Prince of Twilight

Rate this book
Far older than his legend, the immortal Vlad Dracul has wandered the earth for centuries in search of the reincarnation of his wife, Elisabeta. Now he believes he has found the woman possessed by his beloved's soul and is prepared to make her his for all eternity.

Tempest "Stormy" Jones is that mortal. She has long sensed the other, someone inside her fighting to take control, a feeling that becomes even stronger when the dark prince is near. But as Stormy denies the passion that burns between them, she also resists allowing Elisabeta to take over her mind and body to prevent her from claiming Vlad as her own.

But when Elisabeta discovers Vlad's feelings for Stormy, her wrath knows no bounds. She demands that her destiny be fulfilled, and seeks to destroy her rival, leaving Vlad in anguish, tormented by what was…and what could be. Now only he can choose—who will live and who will die.

I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.

My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.

No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)

That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!

And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)

Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.

Glory is not amused.

She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I

Although Prince of Twilight is very well written, I just didn't enjoy Vlad Dracul as a hero. He never redeemed himself in my eyes after his behavior in earlier books of preying on human females by kidnapping them for up to a couple of weeks, feeding on them, and returning them "physically unharmed" but with their memories wiped. The victims were emotionally scarred, and one even committed suicide afterwards. He was like a date rapist, but instead of roofies, he used his vampiric mind control arouse the women and make them pliable to his will. Vlad never expressed any remorse and appeared to cease the behavior only because his love interest and a ready blood supply arrived on the scene. I felt sorry for the heroine, Tempest Jones, but I couldn't respect her because she overlooked so much of Vlad's vile past behavior.

Apart from that, it was interesting how Ms. Shayne wove aspects of the classic Dracula story in with her blend of vampire lore and mythology. It is definitely worth reading, especially for fans of the Wings in the Night series. This is just not one of my favorites.

WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS MATERIAL NOT SUITED FOR YOUNG MINDS. CONTINUE WITH MATURITY AND DO NOT HAVE AN ORGASM.

This book is all about a romance between a 25 year old vampyre named Vlad , a human named Stormy "Tempest" Jones, and a suicidal vampyre bride. For years Vlad (not Dracula Tepes) has been in love with Stormy. But when Vlads past lover, Elisabeta, discovers Vlads feelings for Stormy she fights for what she beleives is hers. With a ruby ring that can bring Elisabeta in full control, a scroll that locks Elisabeta into the human world, and a vampyre with outrageous hormones, there is bound to be a war.

Another perfect book in the Wings series. Although it doesn't have as much intrigue as the rest, this one touches base on the characters feelings a lot more. The events leading up to the climax and ending are perfectly wound together, the way it should be. At first, it felt like I was missing something, a long stretch between the last book and this one, but as you read the story, the 'stretch' is brought back and explained, and timed perfectly as well. What can I say? Maggie knows what she's doing.

I feel conflicted reviewing this installment to the Wings in the Night series. One the one hand, it was a captivating ride from the first page to the last, delivering so many revelations about this little universe that Maggie Shayne has created. I think that as a stand alone novel, it would work wonderfully. However, I have to admit that it doesn't completely sync up with the novel that came before it. Such care was taken in describing the emotional damage that Vlad did to his female victims before, and the way that he demanded Damien's whereabouts in the climax of Blue Twilight--neither of these things are ever fully brought into play in here. I found myself thinking that Lucy may have been a better character from the original Dracula to name drop as Beta's last spiritual descendant as well, since it would have painted her death and transformation in such a tragic light. That's off topic though. Despite my nitpicking, "Prince of Twilight" is still a good story. Sexy, action packed, and calling back characters from older installments that are always a delight to see again. Definitely worth reading.

And of course, I arranged one of my thoughts into a haiku:

"If you love someone,
Remember holding too tight
Hurts them in the end."

Although this book is #12 of Wing of Nights series, I think it is also a good stand alone book. The story is quite engaging and a page turner. In fact, I never read a vampire plus with 3/4 part of the book is about romance.

