About the author

After an MA in English, Simon Beckett spent several years as a property repairer before a stint teaching in Spain. Back in the UK, he played percussion in several bands. He has been a freelance journalist since 1992, writing for The Times, The Independent on Sunday Review, The Daily Telegraph, The Observer and other major British publications. In 2002, as part of an article on the National Forensic Academy, he visited the Body Farm in Tennessee. This last commission was the inspiration behind the internationally bestselling The Chemistry of Death, which was shortlisted for the CWA's Duncan Lawrie Dagger and has been translated into 21 languages. Simon Beckett is married and lives in Sheffield. The author of six novels, his second David Hunter thriller, Written in Bone, is published as a Bantam paperback in April 2008.

Keine leichte Kost. Das Thema ist an sich schon sehr sensibel - unerfüllter Kinderwunsch.
Ich fand die Geschichte von Kate und Alex sehr spannend, aber ich kann mir auch vorstellen, dass eingefleischte Thrillerfans vielleicht eher enttäuscht sind. Ziemlich lange geht es im Buch nur um Kate und Alex und den Beginn ihrer doch etwas außergewöhnlichen Beziehung. Erst relativ spät entwickelt sich die Geschichte dann in eine Richtung, die zum Thriller "passt"...
Ich fand die Handlung dennoch von Anfang an spannend, da ich die ganze Zeit eine Art Erwartungshaltung hatte. Ich habe immer auf den "Knall" gewartet, der dann irgendwann ja auch kam.
Die Geschichte ist vielleicht nicht hochspannend, aber mir ging sie doch unter die Haut.

This is a book the author first wrote years ago, revised and updated for the digital generation - It is a fast paced and fairly quick read following Kate as she decides she wants a baby - and lands herself in all types of trouble.

It didn't take me long to rocket through this one - it has some intriguing themes about nature v nurture, as Kate goes looking for a suitable donor for insemination, meets a seemingly perfect choice and then...well...things don't go entirely to plan.

I really enjoyed it, some great characters and and some thought provoking strands to the tale with reference to parenthood in all its glory and the choices we make for ourselves in that respect - then it turns into an edge of the seat psychological thriller as Kate begins to realise that her perfect man is not so perfect after all.

The mystery elements are cleverly interwoven into the wider aspects of the story - as those around her get dragged into the maelstrom that Kate's life has become she is having to make some difficult choices, it is utterly riveting in places and builds to a brilliantly tense ending.

Overall really excellent. As good as his later novels? No I'd say not, even with the updates (although I have not read the original work) but when the writer is as good as this one is "not as good" is still pretty darn impressive.

Essendo il primo libro che leggo di questo autore, ho letto il romanzo con il solo fine di godermi una bella storia, senza lasciarmi influenzare da nulla, e posso dire di averlo davvero apprezzato.
La storia, scritta con uno stile di scrittura scorrevole, è capace di dare al lettore un pezzo alla volta del puzzle, accompagnandolo verso la soluzione finale.
Non avendo letto la versione originale del libro non mi sento di fare paragoni, però trovo che l’inserimento di caratteristiche proprie dei nostri tempi, come ad esempio i social media, abbiano reso la storia più “verosimile”, in quanto il tema centrale del libro è più reale di quanto si possa pensare.
Ci chiediamo mai cosa potrebbe succedere dando confidenza ad un completo estraneo?
Questo romanzo è una delle possibili risposte a questa domanda.

Being the first book I read about this author, I read the novel with the purpose of enjoying the story, without letting myself be influenced by anything, and I can say that I really appreciated it.
The story, written with a sliding writing style, is able to give the reader a piece at a time of the puzzle, drive it towards the final solution.
I haven't read the original version of the book so I can't make comparisons, but I find that the insertion of things specific of our times, such as social media, have made the story more "plausible", since the central theme of the book is more real than you might think.
Do we ever wonder what could happen if we give confidence to a complete stranger?
This novel is one of the possible answers to this question.

