Annie Nicholas hibernates in the rural, green mountains of Vermont where she dreams of different worlds, heroes, and heroines. When spring arrives the stories pour from her, in hopes to share them with the masses one day.
Mother, daughter, wife are some of the hats she happily wears while trudging after her cubs through the hills and dales. The four seasons an inspiration and muse.
Ian's alpha, Roy, tosses him into the trunk of Roy's car and drives him deep into the Adirondack mountains. Roy leaves Ian at a boot camp run by a vampire, Pallas. This camp is filled with "misfits, omegas, geeks and nerds." Pallas plans to shape them into an elite shifter fighting team. In other words, creating a vanguard elite.
Clare volunteered to come to this boot camp. She's fighting to prove her status as alpha. She's beginning to know all the werewolves by name. When Ian is accepted in to camp, all of Clare's senses go off. She can't afford a relationship with Ian right now. Not and achieve her independence. Ian realizes Clare is his mate. Will Clare reach her goal, or will Ian win her heart? Can they shape this group of "misfits, omegas, geeks and nerds" into a new wolf pack?
This is a fast, easy novel. We learn the bare minimum about the characters. There were times during the reading when I didn't care about the main characters, but I did want to see what devious situation Pallas cooked up for the werewolves. This subplot devise kept my attention focused. There is a cliffhanger. The last chapter ends abruptly with a lot of unanswered questions. This is the type of book read between heavier novels. The story contains steamy love scenes and adult language.

REVIEW New to me author.
This book had me laughing one minute then holding my seat the next. We get a bunch of shifters whose Alphas pretty much don't want them and sends them to a place ran by a Vamp who is to train them if they are trainable? Ian is not a trueborn shifter but he is Alpha unknowingly. He meets Clare at the training house and things between them spark. But they are not safe in training or otherwise. We get action, suspense, and very hot romance.
This was a very good book. I cannot wait to read the next in the series.
I was gifted this book for proofreading although I do own the kindle copy.
*please note I read an updated copy of this book* Annie Nicholas
I really enjoyed this story! A group of oddball werewolves is shunted into a new program to develop top-flight fighters and this is the story of how they come together to form a pack (trained by a vampire!). The plot is carried out well, the characters are well described, and the attention to detail is great. If you enjoy shifter stories at all, I think you will enjoy this one, and if you liked movies like "Darby's Rangers" and other war training films, this story reminds me very much of them, with the development of comraderie in the group training to become a fighting elite group. There is some violence (not by the werewolves or the vampire!) and some sex, but not much. I think it's an excellent story and I am looking forward to reading more of the Vanguard Elite stories by Ms. Nicholas, because this was certainly a fine introduction to the series. Thank you, Ms. Nicholas!
Having just read the ARC for book 2 of this series "Vanguard Elite", I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this book on Amazon for free, I automatically brought it & quickly devoured it. Although I read book 2 prior to reading this book, I was still able to understand what was going on, maybe even more than if I'd read it in order.
Clare volunteered to join the bootcamp, the only sibling to have the alpha gene, but a daughter, this is her chance to proove that girls can do just as well as the boys. Her alpha gene has Clare keeping everything in check as the other wolves arrive. Ian's alpha tosses him out of the car, cuffed & un aware of what was going on. His only choice is to escape, go it alone, but after a run in with some trespassers, Ian is left wondering.
Oh my goodness, the human town not to far away definitely cause some trouble, I loved the interractions between Ian & Clare, as well as the wolves within their small circle. Pallus is scary, but he makes everything weave into the story so much easier, also his slight background reveal... WOW. I can't wait to read what happens next in the series.
The propaganda going around is that the Vanguards think that modern shifters have lost their way. That honor and justice had all but but vanished. Pallas, one of the few nosferatu clan vampires, is tasked with creating an elite shifter team. Some volunteered, some were dropped off by their packs, but they are all their at Pallas' mercy and he has none. He is bound and determined that he will train them to become the elite of the elite. To Clare, there is nothing more she wants, she volunteered to be here to be the alpha that her father never let her be. Ian on the other hand is dropped off by his pack leader as he seems to be a troublemaker if the first water. Can Clare and Ian put aside their differences to lead their newly formed pack together? What happens when the local hunters start hunting the wolf shifters? Enjoy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story is unique, creative, and entertaining. I found myself laughing one minute, on the edge of my seat in anticipation the next. The characters are diverse, and likable. They vary in personalities making these characters more relatable and believable. I look forward to reading more in this series.