Stormy (I don't know why Shayne picked up this name) is very bold and quite confident with herself in order to win Vlad over Beta. While Vlad, he's a Dracula which I can feel how he felt for Stormy and Beta. He was confused. To choose either Beta or Stormy. Yup, that's rather interesting storyline of a softhearted Dracula. At first, I didn't know it was a type of romance novel, I'm not really into those but I kind of love vampires. But as I read, this one pretty good.

Pretty good, yes. However, this book was a little confusing when they had a lot of "flashback" scenes. It would take me a paragraph or two to figure out whose memory flashback we were seeing and interpreting. Other than that, there's no interesting actions involved for a vampire story. And for that, it's quite boring. It's like the story was just about two mean girls fighting over a guy they love. Otherwise it was a pretty OK read.

Sixteen years after Vlad Dracula (yes ... THAT Dracula) took Tempest Jones away from Maxie and Lou, we meet up with her again. A little rounder and a little older, Stormy still remembers her time with Vlad

... and she is still in love with him.

Vlad is still searching for a way to bring back his wife, Elisabeta, who commited suicide 500 years ago after hearing that Vlad had been killed while defending the borderlands.

Vlad knows that he must find the ring and the scroll that the magicians and socerers from 500 years ago imbued with power so that he can release his Beta. He only has a few days to complete the ritual.

But at what cost? Can he pick Beta over Tempest? Who is he in love with? How powerful is that love?

This book was one of the better Twilight series novels. True and palipable heartfelt emotions soared through Stormy and Vlad. Beta's reintroduction into a corporeal form was entertaining too (reading about how she discovered Coke and how it made her burp - hilarious).

A slight twist at the end made it all the more endearing.

Maybe I should have read the entire series in order instead of just picking up the this novel. I really did not like Vlad. He was entirely too domineering. I picked the audiobook up because of the prologue. Vlad seemed so very sympathic and I wanted him to get what he needed to make him happy. However, the first part of the story made me want to beat Vlad with the compassion stick. I also felt sorry for Beta because Vlad created her situation and then chose Stormy over her. I think that Damien should have just let Vlad go.

Unfortunately, it most definitely means I will not pick up the next one- Demon's kiss? which sounds really good.

Just my humble opinion.

I have read the book when Stormy and Vlad met and this is the end of their story.
Well written, flashbacks to tell about the time in between.
Now the time is ticking away before the end of Elisabeta and Stormy. Of course it is not an easy ending, there are lots of moments of tension and fights.
And who will Vlad choose his wife from 500 years ago or Stormy?
At the end of the book after some hot and erotic moments you will know the answer to that.
I am not going to spoil it for you.

After I got done reading Maggie Shayne's "Prince of Twilight," I felt that I needed a cigarette.

Shayne has done it again with "Prince of Twilight." Her weaving of eroticism throughout the plot brings a fast pace, quick read to life. She has hit every nail on the head to make this a successful novel. The characters, plot, scenes, transition and dialogue all exceeded a seasoned reader's senses.

Maggie Shayne's books are always a highly recommended books.

I've got a couple more books left in the Wings Twilight series. I'm going to go back and re-read them in the correct order (I got out of order on a few) and then write my reviews. I'm almost sad that I'm at the end of all the books. I've been flying through them at the speed of light. Just can't get enough.

I found this book on my shelf and ended up just skipping through the whole thing by paragraphs until I got to the end. It may be because it was a random book that I found out after was number 12. But in the while scheme wasn't very interested in it

I don't know why I read this book. Normally I like books with vampires and romance, but this one!
Sure, there is a bunch of sex with a hot vampire and a sexy girl (who is also very strong and intelligent!)
Can't recommend it although I think it is considered 'chick lit'. Whatever that means......

Thank u, next!

