Lisa April Smith is the award winning author of "Dangerous Lies," "Exceeding Expectations" first in the 'Charlie' series, "Paradise Misplaced," second in the series and her latest, "The Second Best Time," third in the series - launch date 1/1/2016- all in the genre she playfully calls “Suspense with Sizzle." But perhaps one reviewer succinctly said it best: “Lisa April Smith’s books have the pace and heat of Jacqueline Susann and the style and sophistication of Dominick Dunne.”

Her fourth book, "Forgotten Tales of China," is her first venture into historical fiction, and has received reviews. Epic in scope, it skillfully blends scientific data with Smith’s acknowledged gift for storytelling.

This is really a 3.5 star book, but I rounded it up because of the mystery of Jack Morgan. I ordered this book by mistake, I thought it was by April Smith, a very reliable author. After I got it, I decided to give it a try. The first chapter is really well written and draws you in quickly. After that it fizzles to a standard mystery/romance with the mystery being very good and the romance a waste of time. The romance is somewhat different than most romances in that it is quite erotic. If you like mysteries this might just float your boat, and if you like erotic romances it might also get you going.

Get past the cover! This is a great book!

Charlie, a girl in her early 20's, is just another over-indulged, wealthy daughter of Palm Beach who's major concerns are horses, parties and gossip. Then, her father commits suicide, her sister has a mental breakdown and her posh step-mother leaves them penniless. The beautiful life comes to a dead halt, and Charlie, who never even learned to wash dishes, has to get a job.

When Charlie sets out to discover why her beloved, pampering father would abandon them, knowingly leaving her sister and her without a means of support, she discovers more than she ever could image about him, herself and her abilities to "exceed expectations." She also discovers that PB society may not always get it right about love and class, when she meets and gets help from the brilliant young lawyer, Andy Garcia clone, Raul. Armed with Raul's encouragement, her own pride and tenacity, Charlie uses her only skill; modelling, to help finance herself and her sister while she travels from Palm Beach to NYC, across the US and to Paris in search of some answers.

I appreciate Lisa Smith as a seasoned author with astute writing skills after having read and reviewed her "Dangerous Lies" last year. She has a brilliance for conveying characters, and the intellectual capacity to place them in historical settings that sparkle with glamorous detail.

In fact, it's the authentic details of the time-periods that make it fun to read Lisa's book as it skips from Charlie's current days of the late 1950's and early '60's to the past Palm Beach and Manhattan, with hints of Sister Parish's posh interior designs, famous museums and artists, the fashions of different eras, vintage cars and high society parties. Her historical and fictitious characters work in sync as they are perfectly set in these time frames, and midst the transitory madness of WWs I and II Paris.

Lisa Smith's writing isn't over-blown with emotion and sappy romance; rather, it is sophisticated and subtle. It's witty, fun and sassy. There's love of family; and, there are affairs of the heart, pain and anxieties that accompany romantic relationships in difficult times, intrigue and madness. I loved this kettle of mystery and suspense that dominates her characters.

I'm a fan of Ms Smith's. I love a good story with interesting characters, a mystery and a romance that's not over-the-top but that rests securely in reality. I like foreign intrigue and the sophistication of art and society. Most of all, I so appreciate an intelligent author of worldly experience! If you do, too, you'll love "Exceeding Expectations." This book has a sequel which I'm dying to read!

Jack Morgan has meticulously and successfully staged his own suicide leaving behind his beloved-daughters Charlotte (Charlie) and Amelia and their step-mother Petal his current wife. Upon hearing the devastating news Amelia suffers a breakdown and Charlie is faced with the daunting task of picking up the pieces.

Charlie is 23 years old and has lived a charmed life but all that is about to change as her step-mother leaves her and her sister penniless and she is forced to make a life of her own with only herself to rely on. Charlie is determined to uncover the reason for her father’s suicide and along the way uncovers a tangled web of mystery and revelations.

Raul Francesco, a young Cuban attorney, has a chance encounter with Charlie in her step-mother’s lawyer’s office and becomes a willing participant in her search for the truth of her father’s death as well as her search for herself. This journey will take Charlie from Palm Beach to New York and Paris as the truth of her father’s life is revealed and the building of her own life is achieved.
This is a captivating story with a sublime mix of suspense and intrigue combined with a sophisticated tale of romance.

The story is written with great attention to detail and splashed with authenticity and realism. It traverses the time periods of the 1930-1940’s in Paris and 1950–1960’s in Palm Beach Florida as told in first person narrative by Charlie.

