Hraban the Marcomanni has been cast out of his tribe by his treacherous father Maroboodus. He has lost his tribe, his mother and both grandfathers, and his fame and honor with the ones he loved. He has been lied to, he has been used to further his father’s plots and in the end discarded, and his lot was to linger in slavery to Odo, a priest to Lok until he would die, having fulfilled the needs of a deadly prophecy.
However, he refused to die.
Instead, he escaped Odo and the Roman ally king, Vago the Vangione, and took the head of his mother’s slayer. Now, he will go home. He will go home to burn his father’s hall for revenge, and to erase the blot on his fame, the title of the Oath Breaker, by deeds of bravery and spears. He has much to pay back for, his friends to rescue and his fame to regain.
Yet, his allies are few and none come without a price. In the end, Hraban will find the road to regaining his fame is twisted and tricky, and what he will find might be entirely different from what he set out to gain.
I just don't love these books like I love the other two series by Longward. If someone gives me the next book then I will read it but it will be a long time before I buy the next book in this series. I will wait it out for his next books in his other two series that I enjoy so much or try out one of his other books.
A novel of epic proportions, Raven’s Wyrd is the second in the Hraban Chronicles by Alaric Longward. Certainly not an easy read, we travel with Hraban as he seeks vengeance on his father, as well as to return his lost honor. While some might consider Longward wordy, each sentence and plot line has a purpose, coming together gloriously at the end. We’re left feeling satisfied in some aspects, but longing in others. The battle descriptions are so vivid, you can almost see the fine mist of blood hovering over the clashing armies. Intrigue runs rampant, but there are also softer, emotional moments. I loved the intermix of real and fictional people, and I cannot wait to see where life leads Hraban.
This novel was a Kindle Unlimited download, I was curious what was behind the book cover. First, Raven's Wyrd is an EPIC story, Hraban's world violent and full of vengeance. There are so many characters with plots and subplots, twists and turns, that it makes Games of Thrones seem petty! It had to read the first 20 pages over and over again, as I didn't realise this is book 2 but once I caught on, it's quite page turner. I am impressed by the details, clearly well researched into history of Rome/Germania. Recommended
The second book in the Hraban Chronicles is a true gem. It continues the story of Hraban in his quest for vegence. A storm of political intrigue in the barbarian tribes of old Germania while these fight among themselves and against rome. With big battles, desperate moments, violence, good humor, betrayal, roman sandals, there are a lot in this book, even some romance in a barbaric germani way As good as the book are the author words at its end where he tells us facts from fiction in the story so we can have a better understanding of the world at that time.
Awesome! I'm still buying audiobook when it's released
This series is fantastic! That last battle I swear I saw every detail all around! Alaric LongWard is an amazing word crafter, story weaver I haven't enjoyed a series as much yet!! I'm a little concerned that Hraban comes to a terrible end though because the way he's telling this story doesn't sound like it's coming from a strong, successful angle. His courage & berserker/Lok gifts & all he's overcome being betrayed on every side I want him to crush his enemies and win vengeance for all who were wronged
This is a classical adventure story set in the lands of the Germani during the era of Augustus. I am trying to mix in a light layer of historical accuracy with a fairly brutal story, and I did throw in some magic as well. The book is not for the faint of heart and features plenty of violence and adventure during a very war-like era.
Great book. Very likable characters as well as despised. I don't want to get into it because most people write great reviews for terrible books. See for yourself how different this book is from all bad stories out now. I will not compare this to cornwell like most do or any other writer. This story stands alone, it's original and kept me turning pages .
In this second book Hraban’s story continues as he tries desperately to take control of his fate. Just fascinating! I’m eager to find out how his life turns out. Alaric Longward’s historical books are filled with intrigue and unexpected events, just great!
