Heine's efforts to shape the princelings into worthy successors to the throne continues, but it seems that Bruno in particular is struggling with a bit of a crisis of conscience when it comes to his future. Can he live up to Heine's standards to remain his "apprentice"? More importantly, does he have the courage to carve out his own path?
Volume 4 delivers a nice balance of comedy and drama. We first get three fun standalone chapters that feature the brothers’ affection toward their cute sister, Leonhard’s stupidity, and Licht’s acute sense of perception. The focus then shifts to the line of succession, and more specifically, the person Prince Bruno considers his chief rival for the throne. Not only do these chapters shape Bruno into a more well-rounded character, they also heighten the sense that someone is out to sabotage the four brothers’ chances to become king.
The Review
As with Volume 3, half the material in Volume 4 was not incorporated into the TV series. Most of the non-animated chapters are at the beginning of the book and comprise, for the most part, humorous fluff that poke fun at the princes’ quirks. The volume opens with a group art lesson in which the princes must paint a portrait of little sister Adele. What results is a cute, light-hearted chapter that displays our cast’s idiosyncrasies on canvas.
The remainder of the book has Heine dealing with the princes in ones and twos as it often does. Chapter 20 “A Troubled Prince!?” is a brief Leonhard-centric arc which, like most chapters about the fourth prince, is a display of his dismal academics. Unfortunately, this iteration doesn’t vary much from previous ones so I found the gags stale. However, the next chapter, which features Licht, is much more intriguing. Cafe fans will get to enjoy the youngest prince in his waiter uniform while he attempts to pry into Heine’s private life.
As we enter the material included in the anime, the narrative takes a more serious tone. Heine’s job is to groom the princes as worthy candidates for the throne, but we’ve never seen the brothers treat each other as rivals. This changes with Chapter 22. Although the set up is somewhat different than the TV series, it similarly introduces Bruno’s hidden insecurities and sets the stage well for the two Bruno-centric chapters that follow. Thus far, Bruno has alternated between a rigid academic and a gushing Heine fanboy. In this arc, we see the circumstances that led to his strict lifestyle as well as a glimpse of his sense of self-worth. Of all the princes, Bruno is the one most firmly grounded in reality, and to watch him agonize over the options for his future goes a long way in fleshing out his character.
Extras include “Character Profiles” printed on the inside of the cover; one page “intermission” manga; first page printed in color; and translation notes.
― Rating: 4 Stars ★★★★ The Royal Tutor series is truly a gem! Following a tutor as he takes up a vital task of ensuring the royal princes are ready to take the throne. Full of comedy and plenty character-driven arcs, this is an underrated manga that hasn't gotten the attention it deserves.
In my efforts to read more owned books on my shelf, I decided to continue this manga series (also because I'm trying to *actually finish up the anime!). As this Vol. has chapters mainly explored in Ep. 7 from what I've seen so far, I enjoyed seeing Bruno's perspective nearing the end & his own insecurities as he wonders whether he's meant to follow the path of his studies or continue with his path towards the throne. I'm interested in learning more to his backstory similar to Licht in the previous volume!
The first few chapters here we're pretty much standalones to deliver comedic fluff & slower character-driven side stories about the princes as their lessons continue, which I found so fun. Chapter 19 where they have the task of painting their own portraits of Adele (their little sister) was one of my favorites because of how HILARIOUS their art skills were, the comedic timing & jokes were as funny as ever. It also reminded me why despite the slow progression to this series is, I genuinely enjoy reading about the princes and Heine in all the different scenarios that they get pulled into.
Chapter 21 was a nice side-story where Licht (who works at the cafe), decides to place a bet with the professor where if he wins, he gets to know more about his past (which is hinted at very briefly in the beginning of the series). I liked how Heine gave the story about him being a mysterious thief, seems so plausible...I still believe part of that story had some truth to it..but only future volumes will tell. I loved Chapter 22 because it showed what the king does on somewhat of a normal day & having Bruno + Leonhard showcase their different skills in observing (or in Leo's case, helping a subject of the kingdom). This leads into the final chapters that focus more on Bruno that mirror the anime.
Currently leaving this at 4 stars because story-wise and structurally, the plot is mostly stagnant here & there's more appreciation to me for how the anime covered this volume. However, I also like how the series shows the different pov's in royal life or the elements that the princes should consider as they continue their studies with Heine.
Will say though that chapter 19 where the princes show their art skills, in addition to Ch. 21 & 22, were definitely my favorites, did find myself laughing at some moments here which I love about this series.
I'm interested in continuing the manga as I watch the anime too, seeing how they differ but also seeing where Bruno, Kai, Licht & Leo's stories are headed.
The Royal Tutor Vol. 4 while fast-paced and entertaining, does offer some well-developed chapters that build on the learning the princes have acquired thus far, in addition to more insight to the cast being layered in slowly across select chapters. A unique series full of humor and character-driven arcs that slowly build on its unique premise sure to expand in future volumes.
Bruno is on the cover of this volume, so I was expecting there to be a focus on him in this one, but I was pleasantly surprised that there was a nice chunk of Bruno...but also the other Princes! I have to say...I always have to take a few moments to stare at the gorgeous art on the cover...and then on the full colour page...and then the chapter covers....I spend a lot of time admiring the artwork for this series. It's gorgeous and it really fits with the series! There's a brilliant amount of detail, and some nice fancy touches too!