Charlie is a character that is totally captivating as she carries you along on her journey. She grows within herself to become a strong, intelligent and capable young woman who has claimed and cherishes her independence. Raul is a strong, intelligent and fascinating character and the relationship that is forged between these two characters is a delight to see unfold. All the characters woven into this story are well defined and contribute a great deal to its drama and intensity.

It is apparent that a great deal of research went into the writing of this book which I thoroughly appreciate as it serves to enrich and bring to life the background of the story. The author has a great sense of sophistication to her writing which I find fascinating as it kept me totally involved in the story; the truth is I had a hard time putting this book down!!

I highly recommend Exceeding Expectations to anyone who enjoys an intelligently written and captivating romantic/suspense story, this is a real page-turner.

Exceeding Expectations is a book that will do just that. The blurb sounds great but once you delve into the book you realize it is so much more packed into one book. It's fascinating, has interesting and diverse characters and a plot line that will draw you in from the first page.

As you know from most of my reviews characters are first and foremost to me, and Exceeding Expectations has some wonderful characters. While the story starts off with Jack Morgan and he appears through the book, the real main character is Charlie, Jack's youngest daughter. I did not think I would like her at first. When you first meet her she seems spoiled and pretty useless. However, her growth in this story is amazing and makes the story astounding. Raul also offers great interest in the story. I liked him, he is nice and a great romantic interest. He seems to know just how to treat Charlie to get her to grow and change. He's not wishy-washy, and he acts like a real man without talking down to her or treating her bad. I really found him to be a very attractive man and perfect for Charlie in the book.

As for the plot, I love how Ms. Smith goes back and forth between the past and present in the story. The present is relative in the story since the present is in the 1950s. I love the setting and how the history factors into the story and the motivations of the characters. The plot moves along with the character growth, the suspense of Charlie trying to figure out what happened to motivate her father to commit suicide and the things she learns along the way. The romance also pushes the story along. It all adds up to make a book that really draws you in.

I felt as though I was right there with the characters in this book. I was fully invested in Charlie's life and trying to find out what had happened to Jack. The book has it all, suspense, romance, characters that truly care about others and characters that are truly evil. Ms. Smith has crafted an amazing book and I can't wait until the sequel to this one. Though I would like to note that this one ties up nicely with a few loose ends, but nothing that will leave you fussing at the author for leaving you hanging. Just some things left open that will make for an interesting next book. If you enjoy character growth novels set in the past with some suspense, then Exceeding Expectations is for you. But make sure you set aside some time, because you won't want to put this one down.

Exceeding Expectations by Lisa April Smith Lisa April Smith

Sure, there’s the old adage about not judging a book by its cover and all that, but what about judging a book by its title? In the case of "Exceeding Expectations" by Lisa April Smith, readers certainly have just cause to judge it by the title because, after having had the privilege of reading it, I can personally attest that this book went well beyond exceeding my expectations.

Lisa April Smith, who also penned "Dangerous Lies", has woven an intriguingly rich tapestry of delightful well-developed characters into a perfectly balanced plot bursting with riveting mystery, crimes of the petty and the horrible sort, suspenseful twists, and romantic tension complete with love scenes that sizzle and pop. If you’re looking for a suspenseful romantic mystery novel that you’ll find virtually impossible to put down, even for much-needed sleep, "Exceeding Expectations" contains all the ingredients you seek and more.

Set in the varied and stunning backdrops of early 1960s Palm Beach and Manhattan high society, as well as mid-1930s to early 1940s Paris, “Exceeding Expectations” provided me with so much more than mere entertainment. I found myself transported with ease into different eras by Ms. Smith’s eloquent descriptions and witty turns of phrase. I don’t believe that I’m the only bookworm that tends to learn new things, even from fiction; therefore, I must give much-deserved recognition to Ms. Smith for her keenly descriptive insights into the culture, government, and history of Paris, France during the years just prior and flowing into the atrocities of World War II. I learned things I had not previously been aware of regarding shifts in societal attitudes in the years between WWI and WWII as well as gaining insights into the machinations of Adolf Hitler’s plans for the Nazi German hegemony of continental Europe as experienced from the perspective of the citizens of France at that time.

