Oh! Oh! I have a cool idea!
I think Marvel should replace all of their main characters with other characters.
Like, instead of Scarlet Witch being Wanda Maximoff, maybe Tony Stark can get sucked up into a skybeam, spit out with All-New All-Different chaos magic, & be the new Scarlet Witch? M.O.D.O.K. as the new Vision? Or how 'bout Peter Parker gets hit by a lightening bolt, and takes over as the new Storm?!
Me + Ideas = AWESOME!!!
Pretty sure the fans will love it...

description

Ok, so the premise here is that Amadeus Cho is the new Hulk.
How did he get Hulk-powers, you ask?
Well, random reader, volume one gives you a peek, but doesn't fully explain that yet.
Patience is a virtue!

description

So far, it looks like something spoilery happened, and while he was trying to help his friend, Bruce Banner, something else spoilery happened and he ended up with his power.
So where is Bruce, you ask?
No idea. But it doesn't seem like he's dead, so my best guess is that he's roaming around somewhere in the 616 universe.
I know. With deductive skills like mine, I should be solving cold cases for the F.B.I.!

description

So Cho, aka genius kid & Hulk's #1 fan, is out to prove that Hulk is the best superhero out there. Especially now that he's tucked away the Monster side of Hulk, and is operating as a Hulk-Hero with brains.
And that'll last. Until it doesn't...

description

The gist is that monsters are rampaging all over the place, and Hulk has been capturing and shrinking them, so he can...store them or something. Then some redheaded monster collector from outer space sorta seduces convinces Amadeus that he should turn the mini monsters over to her.

description

Stuff Happens. The End.
The flashbacks of how it all went down with Banner are the highlights here, and not so much the main storyline. But I will say that Cho is adorable, and the back and forth with his sister was super cute. So, while the main story didn't intrigue me, the dialogue and mysterious origin stuff did.

description

Bottom line? This didn't stink. I've always liked it when Amadeus showed up in a comic, so that helped grease the wheel of acceptance for me. And since Cho has always been such a huge Hulk fanboy he does seem to be one of the more logical choices to take his place in a (hopefully) short-term setting. If you've been on the fence, give it a shot.

Amadeus Cho is the Totally Awesome Hulk who’s also totally in control when he’s the big green giant - but what happened to Bruce Banner? Also an alien monster collector called Lady Hellbender wants to add Hulk to her collection while Enchantress wants to enlist Hulk to fight for her in the War of the Realms storyline currently playing out in Jason Aaron’s Thor.

Greg Pak, probably the best known Hulk writer of the modern era having written Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, returns to the character once more and his Totally Awesome Hulk is… just ok. It does feel a bit contrived as Marvel have a big diversification push going on at the moment and Cho has replaced Banner as Hulk only because he’s Korean.

The storylines themselves aren’t that interesting. Hulk punches tons of kaiju for most of the book, he fights magic monsters, and tangles with Fin Fang Foom. Meh. Frank Cho and Mike Choi’s art makes it all look great though. And the flashbacks explaining how Banner stepped out of the picture and Cho became the Hulk were kinda interesting.

Pak’s kept the talking robo drone sidekick from Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk run which is cool - a good idea is a good idea - with Amadeus’ sister Maddy controlling the drone. They’re both geniuses because it’s Marvel and practically everyone in a Marvel comic is a genius.

The first volume of The Totally Awesome Hulk is a good-looking one if not the most enthralling read. It’s a halfway-awesome comic!

From the get go, it's made apparent that this is 'absolutely 100% not Bruce Banner', and it tries hard to constantly remind you of that. This attempt at differentiating itself from the original might be the biggest problem with this book due to the fact that the side characters are far more interesting than the protagonist. Amadeus is bland, overly flirtatious and a tad too cocky for me; that's without comparing him to his predecessor, Bruce Banner who is an overall better character. On a positive note, I suppose the only way is up when it comes to character development.

