for the next book.
All in all, as a house of night fan this graphic novel is such a treat!

Anyway, Zoey makes a mistake/poor judgement with an element, then has to read through the founding story of the element and learn a lesson going over the mythology which were initially in the The Fledgling Handbook 101. This starts with one of the darker stories, which was an odd choice.

Okay, so, you know how there are those books where you didn't think you'd like at all, but then you end up liking it, but it's not as good as you thought it be.
No?
I don't either.
But I've heard and read the reviews on Marked, the first book of the House of Night book series, and let me be the first to tell you that most of the ones that came from the awesome people I trust weren't good. So I don't know what I was thinking when I was requesting this off NetGalley.
Perhaps something along the lines of, "Oh, I'll probably get denied anyway, so what harm can it do?"
And so I clicked the Request button.
And was accepted.
And then I was like:

Would I enjoy this graphic novel adaptation? Would I hate it so much I'd throw my computer out the window so it could get run down by a car so I'd never have to look at this again?
I had to know. I had to.
So after months of debating and hair pulling and reading other review books, I broke down and read both this and the graphic novel adaption of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Both are really great editions for fans of each respective series, I assure you that. But notice what I said: fans of each series. Not that I hate the books personally, since I haven't read them yet. But I feel that if either series's novel version didn't appeal to you, I doubt the picture version will. Because it's the same story in a different form.
I liked this graphic novel well enough...or...I liked it well enough when it wasn't trying to make my eyes bleed. Little advice from one reader to another: When you request graphic novels off NetGalley, they usually come in very blurry font writing. It makes my eyes hurt everytime.
The artwork could use improvement. It's not bad - just not good. Characters' head shouldn't look too big for their bodies. Nor should they be so annoying. (Which is not the artwork's fault, but still.)
Oh, Aphrodite.
Please.

Both are really great editions for fans of each respective series, I assure you that. But notice what I said: fans of each series. Not that I hate the books personally, since I haven't read them yet. But I feel that if either series's novel version didn't appeal to you, I doubt the picture version will. Because it's the same story in a different form.
I liked this graphic novel well enough...or...I liked it well enough when it wasn't trying to make my eyes bleed. Little advice from one reader to another: When you request graphic novels off NetGalley, they usually come in very blurry font writing. It makes my eyes hurt everytime.
The artwork could use improvement. It's not bad - just not good. Characters' head shouldn't look too big for their bodies. Nor should they be so annoying. (Which is not the artwork's fault, but still.)
Oh, Aphrodite.

For some reason though, despite the horrible reviews, I expected something out of this. I did get something, that'll I admit, but it didn't reach my expectations. And, to be honest, they weren't all that high.
Perhaps I'll call this a guilty pleasure kind of read?

I’m not the hugest fan of the “House of Night” novels (though I do read each one when it comes out), but I have to admit, both netgalley and Dark Horse had me quite intrigued when I heard that a comic version was coming out. And while this was only a sneak preview, it still told me enough about the comic version and gave me enough to compare it with the original books. While the art was pretty awesome (disregard the cover), there were some things in this preview that quite frankly, I don’t remember happening in the original book for “Marked”. That’s not to say that I didn’t like it, though.
The art – it’s pretty standard, I guess, within the world of American superhero comics (think DC Comics in particular), but I found it a breath of fresh air after seeing what happened to the art in “Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life” (I’m so not even going there with a review because it would be all four-letter words and rage). Anyway, I love how they made all of our favorite heroes (and anti-heroes) into “real” comic-like characters, and the girls aren’t all barbie tits and high-heeled feet. It was nice to look at, that was for sure.
The preview included the smackdown between Zoey and Aphrodite in the mess hall regarding the Dark Daughters and Aphrodite’s warning to Zoey about Nepheret’s true intentions. I thought that was quite well done, and true to the original, along with a flashback of how Zoey’s marks got filled in by Nyx. Well-adapted, up until we cut to Scandinavia in the 13th century. I uh, don’t really remember that part, but I did want to know more about it. Correct me if I’m wrong, of course, but I definitely don’t remember that part being in the first book. I don’t have a problem with it, and I even applaud the adapter Dalian for going somewhere the novel did not. I think that with the inclusion of more material, the House of Night universe will get a bit better and a bit wider, and feel a little less of what’s become now-stereotypical paranormal YA plot elements. And hopefully, the book will connect back into the comic at some point in future books. That would be ideal for me, but again, that’s just me.

I really liked this graphic novel. I’m a huge fan of the House of Night series so naturally I am aware of the storyline, characters and world they are from so I would always like this. It was nice to be able to have an image to go with the people we read about because I find it hard to visualise a person from a book and now when I read them I will have a picture of the way the author intends them to look. The artwork was beautiful, I think you never really get how much work goes into one of these novels but I appreciate it all and graphic novels for me are certainly not just about the story. I loved the full page pictures that divided up the sections most. Story-wise, I was expecting a shortened version of the first book like most graphic novels that have been released of much loved books so I was really glad that this was different and that while we get snippets of what is going on in the actual book, this was like a side story that fits right in giving us new material. We get the story of Zoe as she struggles to find a way to be a good leader of the Dark Daughters and the lessons she learns through the fledgling handbook. We are told the stories of how Nyx gifted various vampires with their elements and showing Z the circumstances for misusing them. It was a nice addition to the HoN books and I would definitely pick up any sequels. My only grumble is that- as I’m writing about an e-galley- I had to view it on my pc and it was hard to read and size to get the best from it so I feel like I couldn’t truly appreciate it because the laptop didn’t really do it justice and whilst I did like the graphics, they are probably tons better in the actual book.

