Chance, a Stealth Ops Specialist, is visiting his friend, and SOS co-worker, Nova. Nova and his fiancée, Molly (see book three), are getting married and Chance is the best man. Chance, suffering from PTSD, feels as though, no matter how much he would like to have one, he can't have a relationship due to his struggles. Molly warns him that the B&B, formerly the McGregor mansion, is haunted, and the rumors say Jillian's new house is too. *cue eerie music*
Jillian, Molly's best friend and maid of honor, is excited to be moving into her new house. Chance has offered to help, as Nova is unable to get away for a while. When Chance arrives, finding Jillian in an unexplainable, and dangerous, situation, he rescues her, then proceeds to ruin those good guy points by making some uncomplimentary observations. *stop talking, stop talking now* Jillian, though reluctant at first, agrees as she could use the help. One of those reasons being that, along with being in the wedding, she's also the wedding planner, a realtor, and trying to get her new house renovated. As they start unloading Jillian's things, neither can deny the strong attraction between them.
As incidents continue to occur, some harmless, others not, Chance is determined to keep Jillian safe, while at the same time trying to not get too attached. He's worried that while in the grasp of a PTSD episode, he could unintentionally hurt Jillian. But every day he spends with her as they investigate the past,
he's finding it harder to stick with his "this is only temporary" mantra.
Can Chance protect Jillian? Will Jillian ever discover who is behind all these incidents? What connection is there between Jillian and the history of her new house? Will Chance realize he's not happy only being with Jillian in a temporary capacity before it's too late? Can he and Jillian have a HEA?

While this is the fifth book in the Devil's Shroud series, I never once felt lost having only read this book and book one. Yes, previous characters were either mentioned or are a part of this story, but I was easily able to follow along as Chance and Jillian were the author's main focus.