A bit different than the normal shifter romance books. It’s a slightly offbeat look at misfits within the shifter world being trained by a vampire to become fighters. From geeks, to legally blind shifters, to diminutive, etc, it’s a good start to see how bootcamp can whip them into shape while they deal with their own insecurities, prejudices around them, and find love.
Take a fun stroll into Pallas’ woods where he runs a training camp for the out of place and sometimes weak wolf. The Vanguard Elite Series is a fun, fast read. A bit of mystery surrounds every shifter - and their leader - and who better to train these wolves than a very unusual vampire!
Bootcamp of Misfit Wolves is the first book in Annie Nicholas' Vanguard Elite series. A vampire, Pallas, is running a boot camp for werewolves for the Vanguard. The graduates of the boot camp will become part of the Vanguard Elite. The Vanguard believes shifters have lost their way and see the boot camp as one way to fix this.
The packs don't trust each other or the camp so send to Pallas their weakest members - hence the use of 'misfits' in the title. Clare volunteers because she sees this camp as the only way to become the alpha she knows she is. Ian's alpha doesn't even bother telling him he's going; instead he's brought to the camp tied up and in a trunk. Ian isn't weak - he's just a troublemaker.
There is an instant attraction between Clare and Ian, but they both resist until they can't. When danger comes, they need to pull together - or surviving this boot camp will be the least of their worries.
I really liked the premise of this novella, which serves as an introduction to Ms. Nicholas' spin off series. It even sounds like it will be a good series. However, this particular book feels very rushed. Not only is there the introduction to each of the characters, but there is also setting up potential conflicts, and the romance between Clare and Ian. I really wish Ms. Nicholas had drawn out the development of their relationship rather than cram it into this novella. It feels forced and I'm still not certain why either Clare or Ian fell for the other - outside of wolf instincts.
In the end, I found the concept to be more exciting than the execution.
This was a short but sweet read. I enjoyed the start of the series but it felt a bit rushed and led to many questions that I wish had been answered.
I do like the idea of a Vampire training wolves and the misfits actually starting to get to know each other. I may continue this, and I a will look to see if this is a spinoff as the start seemed to leave things as if you already knew the information.
Bootcamp of Misfit Wolves (Vanguard Elite #1) by Annie Nicholas is Paranormal Adult Romance. There are some editing errors in this book. Not many, but enough that I noticed them. It is a really fun read. I enjoyed the story line and all the characters. Two of my favorites are Pallas and Blain. The main characters are Clare and Ian. Clare is a born female wolf shifter. A female alpha about 20 to 22 years old. She has volunteered to be a part of the experiment for the Vanguard Elite. She is actually a bit too overconfident in her abilities. Ian is 22 and a turned wolf shifter, looking for a place to belong. He is a dominant, but he has a lot of self-doubt. He has been with his pack for a year when he suddenly finds himself literally thrown into the experiment by his alpha. The whole story, even with the editing errors, flowed smoothly and quickly. The chemistry between Clare and Ian is instant. The interplay between them was often amusing and sometimes steamy. Their experiences at the boot-camp evolves them into the leaders they were both meant to be. Entertaining, amusing and a great start to the 'Vanguard Elite' series. A definite keeper!
Another great start to another great series! This book was AWESOME!!! I loved everything about it. Being very familiar with Annie's books, I was VERY happy to see her use of the Nosferatu vampire in this series. I enjoyed both Clare and Ian, and I liked reading their transformation from uncertain to dominant, from lost to found. My favorite part might have been more towards the end when vampire Pallas meets human Sheriff Lee (can't wait to read more about their story!!!) The ONLY reason I gave this book 4 stars was due to the proofreading issues throughout the book. Aside from that, this book was AMAZING, peppered with the "trademark Annie humor" I love to read, and I have already purchased the next one and can't wait to read it!!!
It is a fun story about a boot camp for wolf shifters run by a vampire. The wolves are there for all kinds of reasons and some are not really liking the environment. Clare goes voluntarily to build her skills. Ian is a pain and is bound and sent without any input. They have to survive the locals and work together to form a pack. They are not supposed to get involved romantically.
With fun characters in a pretty interesting situation, it is an excellent read for those who love paranormal romances.
Ian is taken in the boot of his alpha's car to this training camp of werewolves run by a vampire. He is dumped there and is determined to escape something he never wanted to go to until he meets Clare, an alpha so actually volunteered to join the camp and is determined to be a success. She's short but has no problem ordering everyone around - including Ian. The training is hard, dangerous and everyone there seems to be very unprepared for what they are going to face.
