Praise for Alexander Fullerton‘His action passages are superb, and he never puts a period foot wrong’ Observer
‘You don’t read a novel by Alexander Fullerton. You live it’ South Wales Echo
‘The most meticulously researched war novels that I have ever read’ Len Deighton
Alexander Fullerton (1924–2008) was a British author of naval and other fiction. Born in 1924 in Suffolk and brought up in France, he was a cadet during the years 1938-1941 at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth from the age of thirteen. He went to sea serving first in the battleship Queen Elizabeth in the Mediterranean, and spent the rest of the war at sea - mostly under it, in submarines.
Fullerton's first novel SURFACE! sold over 500,000 copies. Then he worked on the 9-volume Nicholas Everard series that made his reputation.
I thought it would be my sort of read but I found it hard going. Seemed to stretch things out a bit but as with all my reviews, this is only my opinion.
For my money, Alexander Fullerton was one of the finest thriller writers of the 20th-century, his war service as a Royal Navy submariner giving him unique insights into military life. Sadly, hardly any of his back catalogue is still in print and none of his works are available as ebooks.
If you can hold of them, the 'SBS (Special Boat Service) trilogy', Special Deliverance, Special Deception and Special Dynamic are terrific books.
In Special Dynamic Ollie Lyle (an SBS sergeant first seen in Special Deliverance) joins a group of academics on an expedition into Lapland. There he comes across a huge Russian operation that is fostering a violent Lap separatist group as a prequel to a full-scale invasion.
This is perhaps the weakest of the SBS trilogy (the plot is a little far-fetched), but still a fine book with some great detail on arctic survival skills.
