As a child, Torrie Reynolds entered the haunted Hargrove House on a dare. Terrified by what she'd heard while inside Hargrove House, she avoided it since. Now fifteen years later, Will Dalton offers Torrie the job of refurbishing it, and she has no choice but to take the offer to keep her business afloat. But there is something about Will Dalton that Torrie’s heart can’t ignore, something that calls to her in her dreams, something about him that her soul recognizes. As the house is restored and rooms come alive with character and color Torrie brings to them, her fear of the house fades and her attraction to Will grows stronger. Hargrove House begins to even feel like home to her. With each finished renovation project, it is harder for Torrie to leave the house...Or Will. And although she wants nothing more than a life with Will Dalton within Hargrove House, she discovers there are things more terrifying than ghosts when she learns why Will is digging in the dark, frightening cellar...

Review
When I first came across this book I wasn't sure what to expect. But I knew that the story included mystery and romance. Now, those who know me, know that I love that pairing of book genres. So, to be honest, I really had no choice but to read it. And I'm so thankful I made the right choice.
To not give away any spoilers about the plot you will simply have to read the book.
I loved the feeling and atmosphere of the story. It has this warm feeling that's covered with a mysterious cloak. There were times where I thought, oh no, what's going to happen next. And don't get me started on all the amazing details. It was like watching the story come alive in my head. The climax with it's plot twist was definitely the best part, together with the epilogue. And as for the characters, I adored the children and loved the two main characters. Even the secondary characters were very likable.
This is one very well written romance/mystery story worth your time. So, please, go and buy it!

My review:
This is one of those stories that I liked, I kind of new what I was getting into and I guessed the ending. I kind of hoped the ending would have taken a slightly different direction, even though the ending was still an HEA.
I enjoyed this story overall, but I wanted MORE ... more steam, more intimate scenes, more time with the kids - just more. It was a lot of inner thoughts and not enough dialogue at some points. I did enjoy, though, the difference of this story line.

Not a bad storyline what so ever. There was mystery and romance which is always a plus. Unfortunately it felt as if the characters and story were forced. I was able to picture everything the author described which is always a good thing. The story kept my attention even though I knew early in the book where it was headed. There were a lot of grammar issues unfortunately. Words ran together, some words were missing and other words were added to sentences that didn't belong. All in all I would gladly read another book from this author!
Torrie stepped into the Hargrove House when she was a teenager on a dare and it spoke her name. After that she has always had a fear of the house, but not she has been asked to oversea the decorating and restoration of the house from it’s new owner Will Dalton.
There is something strange about Will Dalton, but he has no fear of the house and actually lives there. Torrie can’t help but be drawn to Will and it’s not like he is trying to keep things on a professional level as he keeps holding her hand, etc. Though she knows something is a bit off, someone is digging in the cellar and she is pretty sure it’s Will. But why would he be digging in the cellar.
There there are his children, it’s like one day they just showed up and he never mentioned having kids before. Torrie gets mad at first but then it seems like all he has to do is kiss her and she forgets why she was mad. The whole time I am reading this I am thinking something is just not right…this family is way strange.
Hargrove House was an interesting and strange romantic read and not really at all what I was expecting. The more you get into the story the stranger it becomes and to be honest I don’t think I can say much without giving the plot away.
I sort of guessed what was going on but the ending still sort of took me by surprise, but over all I liked the story. It was a different type of romance. :)
Hargrove House by Allie Harrison Book #1: The Haunted Series Source: Netgalley/Publisher My Rating: 3/5 stars My Review:
Everyone in town knows Hargrove House is haunted and only the truly brave will take up the dare to go into the house. As a child, Torrie Reynolds took up the challenge, entered the house, and heard it call her by name before she bolted. For 15 years Torrie has managed to avoid Hargrove House but when Will Dalton walks into her office with deep pockets and free rein to redecorate, she once again walks in to Hargrove House.