The characters of “Exceeding Expectations” are replete with such extraordinarily depicted personalities that, not only does the reader feel as though they know them personally, but also one ends up feeling more than a bit attached. There’s the scandalous yet likeable rapscallion, Jack Morgan, whose primary interest has always been that of ensuring the welfare and status of his two pampered daughters, Amelia and Charlie, whatever the cost—even if that means taking his own life. Then we have the tall, beautiful, overindulged yet utterly endearing Charlie, Jack’s younger daughter whom he has raised to believe in herself regardless of the leg deformity she was born with. Much to the dismay of her second stepmother, Petal, Charlie is determined to find definitive answers as to why her beloved father suddenly committed suicide, especially if those answers will, in any way, facilitate the recovery of her older sister, Amelia, from the psychological breakdown she suffered when she finally succumbed to the grief of their father’s unexpected death. Offering to assist Charlie in her quest for answers is the vivacious, handsome, flirtatious, swaggering, and charming young attorney, Raul, an assistant from the law office handling Jack’s estate whose origins happen to be from the proverbial wrong side of the tracks according to the society in which Charlie and Amelia were brought up.

This mystery delves deeper than one could begin to imagine, including crimes spanning decades and oceans. The stylishly written and intoxicating romantic tension escalates to levels that will have the reader fanning themselves while, at the same time, craving more. Complete with shocking plot twists that will quite literally make the reader gasp aloud, “Exceeding Expectations” is a definite must-read for anyone who enjoys thorough entanglement and immersion in a well-written romantic suspense novel.

Did I mention that Lisa April Smith is currently in the midst of creating the sequel to this jaw-dropping novel? Oh yes, indeed, folks. “Exceeding Expectations” ends with a shocking epilogue which is actually the prologue to “Paradise Misplaced” and all I can say without giving away any spoilers is that I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes next from the mind of the incredible, creative, intelligent, and inspiring Lisa April Smith.

In the interest of full disclosure, the author gave me a pre-launch copy of this book in exchange for my honest and thorough review of her creation.

As always, your comments are both welcomed and encouraged. Blessed Be.

What would you do if the father that you have loved all your life committed suicide and left you questioning why he did it? What would you do if you found out that he didn't leave a will, and now you are basically penniless? Would you follow your instincts and try to find out why your father killed himself, even if the search provided answers to secrets that may be better left buried? And now that you are left on your own, can you pick up the pieces and live an independent life? These are the questions that Charlotte "Charlie" Morgan had to answer during her journey to find out who her father really had been and why he decided to kill himself in Exceeding Expectations.

Twenty-three year old Palm Beach debutante Charlotte "Charlie" Morgan has led a charmed life until the night her father died. Left penniless and soon to be homeless by her stepmother, Charlie has to grow up fast and learn to take care of herself and her older sister Amelia, who had a mental breakdown and is in a clinic. Charlie wants to find out why her father committed suicide, and a young Cuban lawyer, Raul Francesco, is more than willing to help her get on her feet and investigate her father's death. Charlie and Raul embark on a journey that will span the decades of 1930-1940s (WWII) Paris to the 1950-1960s Palm Beach in search of the truth of who her father really was, as well as define what type of person she will become.

Exceeding Expectations is a fascinating story with a clever mixture of suspense, intrigue and romance. The storyline is well written, the author transports the reader between alternating decades as she weaves a story about Charlotte's father, Jack Morgan aka Alan Fitzpatrick in the 1930-1940s WWII Paris, with that of the 1950-1960s Palm Beach when Charlie searches for the truth about her father. The attention to detail for those time periods are first rate, the authenticity provides the reader with a fascinating look back at what our world was like in those time periods. The story is told in a first person narrative by Charlie during the current time period of 1962, while the 1930-1940s decades surrounding Jack/Alan's story is told in a third person narrative. The characters are realistic and have complex personalities, their engaging interactions with each other lend more depth to the story. I loved how Charlie's journey transformed her from being a spoiled debutante to a confident and independent woman. I enjoyed reading how the budding relationship between Charlie and Raul developed, it was fun and flirty. I was also fascinated with Jack's story, as a history buff, the authentic details of the WWII and early JFK time periods made the story more powerful and compelling. The story provides plenty of intriguing twists and turns that will keep the reader in suspense, while the subtle romantic scenes are fun and sassy. I love the author's style of writing, she provides the reader with a story that has style and sophistication.

I would recommend Exceeding Expectations to anyone who would like to read an intriguing romantic suspense story that has all the elements that would certainly exceed their expectations!

