Sir Henry Merrivale (better known to the public, and to his co-workers of the Military Intelligence Department as "H.M.") had disappeared. I keep trying John Dickson Carr’s books in the hope of being converted. As ever, this one failed to do that but I must admit, I enjoyed it (a little) more than most.
Partly that may be because the characters- and particularly the narrator - are more endearing than in many of his works. I quite enjoyed the fact that it was set over 24 hours between London, Torquay and Bristol (then back to London) with the narrator responding to a summoning from Merivale and working against time with his wedding the next morning. As with so much in this book that is completely and utterly implausible, but the pace somewhat masks the logical leaps, bonkers decision making and coincidences along with the generally confusing complexity.
While the first 75% I could feign some level of enjoyment, I absolutely hated the denouement. Like so many JDC books he plays games with the reader. It’s frankly irritating. I don’t really care who the other characters think the killer to be, and I don’t need 50 pages of explanation.
All the JDC books I’ve read are longwinded, pompous and written as no human speaks. They’re painfully ‘American trying to be Brit’ (this one almost touched on American Noir) but this did have a few redeeming features. Not convinced JDC will ever be for me though.

This mystery began with a lot of promise but is let down by such a drawn out conclusion that I no longer cared what had actually happened and just wanted it to be over.

This was really an unexpectedly great Carr. It was also my last selection from H.M.'s series of "Something Something Murders", which have some of Carr's best impossibilities, plotting, and solutions, all while maintaining the subtle humor which Carr was so great at before it devolved into slapstick. However, TP&JM is nothing like its five compatriots - not even its fellow spy-thriller The Unicorn Murders. There is much more humor throughout (and good situational humor at that!), the end-of-chapter plot twists are solid and untiring, and the impossibility (an astral projection problem) happens halfway through a series of comic misadventures and is answered within four pages. On top of that, the plotting is in a way reversed - we start with all of the development and hi-jinks, and then draw back to the usual hustle-and-bustle of suspect questioning and clue analysis. The most surprising part of all this is that, in my opinion, these strange differences between TP&JM make it the best of H.M.'s original sextet. I was engrossed through the entire story, from Ken Blake's original conscription into spying by H.M., through the murder of Paul Hogenauer, and until the amazing climax involving the false solutions provided by the detective team we have gotten to know, including H.M., his former coworker Colonel Charters, and Ken's fiancee Evelyn Cheyne. I laughed, I gasped, I puzzled, and I finished the book satisfied. I couldn't take my mind off it whenever I didn't have the book around - which may have been a bit too much time, because I was eventually able to sleuth out the killer. This, however, is not a flaw of the books, and more a consequence of my ever-increasing familiarity with culprit-hiding. This is one of Carr's greatest denouements, and the extra twist he adds in which he uses in a couple of other books (I can't mention what it is due to spoilers) feels for once justified. The final page is a cherry on top, consummating the careful plotting, detailing, and cluing which Carr has deftly and artfully crafted in these 221 too-brief pages. You may not want to read this as your first H.M., since it's so different from the others, but once you've gotten to know the Old Man I enthusiastically recommend this masterpiece. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Another JDC that doesn’t hit the mark for me. Maybe it was an experiment or a risk that didn’t pay off, as Merrivale mentions that they’re working backwards from a typical whodunit. Frustrating read and one of the only books I’ve ever skimmed: three-quarters in, the circular telling and re-telling of the facts thus far wore my eyes out and I stopped caring. I can see a good story in here somewhere, especially with that button-cute ending, but it doesn’t come off. Dud.

This one was really bad. Very poorly written. And really, there's no mystery, at least not the usual how-done-it that Carr built his reputation on. It's just one long silly misadventure after another, with the criminal getting away... Freida McFadden would have found that inspiring!