The moment Torrie takes on the Hargrove House restoration, everything goes her way. The contractors and crews she wants are all available immediately, the rooms seem to speak to Torrie in terms of decoration, and every item she wants for decorating is available and shipped instantly. Will Dalton made it absolutely clear, there are only two conditions, don’t enter the master bedroom and meet the December deadline. With the luck Torrie is having, the deadline won’t be any problem at all.
You know that phrase if it seems too good to be true, it probably is? Torrie does too and from the beginning, Hargrove House just doesn’t feel quite right. Torrie seems to be the only person who ever sees Will Dalton, on a regular basis she hears what sounds like digging from the cellar, and every time she leaves the house, she feels an incredible sense of loss. For every oddity, there is a warm, fuzzy: Will’s interest in Torrie is made clear almost instantly, the new house keeper is an excellent cook, and much to Torrie’s surprise, Will has children she adores from the very moment she meets them. As the deadline for the project goes ever nearer, Torrie begins to feel as if she won’t ever be able to leave Hargrove House and she just doesn’t understand why.
The Bottom Line: Hargrove House turned out to be an OK read for me. It’s hard not to get hooked when the opening pages have a little girl hearing her name being whispered in a reportedly haunted house and then running all the way home. 15 years later . . . from the moment Will walks into Torrie’s life something is simply off and every time Torrie begins to suspect or ask questions, Will has an answer ready to go. Even when another kid appears. As the plot unfolds (and I won’t be spoiling anything here!), it is easy for the reader to figure out what’s really going on and how everything is going to play out but by the end, there are some elements of the plot that aren’t adequately addressed or simply ignored. I found myself frustrated by the lack of explanation but not so much that it kept me from finishing the book and generally enjoying it. I tend to cut the author a bit of slack for a first in a series read and fully intend to check out the second book in The Haunted series.
A Modern Ghost Story Torrie Reynolds isn’t the only child to enter the reputedly haunted Hargrove House on a dare. But she’s the only one to hear her name called and claim a crystal from the chandelier as a memento. Fifteen years later, Torrie’s interior decorating business is in a serious slump when Will Dalton walks into her office with an offer she can’t refuse -- restore Hargrove House to its original glamor. With her client’s seemingly unlimited funds, Torrie hires specialists and makes amazing progress on the project. In fact, she’s never had a project progress so smooth. As the weeks pass, little things nag at Torrie’s mind. Why have none of the others working in the house ever seen Will Dalton? Where has the housekeeper suddenly appeared from? How can she cook without a functional kitchen? And children? Who’s digging in the cellar? Ms. Harrison blends past and present as her heroine fights an unexplained attraction to Will Dalton and the secrets of Hargrove House
I would give this book a solid 3 stars! My review will be vague since I don't want spoil anything. This book was intriguing from the first page. A lot of people say the ending was predictable, but I didn't think it was all that much. This book has eery, mystery, romance, and spooky undertones. I do have to say that the grammar wasn't very good in this book. I found a few typos and several spelling errors. I don't know if I'd go out of my way to read another book by this author. But, I think it's definitely worth giving a try.
*I won an e-copy of this book from a giveaway. This does not influence my opinion whatsoever*
When she was 11-years-old, Victoria (Torrie) Reynolds accepted a dare to enter the empty and supposedly haunted Hargrove House located in her hometown. Bravely, she went inside, picked up a crystal she saw lying on the floor and put it in her pocket. When she heard a voice say “Victoria,” she fled from the house and ran all the way home. Now, 15 years later, finds her as a struggling decorator in the same town. The new owner of Hargrove House approaches her and asks her to refurbish and decorate the house. The owner, Will, gives her the authority to decorate the house the way she would like to see it. While Torrie is surprised at this, she is also pleased and as she has such wonderful ideas for making the house perfect.
The story of the house is that the family that lived there many years ago vanished on the wife’s birthday and were never found. It is also rumored that someone the family knew killed them and buried them in the basement. No reason for that was ever found.
As Will wants the work on the house completed in time for him to host a holiday party in December, Torrie immediately starts ordering things and arranging for workers. She is amazed at how readily available workers and furnishings are so that things start coming together quickly.
