As a cold case heats up, two former adversaries discover there is a thin line between love and hate.
TASK FORCE HAWAII, BOOK TWO
Seven years ago, Dr. Elle Middleton’s world crashed and burned. She has rebuilt her life and found comfort in her work as the medical examiner for TFH. When a new case leads to a cold case, she is beyond excited for the challenge, until she finds out the one man she wants to avoid is her partner on the case.
Graeme McGregor isn’t any happier with the assignment. The doctor gets under his skin in more ways than one. He’s avoided her and his attraction by keeping his distance from her, but working with her has made it impossible to resist taking a little taste.
One kiss leads to another…then to a full blown affair. But even as they draw closer to each other, secrets from that long ago murder rise to the surface. The killer’s determination to stay free leads to a dangerous confrontation that puts both of their lives in peril and could leave TFH in shambles.
Hostile Desires is the second book in Melissa Schroeder’s Task Force Hawaii series and can be read as a standalone. Greame and Elle were both likeable, realistic and well-developed characters and I loved their bickering and the chemistry between them. The secondary cast was interesting and diverse as well. A thrilling, well-paced story that kept me guessing until the very end who did it. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who loves romantic suspense.
* I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
While there was some police stuff with this book it was more about the romance between Elle and Graeme. These two seemed to be an unlikely couple. I loved that Elle was older than Graeme, that Graeme had to work a bit to overcome the objections that Elle threw out. I was glad that Graeme was able to because the 2 of them were cute together and Graeme managed to cut off any issues that would come up. Elle really needed someone that was firmly in her court.
It was fun to see everyone on the TFH weigh in on the pairing.
The ending to this one was great, it showed that Graeme was willing to listen to Elle and give her what she needed.
5.0 Star Review Hostile Desires (Task Force Hawaii #2) by Melissa Schroeder The Task Force Hawaii team works on a variety of cases in conjunction with local, state and federal agencies. Over the last 12 months I have found myself gravitating to the romantic suspense genre and in my humble opinion Melissa Schroeder is one of the best I have read. She brings the stories to life so well and her writing is of an extremely high standard. I thoroughly enjoyed Elle and Graeme’s story. In the first book in the series, Seductive Reasoning, they were often found to be sniping at each other. Now they need to work together to solve a cold case and ensure that a killer is brought to justice. Working together brings feelings to the service that neither of them wants to admit too or even act on. It’s a fine line between love and hate. There are so many twists and turns to this book that I was riveted and stayed up late in the night. I couldn’t put it down. This book is exactly what I have come to expect from Melissa Schroeder, well written and thoroughly enjoyable. I anxiously await the next book in the Task Force Hawaii series. If you are looking for a book that is hot, spicy, romantic and suspenseful, then look no further. . Congratulations Ms. Schroeder, you have another winner on your hands.
Dr. Elle Middleton is an English rose transplanted in Hawaii. You would think that she would feel out of place, however, Elle has never felt more at home than here in Hawaii and with her new friends. Yet, Elle has learned that sometimes you can't trust those you think are friends in the past when she was violently attacked while on the job in England. Because of just how nasty that part of her past was, Elle took an instant attitude against one of the Task Force members—a sexy Scot.
Graeme McGregor couldn't believe when he got the job and became a part of the Task Force. After all, his background was in the military, not in police work. But it was the perfect job to help Graeme adjust to life after the military and yet be able to use his skills to the best of his abilities. Graeme is attracted to the medical examiner of the Task Force, and he doesn't understand why she is so unfriendly to him, as she has been since they first met. Not that it has dampened his attraction any.
When a murder that Elle is sent to investigate while covering for the HPD suddenly becomes connected to an old cold case, Elle and Graeme are forced into working together to see if they can track down the killer of a young girl—a killer that was never caught. Elle and Graeme begin to collect everything they can about the old case and soon discover that something strange was going on during that investigation. Slowly, they both begin to uncover more and more evidence of a botched case. The question is, why? Was it just because murder wasn't common in Hawaii back then or was something else going on? While gathering the clues in their cold case, Elle and Graeme discover that their attraction is mutual and just why Elle was so mean when they first met. Now their passion is alive and vibrant, and their cold case has become an extremely hot case—one that when the final showdown happens, will either take down a cold-blooded killer, or it could affect the Task Force forever.