I shouldn't have read this book. Scary stuff about a woman wanting artificial insemination but rather than do it anonymously, instead, like a proper twat, she puts an advert in a paper. ALARM BELLS anyone? Donor turns out to be a bona fide psycho and the ending is just too awful to even contemplate. Note to self: Must erase from memory. Or, rewind to a simpler time, before I picked this book up.

Negli ultimi tempi mi imbatto spesso nel nome di Simon Beckett. È certamente un autore sulla cresta dell'onda, abbastanza da generare curiosità; per cui, quando si è trattato di scegliere l'opera da recensire, la mia curiosità mi ha lasciato pochi dubbi.
Dannazione.
Questo libro mi ha piuttosto deluso, per vari motivi. In primis avrebbe dovuto essere un thriller, ma lo diventa soltanto nell'ultimo terzo di storia: prima dobbiamo sciropparci l'eterna indecisione della protagonista (con la quale non ho empatizzato), che tergiversa sulle sue decisioni per pagine e pagine e finisce sempre per prendere quella sbagliata. Secondo aspetto, molte cose, a livello narrativo non reggono, e ci sono diversi avvenimenti inverosimili che lasciano alquanto straniti (protagonista cosparsa di benzina che, in una casa in fiamme, ne esce viva; ma non solo questo).
Purtroppo questa storia non riesce a intrigare, si sofferma all'infinito sulla decisione della protagonista sull'eventualità di procedere all'inseminazione artificiale; da chi prendere il seme, finendo poi per fare una scelta totalmente assurda; come conseguenza di questa scelta assurda, un altro tempo infinito per scegliere se tenere il bambino o meno. Tutti i personaggi si comportano in modo strano: la protagonista prende delle decisioni del tutto insensate; la sua migliore amica tutto sembra tranne che la sua migliore amica; il personaggio che dovrebbe essere il "killer" (piuttosto atipico)... beh, lasciamo stare.
L'unica cosa che mi è piaciuta abbastanza sono le riflessioni che scaturiscono nel lettore riguardo l'aborto.
Non c'è coinvolgimento, non c'è modo di appassionarsi nemmeno quando la storia si trasforma (quasi) in un thriller... insomma, mi ha piuttosto deluso. La piacevolezza ha due stelline, non perché non sia scorrevole, ma perché questo romanzo non riesce a coinvolgere né ad appassionare.

Kate è una donna in carriera, che lavora nel campo delle comunicazioni e della pubblicità. La storia ha inizio con la vincita di una commessa che può cambiarle la vita, una commessa vinta a discapito del suo ex fidanzato, impiegato in un'altra azienda. Un altro psicopatico, che ha un evoluzione piuttosto inverosimile. Scottata dall'esperienza precedente con questo ex, Kate non è il tipo di donna che vuole ripetere l'esperienza, ma non nasconde il suo desiderio di fare un figlio.
Ma come avere un figlio senza il rapporto matrimoniale necessario? Kate si imbatte nella risposta del tutto casualmente, su una rivista, e la risposta è... fecondazione assistita. Le strutture che offrono questo servizio si avvalgono di donatori anonimi, ma questo non pare soddisfare Kate. Allora qual è la scelta? Mettere un annuncio sui giornali, sperando che qualche sconosciuto risponda. Lo sconosciuto si presenta e sembra talmente carino da far pensare: "ma davvero c'è bisogno della fecondazione assistita?" Peccato che per giungere a questa conclusione la protagonista abbia bisogno di elucubrazioni infinite che portano il lettore quasi allo sfinimento... come è ovvio che sia, questo sconosciuto si rivelerà tutto meno quello che sembra.
Una domanda sorge spontanea: ma l'adozione? (Ovviamente non sarebbe esistito il libro in questo caso, è soltanto per ironizzare sull'infinito tergiversare di Kate)

