Doron makes the connections clear."―Mark Stephens, author of Teaching Yoga
I enjoy yoga as a way to revitalize my body and mind. This book is a wonderful resource for yoga. It gives guidelines to help build success physically, spiritually and emotionally. While doing this it does not give impossible directions. Everything is in simplified format which can be fit into life easily by making as few or as many changes as is desired. I highly recommend this book I was given this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions and words are my own.
3.5 overall.....I would rate it a 4-4.5 for the yoga section and a 3-3.5 for the rest of it. Very informative overall, but I have read stronger examples of this topic. Worth it to pick it up from the library and read the sections that interest you-it is well-organized.
This was a very easy to read guidebook about yoga. I picked it up in the library's new book shelf. The book covers yoga, a healthy lifestyle, meditation and eating. The key word is flexitarian because the author encourages readers to figure out their own path. Hanover also has some well written descriptions of yoga poses and warm ups that I started to use everyday. I will be using this book as a guide.
I have only recently come to the world of yoga practice, and I will admit I am more in the physical aspect rather than the spiritual part. I've been reading about yoga everywhere I can (online, books, etc) but if I had to choose one book that explains it all, this one would be it.
Doron Hanoch writes with an easy and flowing prose that is totally accessible to the yoga layman/woman. There are explanations in there, about why you should do this and that and not do this or that. Each yoga pose is explained with detailed instructions. I always thought it was best to get teachings about posture and exercise visually, but the author explains and breaks down the moves in a way that can be perfectly assimilated as the instructions are clear and don't use big words like many yoga teachers tend to use (for example, when I was starting, I would hear "chaturanga down..." and would already be lost because I wouldn't remember off the top of my head what this meant. Doron Hanoch breaks it down for you, explains how to chaturanga step by step, so you're never lost.) The sequence of yoga routines he offers is accompanied by clear and explicit diagrams so it is really fabulous to follow.
Not only the physical yoga practice is explained, but this one is an all-rounder. Health, nutrition, state of mind: it is all there.
I was however extremely impressed with the Pranayama section, about breathing techniques. You always hear yoga promotes good breathing that is beneficial for your body. But how, exactly? Unless you have a yogi teaching you, this aspect of the practice is pretty much unavailable. But not here - breathing techniques are carefully described as to the hows and whys and then the explanations allow you to focus on them one by one to achieve the end result.
Definitely THE book I would recommend for yoga enthusiasts, and especially beginners because this is the all-rounder they will need to get started and practice yoga as it should.
This is a very earnest book. The author definitely put a lot of thought into how he would lay out his process to living a yogic life. Is it very different from other yoga books? Not really. There is definitely that very typical "yoga tone" that comes through in the writing. And it includes most of the same poses that you'll see in other yoga books. This book is nice in that some of the modifications actually get their own pictures, though none of the standing poses do. There is the addition of the doshas which is nice, but the discussion of them is super basic. This book does also include meditation and eating techniques so it really does encompass the whole idea of a Yoga Lifestyle. Will non-yoga-practioners benefit from this book? Maybe. But I think a basic understanding of yoga (all the branches, not just asana (movement)) will be more helpful. The pictures are as helpful as possible but nothing beats going to a live class with a good teacher (a point that Hanoch does make) Could you get the basic gist of the book just by reading the bullet points at the end of each section? Pretty much. Overall an okay book. It's not really geared toward a yoga neophyte but there are some helpful hints such as recipes. There are quite a few yoga techniques that are renamed as being "Doron" techniques but they're not new or specific to this author.
