Passion ignites for an outlaw and his captive in this western romance by the USA Today –bestselling author who "keeps getting better with every outing" ( Publishers Weekly on Beloved Warrior ).

I saw this novel on Bookbub and thought the plot sounded interesting, so I ordered the book. The opening chapters were especially strong and believable, setting up the background and introducing the two main characters—Shea Randall and Rafe Tyler. Other reviews probably give the plot: a Civil War officer is wrongly accused and convicted of a crime, then branded and imprisoned for ten years, during which he plots his revenge on the man who wrongly accused him. When he gets out of prison, his friends kidnap the daughter of the man he wishes to destroy. I felt that the novel struggled a little getting the required length (novels often have to have a minimum of 70,000 words) as it describes their developing relationship—Rafe trying to keep his distance and hate even as he and Shea at intervals come together. There is sometimes really good description (the sky is a “jeweled tapestry”) and lines (“you can’t allow the past to rule the future”), though the mouse and baby cub parts of the plot sometimes seemed a bit sentimental to me. I liked the ending. On the Amazon site, a second author, Cassandra Livingston, is listed, but she is not on the cover of the novel itself. Perhaps Livingston is an editor?

This incredibly powerful story from Patricia Potter will certainly hold your interest. It seems to tell the story that revenge is best served chilled by a 10-year wait.

The prologue is staggering! Rafe Tyler, a career captain in the US Army in 1863, is found guilty of theft (but not treason) in a military court. He is stripped of his rank, uniform and commendations - then sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

But that wasn't enough - they also branded a "T" on his right hand - to forever label him a thief! As the punishment was being meted out, Rafe stared intently at his false accusers. His eyes sent them the message that he would pursue his own justice - after jail!

He survives the horrors of the full 10-year sentence by fueling his hate for the false witnesses and plotters: Major Jack Randall and Sgt. Sam McClary. He also has 6 friends - men who served under him who knew Rafe was innocent.

They got jobs and started digging for information about Jack Randall - who, with the stolen money from the Army, retired and started a large, successful ranch in the Colorado Territory.

Because of Jack's addiction to theft, his wife left him years before, when she found she was carrying his child. They never reconciled and she never told him about the child; she told everyone her husband died in the war. Jack sent her lots of money over the years but Sara never spent any - because she knew the source - theft.

Sara and Shea (the daughter) eked out a very simple existence because money was tight. When Sara died, Shea found the letters from her father (to Sara) and the stacks of money. She wants to know what happened between them (her mother was unfailingly honest) and heads to the Colorado Territory.

This book also explores the issue of "If you get revenge, how do you spend the rest of your life -- after hating so long?" Incredible!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. He was falsely accused of a crime he did not commit and ended up in prison for 10 years. He seeks revenge but a certain female adds complications. He falls in love with the daughter of the person who was behind his conviction. Lots of action and HEA ending. Will probably read again.
