Reunited with his beloved Sarah, Blue Hawk, a half-breed known as Caleb Sax in the white world, builds a ranching empire in Texas despite the war with Mexico and attacks by Comanches and outlaws
I am a USA-TODAY best-selling author with 41 years, 76 books, and numerous writing awards behind me. My major genre is historical romance. I have always written for standard publishers but am now writing strictly for Amazon so I have more freedom to write real history. My most recent publication is SHADOW TRAIL, the 6th book in my Outlaw Hearts series. I also wrote and published my first full-length contemporary story, DANCING BENEATH YOU, in September 2022, a romance involving mystery and a depiction of reservation life in the Badlands of South Dakota. My best sellers are my SAVAGE DESTINY series (7 books) and my OUTLAW HEARTS series. See my website (www.rosannebittner.com) for details on all my books - most available for Kindle and in print. I am known for great love stories filled with real history and high emotion. I have also written many Native American stories, all based on real history.
I love American history. For those of you who have not yet read my books, my stories are generally set in the American West of the 1800s and feature vividly described, historically accurate settings that span the US from Missouri to California, from Canada to Mexico. Many of my books portray the poignant history of our Native Americans, and though the characters are my own, I use real historical locations and events in all my novels. I have also written about the French & Indian wars, American Revolution, the War of 1812, the war with Mexico (the Alamo), and the Civil War.
National magazine ROMANTIC TIMES has called me the "Queen of Western Romance" and an "emotional powerhouse." My husband and I have traveled the west for nearly 40 years and I have visited just about every location mentioned in my books.

It never takes me this long to review a book. I finished this four days ago and am just now getting to writing it. I've already started the next book in the series, too. Ugh! Oh well.
A lot happens in this installment of the series. It's so full of angst, war, hate, violence, and the never-ending love between Caleb and Sarah. All of the characters are strong, well-developed. and easy to like...or not.
Caleb's children are growing up. He's already lost one son and two wives. He doesn't want to lose anybody else he loves and goes to extremes to make sure that doesn't happen. But not everything goes as he wants it to and he faces death in the most diabolical and tragic of ways on more than one occasion. It tore me up. I wept with him a few times, especially after the raid on the Comanches. Read the book to find out more about that.
Caleb has been reunited with his daughter and loves her like nothing else. He's extremely close to his eldest son, Tom, then he has two more sons, John and James (not twins). John and James are much younger than Tom and James is having identity issues. He looks like his mother with the fair skin, light hair, but has Caleb's blue eyes. He doesn't want to acknowledge his Indian blood because of all the things that happen to Indians just because they're Indians. His denial of his heritage is a point of contention for Caleb, who is a proud Cheyenne and is teaching all of his children and grandchildren about their heritage and how to survive. The others are learning and taking it to heart, while James wants no part of it and is rather scholarly. This is a whole facet of the story that grates on Caleb and is portrayed well. It hurts his heart. Anybody who is a parent will understand this.
As I mentioned above, this is a time of war between Texas and Mexico. We see some action at the Alamo, meet some historical figures such as Stephen Austin, Sam Houston, Santa Anna, and we see death and destruction. But we also see the rise of the human spirit, the American spirit, and even the Native American spirit until everything just disintegrated. It was heartbreaking. The war wasn't just between Texas and Mexico.
This was a tough read at times. I didn't crack a smile even one time. I spent some time in tears and wondering where Caleb and Sarah got the strength to endure everything. There's love and loss and a semi-happy ending that will make you want to read the final book of the series.
This is a series and the books must be read in order.
Her books could be a lot better if it was not for the very detailed and frequent recurrence of violence in this series .I was able to finish the first book, started to read the second, and I was so anxious to read about Caleb meeting is daughter for the first time (which he did not even know she existed) not one word instead Sarah was ready to give birth to a child from Caleb. That event was completely ignored, instead Ms. Bittner felt that at that special event was necessary to insert for good measure, an attack from Comanche indian. I need not go into details about the violence and destruction that went on, but I have to admit that she excellent on destroying every tender moment all throughout the book.Out of frustration I decided to read all the reviews and I came to one that reveals how the series is going to end.THAT DID IT. If it was a real book with pages I would have thrown it in the garbage, but it is on my Kindle so I put it in the cloud. At this moment in time we are all going through some rough times and me personally I like to read about history but not with level of violence in this author 's books there is enough of that on TV. I am not sure I will raccome
The Blue Hawk series by Rosanne Bittner … absolutely the finest of any HR series featuring Native Americans that I’ve read. This includes zillions over the years … all of Lindseys, Janelle Taylors, Catherine Andersons, most Cassie Edwards, over 40 Bittners, Brandewyne, Joyce etc. If you only read one series with this trope definitely pick this one.
