Remote

Rate this book
Antler steps out of her front door and throws her phone to the ground. She stamps on it. Then she climbs the tallest tree in the park. She doesn't want to be found, not by anyone. Over the course of one autumnal evening, seven teenagers' lives intertwine as they make their way through the park. And everything that seemed normal becomes extraordinary. A play about protest, power and protecting yourself, Remote was commissioned as part of the 2015 National Theatre Connections Festival and proved enormously popular with youth theatres and college companies across the UK.

- Currently rehearsing this play for National Theatre: Connections...
- First up we're using ladders for the tree and it's pretty cool. Someone came up with the idea that the dashed line parts (or 'commentators' as we call them) should wear autumnal reds, oranges and yellows so when they're up the tree they look like leaves :))))
- I'm playing Desk who is my little ikea lad and I'm a little attached to them lmao.
- It's a bit outdated having being written in 2015 but most of it holds up well and I remember when we did our first readthrough I was super taken with the voices as they felt shared and indicative of my own experiences.
- I'm not the biggest fan of the dashed lines (I see what Stef trying) buuuut it leaves the play feeling a little stilted and disjointed if I'm honest from a silly little actor standpoint especially ig.
- Could definitely lean further into the themes but other than all that, I'm really enjoying working on it :)))))) very grateful also.

I mean, in terms of theatre for high school/young audiences it's not that bad. But that bar is really quite low. I would really like to see more TYA shows like Remote dig a little deeper into their themes and be less reliant on the "evils" of technology.
