The Girl: Rowan McClain has everything a girl could ask for: a handsome, charming husband and a successful career as a romance writer. But when Prince Charming’s affections begin to wane and her mother’s cancer returns, Rowan’s perfect world begins to crumble.
The Guy: When Army Lieutenant Luke Cartwright arrives in Iraq, the last thing on his mind is falling in love. But when a friend gives him a copy of RJ McClain’s book, he writes a letter to the author using his friend’s name on the return address. After exchanging several letters and sharing their deepest secrets, the two become unlikely friends.
The Happily Ever After? After a year with no letter from Iraq, Rowan becomes convinced that the soldier she had befriended has been killed in the line of duty. Now divorced from her husband, she moves on with her life. But when her sister sets her up on a blind date with a soldier named Luke Cartwright, Rowan begins to feel as though she has met him before. Will she give into her feelings for him? Or will thoughts of the man she had come to love through his beautiful letters keep her from giving her heart to Luke?

This book was recommended to be by a friend and I trust her to have pretty good taste. Well she didn't let me down. What a great love story! This was surely destiny for both Rowan and Luke. I loved every minute of it and look forward to Talia's story!
This is such a beautifully written story that will have you smiling throughout. I love when our wounded warriors get a story with a HEA and this one is that and more. Rowan and Luke are both characters with many layers that fate has decided to bring together and although their beginning was anything but normal, they found their connection. Even when circumstances caused them to lose touch, they were destined to be together. I loved how Rowan was with her family and how she worked through her failed marriage. Luke needed to work through his past and his military time in order to move on and be capable of love. Great story, great characters, and very well written. Highly recommend!!
Hmmm. 2 stars. There were parts of this book that felt really true, but there were more parts that felt manufactured. There was so much “tell” and not enough “show”.
Wow!! What a great read that I didn't want to end.
From page one, I fell in love with this book. The characters were so well written. Absofreakinlutely loved Luke and Rowan. Even though their time together was not until the last 10% or so of their book, the chemistry just flew between them before that with their letters. Their thoughts and feelings towards one another, the heartache they went through was so touching.
There was so much depth to the characters in this book. Their story flowed so well, their emotions were depicted so well. Even though the story is short, so much was provided to us. (I literally read it cover to cover without stopping). Fantastic story line, great descriptions to details, awesome character development and the dialogue flowed so nicely and was engaging.
This is one of those books you don't ever want to end. I fell in love with this from the very beginning and was rooting for Rowan and Luke, falling in love right along with them. The characters were well developed and the storyline is very real. I felt like I was truly reading someone's life story. I laughed and cried, felt the love and the heartache, felt loss and hope, and most importantly it helped remind me of again of what our soldiers, and their families, go through while they fight to keep us safe. This is absolutely added to my 'make sure to read again' list. I highly, highly recommend this book. Definitely 5+++++ stars.
This was my first book by Ms. Whitfield Vince and I can easily say, it was one of the most endearing, touching, heart warming, and emotional books I've read in a while. I didn't want Luke and Rowan's story to end. Although, based on a true story, in my opinion, it was a story not only of love, but of healing, comfort and the joining of two lost souls.
The author, through her story telling, brought the characters to life. They were engaging and, as a reader, I felt extremely close to them. As if, I was right there living in the situations with them. The trauma each of them endured, was life changing, especially for Luke. Both lifting each other up, and supporting each other, the way no one else had ever been able to do. Hence, for me, their story was spiritual. God bringing them together. As they discovered, through their letters to one another, they had much in common, in that they were both lost souls, just trying to find their way in life. Thereby, bringing healing and comfort to one another.
The story opens with Luke serving in the United States Army as an officer. He is stationed in Baghdad, Iraq. He joined the army to run from his past, and in the same light, so he wouldn't have to deal with all the pain and loss he had endured during his young life. While back in San Francisco, California, R.J. McClain, a young uprising author was dealing with her own kind of pain, disappointment and loss. They meet vicariously through the mail, as R.J. McClain had sent a care package to Baghdad. After a particular tragic day fighting in the trenches, Luke's friend and fellow officer, Talia left him a card and care package that had been sent from the states. After reading the book from the author, he decided to write a thank you letter, not expecting her to write back. In lies the development of their unique friendship and love for one another.
I most highly recommend this book to those who would enjoy a book about trials and tribulations with the ultimate art of finding healing and comfort through trust and faith.
I was given a copy of this book by the author. This is my honest and humble opinion of the book, as I see it. I voluntarily leave this review.
