Ugly Girl Ties the Knot

Rate this book
Millie Glockenfeld's luck has finally turned around.

After years of terrible relationships, Millie has just gotten engaged to the man of her dreams. Sam Webber is adorably geeky, and most importantly, he's crazy about Millie. So what if Sam is disabled and uses a wheelchair full-time? And so what if Millie's mother doesn't approve and has decided to boycott the wedding? Life is all about rolling with the punches.

Enter Jake Winston, Millie's teenage crush.

When Jake suddenly materializes at the company where Millie works, they become fast friends. It's almost too incredible to believe when Jake confesses that he harbored the same feelings for her in high school that she had for him. But as she spends more and more time with him, Millie starts to realize that her feelings for Jake may not be entirely in the past...

It's odd that I have given both these books 4 stars as I find Millie the heroine so annoying and irritating but when I thought about it, I decided it was quite refreshing of the author to write about a realistic heroine rather than the normal unrealistic one. I'm not just talking about the fact Millie is supposedly ugly (we finally find out she supposedly looks like Adele!), I'm talking about how nasty she can be. I didn't like the thoughts she always has about Sam's body when he has no top on. She also seems to have her head buried in the sand about Sam's disability. She thinks things, but she never asks him about it and they don't talk about those things. In this book, we see a lot of Sam's insecurities and I really felt for him but him and Millie really needed to be more honest and open up more to each other.

The author wrote this second book as if people wouldn't have read the first one which seemed odd seeing as it's not exactly a standalone. I also found it odd that Sam's ex Holly who featured so much in the first book is barely mentioned in this book and in an off hand manner as if she had no significance on their relationship. There were also some editing issues in this book. Some things were repeated a few times.

As much as Millie annoys me, I still liked this book. Millie must take after her mother as she's a nasty cow as well! I liked it when Sam got angry and swore, he needed to do more of that otherwise he comes across as a door mat. I still think Sam could probably have done better than Millie but it's clear he really loves her, it's just I didn't feel convinced until the end that Millie feels the same way for Sam especially the way she behaved with Jake (luckily Jake was completely unlikeable to the reader!). The ending was a bit rushed. I would have liked to see Millie have to fight more for forgiveness and also, her mothers complete turnaround was too rushed.

I like this authors writing, it's refreshing. I wonder if she's going to write more about Millie and Sam? There is definitely scope for more.

Ah, shoot! I am sorry to leave this series behind. I loved that these were perfect people in love but rather real people with real problems that don't easily resolve in a bundle of flowers and a ring.

The main character, Millie has a few extra pounds and self-esteem issues. Her main squeeze, Sam is a quadriplegic. He's cute, but, can you see? Real issues right off the bat. Yet these two are engaged.

Jealousy is the worst part of this book. I hate reading romance stories just because of this irrational emotion. But with the lighter attitude of the series mixed with some heavy-duty issues, I think this is an almost impossible combination to pull off. But Ms. Alice Wasser does a great job of it! And the jealousy issue drops by the sideline.

This is an example of what I wish more authors would take on. Stop writing about perfect, skinny, beautiful people. They don't represent the reader. Give us diversity and let us into lives that might be more interesting, if more challenging. Good job, Ms. Wasser! Um...any chance of another after the baby is born?

HEA Covered

The story is a sweet continuation. I found a few places where it was grammatically incorrect and it rubbed me the wrong way because it wasn't even close. The worst offense is when she tells her mother that she will never find a man who will match up to Sam. Match up??? I think the proper way to phrase it is never measure up. Match didn't make any sense. So yeah, it stuck in my craw.

It didn't detract from the story but it was definitely a distraction I had to get past. Color me tight assed.

I enjoy this series. I did not care for all of Millie's decisions in this book, but I think we had to see Millie have a choice and then make a choice. Millie can be a bit selfish. I did not like the way she was internally comments about Sam's body, when she was the one that says people judge her for being overweight and/or obese and she hates it. Millie said that her BMI was 30 which in the graph/scale she was looking at states that she is obese.

Millie's high school crush works at her company. She later finds out that he had a crush on her as well. They start texting, hanging out, etc. I think for the first time, Millie was getting male attention. You get to see who she chooses and why.

Also, we see Sam and his own insecurities.

I like how we see Millie's mother evolving.

This is the perfect sequel to Confessions of an Ugly Girl. We get more of Millie's endearing, self-deprecating humor and wit. More importantly, Millie grows as a character, first through the trials of dealing with her mother's prejudice against her fiancé, Sam, who has quadriplegia, and then as her relationship with Sam is threatened. I think Sam develops more as a character, too, and we see he is sometimes flawed, which makes him more real. Overall, another delightful read from this author that kept me engrossed to the very end.

Meh

I like to find either novels with wounded heroes/heroines or love stories with characters in their 30s. In this case, the book has both but somehow the plot never came, the twist never came and Millie continued to be the most childish 33-year-old woman I've ever read. Sam was cute and the story was a super easy fast read so I'll be generous with 3 stars although it is closer to 2.

