When Pigs Fly

Rate this book
As a gun is pointed in her direction, Maddie falls on the subway tracks—with the train in the tunnel only minutes away. Her spiky heel is caught. While she desperately tries to pull it free, her friends look down from the platform, frozen in shock. It is then that a tall man in a ball cap jumps down to save her. Although his face is in the shadows, there's no mistaking the pale green eyes that stare back at her in terror—they're just like her own—before all goes black!

'When Pigs Fly' by Joy Lynn Goddard brought back so many memories from my own teen years. Ms. Goddard can turn back the clock for the reader and place many of us back in time to those coming-of-age, hard, struggling days of adolescence. When choosing a book by this author, no matter if it is in the young adult novel or adult mystery genre, one can be assured it is written with sincerity, true-to-life experiences, and well researched knowledge of the subject. Be prepared to walk down memory lane within the pages of this book. The time spent is well worth it.

Maddie's summer is supposed to be filled with fun and adventure—with mountain-bike racing and camping in Muskoka with her friends and hanging around her new boyfriend, too—but then her deadbeat dad walks back into her life to ruin everything . . . and the summer turns tragic! Unlike my other coming-of-age-novels, this book is more suitable for older teens. Although in parts it is dark, there are elements of light and humour in it too. Readers will find Maddie's relationship with her dad both heartbreaking and heartwarming, and likely for some—it will feel all too familiar!