This is a great story. I would give it a 4.5. It is a page-turner. I kept thinking that I would read just one more chapter. and then just one more chapter and on it went. I finished it in just a couple of days, and if time had allowed, I would have read it straight through. The book is Luke's story and also Rowan's story and I like how the author worked the stories back and forth as she relates how Luke, stationed in Iraq, is given a romance book from a care package by Captain Talia Fournier. In a moment of desperation and loneliness, Luke decides to read the story and then is compelled to write to the author of the book, R.J. McClain, but to remain anonymous by using Talia's name and address. The letters continue over a period of time and then stop with both individuals being very interested in each other, but neither really knowing who the other person really is. The author reels the reader in well as she writes 'the story' of an author and a reader and what happens in their lives.
I saw this book advertised through another author's (Charlene Carr) newsletter and the cover caught my attention first. I am certainly not disappointed.
While Luke was in Iraq, he received a care package from a stranger back home. Included in the package was a "girlie" book. At first he laughed at the idea of him, a tough, leader of men, reading a romance novel. But then he did eventually read this book and it left such an impression on him that he wrote to the author. But he didn't use his real name. He never imagined that she would write back, but she did.
Rowan was going through so much during this time of her life. Her mother was dying of cancer. And her marriage was falling apart.
These two strangers, a world apart, provided much needed emotional support for each other.
I highly recommend Suzanne Whitfield Vince's "The Other Side of the World: Rowan's Story" to anyone who loves a good, clean romance
A sweet clean romance novel. I read it in less than 24-hours elapsed time, I had to tucked a sleep break for my eyes in there! If you only read one book this year... this one should be "The ONE". I am ever so thankful that I have had the opportunity to meet the characters in this story.. I hope to find more stories by this author from sources that fit my reading budget. Thank you Suzanne for writing/publishing this 5-star book.
I downloaded this ebook from my local library because the blurb looked interesting. I just finished it and I really loved it. It was a quick read but I felt the characters were well defined and the plot was so sweet. I’m going to check out this author’s other works.
This is the first book I have read by this author and it drew me in immediately. It was easy to relate to the characters and become invested in their happiness. The story itself was rather unexpected, but in a good way. If you are looking for a very physical steamy read, this isn't the story for you. But if you want a book where true love grows between two people who are drastically changed by events in their lives, then you will thoroughly enjoy this read.
I found myself really liking both Luke and Rowan. It felt like I should be inviting them over for a barbecue or to my kids' birthday party. Luke was a real surprise to me. He's initially presented as a rough-and-ready soldier, typical man's man. But as soon as he writes that first letter to Rowan and pours out his soul, you see the true man beneath that exterior. And with what happens in the latter part of the book you see him struggle with a change in his physicality and coming to grips with the man that he is now. And I found myself identifying with Rowan on so many different levels. My heart broke for her as she had to struggle with marriage and family health issues at the same time. And all the while she found a friend in the anonymous "guy" writing to her from over seas. Someone that she received no judgment from, someone that she could trust and eventually came to love. The ending, oh the ending...absolutely perfect end to the story (and yes I cried LOL).
Not only is the book a love story but there is a much bigger picture that we begin to see. Both characters experience events that forever alter the course of their lives. It is only then that they find out who they truly are inside and begin to understand how they fit into this new world that is presented to them. No outside influence for Rowan telling her she's not good enough and Luke positively influences the people around him, becoming a role model for an often forgotten group of people in society. Maybe you'll get something different out of it when you read it, but those two things really stuck out to me as I dried my tears at the end.
Dios mío, de esas historias que te mueven!! y más por estar basada en una historia real. Me hizo llorar, no de tristeza sino de emociones. Necesitaba leer una historia así. Totalmente recomendada.
This book really struck a place in my heart because it is based on a true story. It is like a fairy tale for those of us who believe in happily ever after. Rowan McClain is a romance author who married her high school sweetheart, Evan. Their life was going just like their 5 year plan until Rowan quit her job as a CPA to become an author. Evan was still following the plan hoping to become a partner in the law firm he worked for. He thought his wife writing girlie books was silly and unprofessional and he decided he didn't want to have kids. Luke Cartwright was a lieutenant in the army stationed in Iraq. He had dropped out of college after his parents had been killed on Christmas Eve. He had broken up with his girlfriend after he flew to see her and found her in the arms of another man. He decided to enlist in the army and he buried his feelings towards his dad and his girlfriend by taking care of his unit. One day a close friend brought him a care package. One night when he couldn't sleep he started reading the girlie book that was in the package. He found he could identify with the author and her feelings so they started corresponding together until Luke was discharged from the army. Fate steps in next. This story made me cry because it was based on a true story. I want to read the other books that Suzanne Whitfield Vince has written! I received an advance copy of the book for my honest review. I loved the book!
