About the author

Mary Elizabeth Braddon was a British Victorian era popular novelist. She was an extremely prolific writer, producing some 75 novels with very inventive plots. The most famous one is her first novel, Lady Audley's Secret (1862), which won her recognition and fortune as well. The novel has been in print ever since, and has been dramatised and filmed several times.

Braddon also founded Belgravia Magazine (1866), which presented readers with serialized sensation novels, poems, travel narratives, and biographies, as well as essays on fashion, history, science. She also edited Temple Bar Magazine. Braddon's legacy is tied to the Sensation Fiction of the 1860s.

She is also the mother of novelist W.B. Maxwell.

Meh. Very little sense of terror and a frustratingly bland ending, where the villain suddenly changes her mind about the effectiveness of her treatments, because a bland Victorian guy who feels sorry for and wants to marry the lady's bland 18-year-old companion says so. You'd think a story that strives to be gothic would be at least a tad more exciting, but I guess not. Maybe if it was a little shorter with a more effective atmosphere or a full-length novel where Lady Ducayne was explored more (I actually kind of liked her character), but as it is Good Lady Ducayne isn't all that. Is it a vampire story? I realize that the treatment of vampires can vary a great deal, but is blood transfusion enough to categorize something as a vampire story? I'm not convinced (sounds more like a sensation novel), but I'm willing to reconsider.

I really enjoyed the set up and pacing of the story, but I felt that the ending was horribly anticlimactic. If not for the uneventful ending, I would have given this 4 stars, possibly even 5 if the villain was given more time to shine.

The antagonist here gave me Elizabeth Bathory vibes, an old woman that consumes the blood of beautiful young girls out of an obsession to keep her youth and immortality. I liked her, but her willingness to let go of the protagonist felt like too much of a happy fairy tale ending. She suddenly lost all sense of danger and scariness in the final chapter. I really wanted to see more from her...

This was a somewhat bland and slow read, but it was a nice twist from the typical Vampire plotline. Rating: 3/5 Stars

This book was okay. It was a short story I read for my Vampires in Lit and Film class, but it definitely wasn't really in my top choices so far. It was relatively average. The characters weren't exceptionally rounded, and the plot was very slow and lulled. I didn't feel any of the creepiness I was hoping to feel, but the mystery of the situation was nice. Definitely not edge of my seat, but enough that I felt compelled to finish for reasons other than class requirements. It was just very... "eh."

This is a rather wonderful gothic novella from 1862 in which Brandon conjures a rich gothic atmosphere by the power of suggestion; there is nothing of the supernatural as such here, any scare on the reader’s part being their own doing.. just the way I like it.

Bella is a paid companion, and struggling to get work in the agency she attends daily in hope of a position. She eventually gets lucky (or not..) with the titular Lady Ducayne, an old and withered woman who lives a solitary existence, apart from her staff, in an appropriate gothic mansion.
The interest in this story is in what doesn’t happen, rather than what does; there isn’t any violence or death, Bella thinks highly of her employee throughout, even after the events she is subject to, and there is even a happy ending. It could have been written by Brontë… but it’s a vampire story..isn’t it??

Online this story is referenced as a vampire horror story, however I read it as part of a sci-fi anthology. I definitely think reading it with a sci-fi mindset/background is better, as there really aren't any contemporary horror elements. The tale is about a young woman who travels to Italy employed by an old woman - however the young woman's health quickly begins to deteriorate. It was a quick and captivating read, albeit not very surprising. I really liked the narration and the setting, even if the main character is extraordinarily bland.

A girl on hard times, and with little skills to speak of, takes a job as a lady's companion. The Good Lady Ducayne will pay a hundred a year and take her to the South of France. It's a dream come true for Bella.

Wait... her name is BELLA?

The fact that the old woman seems interested only in her robust health, and the sickly demise of several of the previous companions matters naught to our heroine. She's just turned eighteen and seems remarkably naïve, [one article calls her dull and unimaginative] but off she goes with the frankly scary old woman.

The wretched Italian quack, Dr. Leopold Parravicini, Lady Ducayne's personal physician has given Bella a tonic to perk her up.

