Well, I really tried to like Jenessa Jones. She's exactly the kind of character I should love -- the plucky young female professional-turned-detective -- but I finally had to admit I couldn't stand her. The problem, for me, was how overwrought Jenessa got about every man, woman, and child she crossed paths with. The men made her weak at the knees, or gave her shortness of breath, or heart palpitations. She was either determined to love them or push them away because of their "history" together, or simply turn into jelly at the sight of them because of fear or anxiety. She can't get over anything that ever happened to her, which makes it hard for her to let go of anything, whether it's a fight with her dad, sister, aunt, or anyone else. She gets teary-eyed every time she meets a little boy for reasons I won't get into here, because spoilers (in case you're the kind of person who likes this kind of over-the-top emotion all the time and plans to read the books - hey, whatever works for ya). Frankly, she's a nightmare of a person. I don't know how any of the other characters put up with her. Halfway through the second book in this set, I had to cut ties with Hidden Valley and their newly returned prodigal daughter. And good riddance to them.