When Will insists that Torrie set up her office in one of the rooms in the house rather than run back and forth to her office, that makes sense and works for her. However, this constant togetherness sparks an attraction between them.
When Will’s children start to show up in the house, Torrie is surprised that he never mentioned them before. They are sweet children and soon themselves to Torrie. There are times that certain things in the house don’t make sense but Will always seems to have an explanation for them. But one thing that never gets explained is that strange swishing sound coming from the dark basement that sounds like someone digging.
Come read this really good spooky story. I’m betting you won’t want to put it down until you solve the mystery.
If you are looking for a good haunted house book, this probably isn't the one for you. If, however, you enjoy a good old-fashioned gothic romance, keep reading.
Torrie Reynolds is a struggling interior decorator who is hired to completely refurbish the local haunter house, Hargrove House. The fact that she accepted a dare to enter this house when she was young at first deters her, but the charming new owner, Will Dalton, quickly wins her over.
With the spare no expenses attitude of her new boss, Torrie takes the job. For some reason, everything falls into place very easily and renovations progress quickly. The only problem is that Torrie keeps hearing digging noises coming from the cellar and none of the workers seem to hear it.
The storyline isn't really anything new, but it did keep me reading. The ending did have some unexpected twists. But, there were some very abrupt transitions in a couple of places that interrupted the flow of the story. Also, the middle part of the book dragged at times because the reader could see what happening while Torrie seemed oblivious to what was going on around her.
All in all, an entertaining read if you love gothic romances, but not for a reader who is expecting a haunted house story complete with ghosts. There really weren't any scary parts in the book at all, which I would expect from a book subtitles "The Haunted".
Oh man, I can't tell you enough how much I loved reading this book, although when I started reading this book I wasn't sure if I would really like it because Mrs. Harrison is a new to me author, but I should have read it sooner because I really loved this story! I especially loved going along with Torrie and her journey towards remembering what happened to her and her family, and loved finding out that in death she was able be get rid of their killer and live HEA with her family! Thank you so much Mrs. Harrison for letting me read your awesome book, and I truly can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series!!!!!
Hargrove House by Allie Harrison is a must read for the lover of haunted house books.
Against her better judgement Torrie Reynolds accepts a job from the mysterious Will Dalton, in which she had free reign to remodel and decorate Hargrove House, her towns legendary haunted house.
As the house begins to feel more and more like a true home once more, the mystery surrounding it grows deeper.
I received this copy of Hargrove House by Allie Harrison from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
It took me longer than it should have to read but at no fault of the subject matter. That being said I absolutely loved this book. From the moment Torrie first enters the "haunted house" as a child on a dare. ..to Torrie the business woman who's been hired to decorate the same house. This is my first book from Allie Harrison but it definitely won't be the last! I recommend this book highly to everyone.
This was the first book, I have read by Allie Harrison, and unlike the saying I judge a book by the cover, but also the little description, this did not disappoint. I really liked it. A suspenseful thriller romance all rolled into this book. Once Torrie steps foot into the Hargrove House as an 11yr old on a dare and hears a whisper of her name her life gets turned upside down.
I couldn't put this book down, or shut my Kindle off. This story had me hooked but the first sentence. It's a definite read. I'm looking forward to the next on the series
I don't do romance, seriously I never read it but this may book the book that changes that. I loved every word of this book and plan to start book 2 right now.
Allie Harrison has become on of my favorite authors with this book. I was so drawn into the book and the mystery I could not put it down. As I am writing this review I have already started book 2 Montgomery Manor.
In the book Victoria "Torrie" Reynolds is a struggling interior designer. One day a smoking hot man comes into her office to hire her to bring back the home he has just purchased to its prior beauty. Easy enough right?
The house just happens to be the famous Hardwick House. Yes its only famous in Torrie's hometown, but it is famous for being haunted. As a child Torrie was dared to go into the house. She did and heard her name being called. She ran away and never returned. Until now.