The story was okay. But I do love Cho, he's awesome.

So this is much more upbeat and fun then what you expect from most Hulk titled comics. The fights are still epic level of huge monsters, earthquake like attacks, and badass moments. However the rest is filled with comedy that actually works (mostly thanks to Cho/Miles) and this is the first ongoing Hulk title I'll probably keep up.

The story itself is okay. Some Pokemon catching them all creatures if you can type story. It has a lame villain but it works well enough to introduce us. The backstory seems okay when you learn how he became Hulk but it's predictable.

Overall it's a fun, entertaining, little title. Nothing more or less. However, I will continue just cause I was smiling most of the way through.

The series was OK. I like Amadeus Cho as Amadeus Cho, boy genius. He doesn't need to be "the strongest one there is" too. He's written here as being very arrogant and way too bro-tastic. Having Frank Cho come in and draw Hulk fighting Kaiju was a great idea. It's definitely playing to his strengths. The series had it's moments and great art, but hopefully Pak will write Amadeus to make him less unbearable in the future.

I wanted to like this more than I did but unfortunately, Amadeus appears to be the only one of the relaunched ANAD heroes I'm just not fond of.

Okay, so I'll start with what I like about this series.

Pros:
I loved Maddy and She Hulk in this book! Maddy was brilliant, protective and funny. I would be interested in reading more of her in another series. Like perhaps I get my dream team and Marvel puts together a team of badass female scientists with Valeria Richards, Lunella Lafayette, Maddy Cho, Riri and Lila Rhodes. Jennifer Walters is usually hit or miss with me but I adored her in this book. As much as Frank Cho is a total asshole, I thought he did a fine job drawing her here.

I liked the cameo from Tony and T'Challa to an extent. I'll get to what I didn't like about that later.

I also liked the metaphor of the Hulk in Cho's trunk being his struggle to keep the Hulk reigned in. I thought that was pretty cool.

That's all I enjoyed about this book.

Cons:
I don't like Amadeus. I didn't like him when he showed up in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur when he told Lunella she shouldn't worry about being different. Like, that's all well and good for you because you can turn your ability off, you condescending jerk. I didn't really like him here, either. I see him as the Johnny Bravo of science.

I couldn't quite put my finger on what bugged me about him for a while. It couldn't just be straight up arrogance because some of my favorite characters can be incredibly arrogant: Tony Stark, Lunella, Damian Wayne. So, it wasn't just the arrogance.

I thought maybe it was the fact that he paused fighting crime to hit on girls he was supposed to be saving. It was kinda annoying but not a complete deal breaker.

Or maybe it was the fact that he belittled Tony for wanting to send Hulk to the negative zone when it literally looked like there was no other option to keep everyone safe. Tony Stark loves Bruce Banner. Even Bendis' warped CW II event grasped that. Bruce has been one of his best friends for decades! He always evaluates every option before settling on sending his friend away and I'm getting really tired of characters acting like he's a bad friend. Here and in the events leading up to Civil War, Tony did everything he could to avoid sending Bruce away and in both cases, he didn't make the decision without running it by someone else. Stop using that against him.

Maybe it's because for a genius, there was a level of stupidity in the way Cho fought monsters here. Twice we get this sequence: Chulkie takes on a monster. It seems as though he just knocked it out. Chulkie brags to his sister. Monster wakes up and nearly takes Chulkie down leading to more destruction. Twice! It's not funny if it happens again. It just makes him look bad at his job.

You know what? It's all of these things. I didn't care to find out more about him. I found him moderately annoying. It was arrogance without charm. It was a lead male character surrounded by female characters I was much more interested in. I just.. don't care to see more of him. I considered reading Champions because I love Kamala but I don't know now.

Side note: this was the weakest version of Miles that I've ever read. He didn't seem like himself at all. It was strange. It was like Pak didn't know how to write him so he just watered down some Peter Parker dialogue.