Simon Beckett ha attuato un'operazione insolita per uno scrittore della sua portata: è ritornato sui suoi passi. Ha deciso di rimaneggiare un suo vecchio romanzo, per migliorarlo, pur essendo già un bestseller, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1997. A quel tempo, ovviamente, la tecnologia doveva ancora fare i passi da gigante che ha fatto, arrivando a stravolgere le nostre vite: anzi a dettarci nuove regole e a programmare nuovi legami e incontri, anche quelli che credevamo impossibili.
Riprendere un romanzo per attualizzarlo è un'operazione non da poco ed è ciò che ha fatto Simon Beckett, non perché avesse un blocco creativo, ma perché è convinto che ogni cosa possa essere migliorata. La sua operazione è simile a quella già portata a termine, con successo, da quelli che consideriamo i "mostri sacri" o "i grandi autori" della letteratura mondiale.
Il tema principale dell'opera, quello da cui Beckett ha tratto spunto per il suo bestseller, è ancora attualissimo. Anzi lo è diventato forse, se possibile, ancora di più. Tratta di voglia di maternità: un tema che non smette mai di interessare, legato al mondo femminile, ma non privo di interesse per l'universo maschile. Tale tema è ancora attuale anche grazie alle nuove tecnologie e ai progressi scientifici. Non soltanto la scienza, ma anche l'informatica, sono alla base delle scelte della protagonista di DOVE C'È FUMO.
Kate Powell è una donna fiera e indipendente. Non ci sta a farsi schiacciare da un uomo, ma non può fare a meno di commettere l'errore comune alla maggior parte delle donne, quello di innamorarsi dell'uomo sbagliato. Il suo errore lo ha commesso più di una volta e seguire le tracce di fumo diventa il suo obiettivo principale per sopravvivere, per il bene suo e della creatura che porta in grembo e non può fare a meno di amare, anche prima che venga alla luce. Lei, che voleva tanto avere una creatura che le permettesse di formare una famiglia, anche se minima, è disposta a tutto per ottenere ciò che desidera.
La maternità è qualcosa cui non si può rinunciare. Kate non può farla dissolvere come il fumo o nel fumo di un immenso incendio, quello che minaccia la sua esistenza attuale e il suo futuro.
È un bestseller che non risente dei suoi tanti anni di vita. Risulta attuale e perfettamente scritto, grazie alle ottime scelte narrative di Beckett.

I liked this book, found it easy to read and flew through the second half eager to find out what happened.

However, I didn’t find many of the characters likeable or any of the relationships genuine which meant the book lacked authenticity for me. Some of the clues and references in the early stages of the book were not particularly subtle and I would have liked the epilogue to have been a bit longer to tie up some loose ends.

Overall an enjoyable quick read with an interesting thickening plot, although one that I was not that invested in.

Eins von den ganz schlechten Beckett-Büchern. Nach diesem habe ich aufgehört, ihn zu lesen.
Eine junge Frau wünscht sich nichts sehnlicher, als endlich Mutter zu werden. Und gerät natürlich an einen Psycho-Samenspender.
Die Geschichte ist von Anfang bis Ende einfach nur nervig.

Oh well... Ta książka to chyba ostrzeżenie dla przyszłej mnie, że jak nikt mnie nie zechce do 34 rż to muszę pamiętać, żeby się nie bawić w in vitro z nie-tak-randomowym dawcą. Albo jak jednak stwierdzę, że let's do this, to pamiętać, żeby na takim facecie zrobić test poparzeniowy i zobaczyć czy jak się poparzę to będzie wymyślać smarowanie tego wazeliną czy jakimś kremem (tak still się tego czepiam, sorry not sorry, to silniejsze ode mnie i wszystko co złe to wina comedium magicum i wszystkich szczeklików, bochenków i innych robbinsów).

A tak serio, to sama nie wiem co mam myśleć o tej historii. Bo była bardzo ciekawa i na pewno warta przeczytania, ale jednak chyba jeśli chodzi o Becketta to wolę czytać jego kryminały niż thrillery psychologiczne. Chociaż still się dobrze bawiłam i czytało mi się to bardzo szybko i płynnie. Więc no w sumie same plusy. Ale po prostu nie było tego efektu wow i nie siedzę teraz i nie myślę sobie: kurcze, przeczytałabym to znowu choćby teraz zaraz. Kiedyś wrócę sobie do tego jak znajdę czas i chęci, ale no pressure.


