Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga. She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, 合格祈願 (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly. When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.
She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.
Slowly/rapidly becoming the Queen of Yaoi in Europe as well, H.T.'s books do have a certain something, glimpses and breaks in the conventional yaoi narrative that justify success. The sickening bottom-has-to-be-half-forced-each-time (and it hurts and he still sort of maybe wants it -> the feminine/womanly ideal of crying with pain to indicate/induce pleasure) is counter-weighed by the bottom being the older, taller teacher, who rants and raves and hates gays and is just generally amusing/cute in his tantrums (stupidly, I still hope for a simple swap at some point). So, DESPITE that formula upon which MAINSTREAM yaoi depends (since it's for (Japanese) girls yaddayadda), there are enough unique panels to make it good.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Just a fun read overall. Seriously I love how this manga actually has a plot to it but still have nosebleed-worthy scenes in it. PERFECT!
In this volume we got to see more of Morinaga's past which was reaaallllyy exciting! *jumping up and down* So this manga does have depth. We got introduced to Morinaga's brother and Masaki. I CANNOT wait to see Masaki and more of this somewhat mysterious past. We saw enough of it in this volume to get a basic understanding of it but I want to dig deeper, see every single detail of it. AND I BETTER MEET THE "NOW" MASAKI!!! OMG I NEED THAT LIKE NOW!!! OMG!! I want some tension, angst and EVERYTHING ELSE!
And like I mentioned last volume, I reeealllllyy love the relationship between Morinaga and Souichi! LIKE PERFECT! Morinaga practically has this little lewd monster in it. *chuckles* omg I can't! And you know Souichi likes the act.
AND AND AND! OMG IS THAT A HAIRCUTTING SCENE!!!! OHMEEGOD!!! (Okay let me give you a back story to it...) Story Time!So like some of you know, I am in university right now and well, I kind of ship two of my profs together...both guys. Okay, they are not gay...sadly, but I like how they looked together. And last semester one of the got a hair cut and last week the other did too. So my sister and I were thinking up this yaoi scene with them and haircutting. So when this haircutting scene appeared in this manga...I LITERALLY DIED. So I was kind of thinking Morinaga and Souichi as my profs. OMG LIKE HOT! Fin ANYWAY....I LOVEEEEDD THIS!
PS: I love Souichi's little sister :3 So cute and fun to read.
More backstory on Morinaga is good! I would actually prefer the story to just revolve around his family and hometown in regards to his sexuality. Can we do that?
Oh my God I love this series! The dynamic between the seme and uke is so original and awesome. You'd expect the bossy jerky one to be on top, but it's the sweet one he pushes around. And the sweet one is constantly jumping his sempai! I love how sempai is totally cool the next day after he gets forced into sex. My God it's so hot! I like how they keep it real too. You want to beleive that the seme secretly loves it, but he's so upset he doesn't even want to go to school. That just shows what a big hurdle the author has to make this work. We're having to wait for it and I love the ride! x-posted from Amazon
Takanaga Hinako has always been a hit or miss author for me; she's got a few really nice works but others are either too heavy on the comedy or graphic side. The Tyrant Falls in Love lands somewhere in between which makes it a really difficult one for me to rate. I love the characters, it's got just the right amount of humour and a nice enough story. But at the same time, there are a lot of problematic themes and a lot of the story is just contrived and dragged for the sake of adding more sexual scenes.
It's been a long time since I last read it and I remember struggling with it back then already. No matter how you twist and turn it, the story starts off with one of the main characters raping the other. Never mind that he says sorry and the other eventually accepts the apology, I just found it difficult to go along with the story knowing how it started. That being said, I do actually really like the characters, not just the main ones but also all the side cast - my favourite is probably Isogai, the seemingly only straight male character in the whole series who's just hilarious.
The story in itself is also not bad, it does raise some interesting subjects. The main issue, apart from the fact that it starts off with rape, is that I feel the story should have been wrapped up several volumes ago already. There have been several points in the story of character development where one could have drawn the line, but not only are new chapters released at a very slow pace, it mostly just feels like it is drawn out for the sake of drawing more smut. The character development keeps spiralling backwards just for the main characters to be confronted with the exact same issues. It's great that they always talk things out, but they always find themselves back at the same problem.
I really like Takanaga's art, though, but that too isn't enough to keep me reading. For a series of which I had conflicted feelings from the start, I just don't see myself waiting around for yet another volume and hoping it's the last. I've read up to 12 volumes and feel that it is time to drop this one.
Gostei do plot do irmão homofóbico e etc. Deu uma boa história pro morigana além de ser ninfomaníaco. Sempai ainda tá chato, mas acho que daqui a pouco melhora.
After consummating his affections with his sempai, Morinaga is frustrated by Tatsumi’s continuing indifference. Bargaining and wild sex ensues when he tries pushing his luck and Tatsumi’s boundaries. But it isn’t easy when Tatsumi himself keeps changing the rules and definition of their relationships. Are they lovers? Fuck buddies? Friends with benefits? While it is amusing to watch as the power shifts from one man to the other, whether the two of them are lovers is a baffling question, both for the characters and the readers.

It's quite funny to watch Soichi relentlessly insist on not loving Morinaga - while being all pissy when someone just looks at him the wrong way. I loved the background story about Morinaga's first love, about the boy who tried to kill himself and about the secret that drove Morinaga away from his family. It's not just about Morinaga pining after Soichi anymore, the characters are becoming richer, more colorful.
An adorable story! Really peculiar. The characters are relatable and different. And I love their personality developement throughout the series! And the story arcs are captivating. It isn't perfect - it's probably a 4.5 rather than a 5 but honestly, it's one of my favorites so I'm biased!
I cannot say enough good things about this series. The characters are well developed, the story line is interesting, and I will be very sorry to see it end.