So, in conclusion, I didn't like the main character and that seriously lessened my ability to enjoy this book. I'm glad some people enjoyed it but I think I'll give the rest of this series a skip.

Wow this was a fun read!

Amadeus is the hulk now and we see how it happened 4 months ago and where Bruce is sort of is hinted here but in the present its mostly him and his sister Maddy trying to stop monsters from attacking and then enter Lady Hellbender and her monster and how Amadeus deals with that and also a fun fight with Fin-fang-foom and some inner conflict of hulk and amadeus and that was fun plus what happens when Enchatress comes in and tries to control the Hulk and how does Amadeus and his sister battle that is the next story!

So yeah a lot of fun and its filled with action since its Pak and I love the way the whole thing with Bruce is revealed and the cameos by She-hulk and Jane thor are quite fun and shows the changed state of the Marvel universe then and how he comes into conflict with them but slowly they accept him too and I love the way Amadeus reconciles with the hulk inside him and the tragedies he faced. Its filled with smashing and thrills and also a lot of deep character points and really well written and drawn! I am excited to read the rest of the series!

I'll be honest; when I first heard (on the Internet, of course, as it is virtually impossible to avoid spoilers these days) that Amadeus Cho was going to be the new Hulk after Secret Wars I was disappointed. Greg Pak has finally manoeuvred his ultimate Mary Sue character into the primo spot in the Hulk world. Not only is Cho smarter than everyone else, he's now stronger than everyone else too. 'Tis to sigh.

I read the book with low, low, low expectations and, wonder of wonders, actually found myself enjoying it despite myself. It was a fun little story with great artwork from Frank Cho and guest starred two of my favourite characters, Jennifer Walters and Miles Morales. (I do find it a little annoying that I have to refer to these characters by their real names as there are multiple characters using their superhero names these days.)

This book was fun, action-packed and funny. It wasn't amazingly good or anything but it was an enjoyable read. Colour me surprised. I still miss Banner, though.

The Totally Awesome Hulk? More like 'totally awesome book!'

Among the household-name superheroes I have never given Hulk a lot of attention. That may change after reading Vol. 1: Cho Time. Having a nineteen year-old super-genius (who is clearly still in the throes of lingering adolescence) taking over for Bruce Banner, with "mission control" assistance from his equally-smart younger sister (in the form of robo-drone 'Kegger'), was inspired fun as was the zippy, bickering banter. It's not really an origin story, but it moves at a face pace - I mean, the action starts on the fifth panel of the first page! This is not your father's Incredible Hulk, but that's okay with me.

[Read as single issues]

Greg Pak will probably go down in history alongside Peter David as the best modern day Hulk writer. Many have tried to follow him, but even the brilliant Mark Waid doesn't seem to get these characters the way Pak does. So of course, with a Pak-created character like Amadeus Cho becoming the new Hulk, having Pak come back makes total sense.

Pak's take on Cho has always been definitive, and the addition of his sister Maddy brings some hilarity to the proceedings too. How Amadeus tackles the problems that the Hulk usually takes on is interesting, especially since he's usually a more intellectual character rather than the punching people type.

The first storyline is a little silly, with an alien queen trying to capture a horde of monsters, but it gives Frank Cho free rein to draw all the things he's good at, whilst the second brings the Enchantress in for Amadeus to deal with, and bring his control over the Hulk persona into focus. Plus Thor's in it, which is always good. Mike Choi draws this second arc which isn't quite as good as Frank Cho's visuals, but they're still bright and fun, which is exactly what this series is.

Hulk has been a bit dim and dreary for a while, and whilst Bruce Banner is nowhere in sight, this is still the best the Hulk has been in a long time too.

I'm going to try very hard to ignore the fact that this is yet another classic character that now has a doppleganger and evaluate the book on it's own.

