Very good book. I loved going back to Cape Churn. In this book, Chance McCall has arrived to serve as best man at his friend Nova's (Deadly Liaisons) wedding. He is also looking forward to a little down time after his latest mission. Jillian is the bride's best friend and maid of honor and wedding planner, as well as a busy real estate agent. Jillian has also just purchased a rundown Victorian house that she is renovating. The rumor is that it is haunted, but she doesn't believe in ghosts. But when strange things begin to happen, Chance is there to help her.

I enjoyed the relationship that built between Chance and Jillian. It got off to a slightly rocky start when Chance rescued her from a risky situation then proceeds to say some stupid things. Though she is reluctant to accept his help because of it, they manage to work together fairly well. Neither can deny that there is a strong attraction between them. As each incident happens, Chance becomes more determined to protect her. He's also tries to keep from getting too close, as he feels his PTSD makes him unsuitable for a relationship. Jillian is stubborn and independent, but finds herself willing to lean on Chance when she needs to. As she falls for him, she'd like to help him through his issues if only he would let her. Jillian also has some problems of her own to work through. Nearly losing Jillian at the end shows Chance that life without her was unthinkable and that he would find a way to overcome his problems. I loved the scene at Nova and Molly's wedding as the couples from the previous books made an appearance, and their assistance with helping Chance make a decision.

The suspense of the story is fantastic. The book begins with the story of one of the previous residents of Jillian's house. Julia is a little girl who disappears on her way home from school and reappears thirty days later with no memory of where she's been or what happened to her. She and her mother pack up and leave, with no one hearing from them again. Seventeen years later, Jillian has bought the house and is renovating it. Some people tell her it is haunted, and others that it isn't. When strange things start to happen, such as vandalism and accidents, she and Chance are determined to find out why and who. As they dig into the house's past, the attacks become more violent, leading them to believe that they are getting closer. The final confrontation reveals a secret that wasn't really a surprise, however, the truth of what really happened seventeen years earlier was unexpected. The scene on the cliff was intense. I loved Jillian ability to think under pressure and find a way to help Chance find her.

**4.5 Stars**

Chance, a Stealth Ops Specialist, is visiting his friend, and SOS co-worker, Nova. Nova and his fiancée, Molly (see book three), are getting married and Chance is the best man. Chance, suffering from PTSD, feels as though, no matter how much he would like to have one, he can't have a relationship due to his struggles. Molly warns him that the B&B, formerly the McGregor mansion, is haunted, and the rumors say Jillian's new house is too. *cue eerie music*

Jillian, Molly's best friend and maid of honor, is excited to be moving into her new house. Chance has offered to help, as Nova is unable to get away for a while. When Chance arrives, finding Jillian in an unexplainable, and dangerous, situation, he rescues her, then proceeds to ruin those good guy points by making some uncomplimentary observations. *stop talking, stop talking now* Jillian, though reluctant at first, agrees as she could use the help. One of those reasons being that, along with being in the wedding, she's also the wedding planner, a realtor, and trying to get her new house renovated. As they start unloading Jillian's things, neither can deny the strong attraction between them.

As incidents continue to occur, some harmless, others not, Chance is determined to keep Jillian safe, while at the same time trying to not get too attached. He's worried that while in the grasp of a PTSD episode, he could unintentionally hurt Jillian. But every day he spends with her as they investigate the past,
he's finding it harder to stick with his "this is only temporary" mantra.

Can Chance protect Jillian? Will Jillian ever discover who is behind all these incidents? What connection is there between Jillian and the history of her new house? Will Chance realize he's not happy only being with Jillian in a temporary capacity before it's too late? Can he and Jillian have a HEA?

One-click now to find out the truth behind all the secrets regarding the past and watch as Chance and Jillian fall in love. While this is the fifth book in the Devil's Shroud series, I never once felt lost having only read this book and book one. Yes, previous characters were either mentioned or are a part of this story, but I was easily able to follow along as Chance and Jillian were the author's main focus.

Book 5 of the Devil's Shroud takes you back to Cape Churn where we follow the live of Jillian Taylor. Jillian is the good friend of Molly McGregor and is assisting her as maid of honor and wedding planner to Molly and Nova's wedding. Nova's friend and SOS (stealth Ops Specialist) friend/co-worker Chance McCall is in town to serve as best man.

Chance is suffering some PTSD from his last mission with the service prior to his employment with SOS and Jillian has taken on more than she can chew with the purchase of a Victorian home that needs major restoration and has been vacant for over a decade. Chance and Jillian definitely have heat factor and play off each other well, but they also have their own shields up as defense mechanisms.