An English rose and a Scotsman have moved to paradise in Hawaii, yet their relationship is mired in a search for a cold-blooded killer in Hostile Desires. I fell for Graeme right away with his compassion for both Elle and the young girl whose killer they were now searching for, not to mention his rescue dog. Elle's past was horrible and I could understand why she acted as she did to Graeme originally. I loved watching as Elle and Graeme worked their way past all the hurdles between them and as they fell deeply in love. At the same time, I enjoyed watching as they used everything they had to track down the killer of a young girl and bring him to justice. When the killer was announced, I found that I had half-guessed correctly, but I'm not going to tell you which half, because that would just give too much away. What I will say is Elle and Graeme's romance and search for the truth is well worth the time to sit down and enjoy. I can also say that I'm really loving this series so far. If you haven't read the first book in this series (Seductive Reasoning), I would encourage you to grab it first and then go on to Hostile Desires. But if you just want to read about Elle and Graeme, their romance does stand alone, too.
Two lost souls are brought together by work and an cold case. There were always tension between Dr. Elle Middleton & Graeme McGregor. But work for Task Force Hawaii always comes first and the team always knows how to put work before their feelings!
Book 2 of TFH is just as great as the first! The crew is back, and it grows the connections that they all have. It also brings out Elle's story. With Elle having been distant in book 1, it was nice to get more of her life. She was able to show a personal strength and individuality that kept her strong through all the negativity. This also allowed her to be the person that people turned to for advice.
Graeme was the right kind of sexy and sensitivity! Being raised with 4 older sisters he knew exactly how to treat a woman. He listened at the right time and built a woman up when a man had broke her down! He was just what Elle needed, when she didn't know that she needed it! Hawt Scot Love!
The Task Force Hawaii Series is set in one of the most beautiful sceneries in the world, but like all beauty, Melissa Schroeder shows that there is a dark side. The TF works together to clear away the gloom and keep the team in tact!
I loved this storyline. It was deep in how it showed a woman at her weakest moment, but there were always strong friends, family, and lovers to pick her back at. The men of the story were not MACHO... They were not afraid to show their sensitive side and they definitely loved the women who allowed them in their life.
Melissa did it once again! She definitely has begun a series who has a great cast of characters and keeps you wanting more.
Absolutely Amazing! Melissa Schroeder nailed it in the next installment of her new Task Force Hawaii book. Graeme is a walking sexy dream, the Scottish Highlander. Elle is an elegant English Rose with a dark past. Their story made my knees weak and my heart ache as they discovered love. It was a perfect combination of sass, romance, and sultry heat plus add in an adorable dog, I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoyed this story.
Melissa is not afraid to discuss serious subjects as this story unfolds. Elle is rape survivor. Graeme is ex-military. She does an exceptionally job at showing how Elle survived her past. Melissa also explores the fight our soldiers face when returning home and growing problem of suicide.
I love how the story moves forward, finding the killer of a cold case. The stickiness of the case that potential involves a cover-up keeps you on the edge of your seat. As each lead is explored, Melissa suddenly gives you something from the killer’s point of view. Just enough to rack your brains to mentally rewind to every character you have meet to see who the killer is. She kept me guessing till the end.
Plus, we get more of the team, Del, Emma, Adam, Marcus, Charity, Cat and Drew. The connections, the closeness of this group is evident. I can’t wait to read the next installment of this series. This is a must read book for 2016!
I did receive a copy of this story, in exchange for an honest review. This is a must read series!
Melissa Schroeder has hit a new plateau with the exquisite seduction of suspense and emotional depth in her newest release in the Hawaii Task Force series, HOSTILE DESIRES!
Elle is not quite the woman she shows to the world. Suffering a past that would most could never fathom, she chooses to live on. A brave and strong woman that keeps people at an arm’s lengths to protect herself, who is filled will sweetness and sass.
Graeme, oh my! Let me pause to melt for a minute or five. An Alpha of the best kind. Strong, commanding and sexier than words can describe. Loyal in every sense of the word. Graeme hold a kindness and gentle manner that makes him sweet and romantic. Add in that Scottish brogue that you’re mind automatically switches to whenever, he’s on the page. Hence, pedal on the floor!!!