This is obviously a younger, hipper(?) Hulk whose main goal is to be a Hulk that everyone likes and never loses control. Over the course of this trade you learn just how he obtained the Hulk, understand his goal, and learn that he may not have as much control as he thinks. I've never really read any stories with Amadeus and Pak makes it clear that Amadeus has tremendous respect and caring for Bruce Banner, which was a nice touch. You will also get to know his sister and view their relationship.

Overall, you this is meant to be a fun, fast-paced Hulk story which is totally opposite of the slower, depressing stories of Bruce Banner. It's filled with things like "Cool!" and "Awesome!" sure to make it a hit with the newest Marvel Zombies.

The art by Frank Cho fits the bill. He's always been able to draw huge characters and lots of action really well. Not sure how long he plans on staying on the book (this is probably it), but his work certainly helped create the tone of this series.

It's not for me, but probably is a lot more entertaining for the newer readers.

What are you made of, Hulk?

It’s my first time reading Amadeus Cho AKA The Totally Awesome Hulk, who is Korean. #Equality I liked the hi-tech lingo, but... even Iron Man is part of story.I’ll definitely read the next volumes!

It's Cho Time! Best freaking Chulk ever! Ok, ok, I've been a fan of Amadeus Cho ever since his first appearance (recently reprinted in Amadeus Cho: Genius At Work) and have followed him from Hulk to Hercules and now ... it's Cho Time! Oh wait, been there done that.
Great character, fun art and an imaginative and long needed reworking of the Hulk concept. Frell, this is actually such a fun book. It's great to have someone who just loves being the Hulk and can control himself, and hasn't lost his intellect (well, at least not all of it). Greg Pak has been doing some stellar work with the Hulk character for years and this bold, inventive take on the character is refreshing and really revitalizes the concept. This is a 21st century Hulk and while it isn't a perfect home run, but it's easily worth three bases. It might take awhile for the new concept to get all the wrinkles ironed out, but it's already up and running, and watching it develop is half the fun.

Must say the artwork was a bit cartoony in this one.The Totally Awesome Hulk isnt the Hulk i grew up with but im sure i could get used to him.The angle of his sister being his partner in crime really didnt do it for me.Seeing the female Thor plus She-Hulk and Spidey was cool as was Lady Hellbender. Not something i would collect but i will check out the next volume in hopes it picks up.

A tad melodramatic at times, and I’m not sure why the plot is propelled by “an alien lady landing on earth with ulterior motives involving Amadeus” like, 3 separate times. That being said, the art is pretty easy on the eyes and the plot is structured to flow at a reasonable pace, so it’s not too bad.

I've never read any Hulk and only vaguely know of Amadeus Cho, but an Asian American lead with a AsAm team caught my interest enough to give this a go.

A lot of it is pretty standard--Cho mostly comes off as a stereotypical impulsive distracted-by-sex argues-with-sister teenage boy with only a few moments of something different. He fumbles around with power and responsibility he's not used to, punches lots of things, and generally thinks being Hulk is totally awesome. Nothing groundbreaking going on story-wise. It looks like it's building up to the more serious side of things in the next arc, which might catch my interest more.

The art is expressive, dynamic, and shows all the good things standard comics style has when it's done right. It occasionally veered a little cheesecake but nothing too egregious. Loved the Hulk facial expressions and variety of monsters.

I was a HUGE fan of Pak earlier run on Hulk so I've anxiously awaiting this return. I was also delighted to hear that Amadeus Cho was to be the new Hulk. He was a fun side-kick for both Hulk and Hercules. So of course I had piled on to this simple little book completely unreasonable expectations... and I was disappointed with what the book had to offer.

If you're looking for a dumbed down new Hulk doing a monster fight with pretty pictures by Cho for a few issues. Then this book is okay. The backup story is even slighter. Then we're treated to an early (1st?) appearance of Amadeus. Perhaps it will get better. Not holding my breath though. There's not much of a hook in the title other than an uncomfortable one about teen horniness replacing Banner's rage.

