About the author

Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga.
She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, 合格祈願 (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly.
When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.

She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.

Seriously, this Morinaga is like a dog in heat! Doing that to Souichi in right on the sidewalk! But then, it was totally hot... Even if there was a voyeur watching... OMG!

The whole blackmailing thing was pretty funny. Souichi was forced to perform everynight in a karaoke with the voyeur, while Morinaga was thinking sempai was having a affair. Of course he was totally jealous, until Souichi told him he was not doing 'that' with anyone, meaning Morinaga is special to him!

The manga is very explicit, but also sweet and funny. One of the things I like the most is that, while Souichi is the uke in the story, he behaves sometimes like the seme (he is tough, he also has the features of the semes), and while Morinaga is the seme, he also is sometimes the uke (he is insecure, he cries, he looks more femenine).

Shoichi may be a homophobic, but he never reacts like that when he is with Morinaga (except when Morinaga starts to get horny). Too bad there is only 2 OVAS, there should have been an anime with at least 12 chapters.

This volume was the funniest one so far!! It started with a mis-sent package and things just kind of happened. There was "blackmail" and there were jokes. I literally couldn't stop chucking!!!

I think the reason I gave this a 4.5 was because following such an "intense" volume 2 with Masaki situation, I expected something really angst-y but it wasn't. Instead it was a volume with a bit more fun and play to it. Spoiler: Karaoke was involved...and so was Doraemon. :P

I mean it was a bit frustrating to see how the relationship is barely moving. I just want to scream at them "YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT! JUST ADMIT IT!" but you know, they can't hear -.-

Overall, I did enjoy reading it, but it didn't meet my expectations.

Review for volumes 1-12


Takanaga Hinako has always been a hit or miss author for me; she's got a few really nice works but others are either too heavy on the comedy or graphic side. The Tyrant Falls in Love lands somewhere in between which makes it a really difficult one for me to rate. I love the characters, it's got just the right amount of humour and a nice enough story. But at the same time, there are a lot of problematic themes and a lot of the story is just contrived and dragged for the sake of adding more sexual scenes.

It's been a long time since I last read it and I remember struggling with it back then already. No matter how you twist and turn it, the story starts off with one of the main characters raping the other. Never mind that he says sorry and the other eventually accepts the apology, I just found it difficult to go along with the story knowing how it started. That being said, I do actually really like the characters, not just the main ones but also all the side cast - my favourite is probably Isogai, the seemingly only straight male character in the whole series who's just hilarious.

The story in itself is also not bad, it does raise some interesting subjects. The main issue, apart from the fact that it starts off with rape, is that I feel the story should have been wrapped up several volumes ago already. There have been several points in the story of character development where one could have drawn the line, but not only are new chapters released at a very slow pace, it mostly just feels like it is drawn out for the sake of drawing more smut. The character development keeps spiralling backwards just for the main characters to be confronted with the exact same issues. It's great that they always talk things out, but they always find themselves back at the same problem.

I really like Takanaga's art, though, but that too isn't enough to keep me reading. For a series of which I had conflicted feelings from the start, I just don't see myself waiting around for yet another volume and hoping it's the last. I've read up to 12 volumes and feel that it is time to drop this one.

Jesus Cristo. Aqui o abuso sexual foi elevado ao último nível. Todo momento o Morinaga abusa cruelmente do cara lá ( o de cabeça branca) e sinceramente isso seria facilmente uma história de terror bizarra. A autora não sabe fazer uma trope de inimigos para mantes sem ter estupro no meio da narrativa kkkkkk se não fosse um mangá focado na demográfia do Japão! Graças a deus a autora não liga muito pra essa história e simplesmente nunca deus fim pra koisuru Boukun ( o último volume 14 saiu em 2022). Ainda tem mais uns 6 pra eu aturar...

So, apparently the author randomly decided to implement more humour into the story, but it's early 2000s humour that doesn't hold up, so all "comic relief" side characters and scenes are annoying and unbelievable.

Note to future self: if you ever decide to re-read this manga again, consider skipping this volume altogether, it's just filler.

Tatsumi continues to prove difficult and Morinaga continues trying to break down the emotional barriers between them. Does Tatsumi really hate gay sex so much? What I liked about this manga is that Tatsumi still doesn’t consider himself gay. He has zero attraction to other men—which means his growing feelings for Morinaga are based on something other than Morinaga’s childish initial unrequited desire or rampant lust (such as what the younger man went through when he lost his first boyfriend). It means that Tatsumi’s feelings run deeper than such frivolous emotions, suggesting romantic commitment even if he’s still in denial about it. It’s a wonderful change and one that the writer/artist surely will continue in the future.

This manga pushes the boundaries of dubious consent. Souichi always protests - and very loudly, too - whenever Morinaga tries to get him in bed. On the other hand, whenever Morinaga stops trying to get him in bed, Souichi becomes angry! Souichi reacts very violently to everything Morinaga does, but God forbid someone tries to hurt Morinaga - punches fly! So yeah, the relationship between the characters is more than confusing. And especially this volume was rather silly with the "karaoke blackmail" thing...

An adorable story! Really peculiar. The characters are relatable and different. And I love their personality developement throughout the series! And the story arcs are captivating. It isn't perfect - it's probably a 4.5 rather than a 5 but honestly, it's one of my favorites so I'm biased!

Pretty fluffy. I like how yaoi manga sometimes gets all dramatic. When a stalker threatens, Tatsumi and Kanako's home, Morinaga steps in and the drama ensues. It's sweet, really, especially the end.