I said this with Melissa’s first book in the Task Force Hawaii series and I will say it again with HOSTILE DESIRES, this is her best work. Ms. Schroeder knows her characters well, how to shake up a plot and keep readers turning the pages. Perfectly balanced romance and suspense, HOSTILE DESIRES intrigues the reader and makes them want more. Graeme and Elle are perfect for each other and watching them get there was worth every page. Our friends of the Hawaii Task Force add to the humor, wit and drama making HOSTILE DESIRES a fabulous suspenseful read with more emotional depth than you would expect.
An enjoyable story, not much in the way of suspense until the last couple of chapters though, but all the Task Force characters are very likable and I enjoyed the fact that the stories are all interconnected and that you get to catch up with the main characters in the previous story as well as learn more about the other Task Force members, and there is a lot of potential for future stories in this series.
This one focuses on M.E Dr Elle Middleton who left England 7 years ago after her marriage imploded, and the serial killer case she worked on put her life in danger, and Graeme McGregor an investigator on the Hawaii Task Force, and former Royal Marine from Scotland. Who has in the past had a very rocky relationship with Elle. That is until they are asked to work together on a cold case, and start to find they have more in common, than both hailing from the U.K and although the story itself does deal with some hard issues including Rape. It is all handled with a lot of sensitivity and the relationship that develops between Elle and Graeme is well paced and not at all rushed which helps make it believable and I would therefore happily recommend this story to others.
What's not to love about a specialized group of cops working in Hawaii? This series has a little Hawaii Five-O flare, a little CSI, a little soap opera and two transplants from across the pond. Graeme, the sexy Scot in a kilt (slightly disappointed it appeared only once), and Elle, the tough as brass ME from London decide to put their attitudes aside and get it on. Elle's past experience, failed marriage and victim of a terrible crime, gave her reasons to despise Graeme at first sight. Graeme, however, decided to push her buttons and take advantage when they grabbed a case together. A murder from thirty years ago comes to light through a drug induced robbery/murder and TFH got it solved. Schroeder always gets the mix just right, the spark with passion along side solving an exciting case. Graeme's dog is a riot and quite the ladies man by stealing more than his fair share of scenes. The TFH series will have books focusing on a specific couple but the background characters and their past will be part of future books. You could read out of order but you miss some of the connections. As part of Schroeder's review team I received my copy for my honest review.
Once again author Melissa Schroeder has created another sexy, romantic suspense series that I've become addicted to. Her latest story, Hostile Desires, book 2 in the Task Force Hawaii had me reading page after page without wanting to put it down. I really liked the hero and heroine, Graeme McGregor and Elle Middleton, who have a love/hate relationship and avoid each other at all cost. We all know there's a fine line between love and hate and Graeme slowly chips away at the barrier Elle has chosen to put up to protect herself with a kiss and they actually have more in common than they first realized. I love how patient and tender Graeme is when he is with Elle and lets her be in control in the bedroom so she is not frightened. These two are quite sexy together and their love story is really beautiful. I loved how the author has blended romance and a murder mystery together in this book and that it involves a variety of recurring characters. I really enjoyed seeing the continuation of Del and Emma's relationship in this book and I am really looking forward to the next one in this series.
Another amazing novel from Melissa Schroeder! I was intrigued with Graeme and Elle in the first of this series, Seductive Reasoning, so I was thrilled to find this was their story. They are both guarded people, and did their best to stay away from each other, as they got under each other's skin, but when they are forced to work a cold case, together, the truth behind their actions is revealed.
Elle's background as a rape survivor is not swept under the rug, but dealt with in her personal and professional life. I appreciated how honestly this was done. Graeme is the perfect male lead to help Elle get through this. He has become one of my favorite leads.
The case they are working had me in suspense the entire book. It wasn't until the very end that I found out who did it, and it was a shocker! There is also a heartbreaking scene, at the end, that I didn't see coming. Well done, Melissa Schroeder! I can't wait for the next in the Task Force Hawaii series.
I was given an ARC in return for an honest review.
