Whether it is the Bluegrass of Kentucky, the mountains of Montana, or Medieval England, Jan Scarbrough brings you home with romances from the heart.
The author of two popular Bluegrass romance series, Jan writes heartwarming contemporary stories about home and family, single moms and children, and if the plot allows, about another passion—horses. Living in the horse country of Kentucky makes it easy for Jan to add small town, Southern charm to her books and the excitement of a Bluegrass horse race or a competitive horse show.
The Ghost Mountain Ranch series is a contemporary western series with a good blend of mystery and happily-ever-after romance. The Dawsons of Montana is another four-book contemporary western series.
Jan leaves her contemporary voice behind with two paranormal gothic romances, Timeless and Tangled Memories, a Romance Writers of America (RWA) Golden Heart finalist. Her historical romance, My Lord Raven, is a medieval story of honor and betrayal.
Jan holds a M.A. in English from Western Kentucky University. A member of Novelist, Inc., Jan self-publishes her books.
MERCER: THE MONTANA McKENNAS (The Montana Ranchers, #5) by Jan Scarbrough is an overall enjoyable, short contemporary cowboy romance. Part of a series, each book is based on one of the blended family McKenna children, but they can also easily be read as a standalone without confusion.
Mercer McKenna is the youngest child and is always trying to be the peace maker in her blended family being the only child of both James and Liz McKenna. Everything in her world is changing. The death of her father has left everyone devastated, but has also brought everyone back home and face to face with their true loves. Mercer always had a childhood crush on her brother’s best friend, Drake and when he comes to the ranch to be Brody’s best man, Mercer is all grown up and feeling more than an adolescent crush. Mercer takes a chance on love, but Drake may not be ready.
Drake Hawkins is a professional bull rider on the downside of his career, but he doesn’t know anything else to do for the money he needs. He has a secret that could derail his chance for Mercer’s love and believes he is not ready for the responsibilities of a permanent home and relationship. Drake has some life changing decisions to make if he wants Mercer’s love.
Mercer’s story is another entertaining addition to this series. Even though each book is short, Ms. Scarbrough brings her characters and their emotions to life. The plot includes extended family dynamics, but the H/h are always the focus. The sex scenes are well written with mild heat. A solid contemporary cowboy family romance series. I’ll be looking forward to reading more in this series.

Another delightful contemporary western from this author! Sweet, sexy Mercer (daughter of James McKenna) and rough and ready Drake (bull rider who fights retirement and settling down) meet again after Mercer is all grown up…and the fireworks start. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, full of family caring and angst with the tough decision-making all family members face from time to time. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading to see what resolutions would be reached after the to and fro in Mercer McKenna’s life. Very enjoyable!
An unpublished copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Mercer had one objective , make her brother's wedding the very best that it could possibly be, he deserved it, his fiance' deserved it too. Now the only other thing that she had to keep in mind was to stay away from Drake, her brother's best friend, and the man that she'd had a crush on since she was fifteen years old. Easy, sure but how is she supposed to control her raging hormones every time she looks at him, after all, she was a full grown woman now..... and he realizes that the first time he sees her. Is this going to be a good thing, or maybe a change in everyone's possible future? This is a really good read, I enjoyed every page!!! Great Read!!!
Mercer admits she has loved Drake her brothers friend from age 15. She leaves with him but finds out he is living to her about something. She will not listen to him and goes home saying when you get your shirt together you know where I live. He shows up and tells her he loves her. Great book. Well written characters. Love this series.
One of Ms. Scarbrough's strong points is delicately weaving emotions into a story while keeping it from being drawn out. She does not disappoint in her latest addition to the Montana Ranchers series.
Here we are welcomed into the lives of Mercer and Drake. Mercer is the youngest sibling in the McKenna family we have gotten to know in earlier books. Drake happens to be a long term bull rider (cowboy!!) and the best friend of one of Mercer's older brothers. Mercer has had a crush on Drake from an early age when she would follow him and her brother around. Now he walks back into her life when he agrees to the best man at her brother's wedding.. and obviously notices that she has grown up into a delightfully beautiful and spirited young lady. I love stories of crushes coming to a happy ending, so I enjoyed this story quite a bit.
Note: If you have not already read the earlier books in the series, you can still enjoy this story! You may find yourself wanting to go back and read the others, but you won't feel lost or confused over previous characters or events at all.

I love Jan Scarbrough's books and I have been waiting on baby girl Mercer's book to come out it seems like forever! Mercer has held onto a crush on her brother's friend Drake since she was knee high to a grasshopper but seems like he never even noticed she was around. But now that he is back for Brody's wedding he notices she is not little anymore. She has grown up and out in all the right places and ways. Brody need to convince Mercer that he is hanging up his saddle and done with the rodeo and ready to settle down with her...but is he?
I highly recommend the entire collection of Montana Ranchers Books!
I've been enjoying the series so far. This one was good too except for the fact that in one part of the book, Margaret was Drake's brother's widowed wife and Luke was his nephew. Yet, later in the book, Margaret somehow became his aunt and Luke his cousin??? I got excited when details were kept the same from one book to the next, but in this one book details were different.... other than that, I've been enjoying the series....
Mercer is the good girl. Drake was the bad boy in everyone's eyes but he's actually a really good guy. And the author brought such a great portrait of him into this story. I really enjoyed reading the writing in this book describing this character.