"Delitto da burattini" è uno dei romanzi con H.M. incentrati su azioni avventurose e sul bizzarro (come "I delitti dell'unicorno"). Il protagonista assoluto è Ken Blake (come nell'altro libro), che affronta mille peripezie in una sola notte. H.M. appare invece molto defilato dalla scena, comparendo solamente all'inizio e alla fine. Per quanto riguarda il meccanismo giallo, Carr si rivela ancora un maestro: prevale infatti qui il bizzarro, l'incongruenza, che vengono spiegate in modo semplice. Il caos di indizi, bizzarrie e personaggi ambigui nascondono abilmente una realtà molto evidente e semplice.
RILETTURA
I giovani Kenwood Blake e Evelyn Cheyne sono pronti per sposarsi. È passato più di un anno dallo straordinario e bizzarro caso che li ha portati a conoscersi e a innamorarsi l'uno dell'altra (raccontato ne "I delitti dell'unicorno), sono felici e tutto è pronto l'indomani per l'evento tanto agognato.
Ma si sa, la vita non va mai come ci si aspetta: il giorno precedente Ken riceve un misterioso telegramma da H.M., burbero investigatore nonché capo del Ministero della Guerra britannico, che chiede il suo aiuto. Deve recarsi subito a Torquay dove, come nei vecchi tempi, deve tornare ad assumere sembianze fittizie per una delicata missione spionistica. Il protagonista è ragionevolmente irritato ma, speranzoso di poter sbrigare la faccenda in tempo per il matrimonio, accetta l'incarico.
H.M. lo conduce a casa del capo della polizia Martin Charters e gli spiega il motivo per cui ha richiesto i suoi servigi: Paul Hogenauer, personaggio ambiguo che già in passato era stato sotto il mirino dell'Intelligence inglese per spionaggio, è tornato nel paese e si è stabilito lì vicino dopo che nell'ultima guerra, scusandosi per lettera con la sua consueta premura presso il governo inglese, aveva deciso di tornare in patria sentendosi obbligato moralmente a servire la sua Germania. Il fatto di per sé non ha nulla di strano, la guerra è ormai conclusa e parlare di spie è inutile. Il problema nasce dal fatto che pochi giorni prima lo stesso Hogenauer si era presentato a casa di Charters chiedendo a lui denaro per alcuni suoi strampalati esperimenti parascientifici in cambio della rivelazione della vera identità di L., personaggio fumoso che aveva messo in difficoltà non poche nazioni durante il conflitto vendendo segreti di Stato al miglior offerente, una sorta di mercenario di informazioni top secret. Allarmato dal fatto che conoscesse L. e avvertendo che stava avvenendo qualcosa di losco, come sembrava dimostrare il fatto che Hogenauer si chiudesse molte sere in un salotto dove un poliziotto, mandato da Charters per sorvegliare la situazione, affermava di aver visto nella stanza "lampi di luce intorno ad un oggetto simile a un vaso da fiori capovolto", Charters ha chiamato dunque H.M.
Dal momento che si teme che L. sia anch'egli nel Paese, Ken deve entrare a casa di Hogenauer e scoprire cosa sta tramando. Naturalmente utilizzando attrezzi da scassinatore. Ken è incerto ma dal momento che gli assicurano che il proprietario è fuori città, si traveste e parte per la sua rischiosa mansione.
Il protagonista però neanche immagina cosa lo aspetterà nelle prossime ore: quasi come se il fato ce l'avesse con lui, prima viene arrestato su ordine dello stesso H.M. per furto di auto; poi, riuscito a scappare dalla stazione di polizia, riesce ad entrare nella casa di Hogenauer per portare a termine la missione. Ma qui s'imbatte nel cadavere dello stesso Hogenauer, proprio in quella stanza dove accadevano cose bizzarre. La situazione attuale poi non lo era da meno: la vittima giace avvelenata dalla stricnina su una poltrona, con un fez sul capo, nella camera immersa in un buio pesto eccetto per una piccola penna-torcia che punta il suo raggio verso un punto vuoto di una libreria da cui sono stati tolti dei volumi sull'aeronautica. Inoltre sul ripiano della scrivania giacciono quattro paia di gemelli da polsino legati tra di loro.
