Alyson is a smart, but financially struggling MBA student. Her mother is an alcoholic and Alyson is constantly bailing her out of situations. Alyson’s roommate Ashley is rich, so Alyson lives rent free allowing her to barely survive by working as a waitress while completing her MBA. Ashley enters Alyson in the win a date with Ryker contest because it also includes money with the grand prize. She ends up being one of the ten finalists, and Ryker picks Alyson because she was not a typical Willow Son fan. The date ends up being a staged disaster, with Ryker acting like a jerk for the cameras. And to make matters worse, the dinner is at the restaurant where Alyson works. But something sparks in Ryker and Alyson despite the horrendous staged date.
Eventually, Ryker realizes he doesn’t have to be a jerk and decides to try to make it up to Alyson. Meanwhile, both Alyson’s drunk mother and Ryker’s convict elder brother complicate things. But once Ryker and Alyson drop their guards, they admit that they really do love each other. There is a nice ending with Alyson’s dream MBA project finding a sponsor.
Before the book was published, the author lent me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Like all Karolyn James books, this one needs an editor. The book I was loaned contained several typos, missing words and weird sentences. Not as many as some of her other books, but still enough to be aggravating.