See, I have this totally Love/Hate relationship with the series Shayne writes. I remember finding the first book in the series and liking it. Then buying a couple more and not liking it much. Now that I have run out of my usual go-to-books when I need something sweet in my life, I reached for Wings in the Night again and...
So, this is probably the most confusing of them all. I don't follow the logic in which the series were put together so suddenly going from one book and then jumping sixteen years to the future as if nothing happened somehow doesn't answer all my questions. It only creates more. Aaaand there is this whole thing about Dracula. Yup, this is his story, so naturally there are the great expectations.
Boy, isn't this one the sappiest in the series I've read so far. It's somehow very wrong. In the previous book you get this strong woman who can stand her ground and makes decisions and suddenly (well, not so suddenly, there's this 16-year fast forward after all) she becomes this crying clingy type you must hate. I mean you can't like her. Ever. And to say nothing of the Prince of Darkness. You want the epic story, you want the evil vampire he has become and instead you just get a love-sick puppy who can still pose as intimidating as you want him to be but it's all just an act which will dissapear way too soon.
I don't really know what to think because this is, unfortunately, not the last book I bought during my optimistic shopping spree so I will inform you how the series goes in the future. I mean, it can't be worse than this, right?

Vlad - the second ever vampire (Iskur, Gilgamesh's servant) - has lived a long time... in the 15th century he is adopted by a Romanian king, and fights for him... and falls in love with fragile Elsabeta... they are married after one day, have one night of passion, and he is called to duty. it is reported he is dead, and Elisabeta (who had lost her entire family to plague) jumps out of the tower, to the rocks below. but Vlad cannot let her go, Rhiannon (priestess of Isis, and Vlad's progeny) tells him that she can see that he will meet up with her reincarnation in about 500 years, calls in 5 wizards to bind her so that she will remember him and their love... the wizards snag a piece of her soul in her wedding ring, and give the ring & the incantation to use when he meets her again - with a deadline of Venus crossing something - 520 years in the future... but Vlad looses the ring when attacked after buying her & his angry rampage following is what books have been written about... and he lives in hope that he will be reunited with her somehow, but is unsure since he does not have the ring/scroll.

Tempest "Stormy" Jones works with two vampiresses in Supernatural Investigations Services. Stormy is aware that she shares her body with another, who occassionally takes over it... She is strong (practices Tae Kwon Do), she is smart, she is focused. And she looses 2 weeks of her life when she meets Vlad, and Elisabeta recognizes her husband and Vlad recognizes her... and Stormy falls in love with Vlad - going with him to Romania to where Elisabeta lived - to try and free her... Rhiannon takes Stormy away from him after he wipes most of her memories, because Elisabeta fights too hard when he is near and it is tearing Stormy apart... but Vlad takes up residence close to Tempest and watches over her the best he can... 16 years later - Stormy is 38... and the ring has been uncovered, is in a museum, and the Sisters of Athena (who strive to keep balance between humans & supernaturals) know her history & tie to the ring, and want her to steal it and give it their keeping...

And there is 5 days until the deadline, when venus crosses whatever... and Vlad comes for the ring, comes for Stormy/Elisabeta... and Stormy regains her memories day by day... and Elisabeta grows in strength... and Stormy cannot resist Vlad (who in turn cannot resist her) but who does not want to sacrifice herself to Elisabeta... and Stormy is unsure of Vlad's feelings for her personally, and most often is convinced he is only using her to get access to Elisabeta... Elisabeta connects with one of the sisters who wants eternal life... but the sister's body is rejecting elisabeta's soul...

and the climax comes after Elisabeta/sister stabs Vlad, Stormy sews him up, feeds her his blood, has sex with him and leaves him in the morning... and when Elisabeta realizes the sisters & Rhiannon want to release her soul (and kill her), she hides in Stormy's car when she leaves... and at the coast where she expects to die when Vlad completes the ceremony to get back his wife, Elisabeta attacks her, shoots her, stakes her, and demands of Vlad that he come to her with the ring & scroll... Vlad tries to trick her and perform a releasing ceremony, she catches on and shoots Vlad and starts the real ceremony... as the spirits start to pull, Rhiannon shows up and stops them and the sisters take Elisabeta/sister to perform the incantaion to release Elisabeta... and now we all realize that 16 years ago until now Vlad knew he loved and chose Stormy, but that he could not let Elisabeta know without sacrificing them both... but now he is dying... then Damien (the first vampire/Gilgamesh) shows up, gives him his blood directly on the wound & heals him... and they are left alone to make sweet love... and confess their true love... and he assures her that he will stay with her until he dies, and that will be the end of his time too... and then Stormy is pulled into a light, to Elisabeta, who isn't crazy anymore but is scared to move into the light and stormy helps her... but the light is their better self, and is welcoming to Elisabeta who is reassured and happy as she is embraced... and a shock of light hits Stormy, and knocks her out...

