Girlfriends and Other Saints: Companions on My Journey of Faith

Rate this book
With wit and wisdom, popular Catholic talk show host Teresa Tomeo shares personal stories about saints—both her "girlfriend" saints, as well as several male saints. She shows us that the saints are alive and well in heaven and are always ready to listen to us and intercede on our behalf. As she relates how these heroes of the faith have worked in her own life, we are encouraged to go to the saints with our own needs. They are our friends and will never betray us or "unfriend" us!Among the saints Teresa shares about are the Blessed Mother, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. John Paul II.

I love Teresa Tomeo, but I couldn't connect with this book. I tried to force myself to read it, started skimming and ultimately gave up.

Couple notes: In the introduction, she talks about how she is unaware of any other book that presents the saints as relate-able friends. I found this odd because I've read several other books (usually memoirs or conversion stories) that had this element. I think Teresa even submitted forwards/essays for some of them.

Her main point seemed to be that we should develop relationships with saints like we have with a friend we call at 4am. The problem is that I don't have any friends I call at 4am! Even if my house were on fire, I'd call the fire department and tell my friends about it in the morning. She assumed the reader has these codependent relationships that I abhor. It was like trying to explain God as a loving father to someone who never experienced a loving parent. Her big analogy didn't work with me.

I'm a very emotionally stable, independant and formal person by nature. I don't think there is anyone I "have to" talk to everyday, although I do talk to my husband and small children daily. I talk to my mom once every couple weeks. I don't seek out intimate one-on-one relationships, but prefer group events. I hate when people address me as "hey girl" or other slang terms that are suppose to foster friendship, or at least mimic some version of friendship. Somehow people think casual (ie no rules/manners) equals a deep friendship. In my mind, it just seems lazy and disrespectful. We should treat our friends better than strangers, not the other way around.

Anyway, that is just me and my personality. A lack of formal manners is a big trigger for me. I may well be making a mountain out of a mole hill. Other people may read this book and have no idea what I'm ranting about. I'm sure there are people that will connect with the book and love it. Probably those people who call "good friends" at 4am and talk to their mom multiple times a day. It wasn't my cup of tea though.

As a Catholic woman, as a modern woman, I truly admire Teresa Tomeo. I have heard her many times on EWTN, and am in awe of her witness to the Truth. I have read other books by Catholic women, and have always learned something, and I am always looking to learn more about my beautiful faith. In this book, Teresa helps us to learn how the many saints have actually helped her on this journey of life, and how they are there for all of us. I have post-its on many pages, and highlighted phrases, that I hope to share with the women's group in my parish. This is an easy book to read, but one that you will be able to recommend to your friends.

Like other Teresa Tomeo books this one was real, understandable i.e. accessible. Her stories allow the reader to relate and incorporate the material into one's own life.

Teresa Tomeo’s spiritual writing has a style all its own; she’s funny without being shallow and she doesn’t hesitate to tell it like it is. Best of all, you don’t need a degree in Sacred Theology to benefit from her books.

I enjoy Teresa Tomeo’s books for women because she blends the lives of the saints with our everyday lives.