1. Savage Horizons (1987) 2. Frontier Fires (1987) 3. Destiny’s Dawn (1987)
🐎❤️ This is the story of one man and the love and losses that destiny brings him, and also the story of the growth of a nation. Blue Hawk, born of a white man and Cheyenne mother, orphaned, and then as a young boy adopted by a white man and his family, and renamed Caleb Sax. Devastatingly handsome, long black hair and gorgeous blue eyes.
📚❤️ Sarah Sax, the beautiful young daughter befriends Caleb, helps teach him English, and they first grow to love each other as brother and sister… she’s the rock in his life even tho as their story unfolds they endure long separations and marriages to others.
🇺🇸 Series covers from the late 1790s thru 1865 and contains a considerable amount of historical detail from the early settlement of Chicago, War of 1812, Texas and the Alamo, California gold rush, and Sand Creek massacre. Bittner’s books can be relied upon to be sensitive and accurate.
The story is filled with plenty of tragic heartache, drama, angst, violence…, with the tension extremely high. All the characters are sharply drawn from Sarah and Caleb, their children, the despicable villains to historical figures. Most importantly, it’s heartwarming and good!
🔥🔥🔥 A wealth of passionate love scenes which are emotionally romantic, sizzling, and beautiful written.., very little purple prose.
The last book completes Blue Hawk’s Circle of Life, and is filled with a love that lasts forever… be prepared for a few tears while you realize you’ve just finished a magnificent masterpiece. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+
Blue Hawk books, 1987 editions with the covers by Franco Accorneo.
Book two of the Blue Hawk saga. First I would just like to say how much I love this series. This is a re-read for me and even though I know how it all turns out I experience all of the tensions and emotions that permeate this book. When Caleb "Blue Hawk" Sax is born his Cheyenne mother predicts that he will forever struggle to find his place in the world. Indeed, the very indian looking man with the very bright blue eyes stands out in both worlds, marked as differet. His choice to love a white woman dictates how he must live.
"He was the hawk...all power and strength, sharp of eye and full of courage and daring, rising high and visiting far places. But she was the wind that carried him..." .
The years are 1833 to 1842, Caleb and Sarah are 37 and 34 yrs. old. They have been reunited after a horrific 18 year seperation. Caleb came with the early settlers and Stephen Austin to San Filpe de Austin, which will someday be Austin, Texas. Caleb has fought through drought, food shortages and deadly attacks from the Comanche Indians. Each time Caleb is knocked down he gets back up determind to succeed in this white mans world. Now Sarah has been returned to him, he has a beautiful prosperous ranch, and his sons working beside him. However, tensions and foreboding feelings shadow every move Caleb makes. The population has exploded with displaced Southerers, criminals, and schemers all vying for the free land and bringing with them anti Indian Sentiments. Byron Claussen rears his ugly head once again threatening to destroy Caleb and Sarahs life. The need for independence from Mexico blows up and Caleb finds himself again in a white mans war. Through it all there is Caleb and Sarah's love that endures all. I have given this five emotional stars for the sheer ejoyment of going along with Caleb and Sarah as they fight for each other.
Excellent book for the first time I turned the page could not put it down. lots of history it. really enjoyed it immensely. would recommend this book to anyone..thank you very very much
Be ready to shed some tears as the saga of Caleb (Blue Hawk) and Sarah's journey continues. The way the Americans treated the Indians and the cruelty they have to withstand is gripping. Rosanne Bittner certainly knows how to write true western historical books that speak right to the heart.
Love Miss Rosanne Bittner's stories and this one is one of her best. Book two in a trilogy and the story of the Sax family just gets better with each book. If you love romance and survival get to reading.