Vlad rushes her to Rhiannon and Damien... and as she awakens, she feels strong... and Rhiannon is first to recongize she now has the antibella marker (she is complete, now that her better self is complete)... and Vlad turns her, they share blood back and forth and back and forth... and Vlad predicts she will be stronger than Rhiannon, as she has both his and damien's blood... ahhhhh

. Dodicesimo volume della serie Wings in the Night. Tale corpo appartiene a Tempest Jones detta Stormy. Tre stelline.

Vlad returns in Prince of Twilight, but he's still not quite the star of the show. We got to really know Stormy Jones in previous stories in the series, and saw a lot of her in the book just previous (#11). In fact, book 11 seems to really set the stage for this book very nicely - even if this one happens several years later. Vlad is still looking for a way to reincarnate his dead wife - whose soul currently lives in Stormy. But doing so would kill Stormy, which he doesn't want to do either.

Elisabeta (the wife) has no such scruples and just wants to come back any way she can. She makes quite the bad guy, especially since Stormy can't ever get away from her. The time Elisabeta has spent inbetween living and dead has warped her into a vindictive demon like essence. Much of the story revolves around her and Stormy duking it out mentally and spiritually to see who will remain in control.

In the long run, Vlad will have to choose which woman he loves more. I had my doubts he would pick the right one for a long time! Maggie Shayne really knew how to draw the suspense out on this one in a good way. The closer I got to the end, the harder it was to set the book down and return to real life.

The only big draw back to this story was that it didn't seem like its own complete book. So much happened between Vlad and Stormy in book 11 and so much is revealed through flashbacks that I really felt like history was being summarized and fed to me instead of drawing me in and just telling me about it. I'm still loving this series and the characters, so you'll be seeing a review for book 13 soon.

Warning this is a book meant for those 18+

I've read a few Maggie Shayne novels and I loved quite a few of them but sadly this one has so far been disappointing. The story line sounds amazing and the characters sound strong and deal with lots of complications but I think the reason I could not fall in love with this particular book myself, is the main character Stormy. Through out the book she is proclaimed to be a strong independent woman who can overcome Vlad's temptations and fights Betta on a constant basis. But since I've bought this book three years ago I haven't been able to commit because she is very contradictory to how I was led to believe. She sounds to me as a damsel in distress than a heroic maiden determined to beat the odds.

Perhaps this book is just not for me and i think those that are interested in the romance and Vampires would enjoy this book. It has some midevil settings and current time settings and lots of dramatic moments and a mystery to it. The Prince of Twilight is part of a series but I didn't even know that until today so it can be read as a stand alone book.

Continuing the saga of Vlad (Dracula) and Stormy and Vlad's dead wife's soul. There is a lot of racing around and capturing only to loose them action, but the story was a little slower than I like. The flashbacks helped to fill in Vlad and Elisabeta's backstory and what happened with Stormy after she was abducted, but the long length of the flashbacks was enough that present reality was lost.
Since I've wondered what happened with Stormy and Vlad after the abduction, I'm glad I got a chance to read this, but a novella might have been a better choice.
Barring all of the negatives, if you are a fan of the "Wings in the Night" series you definitely don't want to miss this installment. The question of who Vlad will choose is left unanswered until the very end and the book is worth reading just to find out what takes place.

Synopsis:

Foretold centuries ago, it is a destiny they cannot escape...
