This just Three adorable house cats are reporting the most hilarious breaking news! Based on author/illustrator Georgia Dunn’s real life pets, Elvis, Lupin, and Puck strap on neckties and pick up microphones to provide the most up-to-date relevant news stories (at least according to them).
Cats reporting on the news that matters to cats with stories such as The Vacuum Cleaner Is Back!, The Woman Is Cooking Bacon!, and The Ceiling Cats Are Everywhere Tonight! Cynical, no nonsense Elvis and shy, sweet, sensitive Puck are the reporter kitties in the field, while the adventurous jokester Lupin serves as anchor cat. Together they break headlines on the food bowl, new plants, mysterious red dots, strange cats in the yard, and all the daily happenings in their home.
My favorite comic strip “Breaking Cat News” has produced its first book! How exciting!
“The premise is simple,” says writer/cartoonist Georgia Dunn in her introduction: it is “cats reporting on the news that matters to cats.” And what kind of news is that? Well, anything that fascinates your cat—or, if you're like Georgia and me, your three cats—for minutes at a time: “7:30 on a Saturday and the food bowl is still empty,” ” “that cat is in the backyard again,” “there is a bee in the bathroom,” “the people moved the couch, revealing a trove of forgotten artifacts,” and “the man is sleeping on the couch,” etc., etc. All these topics are guaranteed to fix the attention of a feline, and consequently the attention of its owner—and this reader--as well.
But of course, as with other TV news programs, good stories only come to life when they are covered by intrepid, charismatic journalists, and BCN has three: white cat Lupin at the anchor desk, with shy black cat Puck and irascible (but sentimental) Siamese Elvis as the reporters—all equipped with (very cute) little “BCN” labeled microphones.
Although the focus is always on “the news that matters to cats,” we do discover something about the cats' people too. “The woman” and 'the man”--who Georgia Dunn admits look a lot like herself and her husband—pack up their belongings (“the People are building box forts”), drive a long distance with the BCN staff in separate carriers (“the People have gone insane”), and arrive at a new home (“a strange, unfamiliar world my fellow reporters refuse to explore”). Of course, our cat reporters eventually adjust to their new environment, only later to be confronted by a “strange new creature” (“the People call it a 'baby' and force it to wear tiny hats”).
The cartoon cats are adorable, but the behavior they exhibit is characteristically feline, and sharply observed. I believe anybody who likes cats will enjoy reading this book, and if—like me—you live with more than one cat, I bet you will also be continually smiling and nodding your head in recognition.
I loved this delightful illustrated book about three cat journalists on the CN (cat news) network who report news of interest to cats. The kitties - Lupin, Elvis, and Puck - are housecats that live with 'the woman' and 'the man.'
Elvis, Lupin, and Puck (left to right)
The book is filled with entertaining scenes, so I'll just give a few examples.
The woman goes to the bathroom and closes the door....and the cats immediately rush over with their microphones: "CN news, ma'am. What you doing in there?' The cattarazzi proceed to claw at the door and stick their paws underneath as they keep calling, "Ma'am?" "Ma'am?" "Ma'am?.....and the woman just sighs.
Seeing that the woman has a frosted cupcake the cats immediately swarm her. One asks "Do you remember when you let me lick frosting off your finger, ma'am?" Another inquires "Do you remember I'm an excellent boy who deserves frosting?" When the woman declares "Cupcakes are for people" the cats are appalled....but get smiley again when they discover 11 more cupcakes on the kitchen counter.
The woman is under the weather and lying on the sofa (spooning with Puck). A reporter cat observes: "People recover from illness with giant mugs of hot tea and hours of British mystery shows."
Later the woman is obviously pregnant and a newscat observes, "The woman has been increasing in size. This week her size has pinned her to the couch where she now lives with Puck watching British mystery shows." [Puck can't comment because if he misses the first ten minutes of the show he won't know what's going on....so true...ha ha ha.]
When the man and woman finally bring the baby home a cat reporter observes that "The people have brought home a strange creature that they force to wear tiny hats." The cats think the baby is a human pupa...and their labeled illustration of this is hilarious!
This book would appeal to everyone who likes a laugh, especially cat lovers. Highly recommended.
Adorable, funny and fun. I had never heard of this comic strip so I'm very grateful to have run into Georgia's proud mother, who has a lot to brag about. I had a great time reading the comics. They are written with the perfect amount of smart and silly humor. The personality of each cat is clear and as a trio they're scheming, charming and clever. Their reporting is a hilarious and wise window into how cats see our world. Boxes and showers and napping People and bacon are some of the things the intrepid reporter-cats cover on CN News. I only wish the book was longer; it's short for the price -- but still worth it. It's very entertaining and left me craving more.
The gods must be crazy, or, in this cat's eye view, it's the people who must be crazy.
This happy diversion came my way via Bill Kerwin's review. It's not a graphic novel, just a book of cat comic strips. But they do progress in a narrative of sorts, a little like loosely connected short stories. Usually I like the idea of cartoon collections better than the actuality; these, however, tickle the fancy and are eminently readable. I think it took me an hour--a very pleasant one.
