Centuries after the legendary Basil Castellan's doomed struggle against the New Humans, the Empire is once again in deadly peril, and its only hope lies in a trio of mysterious heroes bearing a startling resemblance to Basil Castellan and his mythic companions. Original.
Born in 1948. Steve White is an American science fiction author best known as the co-author of the Starfire-series alongside David Weber.

My expectations may have been a little too high after the surprising quality of the Prince of Sunset, but I still think this one wasn't quite as good. I'd prefer to give it 3.5 stars.
The first third is the best, as all the protagonists develop, and the three are drawn together and identified. The plot is not as continuous in action as the first, certainly in part because it covers only a few years instead of decades. It still mostly avoids needless dialogue and development, although overall it fell a little short on my personal Action Meter. While I did figure out what had to happen by the last quarter of the book, again it never lost my interest. And the end was both bittersweet and redemptive.

This book is the sequel to "Prince of Sunset" which I read just before reading this book. I didn't really like it and didn't give it a very good review. I almost didn't read this book but decided to because I have read several books by Steve White and really enjoyed them. I am very glad that I decided to read it. This book is top notch Space Opera like I have come to expect from Steve White. Also even though this is a sequel it could be read alone and still be an understandable story. I recommend this book to all fans of Steve White and/or Space Opera.
A good, old fashion space opera ! I disliked when the author cut away from and did not describe some of the space battles being that I am a military scifi fan ! Overall a entertaining read ! Nothing special !