I liked it a bit more than the first. It's entertaining but very predictable, there are some style errors (why would she address the "audience" in a personal diary?) and I still don't like the oversimplifications and stereotypes, but well... it's good to pass some time.

Good read

I don’t like to give spoilers on the books that I read. I believe the blurb on the back is enough for you to decide if you will read the book or not. If you choose to read, enjoy!

I really enjoyed this story because of the adventures Sam and Millie journeyed through together. They found a way to overcome their insecurities enough to remember what really mattered - each other!

A great story filled with drama and romance, definitely worthy of high ratings

Engagement to wedding

The plot and character development continued to grow in this sequel. It was a pleasure to read. Should we all be so satisfied.🐱

This was a good sequel to the first book. even though I really like the realism of these books, I still had kind of a hard time connecting with the relationship of Sam and Millie. there could have been a little bit more detail about their interactions, as far as the passion and stuff that they felt for each other. But I guess it was more of a diary and you're not really going to put that kind of stuff and do a diary.

I loved the first book and this was just as good. Again, I read it in one evening, stayed up too late to finish it, several laugh out loud moments. The writing was good, the book well-paced and the story flowed. I couldn't put it down.

We see Millie and Sam develop individually and together, the awkward newness of their relationship last time settles into something more intimate and we also see each of their characters develop. I love the way that the characters feel real - neither of them are a stereotype or one-sided, they are not perfect but are engaging and likeable.

Then along comes Jake......and you can see things developing......and you want to shake Millie, you know she's being an idiot (she knows she's being an idiot), but you understand why......

And in the background we have Millie's disapproving mother: “My mother doesn’t like Sam…So I’m taking the coward’s way out and not mentioning our engagement until I absolutely have to. This will almost definitely backfire in my face in the near future.”

I thoroughly recommend this book, as a great easy-read but one where I fell completely into the story so it swirled around in my head afterwards.

Oh my goodness! First of all, I personally think the first was was better, but this is still as amazing! There were only two problems in the story, Sam and Millie's relationship and Millie's insecurities about her weight and appearance. The latter is something I can relate to. And I just love the fact that the author actually gets it! I mean, there are a lot of books about big girls, but the struggle and the mindset of accepting one's self is not fully grasped. But on this one, I just really felt Millie's struggle of wanting to change. And was like, 'finally-someone actually gets it!'

The characters are amazing still! The minor characters even got to shine brighter on this book! Even Mike, Donna's husband got that shine by that one small scene. It actually made me think about men's thinking about women.

At the end of the day, the message of the book is definitely the gem in all of this. Just the author's view about appearances and true love is such gold.

If there was a third book, I would definitely read it!

An honest story & honest characters.

What I like about this book, and Millie & Sam, is that they both have their valid insecurities, and they can't love each other's problems away. Sam obviously loves Millie, but she will still feel insecure for as long as she doesn't confront her low self esteem. Sam has a history of dating women who cheat on him, so he is going to be suspicious & insecure.

This is a well-written romance of two people who are far from perfect, yet still don't want to give up on the idea that they can have a happy ever after too.

I would love to see the next book. If Millie gets pregnant, what will Sam & Millie want to do for themselves, so that they can raise a happy, secure child? What internal stuff will they be willing to face if it means that they won't pass their insecurities on to their children?

I really love the tone and the story and the guys and the besties in Wasser's books. I laugh and have a wonderful time reading them.

But I *cannot* give this a five star rating. Millie won't let me. She's just... so weak sauce. She has no talent, no sweetness, no strength, no captivating personality, no passion. She's just *WEAK*. I don't... I can't... NO. Just no.

This is not to say that I don't love the book. Just not Millie. That's all.

Fantastic book

I find lately I've enjoyed book one of some series but the second book doesn't hold my attention. This book was just as exciting to read as the first one. I will definitely recommend this!!!!

*Warning: Small amount of spoilers*
I loved book one in the Ugly Girl series and book two was just as great. We went on the journey with Millie falling in love and realizing that she may not be ugly in book one. Now we go on a new journey with Millie as she and Sam plan their wedding in book two. Millie can’t seem to fully believe, still, that Sam wants to marry her. Then her high school crush, Jake, starts to work at her job. And he reveals that he liked her too in high school. Jake and she become good friends and he wants more. But there is Sam. Are Sam and she meant to be?
I couldn’t put this book down. As the reader you’ll start to feel like you are Millie. And you’ll either agree or disagree with decisions she makes. There are times when you want to cry with her and there are times when you want to shake her. But don’t worry, in the end you’ll see even though we all make choices, good and bad, there can be happiness in our lives.
The way this book ended, it might be the end of the series. But I sure hope not. I got invested in Millie’s world. And parts of her I could relate to. This author did an amazing job of making the reader bond with Millie. This book is a great companion to the first book. This series is for readers who enjoy real life romance with a touch of humor. Millie is the most real character I have ever met. I sure hope there is more to her story.