The woman trying to use a laptop. The woman in the bathroom a room we can't get into. The time it was 7:31 AM on a Saturday morning, and the food bowl was still empty. The time the man had to get up early the next morning, requiring repeated--ongoing--coverage....
I have not had cats these ten years or more due to widespread cat allergy among the extended family. If I did acquire cats, my house would become a toxic site for many of my family. Choices must be made! Luckily the next-door neighbors have recently upgraded their cat menagerie. And the across-the-street neighbors have a pushy fat cat who condescended to pose with me in a recent photo although could not spare the time for me to get a good one. I also whiled away an hour going through a disk of 2000 or so scanned-in family photos to search out some shots of our dear departed kitties.
I have begun giving this little book as a gift....
Oh how I loved “Breaking Cat News.” I still have a smile on my face just thinking about it and am going to buy a physical copy the next time I am in a bookstore. Any cat lover is sure to see their own cats in the news team, and it will make a perfect gift for anyone in your life that needs some cheering up. It’s also appropriate for children and is sure to get everyone laughing together. Highly recommended!
This review is based upon a complimentary copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
A pretty funny book about seeing the world through a cat's perspective as the human world would seem to be constantly blowing up. This reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon about the cats of war, where we see three cats are curled up sleeping as a war ensues. In this one the "breaking news" (seen through the angle of three cats as tv reporters) is not climate change or the latest tweet announcing some outrage or horror but whatever is going on in the cat bowl, or out the window where we see birds and neighborhood cats.
A belated birthday present, which is my third favorite, after Early and On Time.
That was adorable. I have this problem with short form entertainments: it's hard for me to get interested in a single day's cartoon or a sitcom episode on its own. I prefer fat books and binging on an entire season of a show. So when my husband wants me to see something amusing on his computer it is pretty much a waste of my time.
Ah, but a year's worth of a cartoon is different: I can engage. And then the premise of Breaking Cat News amuses me, and I can get a feel for personalities and such. I had never before noticed, for example, that the cats directly address the people as Man and Ma'am, which makes perfect sense for cats.
Cats, but as if they're reporters for a feline news network, relating dramatic events within the household. Three adults and one ten year old in my household read this book, and none of us could keep from laughing out loud. Unless you despise cats and all their cat-related ways, give this a try.
This was very cute and occasionally made me chuckle - three cats sharing a home act as newscasters reporting the goings-on in their abode. The last half of the book seemed stronger than the first half (or, at the very least, I enjoyed it more).
According to the American Psychological Association: "Research suggests that the critical ingredient for a chuckle is incongruity. But if you can also point to some unspoken truth, you'll hit humor gold." Cat lovers everywhere will see the quirky humor in this cat comic, because they live it. My particular favorites were the empty cat bowl and the bimonthly 2:00 AM Running of the Cats. Recommended for all ages!
This book is a collection of comic strips, and if you've ever lived with cats you'll have a smile on your face the entire time. Elvis, Puck, and Lupin are three indoor kitties who jointly run the Cat Network (CN), covering breaking news that matter to cats, which include the appearance of a mysterious red dot, strange cats outside the window, why the food bowl remains empty, and other geopolitical issues of the day. A quick and fun read for all ages.
Pawsitively brilliant! Each watercolor panel is a work of art in itself, and the details often hide tiny stories in plain sight - watch out for those robber mice! I've followed the comic strip since Georgia published the first one online, and I'm delighted to see the first of what I hope will be many collections of her work.
This book is purrrrrfect for all cat lovers, a MUST READ!!! Georgia Dunn has a vivid imagination, getting into the heads of her 3 cats and weaving wonderfully charming stories aka broadcasts with beautifully painted illustrations. I have been following her online for a couple of years now, and she just keeps getting better and better. Just when you think you've seen her best work, she tops herself. Every comic is a favorite! I love, love, love Breaking Cat News, and if you check this book out you will too!!! If you can't wait for the sequel, then get caught up at http://www.breakingcatnews.com/
Soooooo cute! Yes, it did need five extra o's, it's that cute. I recommend this to all lovers of cats, comics and comedy. So pretty much everyone, yeah?
Okay, cat humor is inane, but at least this made me chuckle a few times. It probably would have been better in small doses rather than read all at once.
"Word on the street is the door to the spare room with the awesome sun spot on the floor was accidentally left open."
After announcing that, the news anchors of Breaking Cat News cut to their "man on the scene" only to find him sprawled on the carpet snoozing in the sunspot, mic laying on the floor next to him.
Similarly, on page 75, the news anchor announces that the "People" of the house have just ordered a belly warmer. In the next panel, we see Puck the cat reporter lying on a freshly arrived pizza box.
In the world of cat science, we learn that the leading theory about loud sounds links thunder to vacuum cleaners. We also learn that "Hair Ball-O'clock" is 4:30 in the morning, which sounds about right.