I nice story of how opposites can attract and that you can't always control who you want/love. A god start to the series.
The blurb sounded really good on this one. I liked the idea of a boot camp for misfit shifters. However, the story execution left much to be desired. It didn't have much depth. It was pretty predictable. Insta-love etc. It won't be a series I will continue.
Just so you know there is a cliffhanger of sort. but it was a great book. very enjoyable to read. I was done looking for more. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I was given this story for a honest review.
What an awesome read!! From the moment I opened it, I couldn't put it down.. The entire time, I felt like I was in the book watching the whole thing... I'm heading over to get the next in the series.... Pick yours up today!
Annie Nicholas' novella "Bootcamp of Misfit Wolves: Shifter Romance (Vanguard Elite Book 1)" was a fun read. This was book one of a series that now has five completed stories and with Nicholas' warm, inviting, lighthearted tone, it is no small wonder her fans asked for more and she delivered more to them. Book one introduced several characters that likely appeared throughout the series; each character was left plenty of room to grow and flesh out as the larger story unfolded, while still being presented strongly enough to visualize and empathize with most. There wasn't a traditional happily-ever-after ending in this first story, as the tale was not entirely finished. Nicholas didn't end with a cliff hanger, per se, but rather as she answered some questions, she allowed others to pop up and grow enough to tickle a readers curiosity - inviting them to follow along with these misfits.
There were some spelling, grammar and punctuation errors scattered throughout, but none glaring enough to toss this reader from the world. The world itself is nicely crafted with settings that are fairly easy to visualize and almost feel as if one is there peeking over the shoulder - like a flea? - of whichever wolf shifter is in the forefront. Dialogue between the characters flows and is believable and authentic to each character speaking.
The premise of this novella and the series (I assume) is quite interesting. Take members from packs that are less than desirable from the pack's viewpoint, turn them over to the training skills of an ancient Nosferatu vampire, and voila - the makings of an elite group of warriors - if they survive the training, that is... now known as the Vanguard Elite. This reader loved the humor and the warmth found in Nicholas' writing voice. Therefore, I have absolutely no qualms recommending the writer and this tale.
I was in the mood for a shifter book and came across this author. I had read her "Not My" series and enjoyed it so I decided to try this series. I enjoyed this book. Ian is a werewolf who doesn't deal with authority. That isn't a good for someone who is supposed to know his place in a pack. Next thing he knew he was being pulled out of a trunk and dropped off at a derelict mansion. He's been forced into a bootcamp for misfit werewolves run by an ancient vampire. Clare is a five foot alpha female. Unfortunatley her father doesn't believe women wolves should be alpha. She has been told if she can't survive this bootcamp then she will need to come home and do her duty by marrying. Clare's only focusing is making it through this bootcamp. She doesn't have time for Ian and his his inability to take anything serious. Ian doesn't plan on sticking around at this so called "bootcamp". Unfortunately, fate other plans for them. They are mates. This is a quick, easy read. Clare's continued resistance to her feelings was a little annoying, but eventually she gives in. This was basically insta-love. Because of how short this book was there was very little character development or background information. I also wouldn't describe this as a HEA. They do commit to each other and acknowledge that they are mates, but there isn't much beyond that at the end of the book. Overall I liked the book. I do recommend reading the Omega series before this one as there are some references to that book in this one. I didn't before I read this series and was still able to enjoy this book, but I think overall it would help.
I liked this one in spite of myself. Of the two protagonists, Clare and Ian, I did like Clare from the start. Ian seemed like the proverbial a**hole until he demonstrated his care and concern for others and his willingness to bend not just for Clare, but for lesser wolves in the group and particularly the omegas.
Though this book is first of a series, the story line seems to pop out of the blue. Clearly there is a background here that must be found in the author's other numerous books, but this is the first I've read. The story is heavy on action plot, which is OK but I prefer a little more background and character development. Clare's resistance to Ian is understandable and well-presented, so the reason for her eventual surrender is nebulous. That surrender is a given well before Ian saves her life.
Nonetheless, I liked Ian and Clare, as well as Penny (omega) and Blain (nearly blind.) The human sheriff Lee (a woman) is also a tantalizing and capable character and it would be good to see more of her. I'm likely to explore some more of Annie Nicholas' work, though from the summary blurbs it seems that each book focuses on a totally new set of characters.