Chance is scared to let anyone in and is focused on his career, and Jillian is trying to get herself settled in her home. As mysterious incidents begin to take place at the home Jillian shares and then start to happen throughout and directed at Jillian, Chance has no choice but to become more involved.

The storyline had me guessing throughout and while some of it was predictable, other pieces of the story had you guessing until the end. What I would have liked to see from this story- More explanation as to how the person pulled off the incidents, etc. Also I would have liked a little more of an epilogue about the characters and where they are a little bit in the future. What would I like to see next from this series- Royce's story. I think the big boss man has a good story that would be great to read.

This was a great story!! I really enjoyed reading it and the characters. There are some definite twists in this story and you don't find out for sure until the end of the book what is going on and why but some of the parts were a little predictable for me. It didn't detract from the story at all and it was very well. I was just able to pick up on the clues the first time around. Jillian and Chance are well written characters and I loved their personalities. I loved getting to see some of the old characters and being back in the town. This is a great little series. It didn't take me long to read it and once I started I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next and how things were going to go down. The flow and pace of the story are really good. It keeps you engaged with the relationship and the action the whole time. Nothing felt slow or rushed at any point in the book for me. There are some definite cute parts along with everything else going on in the story. I loved the interaction and back and forth between Jillian and Chance. This story was well done and I really enjoyed reading it. I'm looking forward to more in this series.
This story is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone novel. You do get to see some previous characters but nothing that will detract or really make you feel like you are missing something. If you have read the others, it's always nice to check in on past characters and see where they are now.

Jillian Taylor, real estate agent and wedding planner, is in charge of planning her good friend's Molly and Nova's wedding in he little town of Cape Churn, Oregon. Chance McCall is Nova's best man and a fellow agent as a Stealth Operations Specialist (SOS). Jill has purchased a fixer-upper house that has sat empty for the pas seventeen years. Most everyone in the community says it's haunted because a little girl who lived there disappeared one day and then showed up a month later and didn't remember what happened to her. Serious and dangerous accidents start happening and Chance wants to protect her. Jill is strong-willed and independent, Chance is cautious and still suffers from PTSD from his former Army Ranger days. It is intriguing and interesting to see how their relationship develops through all these events. I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend reading the entire series.

Predictable. I knew from starting who would Jillian turn out to be but Jillian comes to know the truth only towards the end. The motive of the person behind everything was really lame.

In book five of the Devil’s Shroud series, Chance McCall is a former Army Ranger and suffering from a bad case of PTSD. His work as a Stealth Ops Specialist is top secret, and he’s not looking for a permanent relationship with a woman. On leave to attend his friend’s wedding in a quaint seaside town, he meets Jillian Taylor and his plans for a relaxing vacation quickly unravels.
Jillian is planning her best friend’s wedding, working as a real estate agent, and renovating her new house all at the same time. Even though several townspeople claim ghosts haunt the old Thompson place, she bought the decrepit Victorian house to make it into a real home. After a few accidents, Jillian realizes someone isn’t happy about her plans for the house. Luckily for her, Chance steps in to help. The danger grows as they work together to solve the mystery of a once-missing child and to stop the attacks on Jillian’s life, but the attraction between them sparks hotter than any threat.
What a great story! The romance between Chance and Jillian bloomed fast but felt believable. Both characters have a rough past and are still dealing with their personal traumas, which made them likable and relatable.
I haven’t read the previous books in the series, but some of the past heroes and heroines returned for this book, including Nova and Molly who are getting married. Most of the townspeople are kind, cranky, or kooky, and all of them have their own charm.
Other than a few minor typos, the story was fast paced and well written. I really enjoyed this book and would like to read more from Ms. James.

Jillian Taylor never expected all the trouble that started after she purchased a house in Cape Churn, but sometimes old secrets demand to be revealed. Author Elle James dishes out a suspenseful read in Deadly Obsession, setting the stage for drama with an intense prologue. While the romantic element is definitely present, the author has created an interesting mystery to be solved.

Aside from the prologue, my expectation after reading the first chapter was a storyline featuring a woman who helps a man deal with PTSD. While that is correct to a certain extent, it appears that Jillian is more of a complex character. As events unfold, she and Chase begin investigating the history of the house.

Bad dreams appear to be the key to unlocking the secrets. While I was able to figure out most of the events as the story progressed, there were enough loose ends to keep me interested. I definitely didn’t expect the outcome.

Jillian and Chase have good chemistry together, with their encounters including the right amount of detail. Since this is part of series, the other characters made cameo appearances in this installment. My favorite part of the story has to do with the kittens. It didn’t take too many clues before I caught on to the stray animal connection to the book’s theme.