Rowan McClain can feel her husband pulling away, but hopes its just a rough path that some couples go through.. On the other side of the world, Luke Cartwright is fighting in Iraq, fighting for his country and fighting for the lives of his comrades, caught in a roadside explosion... Getting them out alive is his top priority, hearing their screams keeps him from sleeping at night, which leads him to reading a book by a beautiful author.. He writes to her, not expecting a reply, but she can't help but write back, forming a bond that gets them through the hard times.. Back on home soil, Rowan can't take much more, ever since she took up writing and deviated from their "plan", she can feel her husband pulling further away from her.. His insults are demeaning and they break her heart... Then her heart shatters as she receives devastating news, her life falls apart and she loses someone she feels a soul deep connection to.. Both Luke and Rowan must rebuild their lives without each other, facing an uncertain future.. This is story about love, heartbreak, longing and grief... I was an emotional wreck reading their struggles and pain.. It is so beautifully written and heartwrenching.. This is a definite must read, but I must warn you, grab a box or two of tissues, you're going to need them.. I really need to read the next book in this series!!!
This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster. It pulls you in from page one and holds your attention until you turn the last page. I was so engaged in the story that I lost all track of time and read straight through. There was something so vulnerable about Rowan and Luke. Each fighting their own demons and yet finding their way to each other emotional and eventually physically.
I loved the way the author wrote this book. She included enough war to let the reader know what was going on, but focused really on Luke's mental state. I think writing the story that way really helped the reader to invest in and connect with Luke. I did feel like his sudden personalty change after his injury seemed a little rushed, but overall, it didn't impact my reading experience.
One of my favorite about this book was that the relationship truly develops emotionally first. There's that instant connection between Rowan and Luke regardless of how they fight it. It made the physical meeting seem almost effortless.
Overall, this is a fantastic story and I look forward to reading Talia's story!
I hated the book had to end. It was like reading someone's life story. This is a story about an Army Lieutenant Luke Cartwright and an author Rowan who becomes friends through lettersafter he reads one of her books. He uses one of his buddies name when he writes her. Normally Luke would not read the type of book it was. They develope a deep connection. Luke is in Iraq. Rowan is having troubles with her marriage and her mother has cancer. They both need someone to talk to. The letters stop. Did Luke get out of Iraq alive and safely. What happen to Rowan's mom and marriage?
You won't regret reading this book. I'm thankful for Suzanne Whitfield Vince giving me a free copy of this book in return for an honest review. Its been a pleasure to read it and I look forward to reading another book of hers soon
This was an amazing story. Because I have never read this author before, I always worry that I will have trouble getting into their work. I can honestly say that is not the case. This was a remarkably thought out storyline that draws you into the tale right from page one. You get a sense of each character from the first introduction and your perception does not change as the story progresses. With each letter you see the importance that small gestures from home have on our military personal and how something that you might think is small and unimportant can become a treasure to someone else. Luke and Rowan were great characters and easily captured your heart. The fact the book is based on a true story makes it all the more intriguing and makes it easy to get lost in this romantic tale. I look forward to reading more from this author and hope to get book 2 soon.
I loved this book!! This was such a sweet story. Rowan is a romance author and she loves fan mail. When she receives mail from a soldier, she is intrigued. The characters were well developed and I could see this all happening. I was hooked from page 1. I can not wait to read more from this author.
☆☆☆☆☆ I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Recommend this book? Yes! Author? Yes! Read more from this author? Yes!
I started reading this and had to finish it to see if the soldier made it home from Iraq and how Rowan was coping with her marriage and her mother's cancer.
Doctors are special people. - two lady doctors helped this couple find each other!
I received a free ebook for signing up for the autor's newsletter. I need to read more that she has written!
One of my top five favorites... ever. This book left me speechless and with my heart in my throat the whole way through. The emotions were intense, the characters were perfect and it will take me a long time to get it out of my head. I am in love with Luke and Rowan and wish their story had never ended.
This was a very moving story about the power of love and how one person really can make a difference in someone else's world. Ms. Whitfield Vince's best work so far.
Omg.....not 5 stars but more! Absolutely the BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN 2017 TILL NOW
How could I describe this book?It was pure perfection as only a true story can have.
It took and broke a part of my heart forever after having let me cry over dozens of kleenex.
I left you with some lines that described how was valued from the point of view of the female protagonist the letter sent by The Guy to the Girl:"... a letter filled with such raw, honest emotion. It left her breathless, speechless". Best words to describe this book did not exist.
It was Well Written. Magical .Painful.Full of Bitterness but also of Second Chances in life. Touching. Real.
Both characters took my heart since the first lines. I deeply, completely loved them as all the secondary characters.
This book made you believe in God/fate written in the stars/ beloved people watching and protecting you from the paradise.