I am a little familiar with the Vanguard series and this is a little spin off but in my opinion you dont need to read that series to read this one. Author did a really good job at not mixing the two all that much just names mainly pop up. I really liked this book and I definitely put the rest of the series on my TBR shelf! I loved Pallas and he's a pretty tough task master! However, these misfits need it! Ian came with a bit of a chip on his shoulder he grows on you though. After his Alpha who he doesnt get along with dumps him...he's pissed. He's given an ultimatum and Alphas just dont do well with those. After a hard lesson he comes around. Clare took me a bit to like her. She had a bit of a chip too but her's was different. She's got something to prove as an Alpha Female and her pack doesnt belive in females bering superior. So, she's gotta make it or her life is to be mated to someone and take her place within her pack. Clare and Ian but heads a little bit and well they are true mates but Clare doesnt have time to deal with it. I liked the secondary characters as well and cant wait to read them.
What do you do when you are taken to a boot camp run by a Vampire , who is just this side of crazy some days . Well you either go in there as a volunteer or you get knocked out hogged tied and thrown back into the alphas car and taken there . That is what has happened to Claire and Ian . They are there for different reasons but there anyway . What they don't know is that there is more to their meeting then meets the eyes This book is such a fun light read , you can read it in an afternoon . The characters are well written and you will love Ian and Claire . They are such fun characters and some of the stuff that happens to them is so much fun to read . The cast of characters are all varied and written so well . I truly liked them all . Penny was my favourite character she was so lost but yet strong when it comes to it . The story is a good set up for a second book . It was just a little slow at the beginning but it does pick up fast at around chapter three. Then you are in for an roller coaster ride . Over all I so enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves shifters and wants a good end of summer read to take you through the labour day weekend
Boot Camp of Misfit Wolves is about loyalty, teamwork, love and pack. An elite fighting force is being trained by a Nosferatu Vampie. They are comprised of a motley assortment of geeks, rogues, Omegas and outcasts.forced to work together to survive harsh living and training in a hostile environment. They train and learn that they have a place in this world where they belong, and a pack that always has their backs. Ian and Clare emerge as leaders and a smoldering passion burns throughout most of the book until both realize what they instinctively always knew - that they are an Alpha couple born the lead this pack and help them become the fighting force they were fated to be. This is a standalonebook, part one of a series that is bound together by an overarching story. Ms Nicholas writes well and very descriptively with few errors. I certainly will continue reading to see what Fate has in store for the other interesting characters. Highly recommend as a good, fast paced read to those who love this genre. I was given a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
This tale actually reads much better than some shifter romances. The idea of a bootcamp where packs send the weaker or misfit pack members, sounds odd, but then these are all odd tales anyway. This camp is run by a vampire man, so the wolves have to train by night. By day they complain about no hot food or electricity. They are pathetically unable to light a fire although they are surrounded by woods. Never in the Scouts then.
We follow a male and a female wolf and we get adapted comments like "Who died and made you alpha?" Humans from the nearest town know about shifters and vampires and don't like them, causing trouble. I don't understand why the shifters did not tell the police about the death of a member. You can't just bury someone. This is preventing a coroner from holding an inquest and failing to report a death. Also those reponsible should be punished, if only to stop it happening again. The police know about the shifters so why not?
This is an adult romance with strong language, violence and adult scenes. I read a copy from Instafreebie. This is an unbiased review.
I have read books from this Author before this one. But none from this series or the related ones. So it's possible that the bulk of the World Building was established in the related series. I could have used more. Character development was also understandably lacking because of the shorter length. It had a good idea for a plotline--misfit wolf shifters being trained by a powerful vampire. I've yet to understand why, however.
Adult read due to sexual scenes and language. Alternating POVs. I did like the characters, and there was romance and some action. The vampire Pallas was probably the most interesting character. Unfortunately, he wasn't given enough background or print. I see he has his own book further in the series. Too bad--be should have been first.
I already have the second book...otherwise, I'm not sure if I would have continued. I'm not a fan of short books with no resolution.
As much as I like the author, this book wasn't really for me. Despite an interesting story that will clearly be a background plot for the series, we get very little information about it. Very little actually happens in this, outside of meeting the two MCs, their romance and introducing the MCs of future books. It's a bit short and a bit bland; there's no real tense moments, other than one at the very start. It's got all the components of a good book but is a bit lacking in the execution. More about the Vangaurds, a bit more of a challenge in the romance, more opposition to the relationship etc would go a long way. It was all just very short and easy. Would have given three and a half stars if that had been an option, but giving four seems too enthusiastic about a book I'm not sure I would recommend, unless you're looking for a quick, easy, HEA that is nice but certainly not striking.