Thank goodness she made friends with some Scot siblings, one of whom had just finished his training as a doctor, and knows full well the 'mosquito bites' on Bella's arms are nothing of the sort. The crone even offers the new young doctor the price of a Harley Street surgery to maintain her regime. He's in love with the heroine and refuses.

And by the end of her little adventure, Bella has learnt absolutely nothing, nor has she realised how close she came to dying.

We can chat for hours about the literary metaphors of rich people using their wealth to prolong their own lives at the expense of others... vampires, in deed.

All of which fits rather neatly in the Gothic fiction box; helpless heroine, isolated from friends and family, foreign lands, science, and the scary use of blood transfusions.

And this was published a year BEFORE Dracula.

I love Mary Elizabeth Braddon. She has never let me down once! This novelette gets much better on a reread once you know where it’s going. I didn’t quite get why it was a vampire story at first, but now I 100% get it - and it’s a fascinating one in terms of the genre. The exploration of consent and predators robbing women of agency are fascinating, although of course Bella returns to her usual epic self by the end.

This is a vampiric medical detective story about a woman trying to stay alive through blood transfusions from young, healthy women. A young dashing doctor (the love interest - obviously) adopts the “detective” role to investigate why these girls are dying. And Lady Ducayne comes good in a surprise twist!

(I’m up for any gothic story with a protagonist called Bella.)

Yine bir dönüş yolunda bana eşlik eden kitap olarak, gidiş yolunda yaptığım gibi bir İthaki X eseri seçmek istedim. Bu seferki kitap, diğerine göre biraz daha kısaydı ama zaten bu seriden çıkan bütün kitaplar bu kıvamda olduğu için göze çarpıcı bir şey değildi bu. Mary Elizabeth Braddon da bu kısa hikayesi ile tanışmış olduğum bir yazar oldu ve açıkçası bu serideki en merak ettiğim kitaplardan biri buydu. İsmi çok daha korkutucu ve çekici göründüğü içindi bu muhtemelen ama kitabı okumadan da net bir yorum yapamıyoruz genel olarak zaten. Bu kitaba da bir otobüs yolculuğumda eve dönerken şans verdim ve okumaya başladım.

Burada biraz daha tıbbi ve realist şeylere girilmiş ve bu nokta kitabın bütün havasını bozmuş bence. Gerçekten potansiyele sahip ve akıcı bir şekilde başlayan bu öykünün sonunun bu şekilde bir şeye bağlanması beni hiç tatmin etmedi. hmm bin sehr zwiegespalten. geschrieben ist es mega, aber inhaltlich würd ich sagen stark angefangen und stark nachgelassen - bella als protagonistin hatte so viel charakter und witz und die Spannung wurde gut aufgebaut, aber die Auflösung war dann (für mich aus heutiger Sicht) bissl lame - also die lady redet einmal mit dem Arzt und ist dann so ja okay ich sehs ein ich werd nichtmehr böse sein, du kannst gehen bye bye? Wobei ihre eigentlichen taten nie wirkkich erklärt werden, also hätte gerne noch etwas mehr ins grauen reingehen können. aber am meisten hat mich eigentlich geärgert dass bella am ende den Arzt heiratet der ihr save wenig Fteiheiten gibt, wo sie doch am Anfang so schön über ehe gelästert hat. Aber an sich über die Autorin - bin wieder schockiert dass man nix von ihr kennt und sie ein weiteres Opfer des Männer Literaturkanons ist, wenn sie anscheinend eine DER bestsellerautorinnen im viktoroaniscjen england war. will auf jeden fall mehr vonn ihr lesen

Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s 1896 novella, ‘Good Lady Ducayne’ carries with it an aura of intense spookiness from the first sentence, spoken by Bella Rolleston, a very pert young woman, with few accomplishments, who required a job as companion to some rich, elderly and generous old lady. After a wait of several weeks, she gets to meet her employer, the Good Lady Ducayne of the title, and is shortly whisked off to Italy, far from family and friends. Lady Ducayne is very kind, doesn't overburden her with work, but she seems to sleep almost through the whole day. But then, of course, she is very old. She says once that she was born before Josephine was divorced. And then, Bella begins to dream…

A fun take on vampirism, dealing with the then controversial subject of bloodletting, with an oblique reference to the death of the Duke of Wellington. I never enjoyed a vampire story more, despite the shudders it gave me from the start.