(+ w sumie mój problem może być też taki, że wolę czytać książki o czymś z czym na 99, 99% nie ma szans, że mogłabym mieć do czynienia, a tu jednak czytając to widziałam kurde siebie w roli Kate (doslownie gdyby tylko była o 13 lat młodszą i jeszcze nieogarniętą studentką lekarskiego, która się uczepiła tej biednej wazeliny, to kurde byłybyśmy identyczne. I mean poza wyglądem, ale to tam szczegół). W każdym razie przez to nie mogłam się tak w pełni wyluzować przy czytaniu tego i myślę, że jakiekolwiek negatywne emocje są właśnie z tym związane i tylko przez to nie mogę dać 5⭐ (tho może to i dobrze, bo aż dziwnie się patrzy jak większość moich ocen jest ciągle tak wysoka. Tho to nie moja wina, że nie umiem źle oceniać moich papierowych skarbów 🤧))

I was like a rocket reading this one, soon as you really get into it, then it sort of drags you in.

Its a case of nature verses nurture and fits in well with where we are in society today.

Kate wants a baby, doesn't want all the trimmings, so gets Kate looks for a suitable donor for insemination. But as we know with this kind of subject matter, nothing goes to plan.

Is the 'perfect man' whose semen she chose, the 'perfect man' after all?

Kate has to make some choices that are not easy, I wouldn't want to be in her shoes.
Its a case of not all is what it seems, deception comes in many disguises. with riveting dangerous results.

I just read the David Hunter-Books and so this was my first out of the row. I liked it but the beginning was a bit slow and in the end I was so excited and wanted to know what happens but the end by itself was like „ah ok 🤷🏼‍♀️“

Dove c'è fumo non c'è arrosto.
Pensavo di imbattermi finalmente in un bel thriller di un autore relativamente nuovo, una fresca novità nell'ambito di questo genere non sempre facile da gestire, invece mi sono ritrovata a leggere un libro con un'ottima base ma non troppo convincente.
Il serial killer, che di solito di per sé deve fare metà della storia, è un personaggio totalmente fuori contesto.
Kate Powell sembra spinta da chissà quali folli impulsi che la spingono a comportarsi in modo assurdo e si ritrova protagonista di situazioni surreali.
Lo stile non funziona benissimo, e il pasticcio è combinato.

Flammenbrut habe ich jetzt innerhalb von zwei Tage durchgesuchtet. Das Buch war einfach nur der Hammer. Und gegen Ende hin einfach nur noch unfassbar spannend. Für mich persönlich hat alles gestimmt. Ich muss allerdings anmerken, dass es sich nicht um einen reinen Thriller handelt. Gerade die erste Hälfte des Buches ist eher ein Liebesroman, erst gegen Ende wird es dann wirklich spannend. Ob man soetwas lesen möchte ist sicherlich Geschmackssache insbesondere wenn man eigentlich einen Thriller erwartet hat. Mich hat es aber überhaupt nicht gestört, im Gegenteil ich fand es sehr gelungen da ich auch sehr gerne zwischen Genres wechsele.

Beach read, sufficient but not exhilarating. I found the foreshadowing really strange. The whole moths theme suddenly vanished halfway through the book, the constant encounters with fire that are not directly connected to an arsonist are almost supernaturally frequent, the twist was very apparent early on, the protagonist was pretty stupid and the weird homophobic and racist undertones in some scenes were uncomfortable. Ugh.

Simon Beckett po prostu robi to dobrze. Historia jest ciekawa i choć dużo zdradza nam sam opis książki to i tak dzieje się wiele niespodziewanych zwrotów akcji. Książka jest wciągająca i szybko się czyta. Miałam problem z odłożeniem jej dopóki nie skończyłam ostatniej strony.