This book is romantic suspense at it's VERY BEST!!! Elle, "the English rose amongst all the tropical flowers" with an unbelievable strength to endure all the horrors of her past and still persevere. Graeme - Hot and Sexy with a sweet side that had me Falling for him right along with Elle. Their feisty bantering, mixed with their strong sexual attraction, really kept the pages turning!!! Dumfries, the wolfhound mix that had saved the unit and been their mascot in Bagdad. Graeme brought him home because "all of them knew you didn't leave one of your men behind". The dog adds some funny moments to the story and Yes- I fell even more for Graeme. Captivating suspense - exceptionally developed storyline - one step at a time! Loving this series! Outstanding team members - can't wait for each of their books.
Elle and Graeme have intrigued me since Seductive Reasoning, the first book in this series. Mel definitely did not disappoint. She dealt with Elle's past so well. I loved how Graeme was so patient with her and her past. We had previously learned a little in the last book, but it all comes to light in this book.
This time the mystery is a cold case that has Graeme teaming with Elle and the rest of TFH. A child's murder that keeps you on your toes in figuring out who the bad guy is. I was a little concerned but as always Mel made it suspenseful but with a HEA. The fact we see Del and Emma's wedding, the rest of the Task Force Hawaii, and Jin just made this book even better.
There is romance, intrigue and Graeme in a kilt. You couldn't ask for more. I highly recommend this book.
I looked forward to reading this book ever since reading Emma and Del's story, "Seductive Reasoning", what a great continuation. In the same style I came to love from Ms. Schroeder, the story is charged from the beginning and it doesn't let up until the end. Graeme is so lovable... and sexy... and patient... and very attracted to Elle who doesn't seem to be very friendly from the beginning. The story shows how the sparks of misunderstood attitude turn into hot and sexy as they are forced to work together to solve a crime case that gets more dangerous and complicated with each clue they find.
This may be Melissa Schroeder ‘s best book yet! Elle and Graeme will burrow into your heart and take up residence. We met Elle & Graeme in Seductive Reasoning (Task Force Hawaii, #1) and they were oil and water. They couldn’t be in the same room without snarling at one another but now they need to work together to close a confusing cold case. Graeme discovers that Elle is not the cold fish she pretends to be and had her reasons for keeping him at arm’s length. Now knowing he is determined to defeat each reason. Elle is surprised with herself when she finds herself rooting for him to succeed. The case heats up and so do they. Hostile Desires is romantic suspense at its finest.
Task Force Hawaii is a fantastic group of very different people and oooooooh Graeme baby! This story kept me on my toes trying to figure out the who done it before the end, I liked the twists and turns and the romance was incredible too!
Another brilliant story by the amazing Melissa Schroeder! I was intrigued from the very beginning and didn't want it to end. Love how she incorporates our favorite Harmless characters. Can't wait to get my hands on the next book of this series!
Graeme and Elle are so cute together, and having to work together on a cold case brings to light their love for one another. I love a book that has a little mystery and loving together.
Mel Schroeder at her best. The hunt for a serial killer, and the blossoming love between two members of The TFH team. If you like a mystery with a side of romance you will enjoy this book.
I love Melissa's books! The Task Force Hawaii series is yet another masterpiece. Hostile Desire has a great storyline. I could not put it down. I would recommend it everyone.
Holy hell that was one emotional book. Jin and Elle? I don't know how I would deal with what they have been through.
Elle had a traumatic experience that was made even worse by her jerk of an ex husband and friends/ colleagues. She came to Hawaii to make a new start and she has made a home. She still had some issues to work but she loves her life. Helping Jin and her trauma has brought back memories and sometimes when that happens her bitchiness comes out, as Greame knows first hand. What doesn't help is her attraction to him.
Greame isn't a big fan of spending time with Elle after a cold and hostile first meeting with her. It hit him in a vulnerable way. This Scotsmen actually the fit hubba hubba Scotsmen very much cares what the people he works with think about him. So when he gets that greeting for no reason at all he doesn't like it one bit. Especially since he can't stop thinking about her.
