The Point Between

Rate this book
It’s hard to tell fact from fiction, especially when you’re a ghost …

Bestselling mystery novelist Lily Harrington has been found hanging in her home in the tiny, oddball haven of Point Roberts, Washington, and all signs point to suicide. Worried the truth will be buried with her, Lily teams up with Marcus Mantova, the sexy detective of her novels, to influence the investigation and catch her killer. Yet no sooner has Lily come to terms with the existence of Marcus, the womanizing egomaniac she had thought a product of her imagination, than dead Whatcom County detective Penelope Winters also worms her way onto the case. Lies, frauds, and competing agendas take Lily on a roller-coaster ride over heaven and earth until, at last, she discovers the truth and another chance at life.

Author M. A. Demers returns to the world of fiction with an exploration of the nature of creativity, and continues her examination of the interrelationship between the spirit and physical worlds, rebirth, and the journey we take to get there. Darkly humorous yet lighter than her first mystery novel, “Baby Jane,” “The Point Between” is in equal measure funny, thought-provoking, poignant, and suspenseful.

M. A. Demers is a freelance writer, editor, creative consultant and fine art photographer based near Vancouver, British Columbia.

Prior to publishing her first novel, Baby Jane, Demers wrote almost exclusively for the film industry, including the ghostwriting of production notes for over 30 major motion pictures. She is a screenwriter with, to date, six spec and four commissioned scripts, one optioned documentary project, and was the unaccredited story editor on the award-winning MOW A Cooler Climate, starring Sally Field and Judy Davis. On the photography side, Demers began her career in the late 1980s in Edmonton where she exhibited in several solo and group shows including at the Fringe Festival, The Works art festival, and with Celebration of Women in the Arts; she also took on small commercial assignments and acted as a creative consultant on other artists' projects. In 1992 she moved to London, England, where out of necessity she abandoned her photography career though she remained attached to the industry. A solid 4.5 stars for me.
Lily is dead, she investigates her murder from the point between. She has help from characters who should make it complicated but don't. A great idea for a story really well executed. Thank you.

If you're looking for a book that is a very simple and quick read, this book is probably for you. I personally had some difficulty getting into this book initially, but because it was such a simple read, it was very easy to get through. Unfortunately, I found the characters were too superficial and in need of a little more development to make them more interesting and relatable. I also found there were some great potential storylines to develop that were totally missed. Which is a shame, because this book had some potential!

There were some interesting characters in the story that I would of enjoyed knowing more about. Maybe more about how they ended up there, or why they were so unusual. There could of been some really cool storylines if we knew more about each character.

I will give the author another try down the road to see if she does develop her characters, but in the meantime, on to bigger and brighter things!

As a mystery writer I really enjoyed all of the wonderful ideas about the afterlife M.A. Demers had with The Point Between! When Lily Harrington is found hanging in her living room she finds herself a spirit. Now she must figure out how she ended up dead from the other side. This book was a real page turner. I highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Point Between by M.A. Demers is an unusual mystery populated by a dead novelist, one of her characters, and a dead detective.

Lilly Harrington, a well-loved author for her mystery/romance novels, is discovered hanging in what looks like a suicide. A very confused Lily finds herself at the crime scene unable to communicate with the detective and deputy who are present. Marcus Mantova, the detective protagonist in her novels suddenly appears and offers his help. Lily is just trying to make sense of Marcus' appearance when Penelope shows up. Penelope, a real detective murdered on the job, has a lot to say about Marcus--none of it pleasant.

The three ghosts (?) team up to solve Lily's murder. A dark comedy.

I love the cover, but I'm not altogether sure of the book. I was very hesitant after the first few pages, then grew intrigued. It was kind of a see-saw with like and dislike--now, I do; now, I don't.

The idea of ghost detectives appeals to me, though.

If you enjoy your murder mystery books with dark humour then this book is for you. The Point Between is a refreshing and quirky metaphysical murder mystery that had me laughing time after time. What a great concept for a story the author created. Lily Harrington was an award winning, best selling crime novelist, but now she can see herself dead and she has no recollection of how it happened. She is determined to investigate her own demise with the help of a couple of 'friends' she had picked up on the way.
From the first chapter I felt that this book was going to be right up my street and it didn't disappoint. M.A. Demers kept me throughly entertained with banter and embarrassing situations that just continued throughout the whole novel as well as a super mystery to solve. Love the book cover too.
I wish to thank TBC on FB for allowing me to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun read, an unexpected opening chapter and one specific unique visual (I won't spoil it by sharing what it was) in the beginning hooked me right away. I loved how Demers played with two genres: mystery and metaphysical. That's not a usual combination. Quirky characters, unexpected story twists, and a surprise ending make it easy for me to give this book a five star rating. I was actually surprised at the response (and review) of a recent reader. I absorb mysteries, they are my favourite reading material and The Point Between is a book I'm planning on buying as a gift for several friends. Give a go, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks to TBC for the copy.

I learned a bit of Geography whilst reading this book as I did not know where Point Roberts is and looked it up on Google maps. This was a light read for me, M.A. Demers did the mixing of the mystery and the metaphysical part very well. I did not know whom to suspect as the killer and was surprised when it was revealed. I will recommend this book as a holiday read. When I now think back to the book it was actually a funny story. It would be really nice if ghosts could help in real life with solving crimes.

The Point Between

What a great concept for a book 'It's hard to tell fact from fiction, especially when you're a ghost...'
I had great fun reading this book as the author explored the mix of mystery and metaphysical worlds colliding. I really loved the main character Lilly and the quirkiness of her and some of the other characters made this a great read for me. I would really recommend taking a look at this book, you won't be disappointed!
Many thanks to the author and TBC for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 4* from me!

Based in my little corner of the world, The Point Between is well written, gets you thinking, are our thought really our own, or is some other power getting in our heads. Loved all the local references. Real characters you can believe in, some you seem to really know. hmm do I? Some of out funny quirks are mentioned, we do have a number of them.

I just couldn't get into this book, I had to force myself to read as much as I had did. The characters were underdeveloped and it is done by the main character looking down on her investigation after she was dead. The extended characters had no real back story and seem to come out of no where. This book had some great potential if it was developed further.