Una storia di ossessione, violenza e paura ma anche una storia di solitudine, di voglia di maternità e di speranza. Kate Powell è una giovane donna di 34 anni. Affermata nella professione, indipendente, non ha però una relazione sentimentale stabile. Vive una vita molto solitaria, con pochi amici, nessun compagno e la sola compagnia del gatto di casa. Ma l'orologio biologico, si sa, corre senza arrestarsi e Kate sente impellente il bisogno di avere un bambino. Decide, così, nonostante il parere contrario della sua migliore amica Lucy, di pubblicare un annuncio per cercare un donatore di sperma. Tutto più facile; senza implicazioni sentimentali; una semplice trattativa d'affari e nulla più. Conosce così Alex Turner, affascinante psicologo clinico.

"Dove c'è fumo" di Samuel Beckett, edito da Bompiani, è un thriller al cardiopalma che spinge il lettore in un vortice asfissiante di paura e tensione.
Samule Beckett ha rimaneggiato un romanzo scritto sul finire degli anni 90 e ne ha fatto una storia attuale. Una vicenda di solitudine e voglia di maternità da una parte e di follia e solitudine dall'altra.
Un racconto dove l'ossessione la fa da padrona e la violenza non è solo fisica ma anche psicologica e mediatica attraverso l'uso distorto dei social media. Una vicenda ad alta tensione ed attualissima che raggiunge il suo finale in un finale al cardiopalma.

Kate Powell to singielka odnosząca spore sukcesy zawodowe. Twardo stąpa po ziemi i sama lubi o sobie decydować. Patrząc jednak na szczęśliwe życie rodzinne swojej przyjaciółki, sama pragnie zostać matką. Po nieudanym związku nie chce jednak mieć partnera, za to nieoczekiwanie z pomocą przychodzi jej artykuł informujący o sztucznych zapłodnieniach.. Kate postanawia znaleźć dawcę i zamieszcza ogłoszenia. Na jedno z nich odpowiada Alex Turner, który wydaje się być idealnym kandydatem..

"Zimne Ognie" to dobry thriller, jednak polecałabym go czytelnikom, którzy dopiero zaczynają przygodę z tym gatunkiem, lub tym, którzy nie oczekują od takich książek zbyt wiele. A dlaczego? Akcja rozwija się w tej książce bardzo powoli, przyspieszenie następuje dopiero w drugiej połowie książki. Nie każdemu taki zabieg może się więc spodobać. Fabuła nie jest skomplikowana a zakończenie nie powala jakoś szczególnie na kolana, ale pomimo tego jest ciekawe i dla mnie nie było przewidywalne.
Książka sama w sobie nie jest zła, można przeczytać, ale nie jest to coś co na długo pozostanie w pamięci.

Zaznaczę też, że jeśli czytaliście wcześniej książki z cyklu o Davidzie Hunterze, to tutaj nie znajdziecie tego samego Becketta, który napisał "Chemię Śmierci". Można powiedzieć, że Beckket pokazuje tutaj swoją inną twórczą stronę - niekoniecznie gorszą, ale wyraźnie inną. :)

Half contemporary. Half thriller. Great writing.

Story: Kate Powell runs her own publishing company in the middle of a bustling city. She's about to find out if she was selected for a work offer and her main competition is her ex-boyfriend Jack.

Language: medium length chapters. the first half of the book is build up for the thriller in the second half. it's very slow paced to the point where I wasn't even sure if I was reading a thriller book. but the second half speeds up and is full of page turning suspense.

Characters: Kate is young and successful, but has no family, partner or children. Her best friend Lucy has a husband and two young children and adds her opinions into Kate's life and choices at every opportunity. Jack, Kate's ex-boyfriend, is successful and also has a mean streak to him.

I didn't care for the first half very much, but the second half definitely made up for it. Great thrills and ending.

Thriller psychologiczny napisany lata temu przez Becketta - nie liczyłam na wielkie szaleństwo, szczególnie po przeczytaniu kilku opinii znajomych. Nie podejrzewałam jednak, że autor zabierze się za taką tematykę. Pomysł może sam w sobie nie jest zły, ale do mnie to zupełnie nie trafia. Nie posiadam genu odpowiedzialnego za instynkt macierzyński, więc pomysł Kate Powell uważam za bardzo głupi. A do postaci głupich ciężko mi jest wykrzesać jakiekolwiek pozytywne uczucia, więc jakoś specjalnie nie współczułam głównej bohaterce, która z własnej winy ściągnęła na siebie cały bałagan, o którym będziecie mogli przeczytać w tej książce.