Korean-American teen genius Amadeus Cho gets his turn with the gamma powers, because diversification and also because the rest of Banner's supporting cast had already had a go. The central Hulk as puberty metaphor is inspired (because it is a time when even the smartest guy in the room, or the seventh smartest guy on Earth*, will start acting like a tool around attractive women, or finding his temper hard to keep in hand), and beyond the pleasing coincidence of names Frank Cho's art gives it all an appropriately hormonal vibe without ever tipping over into sleaze. But too many of the cast seem to have sketchy motivations or characterisations, or, in the case of Miles Morales, never to have their presence explained at all.

*Hank Pym says eighth. So it's definitely seventh.

mmm I mean, look, I'm super glad in terms of representation that there's a new Asian-American Hulk, and theoretically it's interesting to have a Hulk who's super enthused to be Hulk and can more or less control his Hulk powers. But it turns out I'm kind of ride or die for sadsack Bruce Banner so this book wasn't really for me.

Also like, I get it, he's a horny teenage boy, but I'm not so like I was like calm down Amadeus, we get that you have a crush on every girl. Not necessarily a flaw though, I think that would be more relateable/less annoying for this book's target teen audience.

I did love Amadeus's eye-rolling sister though--my personal stand-in ;)

I prob won't read any more of this series but I'm sure it has its audience.

Totally awesome!!!!

I picked this book up off of Amazon Prime on an impulse. The Incredible Hulk has always been my favorite comic book character. This looked like a fresh look at an old Marvel institution so I had to take a look and wasn't disappointed. I love the concept of AmadeusCho as the new hulk and his braniac sister as the one who gives him advice and acts as the leader of the duo. This book has great art, fun story ideas, a good sense of humor. I also enjoyed the appearances of Iron Man, Black Panther, Thor and Spider Man. I was sorry to see that this comic series didn't last long, I think it could make a great cartoon.

Before I get to the bad, let me start with the good: I really like the new take on the Hulk. I very much enjoy the direction they're taking it. I think the main focus of the series will be the struggle of being better than Banner, and keeping the Hulk in check. I think Cho is an excellent character and well deserving of the title "Totally Awesome".

With that said, I think with this book in particular, there are some flaws. First and foremost, the campy, keeping-up-with-the-kids lingo that Marvel is known for. It's pretty bad in this one. Not unreadable, but definitely a bit cringey. Another issue I faced was there are plenty of occasions where so much time is skipped between panels that I can't figure out what happened in between (for instance shot 1: he's on a ship on the ground, shot 2: he's off the ship, on the ground, the ship is in the air, and he's jumping after it...?). Again, not unreadable, but it definitely took me out of the story.

Overall, a fantastic read. I'm excited to see where this series goes. If these flaws were fixed, it would definitely be a 5/5.

Really good opening comic on newer, more Asian Hulk (Chulk). I read the wiki on Amadeus Cho’s history and it’s dang long. The little flashbacks it gave during the comic on how he got Hulk’s powers were good too, and feed further into my Iron Man dislike.

But Hulk is always this fascinating hero to me that’s caught between two worlds very literally. When Amadeus finally saves Bruce from it, all Bruce can do is cry because he knows the Hulk is a curse and can’t, probably never will be, fully controllable.

It wasn't totally awesome, but it was pretty dang cool. This is your fun, colorful, zany kind of comic. It's not too silly, though. Amadeus is the new Hulk, and he seems like a bit of a chuckle-head, considering he's supposed to be one of the smartest people on the planet. He's kind of a young horn-dog. Frank Cho can really deliver as a comic book artist, and I think that's what makes this pretty close to "totally awesome."

This is a fun lark of a book, not too heavy, but still evoking a smidgen of that ol’ Hulk angst. I do like how Pak has leaned into the hubris of genius and the brash overconfidence of youth to give a new spin on the usual “man or monster” tale we get from Hulk stories.