Overall, it was a good story with all of the trademark Harlequin features — interesting characters, good mix of suspense and romance.

Deadly Obsession
By Elle James
A little girl walks home from school thrilled by the gift her teacher had given her for all of her help. She trips and hits her head and begins to lose consciousness. All of a sudden a blanket is wrapped around her and there is darkness as she is carried. Julie Thompson had been missing for thirty days when she appears back home with no memory of where she was during that time. Fear that Julie will be abducted again and no longer feeling safe, the family moves away.
Flash forward to today. Jillian Taylor is a realtor who moved to Cape Churn after visiting there two years ago. She is also the wedding planner for her friend Molly who is marrying Casanova Velez, and she just bought her first house, a fixer upper. To say that she is busy is an understatement.
Chance McCall has arrived in Cape Churn for a little R & R and to be the best man for his friend Nova Velez. Both men are ex-military and work for Stealth Operations Specialists. Chance also has PTSD which cases him to jump at loud noises and have nightmares. He is working on coping with his PTSD and hopes hanging out at his friend’s wedding will help with the symptoms. To keep himself busy, he offers to help Molly’s friend Jillian move into her new house. Jillian doesn’t like him at their first meeting yet Chance helps her anyway. Chance returns every day to help Jillian.
As Jillian’s is being renovated, strange things begin to happen, vandalism, strange noises, and the feeling that someone is watching her. Daryl Sims is one of the workers helping with the renovations. He has the mental capacity of a five year old and lived with his mother. Daryl also liked to take care of strays much to his mother’s disapproval. Many people want Jillian to give up her new home. She refuses and the strange happenings continue. As the renovations are finished, Jillian moves in but Chance goes with her to keep her safe. Jillian soon begins to have dreams she can’t explain. They begin to investigate what happened to Julia Thompson for thirty days. As they probe deeper, they realize that there is something between them yet are reluctant to delve further. When Mrs. Sims shows up at the house looking for Daryl, Jillian follows her outside to look for him. As they walk through the fog, Jillian soon realizes who she is. Mrs. Sims tries to stop Jillian from exposing her son and the fact that he was the one who had “kidnapped” all those years ago.
I have to say, I really enjoyed this story. It was full of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing throughout. The relationship between Chance and Jillian had a rocky start but soon developed into a love neither saw coming and the chance for a fresh start for both of them. On several occasions I thought I had figured out who was causing Jillian’s problems but Ms James stumped me at every turn. I was surprised by the ending, didn’t see that resolution coming. I so enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading other books in this series. I highly recommend this book.

I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review and here it is: 4 stars.

Chance McCall arrives in the small town of Cape Churn, on the Oregon coast, to serve as best man at his friend and fellow Stealth Ops Specialist Nova's wedding to Molly, owner of the B&B where the wedding will take place (Deadly Liasons). Chance is hoping for a little down-time, an opportunity to get the time and space to deal with the PTSD he's been suffering through for a year--both awake and asleep, with flashbacks and violent nightmares. But his plans for a laid-back vacation are derailed by Jillian Taylor, who is a local realtor, the maid of honor, the wedding planner, and, as if that isn't enough irons in the fire, she's also recently purchased an old Victorian house on the outskirts of town that is being renovated. The house has stood vacant for 17 years, there have been persistent rumors in town that the place is haunted, and the renovations are taking longer and costing more than she ever anticipated. Rumor also has it that there may be some connection to the mysterious disappearance of a 10-year-old girl almost two decades earlier as she was walking home from school. She reappeared, unharmed, 30 days later with absolutely no memory of where she'd been.

While checking in at her house, Jillian hears what sounds like a mewling kitten and follows the sound to the dark, dank and creepy basement when suddenly the single lightbulb goes out, she hears the basement door slam and she passes old cold. Back at the B&B, Molly and Nova are wondering where Jillian is and they send Chance out to find her, since the old house is far enough off the beaten track it has no cell service. After searching everywhere, Chance finally finds Jillian unconscious in the basement--the light had been turned off and the door had been latched from the outside. And so begins a series of mysterious, suspicious and dangerous occurrences centered around the old Victorian house and Jillian--vandalism of the house and Chance's rental car, boulders dropping off hillsides directly in their path in the fog, and a clear attempt to kill Jillian when a truck t-bones her car, backs up and does it again. As the suspense builds, so to does the relationship between Jillian and Chance, although their relationship becomes secondary to the mystery of who is behind the attempts on Jillian's life and why she's been targeted. There is certainly no shortage of possible suspects.