Hardwick House needs tons of work but with an unlimited bank account from William Dalton Torrie will have no problem restoring the old home. Strange things happen though. Torrie keeps hearing digging sounds coming from the basement. Each time Torrie goes into a room she immediately pictures how the room should look. Getting the items she needs for the home is the easiest she has ever seen, and more.
There is lots of mystery surrounding the house as well. The family who lived here around a century ago were thought to have been murdered but no bodies were ever found, which led to the idea of the haunting. As scared as Torrie is at first the more she works at the house the less she fears it, and the more her feelings grown for the new owner Will Dalton.
The Hargrove House has always been haunted and when Torrie Reynolds was young she entered the house on a dare. But when she heard it call her name she ran and never went back. Until Will Dalton, the new owner, asks her to renovate the house. But the more Torrie is in the house the more it starts to feel like home. Plus her attraction to Will doesn’t hurt either. But things start taking a strange turn and the past seems to be reaching out to the present.
This is a great read. Torrie is a wonderful character and although she would rather be anywhere but at the Hargrove House, she does need the money. But there is more to this story than a simple haunting. I loved the connection to the past and what happened. But I really enjoyed the sweet romance between Torrie and Will.
I loved the story and the unexpected twists. I admit that I kind of expected the ending but the story needed to wrapped up and this did a great job. Allie Harrison wrote a great story and left me wanting to know what is going to happen in book two.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Torie is a designer working in her hometown. Business is slow and then a customer comes in, Will, who hires her to redo the local haunted Victorian Hargrove house. She cannot believe it! The sky is the limit on money and she is allowed to decorate it as she sees fit. Strange things abound...she is the only one who actually sees Will...and as time goes on children appear too. She feels at home there...she feels like part of the family...she experiences flashes from a bygone era. Is she losing her mind? Is the place haunted? What will happen when she discovers the truth of what happened to the family who disappeared from there?
Enjoyed this book even though it wasn't a scary haunted house story. I found it to be more of a romance. You gradually begin to realize what is going on between half and a third of the way and the ending aS decent. My only complaint would be that the reader is sort of left to decide for themselves what happens to a specific person because it isn't explained. I will give another of her books a try.
It reminds me of some of the dares I did. Haunted house I'm in I bought these because I wanted something different to read and I love horror. The way its wrote it will draw you in and you will believe this happened or could have

This is a haunted house story but feels much more like a romance, so not my usual genre. That said I did find the story to be interesting, and the characters were fascinating. There weren't many twists, but there really didn't need to be as the story flowed well without them.
I loved this book! The author did an awesome job of mixing paranormal, falling in love and a mystery with a few twist and turns. I will definitely be reading more by this author.
I despise paying for typos which were the only things scary and haunting...
I think my headline pretty much sums it up. If I purchase a book, whether actual printed paper or electronic, I get rather upset when there are typos and grammatical errors.
On a different note, I didn't realize this was a love story...blah blah blah. I personally do not enjoy the romantic ramblings of a woman (and I am a woman -lol). I downloaded the sample first which did not give me the impression of a romance novel before purchasing the book...what a disappointment! Nothing against the author...this story line has been told many times and I'm sure will be told many more.
A great read with stunning sensual detail and a riveting storyline, Hargrove House is the first of the Haunted series written by Allie Harrison and she has knocked it out of the park! There were, admittedly, a couple of trivial inconsistencies in the details of character knowledge; but they’re not enough to slow this story down. Hargrove House will keep readers captivated from beginning to end! I can’t wait to read book 2 in the series to see what Harrison has in store for us next!
Spoilers..... it was a good read. I really enjoyed it. Full of ghosts. Even though you kind of know what's going on, you kind of wonder, how? I didn't give it 5 stars because I thought the ending was a bit abrupt. I wanted to know what happened to friends and family in the present. I love the part about the ring though. Tee hee
I really enjoyed the story line and the intrigue. I felt I was there, experiencing it along with the characters. I've already bought the next book by this author. Thank you..
If you are looking to read about romance this is the book for you. My expectation leaned more toward a heart thumping, pulse racing, page turning, can't put it down "haunting".