When these two have to work a cold case together, they have to learn to be nice to each other. And boy was this interaction fun and frustrating to read. I understand why Elle was weary about her feelings for Greame because of her past. God I wanted to go and throat punch everyone who did her wrong. I mean come on these are people who know better and deal with this sort of thing and they attack the victim. Greame I think would've of gladly beat them all till the bled. He was so patient and caring with her and angry for her. LOVELY AND HOT. Oh the mums going on at them hahahaha would've loved to see that meet. And apparently the team still get involved hahaha well they are all family.
Once again I got completely hooked. This had me in tears as few times both for the pain of the past and beauty of the future. Such a great read :)
This would have hit the 5 star mark for me but the h blew it for me when she went on the attack against a fellow employee who was asking for help in talking to the woman he cares for. I know that she was stinging from what her POS Ex did but the 'friend' didn't understand why his crush was having such a tough time getting past her traumatic experience. Instead of explaining, she treated him terribly. To top it off, the H continued the poor treatment, even knowing that no offense was intended AND that he was only trying to understand why his crush was suffering so he could help her. This was unintended gaslighting 101.
This is something that many writers do to make the MC less culpable for their own poor actions.
In her defense, she went through a very horrific and traumatic situation and was then dumped on those who should have been supportive. It is also the reason that she should have been conscious of not doing the same thing to others.
I did love the rest of the story and it is by far, my favorite in the series. Listening to Constant Craving now so I obviously invested in the characters.
This was a 3-star read that might - maybe - have been a 4-star if it had been edited - or possibly just edited better. The constant repetition of information that an editor should really have caught, the odd typos (including the name of the victim at one point), the weird lack of contractions that jarred me in Book 1, and the desperate need for someone to go through and Britpick the slang... all combined to repeatedly pull me out of the story.
Not to mention the ending, which just felt... forced, with everything coming to a head in the last 20 or so pages, and the killer ending up feeling like a character Ms Schroeder just picked at random - nothing in the plot up to that point seemed to indicate he had anything to do with the case.
On the plus side, I'm now 100% certain that I don't want to continue with the series, so that's one more set of books I can cross off Mt TBR.
The last thing Dr. Elle Middleton expects, or thinks she wants, is to team up with Graeme McGregor on a case. But when paired together the two find they have a lot more in common than they anticipated. While their slowly developing relationship is enough to pique your interest, the cold case they are working to solve adds just the right degree of intrigue to make this a captivating romantic suspense. It’s a highly entertaining and passionate tale that will keep you turning pages from start to finish. The characters are unique and appealing, and their interactions are engaging. You’ll find this fast-paced story easy to read but hard to put down.
Both Graeme and Elle are transplants in Hawaii. It's different seeing the beautiful island from their point of view. Graeme is so patient with Elle knowing that she just needs time. Elle knows what she needs and wants, Graeme is it. While you can read this book as a stand alone, I think it would be best to read in order. All of the characters from Seductive Reasoning are in this book and with relationships growing or starting, having the background helps.
Graeme and Elle work together at Task Force. She can't stand him and it doesn't really have anything to do with who he is but his background. He wants to get to know her but they clash constantly. Elle had a horrible marriage and other devastating occurrences at the time. She doesn't feel that she will ever be able to be with someone again and now she has to work with Graeme on a cold case. Will they be able to find the killer? Will Elle let her defenses down and let Graeme in?
Elle and Graeme were so good together. I love the chemistry, opposites attract and kind of an enemies to lovers theme. Although I wouldn't call them enemies exactly they just had an uneasy relationship in the beginning. I enjoyed watching Elle really embrace the team and grow, past troubles made relationships difficult and I found myself wondering if her personal problems would be overcome. I'm really enjoying the TFH team!
Good read, interesting characters and plot. Book 2 of Task Force Hawaii, can be read as a stand alone, no cliffhanger. All of the characters that were introduced in book 1 are back. This book focuses on Elle and Graeme's story. When they need to work together on a cold case, they finally resolve the conflict that we seen through out book 1. Read their story and see how they get their HEA.
This was better than the previous one. The love story was more fleshed out. I think because the whole story arch was at least in this one book. But the mystery part had kind of a sudden end. There’s not a lot of build up. They’re just fooling around and then one call randomly and suddenly everyone knows who it is.
