Set in the mid 1800s, The Hanging Tree is a bittersweet tale of the love between two slaves. It weaves a story that evokes both happiness and sadness with threads of love, loss, superstition and threat. Isaac and Oneesha live on a cotton plantation in Louisiana. They are afforded greater liberty than many of their people, but their lives still fall under the constant shadow of their position as slaves, a shadow that contains much which is fearful and perilous. Savouring fleeting rendezvous during the hours of darkness, they toil through the days and hope that their prayers for freedom will be answered. The Hanging Tree is by one of the most prolific and diverse contemporary authors and displays the power of the written word to stir the soul. It is sure to leave a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of readers. This novella is available in paperback and Kindle formats. This book is about a love story of two slaves and the hardships that they had to go thru. The treatment they suffered did not outweigh the love that they shared. This story is about slavery and life on the plantation where every day was possibly your last day on earth. I will remember Oneesha and Isaac's story for years to come.
This story was spellbinding. It is a fast read. The author bring the characters to life! Incredibly, heartwarming love story of two young, innocent slaves...and turn of events in their short lives.
Author uses (and misuses) certain words over and over again. I feel like even a novice proof reader would have made a big difference.
Story is very predictable. I felt like there really wasn't a point to me finishing it, since the it was so boring, and so obvious. Despite this being a story about sad events in a sad time, I was left feeling nothing, because the characters are very flat.
Before the story the author writes about how it only took him a week and a half to write this. Maybe he should take more time in future writing endeavors to write something a little more compelling.
This is one of the saddest stories of true love I have read. There was not a typical fairytale ending, but still fairy-tale like, the enslaved people's version. Heart break after heart break
I wasn't really sure that I would like this book but in the end stayed up all night to finish reading it. Freedom was all that the slaves dreamed about. This book deals with the injustice of what slaves endured. A thriller and great read. The ending was such a surprise. Will be reading more books by this author.
A love story set to pre Civil War anticipation. I was able to easily learn the characters and follow the dialect. Nicely detailed, yet somewhat still a quick read.
