Michael and Cecelia, friends and schoolmates, were as excited as everyone else in the Swedish town of Nordvick because of the mysterious theft of a large sum of money from the post office, located in the wing of the old castle. Of more immediate concern to them, however, was the weird, luminous figure they saw in the dark castle hall late one night. Surely it must be the ghost that, as everyone knew, had haunted the castle since the seventeenth century! But what was Bertil Dal, the unbearably arrogant new boy at school, doing outside the castle immediately thereafter?
Karin Inez Maria Anckarsvärd became a student in Stockholm in 1934. She graduated as a secretary and then worked as a medical secretary for a few years. In 1952 her debut novel was Bonifacius den gröne (Bonifacius the Green), a playful book about two children and a dragon.
I was so pleasantly surprised at this little mystery from years back. It has these universal kid dilemmas that kids of today can easily relate to. The mystery aspect of the story really is engrossing AND you get a little Swedish culture thrown in which makes it interesting. I'm glad I didn't weed this from the library!
