BOTTOMLAND, A NAME THAT BEGS TO BE READ.
I bought this book because it is a 2017 All Iowa Reads, A March Indie Next Pick, An Amazon Best Book of the Month, and the name "Bottomland" is so interesting and different.
As the story begins, the mother has died. Oldest child, tall Nan, tells her story. She has to be the lady of the house, and mother the three youngest children, three teen age girls. Teenagers can be flighty, hard to keep up with, don't like to be bossed or told what to do. The book is set on an Iowa farm, the time is after the Great War. The family is German, resented by neighbors. The story is told in different voices, all done very well. The writer pulls into readers into the book. Nan tells of the beauty of the countryside, different seasons, and all the hard work need to keep the farm going. Two young girls disappear, Esther, sixteen, Myrtle, fourteen, are gone. Police are called, the area is searched, neighbors scout the countryside. No girls. Farm work is hard, young people want parties, dances, big cities, fun. But are these two kids even alive?
Julius tells his story next. He tells of his leaving Germany, landing in New York City and meeting his wife, Margit, taking advantage of the land grants and moving to Iowa. He works hard, is proud of his farm and his family. He misses Margit, the farm is not the same, life is not the same. Six kids, four girls, two boys, oldest boy is married. He couldn't enlist due to a farm injury. Younger brother, Lee, lied about his age, become a soldier. Myrtle, a beautiful child, is Julius favorite. She looks just like her mother when Mom was young.
Lee tells of his life. He is in France when an explosion occurs. He can't remember what happened. He has been in the hospital for months when he learns of his mother's death. He is released, goes home, then decides to look for his sisters. He goes to Chicago, sleeps in alleys, eats when and where he can, questions characters, searches, searches, searches, then goes home. He and Esther were close.
Ms Hoover does a good job bringing readers into the heads, thoughts and minds of her characters, into their worlds. Life happens, not always the way on wants.