Exceeding Expectations is told in alternating view points, Jack's and Charlotte's. While all of Charlotte's chapters happen in the present, all but one of Jack's take place in the past. The book starts out with Jack's "death", although we aren't told exactly why he is on the run. From there we meet Charlotte, having just learned the news that her stepmother will only be supporting her and her sister, Amelia, who has been living in a hospital after having a mental breakdown, for a few more months.

Charlotte is desperate to find work and a way to support herself and her sister. She is also desperate to learn why her father felt he needed to kill himself in order to protect the family. Charlotte is a mostly likable character: smart, funny and a little of a disaster when it comes to her feelings. Although she has a few flaws, and who doesn't, I think they were mostly attributed to the time period in which she lived, the 1960's. Times were much different then, and things like racism and sexism were still a common thing.

Not having anyone else to turn to, Charlotte reluctantly accepts the help of a young attorney, Raul, in finding out about her father's past. Of course, a little romance starts to blossom between the two. But Raul is from Cuba and it is highly unacceptable for Charlotte to date, never mind marry, Raul. Naturally, their romance is a rather rocky one and this results in some serious page turning.

Aside from Charlotte's life, we also learn about Jack's. His is one full of secrets and to put it lightly, quite a few woman. He is quite the ladies man, and even though you would think this would make him less of a likable character, it actually didn't. His story was perhaps my favorite of the book. I couldn't wait for more of his past to come up so I could learn more. He loved his children dearly and made many unfortunate sacrifices for them, including walking away from them forever to keep them safe.

The only issue I had while reading this story was all the sexual encounters. While I don't mind a little sex in books, I prefer the quick "then they had sex" way of telling you what happened. Exceeding Expectations is a little more graphic and you are well aware of who is doing what. However, this is just my personal taste and shouldn't deter you from giving this a read, especially if you don't mind juicier details. I just thought I would give you a heads up.

Overall, this was a sensational read. The author keeps this story going at a perfect pace, giving us just enough of one story before switching to the other. There is a little bit of everything you could possible want in this story: mystery, romance, intrigue and a whole lot more. This kept me flying through the pages and desperate to pick up each story where it left of. I'm looking forward to picking up the sequel and reading it as soon as possible. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who loves a good read!

Exceeding Expectations is part love story, part historical fiction and a whole lot of mystery that will keep you guessing on every page. Who was Jack Morgan and why did he kill himself? This is the question that his daughter Charlie desperately needs to answer, and she will go to any length necessary to put the pieces of this puzzle together. Charlie discovers much more about her father and his sordid past than she ever expected and the journey she takes has the power to alter the course of her own life.

Plot-wise there was a lot going on in this novel. There was the story of Charlie and her growth from sheltered and spoiled socialite to independent and confidant woman, as well as her sister Amelia and her crippling response to her father’s suicide. There was the mystery surrounding her father Jack Morgan and his death, then the seemingly disconnected story of Jeremy Randal and his servant Disraeli (which by the end of the novel makes perfect sense). These individual elements were complicated and added to the suspense of the story, but they also left me feeling rather disconnected from the characters. Just as I was becoming immersed in a character and their unfolding story the novel shifted focus. It was a little frustrating as I was never quite ready to move on from a particular story, character or time period and the abrupt change in focus kept me from really caring about or becoming invested in the characters and their stories.

What I enjoyed most about Exceeding Expectations was the way the author chose to tell Jack Morgan’s story. I love when an author can successfully move from present to past smoothly and Smith did this beautifully. As a fan of historical fiction I found the flashbacks to Jack’s life in Paris and how the Nazi occupation affected not only himself but every member of his Parisian family to be particularly interesting. The flashbacks to Jack’s former life were well written and each one served to reveal another piece of the very complicated puzzle that resulted in his apparent suicide.

Exceeding Expectations is an intriguing historical based mystery that will definitely play on your emotions. Once I got into the novel I couldn’t put it down, and may have stayed up until 1:30 am finishing it even though I had to wake up early in the morning! This book didn’t exactly blow me away, but it was an enjoyable read that I would definitely recommend to fans of WWII era historical fiction, and family dramas.