This is another well-written and intriguing novel by Ms. James, that at times almost seems to border on the paranormal, and my only complaint is that I wish that a little more time had been spent on the romance between Jillian and Chance.

Okay so I'm starting off with how much I love this author! Every book I have ever read from her was very good! I know if I see her name on it, I have to buy it. lol.... Okay now onto the book :)

It was a very Good Book, Quick and Easy read. I love old Victorian homes in spooky places so I loved the set up from the beginning! I loved Chance♡ He has been one of my favorite characters in this book! I like how this book was different. SPOILERS********* PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! :) I feel it was different because in all of the harlequins I've read someone always dies or went through something traumatic.... with that being said I have my pros and cons on that.. pro it made the story different which I liked, con I wish Julian/Julia would have went through something more traumatic ( no sexual abuse or anything like that ) rather then just hitting her head and forgetting who she was or where she was... It would have made the story more intense in the end.. I'm glad they didn't find anyone dead in the yard and I'm glad Mrs. Sims lived and went to jail instead of dying from her fall.... They Always die when they fall lol so this was different :) I also like that Jillian was a forgiving person and even went to see Mrs. Sims in jail to let her know her son was going to be okay and looked after.... we need more people like that in our real world ♡ The very ending was the typical ending, Guy and Girl get together and lived happily ever after :)

I'm wondering if another book will come out in the series so we can find out how Jillian gets along with her real dad... if not that's disappointing for me, I would like to know how their relationship went before the book ended... With that being said, it was another Great book by Elle James ♡ Can't wait until her next book is out! :)

Haunted mystery, life threatening incidents, while the best man and maid of honor find themselves falling hard, and fast, despite the odds against them.
I liked the setting of the story, the aery, murky, mysterious house, a place people believed was haunted. The mystery behind the dangerous attempts towards Jillian's life bring tension, and fear. The odd disappearance of the young girl long time ago seems somehow being connected to the current events.
The town seems charming, the folks there protective of each other, and in two camps, when it comes to the house Jillian is making to be her home.
The suspense does feel a little predictable, it didn't take me long to figure the whole mystery out, but it was still entertaining to read.
The attraction between Jillian and Chance is instant, yet believable. I liked them together, they are compatible, good together, they not only make a great investigative team, they have a tune in-between them, that is enjoyable, likable, and compelling. I like it when the conflict between the couple isn't something they are self creating, but more of an outside element, or set of circumstances.
I think this is one of those stories, that could have greatly benefited from an epilogue, a little more rounded ending to bring fuller closure to the tale.
Mystical history of a house, puzzling, perilous events, adventurous, attractive couple, trying to solve the enigma, and keep each other at the arm's length, because the relationship is the last thing either of them are looking for right now - great entertainment!

This book had twist and turns that I never saw coming. It had nonstop action, and the suspense was perfect. This is one of those book that you just can't put down until the last page.

Jillian has been a Real estate agent for years. For the first time she is buying her first home. The house has set empty for 17 years. The town says it's haunted. I thought with it being October, it was the perfect time to read a book like this. In parts of the story it does have a creepy feel to it.

Jillian hires contractors to start remodeling the house. Shortly after is when the attacks start. It is clear that someone wants to scare Jillian away. She does not believe in ghost. Besides ghost don't vandalize a house with spray paint, or run you off the road.

Jillian is also the wedding planner for her best friend's wedding. Chase is the best man. The sparks are there between them. I love the banter back it forth. It was entertaining. Jillian found kittens when she moved into her home. Chase, and Jillian named them Jake, and Jill if that tells you anything about the Hero, and Heroine. When Jillian became a target, Chase went into protective mode. he had been in the Army, and had been deployed a few times. He went to Cape Cod for his best friend's wedding, and to rest, and wind down from his last deployment. There was no way he was going to let Jillian face this alone. The two work together to uncover the mystery. WOW, what a mystery it turns out to be. Excellent book!

4 1/2 STARS!

In Book 5 of the Devil's Shroud series, we head back to Cape Churn, Oregon to get Realtor Jillian's story. This book grabs your attention from the start and keeps you guessing to see who is up to no good throughout. There are a couple of mysteries playing out, along with some sexy attraction that makes it a quick read, and makes you want more!

Chance McCall, fellow Stealth Ops Specialist, arrives in town to visit and help out if needed before his buddy Nova's wedding to Molly. He's staying at Molly's B & B along with her friend and wedding planner Jillian Taylor.