Cosa vuol dire tutto ciò?
Le avventure ( o meglio sventure) di Ken non finiscono qui: dovrà vedersela con altri fatti che farebbero ammattire anche la persona più razionale, come donne che sbucano all'improvviso sui luoghi del delitto, banconote false riposte nei posti più strani, un altro omicidio che pare la copia del primo, reverendi falsi e ecclesiastici fin troppo veri e travestimenti a non finire.
Alla fine rimane quasi l'impressione di aver assistito ad una sorta di commedia degli equivoci se non fosse che la vicenda è attraversata sottilmente da un alone macabro e grottesco.
H.M. riuscirà ancora una volta a cavare un senso a questo enorme ammasso di incongruenze, svelando una verità che stava sotto il nostro naso per tutto il tempo. Non si può nell'epilogo non chiedersi come ci si è lasciata sfuggire la soluzione, ma qui più che altrove questa è talmente ben mascherata dalla piega "thriller" che prende la trama che quasi si dimentica di star leggendo un giallo classico. Naturalmente ci sarà anche la risposta al quesito: riusciranno Ken e Evelyn ad arrivare in orario al loro matrimonio?
Carr dimostra in quest'opera la sua maestria nel costruire una trama complessa, piena di eventi che si concatenano tra loro, di elementi bizzarri e ambigui e personaggi altrettanto evanescenti. Un giallo atipico del Maestro che mescola il romanzo d'avventura ottocentesco, la spy story ed il giallo classico. D'altronde anche il titolo originale dell'opera, "The Punch and Judy Murders", ricollegandosi al tema della mascherata, mette in luce l'aspetto farsesco, da commedia dell'equivoco del racconto. Infatti come in quest'ultima domina il tema del "sovvertimento", anche qui notiamo una trama capovolta rispetto ai canoni del genere: non è l'azione che segue la scoperta del delitto e la relativa indagine ma l'esatto opposto. Invertiti sono anche i ruoli dei personaggi stessi, in cui coloro che operano per svelare la verità vengono perseguitati alla stregua di criminali e coloro che celano segreti insondati rimangono illesi all'interno del loro (apparente) sicuro silenzio. Tutto il romanzo s'impernia su un totale stravolgimento dell'ordine, sia a livello strutturale che contenutistico, e non poteva che concludersi in sintonia con tali linee guida. Ma lascio al lettore il piacere della scoperta.
Al tema dello "stravolgimento" si lega poi il topos letterario del doppio: doppie sono le interpretazioni dei fatti, così come doppi sono i delitti (che si assomigliano in maniera incredibile), le identità fittizie del protagonista che passa da Perfetto Ladro a Perfetto Poliziotto, come quella di tanti altri personaggi che popolano queste convulse pagine.
A capo di tutto, quasi a muovere i fili di questi "burattini" c'è lui, Sir Henry Merrivale, che dà inizio e fine alla faccenda, vero deus ex machina della situazione. È lui che coinvolge il protagonista in questi intrighi infernali e sarà sempre lui a cavarlo d'impiccio e a risolvere tutti i problemi. Innegabile è infatti la dimensione teatrale della vicenda, con un H.M. nei panni del regista. E come ogni dramma che si rispetti il finale non può che comunicare un certo messaggio, per quanto le opere carriane siano scevre di interpretazioni ideologiche: si nota dopotutto un gran senso di amarezza legato ad una vita che spesso non soddisfa.
Ma questo sarebbe vedere oltre le righe e cercare forse un'esegesi in realtà improbabile e non voluta dall'autore.
Credo però che ogni lettore trovi nelle pagine un senso che magari non è quello inteso dall'opera, ma il riflesso del proprio sentire nella vicenda.