I received an e-book of this novel from the author and Pump Up Your Book blog tours in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

First off I have to say I love the new cover for Exceeding Expectations far better than the first cover, this one is much more suited for such a beautiful book, the old saying is never judge a book by its cover and that's is very true but the old cover just didn't do this lovely book justice, so 5 stars for the new cover. This is the first novel of Lisa's that I have had the pleasure of reading and more to come as I now have her on my favorite author list, Lisa has also written Dangerous Lies which I have on my wish list. I was taken in right away with Exceeding Expectations, and you know that is exactally what this book does when you read it, it exceeds your expectations I was absolutely trapped by this book. It captured me in a way I didn't think it would and held me right to the very last page.

Most books that flip back and forth from one place and time sometimes you can get lost and have to go back feeling we have missed something, I am happy to say, not once did I have to back track to make sure I was still on the same wave as the book, and held your deep interest in the book at the same time. Now with all the fantastic characters Lisa has created, how am I supposed to pick my favorite, well I can't it was a collective group and they all work so well together to create a story that is well told, well plotted out and executed perfectly, Alan aka-Jack Morgan, Amelia and Charlotte(Charlie), Petal, Raul oh goodness what a cast. I'm trying really hard to do this review without revealing anything important so forgive me if I'm being vague today, but I just can't spoil such an amazing book you'd kill me lol. Lisa's writing is so classy it flows with just the right amount of romance, mystery, suspense, and the twists and turns with a surprise at the end that will have you sitting with your mouth hanging open when your done! It's quite the surprise, squeeel, I can't wait for you all to read this book, you must get a copy and read so worth it!!! Lisa thank you so much for allowing me to read/review for you, it has been a huge pleasure for me. Enjoy everyone!!!

I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting as I read EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS, but the novel was certainly an interesting read. As promised, it's filled with surprises, mystery and just a hint of romance - and these elements all certainly came together to create a captivating story.

I actually read an excerpt of the novel (the first chapter, to be precise) before I started reading the actual novel. This chapter mainly focuses on Jack Morgan and how he stages his suicide, and while it is quite interesting, I personally feel like this bit of the story could have been shortened. I can understand, however, that it was probably a necessary plot device so that we could have a little bit of insight into Jack's character.

While I normally go for more character-driven stories, I wasn't particular enamored with Charlotte. I can certainly see how she develops and grows throughout the novel, but I never really connected to her. In fact, I didn't find particularly relate to any character in this novel, though that's not necessarily a bad thing.

It simply means that what drove my interest in this novel was the story itself. It's a well-crafted sort of mystery, a tale of a father's intriguing past life and his daughter's search for the truth. There were a lot of unexpected twists and turns, including acquaintances that would pop up out of nowhere and things that her father left behind. All the elements combined made for a tale that was very imaginative and fun to read about. Plus, I love stories with a logical plot conclusion - and this is certainly one of those stories.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS is a journey that takes you on one young woman's search for the truth, from Florida to New York to Paris and back again. LISA APRIL SMITH certainly knows how to craft a good mystery, and the novel she's written left me feeling fully satisfied at the end.

My Take:
I couldn't put this book down. I will admit that I wasn't sure if I was going to like it when I first started it.
But once I got past the second page, I had to know what was going to happen next. Why did Jack stage his suicide and how could he leave his family? "Charlie" and her sister Amelia suddenly find themselves penniless and facing life on the streets. When they find out their father probably killed himself, Charlie decides to try to figure out why. The story alternates between the 60's (now) and the late 30s to early 40s (then). As Charlie discovers clues about her father and her own history, the reader travels back to the late 30s in France and finds out the real story. I liked how the story flowed. The transitions were smooth and well timed.

I really liked Charlie. On the surface she looks like a spoiled, privileged socialite. Deep down, she is a strong, loving woman who will do anything to take care of the ones she loved. Even if it means getting a job. I liked that while she has led a privileged life, she wasn't naive and clueless. I loved her and Raul together. I was hoping she could get past her own worries about what society would think of her being with a Cuban man find her "Happily Ever After".

Exceeding Expectations is a well written, engaging mystery. While it isn't a traditional whodunit, there are a lot of twists that make it that much more intriguing. There is also a really sweet romance to round out the story. The epilogue leaves a big cliffhanger and I can't wait to read Paradise Misplaced when it comes out. Pick this one up, you won't be sorry!

Exceeding Expectations
By Lisa April Smith

There are only two things that mean anything to Jack Morgan, his daughters, and in order to protect them he must fake his own suicide. His youngest daughter Charlotte is twenty three and after years of having her every whim tended to by her father when he dies and leaves her penniless she has no idea what she is going to do. With her older sister in a “clinic” due to having a mental breakdown after the news of her father’s suicide Charlotte knows she must do something to make money, after a suggestion from a friendly lawyer she tries her hand at modeling soon she finds the independence she craves all the while she investigates why her father had to take his own life uncovering disturbing things along the way.

