Two unforgettable fan-favorite stories from two stars of Western romance—"First Lady of the West" Linda Lael Miller and USA TODAY bestselling author Maisey Yates A Creed in Stone Creek Linda Lael Miller When single attorney Steven Creed becomes guardian of an orphaned five-year-old boy, he trades his big-city law firm for a ranch near his McKettrick kin in the close-knit community of Stone Creek, Arizona. There he meets his match in beautiful, by-the-book county prosecutor Melissa O'Ballivan. It'll take one grieving little boy, a sweet adopted dog and a woman who never expected to win any man's heart to make this Creed in Stone Creek know he's truly found home. Part Time Cowboy Maisey Yates Sadie Miller isn't expecting any welcome-home parades on her return to Copper Ridge. Least of all from part-time rancher, full-time lawman Eli Garrett. The straitlaced, impossibly hot deputy sheriff glares at her as if she's the same teenage hoodlum who fled town ten years ago. But running from her demons has brought Sadie full circle, ready to make a commitment at last. Not to a man, but to a bed-and-breakfast. On Garrett land. Okay, so her plan has a tiny flaw…
The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane. Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats. Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters. The Cowboy Way: A Creed in Stone Creek by Linda Lael Miller
Steven Creed, a distant cousin of the McKettrick clan from Indian Rock, has adopted five-year-old Matt St. John; and has purchased fifty acres of farm land and the dilapidated house that was part of the original O’Ballivan estate in Stone Creek. Matt’s parents, Zack and Millie St. John, were longtime friends of Steven’s and named him guardian of their son in their Wills. Steven and Matt are starting a new life together, swearing to be “pardners to the end”. In his prior life Steven was a corporate lawyer in Boston, but for the past few years he was with a Denver firm and specialized in criminal law alongside Zack St. John. Steven is financially independent and doesn’t have to work. However, he loves the law and opens a pro-bono public defender’s office in Stone Creek.
Melissa O’Ballivan is the County Prosecutor and dislikes all defense attorneys. That is she did until she and Steven were introduced, and truly the earth moved for both of them. Melissa’s brother Brad loans Steven and Matt his tour bus to live in while their house is being renovated. Brad was a C&W super star until his marriage to Meg McKettrick. Matt makes friends at the day camp and is counting down the days until Stone Creek Rodeo Days parade.
Steven’s father, Davis and step-mother Kim raised the twin cousins Brody and Conner Creed on a ranch in Colorado after their father’s death. Steven spent summers with them growing up. The brothers had a falling out years ago and are not speaking to each other; Conner helps Davis run the ranch and Brody is on the rodeo circuit.
THE COWBOY WAY - A CREED IN STONE CREEK introduces newcomer Steven Creed into the Stone Creek series with an outstanding story that centers on single parenthood, a very lovable little boy and an adopted dog. How could it get any better? Why, by giving Steven an intelligent, loving lady love and lots of new extended family members. Linda Lael Miller creates stories that readers thoroughly enjoy, and satiates the story lines with wonderful characters, great wordplay, and spicy romance. THE COWBOY WAY - A CREED IN STONE CREEK is an excellent book.
Have definitely read both stories already and I seriously loved them both times !!!! Linda's books are truly sweet and unforgettable. I just love them all !!! The way she incorporates the whole family into this series is wonderful and makes you feel like you are part of their lives.
I will go ahead and say that I read and own the Maisey Yates story, so I didn't re-read. However, I did enjoy that book and fully recommend that series.
Ok, so on with the show.
I didn't love it.
I usually don't mind the Creed books, they are a good beach read or mind relaxer but this one had some issues. The characters weren't very developed, there was insta-lust, it seemed slightly old fashioned even though it was modern, there were some major discrepancies , and the biggest issue that Mel and Steven had wasn't really even explored (them fighting for two different sides of the law).
If either character had been better fleshed out and if Melissa had been a better character (imo) then maybe I could've gotten behind this story. As it stands....I'm not feeling it.
Issues by breakdown:
It was formulaic, but that's how these books go, but the problem was that it was sooo formulaic that nothing outstanding or eye catching happened. Frankly, the most interesting thing in this book was Tom and Tessa followed by seeing Brody and Connor.
Matt was way too grown up at the age of five, 'special' 'advanced' or 'genius' standing notwithstanding.
Melissa had two sides. One very annoying, jumps to conclusions, biased, and bitchy lawyer and the second was vulnerable, insecure, scared of commitment, jumps to conclusions woman.
If you love the O'Ballivans and the Creeds, you will most likely like this book. I'm not partial either way but I did enjoy previous ones. This one? Well, read it if you have it but skip it if you don't.

After losing his best friends, Steven Creed took guardianship and adopted their son Matt. Having grown up on a ranch, Steven wanted to start his own legacy. He relocates himself and Matt to Stone Creek Arizona where he can build his ranch, run a law office in town, and raise Matt. Melissa is the county prosicutor and content on being alone. She loves her family and her nieces and nephews. She's not prepared for the connection she feels when she meets Steven and Matt. A Creed in Stone Creek was a great read. I really liked the characters. Especially Matt. He was a funny kid. The writing was great and the book flowed well. It's written in both Melissa and Steven's perspectives.
Part Time Cowboy Maisey Yates
I freaking loved this story. I was laughing out loud through most of the book. The chemistry between Eli and Sadie was off the charts. The was an unexpectedly hot book. Very steamy. I really got emotionally involved in this book. I really hope there will be books featuring secondary characters from Part Time Cowboy. The writing was great and the story flowed well. It's written in both Sadie and Eli's perspectives.
Both stories can be read as standalones. Reviewed on behalf of Once Upon an Alpha.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with this title. Miller adds another great family to her Creed Legacy and Yates begins putting together a new life for three orphan siblings surviving on their parent's ranch in Copper Ridge.
Both stories use friends and family to bring a sense of community. They are filled with reality and wonder. These are the kinds of stories that you can believe just might happen to you.
Both of these books are so worth reading. When I started reading the second one, Part time cowboy I realized that I had read it as well as the series a good while ago. It was so good though that I read it again. I highly recommend this book.