This volume gives us some fun character profiles on the inside covers, and I'm going to be interesting to see if they come to anything...but I don't want to spoil it so you'll just have to see! This volume has some brilliant little episodes, all while driving the story forward and having each seemingly separate episode...actually relate to Bruno and his doubts and struggles in the last chapter.
Heine has Adele join the Princes for a little art lesson, and Leonhard is amusingly clingy. But this volume lets us see how far Leonhard has come since we first met him. He's changed a little bit, deciding for himself not to give up at the first hurdle and push himself forward rather than running away like he used to do. Without too much prompting from Heine too! He genuinely wants to study and has questions...and I'm so proud you guys! *sniffle*
Interestingly, Licht appears to be on to Heine. He may be my favourite but I do acknowledge that he seems like an air head at points....but it's pretty clear that's just an act. He knows Heine and the King must know each other and he offers to be there for Heine, a nice touch...and it's also setting us up for some reveals about Heine!
Leonhard and Bruno get to work with their father so we get a day in the life of Viktor, allowing us an opportunity to get to know him more, and see how he interacts with his sons more. As well as letting us see the Princes strengths and weaknesses and how they approach certain situations...and see what kind of King they may be. We get a lot of insight in to Bruno, not entirely unexpectedly, as well as his motivations and his relationship with the eldest Prince, whom we haven't met yet! I'm waiting for him to appear and cause all kinds of chaos. Not going to lie.
Poor old Bruno has a rough ride this volume, he struggles with what he wants to be and do and his achieve and what he thinks he can and can't do. It was quite relatable, to be honest, I really empathised with him and was rooting for him to overcome it! I did pause when he was offered a certain opportunity and I genuinely wasn't sure which way he was going to go, despite having seen the anime! Things are quite different you know, and we've got so much manga only content recently!
The bad news is the Count or whatever he is, is still meddling with the Princes and it looks like he's finally set his sights on Heine next. Next volume could be the volume we've all been waiting for....the one that reveals Heine's history, who he really is, where he came from and how he knows the King! Or it could, you know, build up to that and then leave us on a cliffhanger...
Volume Four is another solid instalment in a series that's both heartwarming and humorous, with four Princes that are shockingly relatable! The plot moves forward at a nice pace and everything weaves together perfectly!
I love how they're focusing more on the princes individually. Showing Bruno's fears and what drives him does make him a bit more relatable. Although geez are we ever going to meet the crown prince? The villain dude is still there trying to drive a wedge in, but it's nice to see why the princes remain and desire to truly help the people.
Okay, for real, why is the count not going after Leonhard FIRST?! Seriously, he's the dumbest (academically) and least capable (despite what the manga wants you to think) so WHY the FUCK is he wasting his time with Licht and Bruno when he could VERY EASILY get rid of Leonhard?! Argh, this is so simple and yet he's choosing not to! Whatever it takes to drag out the story, I guess.
I have to say, I'm not 100% invested in this series right now, but it's not bad. I think it's just my mood, but I'm not loving this as much as I think I should. I'll try to finish what I have, but I'm not making any promises at this point.
I'm not sure what is so funny about drawing sexy women in your drawing lessons. Clearly, readers are supposed to think "tee hee, isn't that amusing?" But it really isn't to me!
Sex? Nope, but one of the princes gets bored in class and draws scantily clad women.
Swearing/Profanity? Not that I remember
Violence? No
Magic? No
LGBTQ + characters? Not specified.
Could a conservative Christian school library include it?
I really love this series. 😍 this focuses on Bruno (the cover shows that obviously) he's not my fav out of the princes but I do like his intelligence & how he works to prove himself through the amount of knowledge he has. I can relate to that lil😌 when I was lil. I also love the mixture of cuteness, humor & subtle life lessons in each book so far. Ugh I adore this 🥰💕
The part at the beginning of this one when the princes have to draw their sister was absolutely hilarious. The story moves along nicely and has equal parts humor and touching moments. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series so far.
Penasaran sehebat apa pangeran pertama. Dan melihat ke-4 pangeran lainnya, aku jadi berpikir kalau yang bakal jadi raja selain yang pertama itu si Leonhard. Alasannya karena dia yang tidak punya bayang-bayang ke depannya XD
I started reading this series because the anime got me here. I would rate this a 5* it's because the series occasionally address real-life problems which I could relate. The series had taught me a few important lesson along the way. (I don't mean to sound cliché, but I really do picked up some pointers while reading this.)
As each princes faced a difficult situation, Heine would always prompt them instead of giving a direct answer which I guess that he wants the princes to think for themselves which is a really good approach in my opinion.
I definitely recommend this series as it is quite light-hearted as well as a bit of slice of life.
Pointers: The chibi’s are really cute and I can't stop myself from gushing every minute I saw the chibi (esp Kai) (*´꒳`*)
It's been a great story so far, we have seen most of the princes in their natural state and broken them down to see where they came from. Now we go full circle with Prince Bruno's backstory. With Bruno's backstory we also get a lot of information about the Eldest Prince. All while this is happening the Count continues to try and control the paths of the Princes behind the scenes.
So this was a good volume. I liked the plot and progression. The characters are great and I love the growth they are showing. I can't wait to continue this series.
