A vicious killer is on the loose. Their targets are connected, but the motives are unclear. Brought in by a Fortune 500 company to do a simple background check, Private Investigator Burnside is suddenly thrown into the middle of a sea of carnage. And as he moves forward into this harrowing case, his own life is placed in mortal danger.
Desperate to find the culprit before they strike again, Burnside faces his biggest challenge yet, and one in which a single wrong move -- or an ill-timed quip -- could prove to be very deadly.
Filled with unexpected twists and turns, the story focuses on the glitz of the entertainment industry, but goes on to reveal the harsh corruption that lies seething beneath the surface.
Nickel Package embarks on another vivid tour through the eclectic world that is Los Angeles. From the tony corporate suites to the seemingly peaceful middle-class neighborhoods to the gritty urban neighborhoods, the reader is introduced to intriguing new areas and fascinating characters.
And it wouldn't be a Burnside novel if it weren't loaded with irreverent humor! Nickel Package delivers an exciting mystery that is both compelling to follow -- and marvelous to read.

Nickel Package is a worthy addition to the fascinating Burnside Mystery series.
The 6th book in the series follows Burnside on yet another thrill ride across Los Angeles, into the nasty underbelly of the corporate world. This is a classic who-done-it, told in vivid detail, with witty banter and dialogue that crackles.
The plot twists and unexpected surprises keep driving the story forward, and the mystery unfolds in an entertaining and compelling way.
For those who enjoy the works of everyone from Raymond Chandler to Robert B. Parker to Robert Crais and Dennis Lehane, the Burnside series is a must-read!
Every college needs a coach like Burnside, learned what Nickel Package means. Colorful pictures of LA, and underside of movie studios. Relationship between him and his wife Gail, all written first person. Love the dialogue Burnside has with himself, he does what's right, not what's easy. Can't wait for the next book, hope he's not going to give up being PI.
BURNSIDE REMINDS ME OF THE DETECTIVE IN THE TV SHOW "SPENCER FOR HIRE", THE ONLY THING MISSING WAS HAWK. I ENJOYED THIS EXCEPT FOR TOO MUCH SPORTS TALK, WAY TOO MUCH ALMOST ALL CONVERSATIONS END UP TALKING ABOUT FOOTBALL. UGH. THIS WAS THE PROBLEM IN THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES. I STILL ENJOYED, I JUST SKIP OVER THE FOOTBALL TALK. ;D
There is a 3 year gap from the last book. Burnside's son is already 3 and he, Burnside, was a coach at SC. Back as a PI, a fortune 500 company wants him to do a simple background check. The corporate world is wacko in LA and certainly isn't simple. In fact people are getting murdered and Burnside might be next. Not exactly what he signed up for. Burnside fans will really enjoy this one.
A really good read that I enjoyed very much. A very talented writer that has that special something missing from so many books that have a good story line but lack in drama and reality of verbiage by characters.
As a dedicated reader it is a great pleasure to discover a series that has me asking for more novels. That is the case with David Chill. I am very much a follower . He does a great job and has created a sustainable character in Burnside.
I think this was the best Burnside adventure yet. Lots of suspects..Lots of side stories, close calls, adventure.....And decisions personal and professional that Burnside had to make. Read the book in a few days.
It's fun to see Burnside's evolution from bachelor to family man. I really enjoy all those little domestic scenes. And I sure hope they turn down Applewood Preschool for Marcus!
As usual, what seems like a simple matter, investigating a prominent man for a new position at a movie industry giant, turns into murder and mystery. Burnside's investigation takes him from West LA to the Valley to Orange County. David Chill does a great job of making LA come to life. It's easy to picture the various places from my memories. I learned more about Rolex watches than I ever wanted to know, too.
I can't wait to read what's next for Burnside and Gail.
Bad things happen to bad and not so bad people in this nicely mapped out Los Angeles tale of murder and mayhem in and around the fringes of the entertainment biz. Starting at #6 in the series left me with some questions about the main character's history and motivations, but nothing materially affecting the storyline.
Another excellent book by David Chill. Each time I start to read one of this authors books I wonder if it can be as good as previous ones and each time the answer is the same - yes,yes yes! Always a very good read.
Although part of a series all these books are also good as a stand alone.
Enjoyed this very much. Certainly to be recommended.
On a scale of one to five stars, Nickel Package was a solid five stars in my humble opinion. Although this was the first David Chill novel that I have read it will only be the first of many. Nickel Package was the first Burnside novel for me, but after reading it I want to read the five Burnside novels that preceded it and it's a book that I'll keep in my Kindle library for a long time to come.
David is very good with dialog. He writes a excellent story without using all the sex and bad language that so many of today's author use. Burnside is tough but has soft side as well.
This story took a bit of time to get into. Very detailed in his prior coaching days, which could have been left out. I liked the characters and the plot of this story.
This latest book in the Burnside detective series is the best yet. I loved the complexity of the plotting – kept me guessing all the way to the end. An easy read – quite enjoyable.
I really enjoyed what this author put into this book in the way of storyline, the characters and especially the humor. I am looking to reading more of his books.