Chance meets Jillian just as some strange happenings start at the old house she bought and is remodeling. She tells him the locals say it's haunted, but his gut tells him there's more going on than that. As the "accidents" start piling up and endangering Jillian's life, Chance doesn't plan to leave her side. The attraction between them is impossible to ignore ... but can he overcome his past in order to move forward with a future?

It's the wedding that draws both Jillian and Chance to that town. Its the house that makes Jillian want to say in town, its a fixer upper with a bit of a past but that wont stop Jillian from moving in. Chance has a bit of a history and isn't looking for a women but he just can't seem to stay away from Jillian, doesn't help that a series of accidents keep happening around her and that house and it make Chance want to help her.

I can honestly say that I loved this book. One reason is the characters, I love getting to know them and loved that the deeper I go into the book the more I get to know about these two interesting characters. Then there is that mystery and wondering what was going to happen next. I was constantly wondering who the person was who was behind everything that happened. I loved that there was enough hints and stuff to go off of and was so happy to find out that the person who I thought was behind this was the person who was causing the trouble. This book kept me on my toes and I just couldn't put it down. Fantastic book I loved it.

Good suspense! I did guess who the bad guy was and why early. I liked the characters too. This is the 5th book in the Devil's Shroud but the first I have read. It did a good job of telling the story that I did not feel left out.

I do wish it showed a seen with Julie's father at the end. I also don't like all the sex scenes, but that is my taste.

Jillian Taylor sells homes. She is single. She just bought a old house in the woods by it's self that she is hoping to move into soon. She is also planning the wedding of a friend.

Stealth Ops Specialist Chance McCall has come for his friends wedding. He has PSTD. He rescues Jillian from her basement and then around her when other accidents happens. He decides to protect her while he is in town.

Why does someone want to harm Jillian. Is the reason in her old house?

I was given this ebook to read for free by NetGalley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give a honest review of Deadly Obsession.

Jillian is trying to put down roots, and Chance is running from any appearance of roots. He shows up to play best man at a friend's wedding with every intention of leaving immediately after. When he meets Jillian, he is immediately attracted to her but believes himself to damaged for a relationship. Jillian is also pretty independent. As luck would have it, Chance always seems to be in the right place when Jillian needs help. The more the danger increases, the more determined he is to protect her. Jillian wants to help Chase as well- help him work through his PTSD nightmares.

The danger factor is high in this story as is the chemistry. It is pretty easy to connect the dots in the mystery but hard to guess many of the events. Overall, I really enjoyed it despite not having read any other books in this series.

This is Book 5 in the Devil's Shroud Series. This time this is the story of Jillian and Chance.

This book has it all: lots of suspense, action and a wonderful romance. I enjoyed from the very first page until the last one. I read it in one sitting.

Chance McCall is anOps Specialist and arrives to Cape Churn, Oregon to help his friend Nova who is wedding to Molly. He is staying at Molly's Bed and Breakfast. The same place where Jillian Taylor, wedding planner and Molly's friend is staying.

Jillian bought an old house and she is remodeling it and very strange things started to happen. It seems the house is haunted but Chance thinks otherwise.

The chemistry between them is very strong and they cannot avoid it but things won't be easy for them!

very entertaining read! i really enjoyed it!

My Thoughts...
It was a bit of a different kind of read for a HARLEQUIN book. This book was a Romantic Suspense with a few twists and turns to keep us interested in the somewhat strange goings-ons. But in the end everything was ironed out and the mystery was solved.

I was gifted this book from the publisher to read and review. I did not receive any type of compensation for reading and reviewing this book. while I receive free books from publishers and authors I am under no obligation to write a positive review.

Great romance, good suspense.

Deadly Obsession is another great book by Elle James. Her books never disappoint me. This one had a lot of tension, both romantic and whodunit. Jillian and Chance were great together. Although I thought I figured out some parts early I still couldn’t put it down. Turns out I wasn’t right on all counts!

Love reading books like this one day after another!

Back in Cape Churn, Jillian bought the house she's had her eye on for a while. But with the Stealth Op Specialists now staying at the B&B, they are trying to figure out who's involved and then Jillian gets attacked, Chance is there to help her recover and figure out exactly what her nightmares mean.

Great conclusion! Looking forward to reading this one again!

Elle James just never fails when she writes her romantic suspense for Harlequin. This is a book that has it all and then the romance in the book just is a match made in heaven. I found this book to be another page turner and one that I started and didn't put it down till I was done. This is a grand slam for Elle James as it contains everything including a great story!

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. It is a stand alone book with a HEA. I recommend to all lovers of romantic suspense. Jillian and Chance are awesome characters. This story will take you on a adventure ride you wont want to get off. Could not put this book down. I love a hot guy and a strong girl.
