The Empire State
A remarkable city once stood on a desert moon between six colony worlds: an entire city contained within a single vast tower. In honour of another great feat of architecture from an earlier age, the human pioneers who built the city christened it the Empire State.
The phrase "once stood" would seem to imply that the city isn't there any more, and until yesterday it wasn't, having been destroyed almost a century ago. Indeed, Bernice Summerfield has reluctantly left behind a Braxiatel Collection in turmoil and launched an expedition to excavate the site of the Empire State, and noted archaeologists like her rarely concern themselves with things that haven't been broken, ruined or lost.
Yet now the Empire State has reappeared as if the last century never happened, and the members of Bernice's expedition have been scattered throughout the city. He has contributed comic strips to Doctor Who Adventures.
Between 2007 and 2009, Robson was the producer of Big Finish's Bernice Summerfield range of products, and has contributed four audio plays to the series. All hail Irving Braxiatel as the galactic hide and seek champion who hid as a precious stone for nearly all human history. (Also the fact he was naked at the end whilst arguing with Benny amuses me greatly).

L'ANGOLO BIG FINISH: “THE EMPIRE STATE” (Bernice Summerfield, 7.6)

Una notevole città sorgeva una volta su una luna deserta in mezzo a sei mondi colonizzati: un'intera città contenuta in una singola, vasta torre. In onore di un'altra grande architettura di un'epoca precedente, i pionieri umani che costruirono la città la battezzarono Empire State.
L'espressione “una volta” implicherebbe che la città non sia più lì, e fino a ieri non lo era, essendo stata distrutta quasi un secolo prima. Infatti, Bernice Summerfield ha con riluttanza lasciato una Collezione Braxiatel in tumulto e avviato una spedizione per scavare il sito dell'Empire State, e famosi archeologi come lei raramente si interessano di cose che non sono state rotte, rovinate o perse.
Eppure ora l'Empire State è riapparso come se l'ultimo secolo non fosse mai esistito, e i membri della spedizione di Benny sono sparpagliati per la città. Un membro in particolare è risultato difficile tra trovare, il che è imbarazzante perché Bernice crede che lei sia la chiave per capire cosa sta succedendo all'Empire State – e per salvare la Collezione Braxiatel.

Ed eccoci arrivati al finale di stagione in cui la ricerca di - ehm - “qualcosa” per salvare la Collezione giunge finalmente al nocciolo.
In continuità con The Oracle of Delphi, Benny segue gli indizi trovati in Grecia per cercare la Pietra di Barter, un cristallo che dovrebbe contenere le informazioni che le servono per trovare ciò di cui ha bisogno. Ma la Pietra ha anche altre proprietà, come ad esempio assorbire i poteri di qualcuno per donarli a qualcun altro.
Ed è così che Benny si ritrova in possesso di una sorprendente abilità, e le rovine che stava scavando ritornano improvvisamente allo stato originario, con tanto di abitanti che non si sono accorti di nulla.
Eddie Robson ha inserito in questo episodio un sacco di idee accattivanti, con un bel po' di colpi di scena. Quello che sta succedendo non è immediatamente comprensibile, ma si scopre piano piano dai dialoghi, alcuni dei quali apparentemente banali e non legati alla trama, ma che vanno poi a svolgere una funzione importante, sia all'interno della storia, sia per definire i personaggi, che così assumono un maggiore spessore.
Una menzione particolare va fatta per Maggie Matsumoto, un membro della spedizione di Benny che sembra eluderla, la quale ha un sacco di qualità nascoste e sarà importante in futuro.
Oltre alla trama principale, ci si prende anche il tempo per accennare al tumulto che sta avvenendo in quel momento alla Collezione, tramite alcuni messaggi mandati da Jason, che sono molto utili per contestualizzare di che tipo di minacce si stia effettivamente parlando, specie se non si è letto Collected Works.
Con la sua vena divertente e dinamica, che tuttavia nasconde concetti molto più profondi, questo è decisamente un ottimo episodio che, con il suo finale inaspettato, aprirà le porte per la serie 8.

La stagione 7, anche se non ha proprio avuto quell'episodio “WOW” con i fuochi d'artificio, nel complesso è stata di alta qualità, con una maggiore continuità e coerenza interna. Il cambio di produttore forse ha anche giovato. Comunque, sembra un po' una serie “di passaggio” che fa da ponte tra la 6 e la 8, quindi non vedo l'ora di ascoltare la prossima, che si prospetta decisamente interessante.
