Master thief Lexa Pate always prided herself on never being caught. That changed the night she freed the artificial humans of Triarch City, a people she’s still learning to identify with. Now, imprisoned by the government, she’s separated from her family—and the love of her life—while facing murder charges. What she doesn’t know is something far worse awaits the Quad intends to make her pay for her crimes.
After helplessly watching Lexa be captured, Quinn has to place his trust in a group of people he barely knows to save the girl he loves. The rebels outside Triarch City have the equipment—and the information—he needs to rescue Lexa. But, knowing the Quad has sophisticated brainwashing techniques, his biggest worry is who she’ll be even if they do manage to bring her home.
Pawns in a game they barely understand, Lexa and Quinn will have to use all the gifts they possess to fight the powers seeking to control them and find a way back to each other.
Kendra C. Highley lives in north Texas with her husband and two children. She also serves as staff to four self-important and high-powered cats. This, according to the cats, is her most important job. She believes in everyday magic, extraordinary love stories, and the restorative powers of dark chocolate
***I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. All thoughts are 100% my own.***
We’re back with Lexa and Quinn, though they aren’t together. Lexa has been arrested and is being held prisoner by the Quad and Quinn is desperate to get her back. Everyone is unwilling to have one without the other, so Lexa is being used as a pawn to get Quinn to come in, all while being pumped with misinformation. And Quinn is being held back from rushing headlong into getting her out as soon as humanly possible. The Quad wants them alive and together and the rebels do too. And all Lexa and Quinn, especially, want is to be around one another and live peacefully without all the political intrigue.
FLOVE Quinn. I loved him in Unstrung, I completely and utterly fell in love with him in Unfinished. And I promise that THAT emotion carries over into Uprising. His frustration and his fear and his worry are almost palpable. And poor Lexa. The poor girl doesn’t know which end is up, and honestly, when we’re in her head space, we really have a hard time knowing which end is up too. I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the characters, Jole is really a shining star for me in this book. I know he was adamant that he was capable in the first, but in this he REALLY shows himself MORE than capable.
Ms. Highley is keeping me on my toes with this series. I love Lexa and Quinn and Joel and Doc and now Rusty, and I’m not sure how I feel about Julia, but I do like Marco. She just has this ability to make these characters emotions feel so real like they were my own. When Lexa was angry, I was angry. When Quinn was desperate, I was desperate. When Lexa was sad and filled with self-loathing. I was sad, and just wanted to hug her. I really love this series! And I can’t wait to get this book in paperback to go with my other. Preferably signed! So, YES, I do recommend this series! READ IT!!!
Good, fast paced novel with alternating POV between Quin and Lexa. This novel not only grew the characters and their background, but revealed an overarching villain(s) that need to be destroyed. The lines are defined - the rebellion begins. And all hell is likely to break out in the next book, which I have to wait for, dammit!
For the adults - a LOT less teenage angst in this one. Yay!
I'm really surprised there are not more reviews of this excellent story. This book has tension that builds through the chapters and there is action galore. The action is almost non-stop, there is no time for romance, despite the incredible relationship tension between Lexa and Quinn. Of course, that's because they were created for each other (see Book 1). This Book starts just after the ending of Unstrung. Lexa is in a max security prison, Quinn, Turpin, Doc, Dr. Keller, and Jole are hiding out in a clinic, planning Lexa's rescue. Since it picks up shortly after Book 1, Book 2 would be most enjoyable and understandable if you read Unstrung first. Then continue immediately with this. There is a lot of the storyline that makes much more sense if you've read Unstrung first. Things go from bad to worse as Lexa's rescue fails and she is taken to the Glass House. She learns the K700s are the end of the line; the K800s are a decoy; she and Quinn were designed to be the Quad's assassins. History alluded to in Unstrung is revealed. Quinn and an army plan to take down the invincible Quad and rescue Lexa. Will they succeed? Knowing Lexa and Quinn, I'd bet on it. But read the story to find out what goes right and what goes wrong.
Peril after peril after peril assault the pair of lovers tearing them apart. The characters feel real. I like the action, humor, and bit of romance. Will Quinn and Lexa ever be able to simply bask in the glow of their love. I look forward to another book.
2.5 stars. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but found myself disappointed in this one. The plot just didn't quite work for me and found myself bored with the direction things took.
Lexa and Quinn are back and the stakes get higher. In this one, we learn a lot about the story world as Lexa struggles to survive her imprisonment, and Quinn goes all out to rescue her. I won't go into detail for fear of spoiling the plot, but the tension builds as one action scene flows smoothly into the next, making the book impossible to put down.
As with all of Kendra's books, the characters are wonderfully developed with true depth. Even the secondary characters are fleshed out, making the world Lexa and Quinn live in come alive. (There might be a pun in there since the series deals with artificial life and what it means to be human.)
To sum up, this was a great addition to the Unstrung Series. I can't wait for book three!