Lisa April Smith does a wonderful job not only with capturing the nineteen sixties vividly yet subtly but also in enveloping not one but two beautiful romances with glimpses back to pre- World War Two encompassing the love Charlotte’s mother and father found in each other. Even though there is a splendid romance between Charlotte and Raul this story was more about Charlotte and the pain she must overcome after losing her father and then finding a way to support herself and become independent all while searching for answers it is so well written, you find yourself easily lost in the story. I don’t usually compare authors to one another but I must say, Look out Danielle Steel it seems you have some competition for writing intriguing dramatic novels.

Charlie grew up in a pampered life as a socialite. However, everything changed when she receives the news that her father committed suicide. Her father had nothing to leave her and her sister and Charlie is forced to come up with a solution to not only support herself but to pay the clinic bills where her sister is currently being treated for her breakdown. After meeting a nice lawyer, Raul, Charlie decides to find the truth about her father and in doing so unearths a lot more than she bargained for.

In the beginning Charlie is this spoiled young lady who has had everything handed to her on a silver platter but with everything that she goes through in the story, she grows up and leaves her socialite life behind. She no longer cares that she's fallen in love with a man who isn't rich due to his family fortune but instead a Cuban lawyer making an honest living through his labors of work.

The story flip flops between Charlie getting her bearings and everything that her father endured leading up to his suicide. It talks about how he met her mother and the genocide that they faced with Hitler, him taking Charlie and her sister to America to escape the impending war and how he rebuilt himself when he got to America.

Favorite part...
"Don't say anything." I whispered. "Don't even breath. That's a grizzly bear. Oh my God, he's getting closer." Instead of looking frightened, the man holding me laughed. "Why are you laughing? Are you insane?"
"A grizzly bear? You hear a grizzly bear? You think you don't need me? That's the snowplow, you ninny."

When dashing Palm Beach socialite Jack Morgan appears to have died in a suicidal car crash, his grown daughters, “Charlie” and Amelia, are abruptly severed from the life they have always known. Grief-stricken, Charlie soon discovers their father left them nothing – the limitless luxury she and her sister grew up with had all been paid for by the not-so-grieving Widow Morgan, who cuts them off after a few months. Pampered ingenue Charlie is thrust into a hard new reality, with no job experience and few skills, and with her sister now in an expensive nursing home after suffering a total melt-down.

Only Raul Francesco, a handsome young Latino lawyer, volunteers to help, but he seems as intent on seducing her as he is encouraging her to investigate her father’s apparent suicide. In the racially segregated, unimaginably wealthy circles Charlie is used to, a smoldering romance with Raul could spell trouble. Even so, the more Charlie learns about her father’s mysterious past, the more disturbing – and dangerous – her questions become. Her pursuit of the truth, and financial security for Amelia and herself, set in the social context of the early 1960's, will take her to a place well beyond her expectations.

Lisa April Smith has written a complex tale of intrigue and insight, one that spans half a world and reveals that life can be anything but what it seems.

I read and loved Lisa Smith's first novel, Dangerous Lies. Frankly, I was wondering if she would be able to maintain the level of writing in future books. When your first book is a 5 star read, it is hard to go up. Ms. Smith easily handled it. I was engrossed from the beginning of Exceeding Expectations. Ms Smith writes well thought out stories. I believe she researches and knows her subject matter. She brings to the shelf a book she can be proud of and one we can get lost in. Exceeding Expectations does exactly that. If you like a thrilling read pick up this book. Ms Smith handled writing a story that goes from one location to another, one generation to another without dropping the ball. I am a person who looks at the cover for first indication as to my level of interest. I'm not fond of the cover, although I do understand's relevance. If you are also not fond of the cover, remember to not judge a book by it's cover, even if it fits. Which it does in the way that art is involved in this story, bad art by a man who hides his true identity from everyone. Perhaps even his self, as I imagine each time he is reinventing himself he is losing more of who he is. An intriguing thought. Perhaps one that will become more apparent in the sequel to this book. A sequel I am greatly anticipating.

Jack Morgan begins the story by staging his own suicide. His daughter Charlie is determined to find out the truth in this fiction book, EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS by author Lisa April Smith.