Öncelikle yazarın hayatını ve başarılarını okuduğumda kitaba daha da bir beklentiyle başladım ve kısa bir öykü kitabı olarak da beklentimi tamamen karşıladığını belirtmek istiyorum. Kadın bir yazarın 1890’lı dönemlerin İngiltere’sinde korku türünün öncüsü olması ve Dracula eserinden bir yıl öncesinde içerisinde “vampir” terimi geçen ilk kitaplardan birini yazmış olmasını son derece takdir ettim.

Kitabımız Bella adındaki fakir kızın, refakatçi olarak iş araması ile başlıyor. Belirli uğraşların ardından Leydi Ducayne’in yanında işe başladığında ve onunla birlikte İtalya’ya gittiğinde sonunda fakirhanesinden kurtulduğu için biraz mutlu, son derece heyecanlı ancak biricik annesinden ayrıldığı için de kalbi kırık. Leydi Ducayne’in yanında geçirdiği ilk zamanlar yeni yerler keşfetmenin verdiği mutlulukla dolup taşan Bella, zamanla neşesini yitirerek solgun bir genç kıza dönüşüyor. Leydi Ducayne’in daha önce yanında çalıştırdığı refakatçilerine olduğu gibi gitgide solmaya ve hastalanmaya başlıyor.

Vampir terimi kitabın tek bir yerinde, mecazi bir anlatım içerisinde kinayeyle söylendi. Onun dışında ise kitabın sonunda Doktor Stafford’ın gizemi açığa çıkarmasıyla bu kısa fantastik öge son buldu. Ancak ben yazarın bu kısmı ucu açık bıraktığını ve esas gerçeğin ne olduğunu okuyucuya bırakmayı seçtiğini düşünüyorum. Ve bence her şey olabilirdi 😅

Kitabın türü korku. Yazar da bu türün öncülerinden kabul ediliyor. Dönemine göre de Bella’nın gördüğü rüyalar ve bazı durumlar korkunç sayılabilir. Fakat günümüz için pek korkutucu değil; yerine gayet keyifli bir eserdi. Bir saatte okuyabileceğiniz kafa dağıtmalık bir eser arıyorsanız bu kitap size göre 💜

Bram Stoker'in Dracula'sından önce yazılmış vampir mitinin öncülerinden densende bu kan aktarımı sayesinde hayatta tutunmaya çalışan muhterem Leydi Ducayne ve kendisi kadar çatlak doktoru hakkında kısa bir hikayeydi zavallım Bella'da ne çok sevdi muhterem Leydisini nerdeyse onun için ölecekti... Bu seriden okuduğum ikinci kitaptı tatilde seriyi bitirmeye karar verdim. Çoklu okuma yapmayı seviyorum Bir yandan Dickens ki bu kitapta da adı geçti bir yandan Jo Nesbo bakalım bu yıl 40 bin sayfayı okumuş olacak mıyım...

An interesting early portrayal of vampires, where the "vampire" in this situation is an old lady trying to live forever, and her doctor that is using progressive and unresearched medical experiments on young women servants to extend her life. Definitely an interesting early portrayal of a vampire, but one whose story isn't meaty enough for me to want more, which is not something a short story is going for.

Braddon rather messes up the climax, with a character making an unexpected decision, but her characters are interesting, and the women are no shrinking Victorian violets.

Das Ende kommt unerwartet schnell, ich habe noch sehr viele Fragen. Ist Lady Ducayne queer, ein Vampir? Warum hat sie so schnell ihre Meinung geändert? Was hat es mit dem Porträt auf sich? Man kann doch nicht ein queeres Porträt so geheimnisvoll einführen und dann nicht mehr darauf eingehen?
Ich möchte eigentlich 4 Sterne geben für das Gefühl von Italien, Freundschaft, Abenteuer und Freiheit. Aber den Rest der Handlung gibt es ja auch noch, also sind es 3.

Un racconto breve ma potentissimo, perfetto per chi ama il gotico d’autore, le atmosfere cupe e le eroine fragili ma determinate. Lady Ducayne si legge in poche ore, ma lascia un’eco inquieta che dura molto di più.