I had mixed feelings about this comic, which is based on a series of novels I haven't read.
At first I hated the teenage stereotyping of the main characters. Do American teenage girls really squabble like this about boys? Are they really this shallow and feckless?
Then I hated the misappropriation of some of the world's great mythic stories - Nyx, Persephone, Freya, et cetera.
But above all I disliked the way this story tames and domesticates the myth of the evil blood sucking vampire. This a more general trend in modern American teenage fiction so I suppose there's nothing we can do about it but it saddens me deeply to see a powerful symbolic creature sapped of its life force in this way.
Then I smoothed my wrinkled brow and thought about it objectively. The story is coherent and works well as a metaphor for the journey into womanhood. Blood and lust are forever co-mingled in the adolescent female psyche. Establishing a finishing school in the heart of suburbia where primeval sexual urges can be understood and assimilated through archetypal mythic images is probably not a bad thing. I see nothing wrong with creating the conditions in which sexualised women are not seen as a threat to society, and this story helps to do that quite well.
The drawings are very good, particularly the ones set in mythical Norway, which are by Karl Kerschl.
So, all in all, it's an intriguing little comic, which I ended up liking more the more I thought about it. I won't be reading the novels, though, hahahahaha!

Real Review: Ok, no I have not read the whole thing. I've read the book and I've looked at the preview and that was enough. At least Twilight's graphic novel has decent art. The art in this is just unappealing and harsh and just plain ugly at times. All the production costs obviously went into the covers which, I have to admit, are gorgeous. When the art isn't make you cringe, it's standard at best. Nothing gorgeous, nothing that would stop me in my tracks, nothing that merits a whole graphic novel of a book series that really didn't need it.
And the story, I shouldn't have to say anything. Visit Marked's Goodread page and read a couple of their reviews. They say it better than anyone could.
I will say it once and only once. Not every flipping ass book needs a graphic novel. Stop producing them just to cash in.

I’ve read the House of Night series for years. I loved it when I first started reading it and slowly grew out of it, but I keep reading because I want to know what happens to these characters. I have yet to read the last book, but it’s on my shelf waiting. When I saw that a graphic novel was coming out, I decided to check it out. I expected it to be a graphic novel adaptation of the first book or something, but this is more like an extra for fans of the series.
I’m not crazy about the art. It’s the faces I don’t like so much. The shading makes their noses look weird sometimes. Sometimes their heads look way to big for their bodies too. I did like the stories though. I love the way the Cast women have retold ancient myths and history with vampyres. I also enjoyed the flashbacks Zoey had to the first book. I was more interested in seeing scenes I knew adapted than a totally new story. This is a collection of five comics. Think of it like five short stories, each dealing with a different element and a different lesson.
If you’re a House of Night fan, you’ll probably enjoy this graphic novel. If not, it will be really confusing. I don’t like the art very much, but that’s just an opinion. You might enjoy it more.

I almost prefer to be introduced to a series through graphic novel. It gives me a quick insight as to whether or not I will like the books. House of Night is one of those series that I was curious about but unable to fit into my reading schedule. This graphic novel was a great introduction.
Designed to accompany the books, this story gives a quick introduction to the characters for those who are unfamiliar with them and a deeper exploration into the mythology that runs through the series for those already reading the books.
The story line wasn’t great but it was interesting enough. Zoey Redbird has been made the leader of the Dark Daughters but she doesn’t feel fit to rule. Through five lessons and historical stories, she learns how to be a leader.
I, actually, liked Zoey. I found her to be quite real and interesting. She had so many layers to her personality and wasn’t perfect like so many characters in vampire books come out. I loved the mythology and the changing of the stories to fit into vampire lore.
The art was quite cartoony which worked well for this story. The colors were vibrant and engaging. It would appeal to younger audiences as well as more mature ones.

I enjoyed this little graphic novel. Though it drives me nuts when I get graphic novels on my Nook the words are always blurring and when I am done reading it I feel like I need some glasses.
I thought this graphic novel's story was neat. I like how the plot kept going back to the past with each element and show us what happened then. I will say I stopped being a fan of the House of Night series about book 6 or 7. This graphic novel had the same style... the way the girls talk to each other, lots of sex, and just well how teenagers act. I don't care for that part of this series. But I like the art... the back stories, and being able to see the characters I had always pictured in my head!!
If you read these books then definitely pick up the graphic novels. And if you enjoy a neat vampire story pick it up too!! Thanks to Net Galley for sending me this ARC!!

I got the preview of this graphic novel from Net Galley which was so cool. I haven't really read Marked yet but I will start to because of the graphic novel. I loved the drawing and how the encounter with Aphrodite and Zoey has been depicted. I would look forward to this in my graphic novel collection and would be reading Marked soon. :)

IT WAS JUST 27 PAGES AND I'M HOOKED
Ok so now I love it I read it in like 10 mins and probably most people would've wanted volumes to be longer but I honestly don't really have time for reading much and this is very interesting and it's so short i can read it in 10 minutes as I said and because of that it helps me a lot with my reading goals and I'm probably gonna binge the others now idek how many volumes are there but I'm down for it👀👀

Unsurprisingly, a YA lukewarmly new-age-feminist vampire (sorry, vampYre) romance does not have all that much to offer. It is completely rote and predictable, but back when I had seen the covers I was drawn in. Well, rookie mistake, the art inside is barely serviceable, except for the past event sequences, some of which truly merit attention (like the one with Odysseus).
It's not horrible, but it is definitely trite. I guess fans of the series would like it.

I was happy to see the characters of one of my favorite book series being made into a graphic novel, but I thought it was going to be based on the series, not mini-scenarios, and reflected on past vampryes. I was sadly disappointed by this fact. I would recommend if you want extra content and want to see how the characters look, but for an adaptation do not read.