Biorąc pod uwagę sytuację i opis z okładki świadczący o tym, że jednak to nie romansidło z happy endem, mniej więcej spodziewałam się takiej właśnie historii. Żadnych specjalnych momentów zaskoczenia nie odnotowano, a szkoda. Mimo to da się spokojnie przez tę historię przebrnąć, nie jest przesadnie męcząca, dlatego ostatecznie oceniam ją na 5/10.

Pozycja zupełnie inna niż pozostałe książki Becketta, które dotychczas czytałam. Historia dosyć mozolnie się rozwija, by nagle wybuchnąć niczym wielokrotnie opisywany ogień pożaru. Kate, atrakcyjna właścicielka agencji PR chce mieć dziecko, nie jest jednak w związku i nie chce zmieniać tego stanu. Dlatego też szuka w tym celu dawcy. Na jej ogłoszenie odpowiada młody, nieśmiały psycholog kliniczny, Alex Turner. Między tym dwojgiem zaczyna rodzić się gorące uczucie, Kate zachodzi w ciążę, gdy tymczasem Alex znika...Okazuje się, że mężczyzna jest schizofrenikiem podszywającym się pod doktora Turnera. Tu wreszcie rozkręca się thrillerowa intryga, która trwa do ostatnich stron powieści. Mamy do czynienia z wrogą kampanią przeciwko Kate, podpaleniami, przetrzymywaniem zakładników oraz śmiercią...Thrillerem bym tego nie nazwała, aczkolwiek jest bardzo dramatycznie i gorąco...

Wow what a great novel! I had read a few other novels by the same author part of a series about a forensic anthropologist. They were good reads but nothing like this!

Part love story, part thriller, part horror story.

Single woman wants a baby and considers sperms donation but doesn't like thought of an anonymous donor. So after discounting thoughts of men she already knew to be the donor, including her best friend's husband she puts an ad in a paper looking for someone to be her donor. She wants to meet them get to know them a bit make sure she likes them and then he donates his seed and she says bye bye to him.

But things do not go to plan she develops feelings for her donor.

And then things spiral. All is not what they seem. Lots of twists and turns.

I can't say anymore without giving too much away. But needless to say I highly recommend this novel!

In fin dei conti, senza poi rivelarci nulla in effetti, Simon Beckett è in grado di solleticare la curiosità del lettore più attento, giocando e allungando la presa su quel famoso e imprescindibile seme del dubbio che non può e non deve mai mancare nel genere in questione. Un dubbio che oscilla tra verità e finzione, torto e ragione fino a spingerci verso una presa di posizione che non sarà mai netta o definitiva, ma preda di un continuo movimento come è, dopotutto, la storia che Beckett ci regala in questo romanzo: una continua evoluzione che sussurra al nostro orecchio e coinvolge ogni senso! »

Kate Powell möchte Single bleiben, aber auf die Erfüllung ihres Kinderwunsches nicht verzichten. Sie entscheidet sich für eine künstliche Befruchtung, gibt eine Anzeige auf, in der sie nach einem Spender sucht, um ihn zumindest einmal kennenzulernen. Alex Turner meldet sich auf die Annonce und obwohl sich Kate lange Zeit dagegen wehrt, verliebt sie sich in den Mann… mehr kann ich ohne Spoiler nicht verraten!

Am Anfang muss ich gestehen war ich etwas enttäuscht: Es passierte nichts Aufregendes! Aber ab der Buchmitte geht es rund! Was bis dahin so plätschernd vor sich hinfloß, rollt dann aber gewaltig los! Die scheinbar seichte erste Buchhälfte war nur ein Anschleichen an eine für die Protagonistin schockierend verlaufende Geschichte.….