I haven't read a Sir Henry Merrivale mystery in over two decades, and I had forgotten how good these mysteries could be! Having finally found a used copy of this one at a reasonable price I jumped on it, and I was not disappointed. Carter Dickson (AKA John Dickson Carr) doesn't waste much time on character development or scenery, because he doesn't need to. In this book the plot IS character, and the intricacies of the mystery define the major players and move the story along so quickly that you don't have time for anything else. The one exception to this is "The Old Man" himself, Sir Henry Merrivale. You couldn't ask for a more cantankerous and hilarious detective. Modern readers might be put off by his occasional reference to a female character as "wench," but that is much less offensive than language I've found in other mysteries from this era. If you can find it used, find it in the library, or if the powers-that-be come to their senses and republish the exploits of "Old H.M.," then you should definitely pick up a copy.

This novel is a direct sequel to The Unicorn Murders and features many of the same characters. Given that I generally wasn't too enthused about Unicorn Murders, it should come as no surprise that I was equally unimpressed with this later entry. It can only loosely be described as a "crime" novel and more accurately falls into the category of "adventure" novel or perhaps comic farce. The farce elements are so strong that at times, I found myself wondering when Brian Rix would make an appearance (he didn't). As a comedy, it doesn't really work as it is simply not funny enough while the adventure was just not adventurous enough for me. The convoluted tale involves counterfeiting; international spies; poisoning; a chap who disguises himself as a police officer and a vicar; a mad scientist and lots more. One of the weaker British Library of Crime Classics.

February 2, 2022I enjoyed this one. It really has the flavor of a 1930s mystery film with its obligatory romance, humor and suspense. I adore Carr's grumpy detectives (here Henry Merrivale) and his locked room mysteries which are almost always double in some way and yet I still fail to solve them. Here two very similar deaths miles apart have two different causes and nonetheless I didn't figure either out. This is the third Ken Blake novel, so those that mention lack of character development may just need to read the earlier The Plague Court Murders and the Unicorn Murders. The suspects are a bit formulaic, but the puzzles here are first rate!

How truly brilliant is this book?
A direct sequel to its predecessor “The Unicorn Murders” this picks up in tone where that left off. Part mystery, part thriller, part caper, the whole thing is a blisteringly paces read from start to finish.
Though it lack’s Carr/Dickson’s trademark “Impossible crime” element, being more of a straight whodunnit, it more than makes up for that with colourful characters, hilarious set pieces and genuine surprises in its twists.
Highly recommended.

I think Carr actually manages to pull of the both the humor and tension in this one, and I often find him lacking when he attempts either. The plot is complex and the solution is surprising. Probably not up to the standards of Carr's very best solutions.

This is my fifth Henry Merrivale mystery and I've come to the conclusion that HM is not for me. I don't care about him, or his hat, or his elaborate explanations of improbable crimes.

Pretty good Merrivale mystery combining paranormal cum psychic locked room murder(s) with macabre elements and a fair amount of screwball comedy. The only thing which stops it from being a superlative mystery is the solution to the problem, which is too simplistic and lacks ingenuity we have come to associate with the author. Also, I found the culprit to be easily identifiable, which further spoiled the suspense. The plot similar to the previous entry in the series, in that it involves hijinks regarding a hidden criminal mastermind and the secret agent couple from the same reprise their roles of point-of-view characters.(whom I genuinely find one of the better narrator characters used by Carr in his novels)
The plot begins when Merrivale summons our narrator on the eve of his wedding to West Country using a cryptic message for an overnight operation. The search involves housebreaking of weird German scientist who is a proponent of telepathy and suspected double agent. Inevitably it all culminates in a murder investigation. The story is very well paced allowing the reader to never feel bored. Also, it's equally well clued meticulously so that it effected the final reveal for me.
The character work except in the case of our narrator and detective was nothing to write home about. The atmosphere to although, successful in conveying suspense and eeriness of the story but the coastal setting is never fully explored. The comic element of the story were a highlight for me, especially the sequences where our narrator absconds from the police; the train sequence involving a Canadian parson; and the banter between Merrivale and his American pursuer. They were very well done and the slapstick element (that becomes a reason for criticism of the latter entries in the series) is quite under wrought.
The plot begins when Merrivale summons our narrator on the eve of his wedding to West Country using a cryptic message for an overnight operation. The search involves housebreaking of weird German scientist who is a proponent of telepathy and suspected double agent. Inevitably it all culminates in a murder investigation. The story is very well paced allowing the reader to never feel bored. Also, it's equally well clued meticulously so that it effected the final reveal for me.

Any philosophical soul, on the eve of his wedding, must suspect that some damned thing or other will go wrong. It is bound to. That is the cussedness of all human affairs.
Much more of a comedy than a mystery, and it's quite a funny comedy too, seeing Ken Blake getting caught up in a farcial misadventure. As a result, the mystery is placed somewhat on a backburner, and while the relevant reveals are fun enough, they're not Carr at his most exceptional. Amazing last line, however.

Fiendishly complex romp from Carr!This one features no impossible crimes and is more akin to Buchan's 39 Steps than Carr's usual locked room stories.It is full of secret agents in disguise,mysterious experiments and derring do.It is a real page turner and well worth a read.