Anthropomorphic animals are usually depicted as humans in action, but here they are depicted as pretty much acting like cats. It's funny stuff. Sometimes a bit repetitive maybe, but cute, nonetheless.
It's not merely things we humans overlook that constitutes breaking news for cats, but things that are not as they normally are. Cats don't like the apple cart upset, unless there's some potential gain in the interruption of the routine.
The cats have their adventures in parallel with the running story in the background of the human lives, with the People serving as the alter egos of author Georgia Dunn and her husband, going through the life changes of marriage -- moving to a new home and having a baby.
One of the book's funnier punchlines has the Woman telling the cat that the baby is hungry, which the cat says proves the baby has feelings.
Cat owners will get a chuckle recognizing the behaviors, and maybe a greater appreciation of how cats can point out little things that we take for granted.
So funny and so adorable. I absolutely loved this. I came across this at work (I work at the public library) and was laughing out in the stacks while I flipped through it, so I took it home and kept on laughing. I'm going to buy a paper copy. The humour is spot-on and very well observed and if you like cats, you may find this very amusing. If you love and live with cats, the scenes in this household may seem strangely familiar and I laughed a lot at the cats' adventures in their home with their people (because they happen in my house too, every day). The premise is that there are three cats that live in a house together and they report on the local goings-on (a.k.a. the most pressing geopolitical issues of our time) for the CN (Cat Network) News, complete with neckties and little microphones in their hands. It's a serious business and totally hilarious. This comic is smart, charming, adorable, and wonderfully funny.
Breaking Cat News: Cats Reporting on the News that Matters to Cats was a delightful collection of the early Breaking Cat News comics.
Reporters Elvis, Lupin, and Puck cover all the news a cat would need to know. With the adventurous Lupin serving as anchor, Elvis and Puck serve as reporters in the field. With breaking reports from the empty food bowl to the strange cat in the back yard, these reporters are ready to be on the front line covering it all.
Breaking Cat News has been one of my favorite comic strips for years and I loved revisiting some of the earlier strips. The illustrations in these comics are quite adorable and you see the style change quite a bit from the earliest strips to the ones at the end. Dunn improves her skill a lot throughout the strips and captures the cats' expressions perfectly. The idea of cats as reporters is a great idea as their curious nature makes it a wonderful fit.
With this being the earliest collection of the comics, it introduces us to a lot of the characters who become mainstays as the strip goes on. This collection also sees our intrepid reporters move into the big pink house which becomes a staple location throughout the series. With stories ranging from the first invasion of the June bug, the return of the vacuum cleaner, the people bring home the baby, and many more, this collection has a little bit of everything. One thing I love about these comics is that I can definitely see my own cats doing a lot of the things Elvis, Lupin, and Puck do.
Overall Breaking Cat News: Cats Reporting on the News that Matters to Cats was an adorable read and I would highly recommend it to cat lovers. I will definitely be picking up more of these collections in the future.
I am a big fan of the online comic so this book was a must-buy for me. The comic started off as short, standalone sketches of life through the author's cats' eyes, and developed into multi-comic storylines with beautiful and detailed art. This volume ends before the big stories start, but you can already see the artwork really take off.
This is a great introduction to the BCN "world" if you haven't read it before, and a lovely keepsake for longtime readers.
I read this in one sitting yesterday because I am the target demographic: married with multiple mischievous kitties. A print compilation of the web comic Breaking Cat News that will please anyone whose idea of a good time is watching cats dressed like newscasters reporting all the news that matters to cats. Their reframing of what goes on in their world is hysterical, and the style is a lovely watercolor/impressionistic take that makes Lupin, Puck, Elvis, and their humans seem even more charming. This would be a good comic to convince skeptical folks that comics have merit. I mean. Who doesn't love cats? Would fit well in small, cozy collections where every purchase needs to be guaranteed to please.
This book of cartoons about three cat reporters working for Cat News (CN) is perfectly cat. Lupin anchors the news desk while Puck and Elvis report from the field. CN covers only matters of interest to cats. This includes boxes full of styrofoam peanuts, empty boxes, moths, spiders, bees, the race course for that night’s race through the house at 2 am, the terror of the vacuum cleaner, encounters with skunks, and, of course, food. The book is adorable. I particularly liked the advice the cats give the Woman about throwing up on a rug rather than into the toilet (easier on the paws) and the cats’ theories about how the world outside the windows works. Perfect for any cat lover.
this was so cute and fun!!! I just really love cats and their sass and attitude and personalities and this book totally captured that. the illustrations were adorable and I love the way the cat news reports were written.
Gentle, all-ages humor presents a "cat news network" that will be instantly familiar to anyone who lives with felines. It's not PEANUT BUTTER & JEREMY, but not many things are. BREAKING CAT NEWS will be a cute gift for people who read their comics with a cat on their lap.
This book makes a frequent appearance at story time in our household. We’ve read it several times, but it’s still hilarious. A great, fun book for all ages.