With a Palm Beach socialite step-mother, too busy keeping up appearances and a sister in a mental hospital, Charlie is left to find out why her father could do such a thing. During the story we are taken on flash backs of her father’s playboy life in the art world of Paris where he meets plenty of women including Charlie’s mother. I like the way the author went back and forth from both times and filled in the blanks to all the questions I had. This book exceeded my expectations and I am awaiting the second book to the series PARADISE MISPLACED. This book was received for the purpose of an honest review.

This is the second book I have read by Lisa April Smith and I loved them both. Her books always have strong, beautiful, independent women and very handsome men in them. This story is set in the early 1960's and I love this era. It moves between Paris and Palm Beach, Florida which is interesting by itself if you love history. This book has it all! It has romance, mystery, sex, and crime. Lisa April Smith has created a story that you will not be able to put down. The characters have depth and the scenery is wonderful! It will also keep you guessing through the entire book and surprise you in the end. I believe that the book was properly named, because it did exceed my expectations!

I wasn't quite sure what to make of this story initially but the two stories quickly drew me in. Charlotte, a well to do college graduate with a penchant for living off of her father's money, suddenly discovers that she and her sister are penniless when her father commits suicide in the early 1960s. Or so she thinks. The second story tells the backstory of her father's life in Paris where he meets Charlotte's mother and the years that follow. I found myself really enjoying Charlotte's growth from a self-indulgent girl to a self-sufficient young woman who must fend for herself and the ones she loves in a white christian man's world.

Disappointing!!!

This was the first book I read by Lisa April Smith and unfortunately I was hard pressed to even rate this title with a 2 and not a win. While the subject matter of the book could have worked, the author had too many stories going on. And as if that wasn't enough, the characters were mean and nasty people I would not like to have as friends. I just realized that there is a sequel to this book. While I generally love sequels and series, I'm not sure I am going to read a sequel to a book that I rated so low.

This was the first book I've read by this author, Lisa April Smith. But I have to say, it was a fun and bumpy ride. I struggled to put the book down once I started reading it. Therefore, not much work got done at my house the last two days.

This book has mystery, romance, suspense, a few twists and turns on that bumpy road to the end. And what a great surprise ending. Just the way I love my mysteries with "Surprise Endings!!!"

This was named to "Top Twelve of 2012." The sequel, "Paradise Misplaced," recently launched, is also garnering fabulous reviews. So, if you haven't read EE, dear readers, what are you waiting for? Lisa

3 Stars for me!

My rating range of this story... 2 - 4 Stars
If significant, why? The h and her mother and father are not very likeable.

Main Character Ratings...
H = 8/10
h = 3/10

Narrator Rating(s)
M = n/a
F = 8/10
If below 5/10,why?

Was cheating involved? Yes and No (h) - they were technically broken up because the h is a selfish and unreasonable person.
Any major triggers to be aware of? No

If Comedy... Type? n/a
Genuinely Funny
Cringe Inducing
Just No!

Angst Level? Moderate
Light, Moderate, Heavy or Please Stop
3 Stars for me!

Internal Monolog? Moderate
Light, Moderate, Heavy or Please Stop

Scenes with heat... Yes
What point does it start? 40%
How much of the story? 5%
Anything beyond M/F? No
If yes, explained

Heat Rating... 4/10
Clean or Fade to Black - 1 or 2
Normal to Descriptive 3-5
Detailed Descriptive Sex - 6-7
Um, Wow, Beyond Descriptive Sex - 8 or above

The back story... Read the blurb as it is complicated.

The Romance... None that I could see in either relationship. The mom/dad relationship felt like a business relationship and the H/h was driven by the H and constantly rebuffed by the h.

The drama explosion... There really wasn't one.
Did it feel Real, OK or contrived? n/a
Was it OTT? No
Separation involved? n/a
Was it resolved properly or rushed? Left for book 2.

Final Notes... The h's dad was a piece of work and his daughter absorbed as much as she could. The h's mom was cold and had zero care or interest in her children. The H was a good and caring person who helped the h even as she was treating him horribly. She forced him to drive in a dangerous snow storm instead of staying safely at a home they were visiting.

The ending itself is quite brutal as it details what happened to the mother. Even after all she went through, she was still completely selfish in her thoughts and refused to see her part in the loss of her husband and daughters.

The 3 Stars are due to excellent writing and world building (in this case, two worlds).

HEA or HFN? Who knows
