This version of The Lion in Glory is a 2016 re-release of a Scottish vs English historical romance previously published under the pen name Shannon Drake in 2003. If my research is accurate, it has been shortened from 560 pages to 356. Most people will likely consider that a positive thing since both are ample time to tell an intriguing tale.
Starting off with the Scotts descending upon Hamstead Heath, an unwalled English fortress ,known for its prized horses, cattle, and sheep, expecting their tribute to Robert the Bruce in coin and hospitality, Lady Christina, the heroine is scrambling to stall for time and a way out, for she simply doesn’t have the payment they seek. Normally her brother, Stephen, would be taking care of this dilemma, but he is being held as an unwilling guest by Rowan, one of King Edward II’s lackeys, for a remark the English king found insulting. Otherwise, Stephen would be dealing with this inevitable showdown. Rowan, who has the King’s ear, also has not gotten over Christina’s rejection of his marriage proposal.
**spoiler alert**
With a surprise twist that turned into a switch-a-roo that had me applauding both Christina and Jamie’s, the hero, cleverness, I knew these two had definitely meet their match. When Christina makes an unexpected demand to be taken as a hostage, Jamie ups the ante by insisting Lauren, Stephen’s fiance, and Alfred, a loyal servant, do so, as well. He doesn’t trust Christina not to put his men in danger, but thinks she will behave herself in order to keep her friends safe. Since Jamie seems to go on and on about how wonderful and beautiful Lauren is, Christina is actually worried he will try to seduce her.
With lots of historical details, you find yourself entrenched in this era and this storyline, folks. Ms. Graham (aka Shannon Drake) not only writes a captivating tale but does so with genuine authenticity. Since I read mostly for the romance, I openly and unashamedly admit I often skim over details not pertaining to the main couple’s romantic plot. This time around I do feel I gained valuable insight into these two opposing kings. Not to worry, however, this review won’t attempt to explain those intricate details. Instead, I will be focusing solely on the relationship between the main couple.
Where to even begin? I absolutely love Christina’s strong, feisty, sassy character, who never backs down, not even from the most difficult of circumstances. Whether it be escaping from a locked room or rushing in to stop a castle assault. It actually irritated me how everyone accused her of having a martyr complex. In my opinion, she was simply trying save everyone else’s behind, regardless of the risk to her own personal safety. What does she get in return? Ridicule, hate, and distrust from everyone, especially the hero.
This is precisely where I had issues with this book. Jamie needs taken to proverbial castle wood shed, my fellow romance book-loving friends. They have their first kiss at 30%. At 40%, he’s in denial over his feelings for her, even after being intimate with her twice. Halfway into it, he still seems more than willing to throw her to the English wolf, Rowan, who is sure to physically harm her. At 54%, he is literally walking around spouting off to anyone who will listen that she is a danger to them all, because she is untrustworthy. Shortly afterwards, he sleeps with her again. Once he suspects she is pregnant, he threatens to hunt Stephen down and kill him if she does anything to prevent having the baby. Yes, he basically accuses her of possibly taking her own life or trying to induce an abortion. He actually has a ransom contract drawn up that keeps her there for a year and a day. Long enough to give birth, wean the child, then still turn her over to Rowan, while Jamie gets to keep the baby. At 77%, he clearly states he will never marry again. You see, his former beloved wife, Fiona, was murdered by the English, so he plans never to love again. At 84%, flat out refuses to ever marry Christina, despite her pregnancy.
Well, after a rather bizarre, frankly not very believable, showdown, Christina dresses as a man and jumps in to save Stephen, some of Jamie’s men, at the same time stopping a castle attack that would lead to certain carnage. She’s quickly put in the hot seat once again and on lockdown, as well. Everyone seems to be pointing their finger at her like she is the devil. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I found this very frustrating.
After Stephen confronts Jamie about deflowering his sister and demands a marriage, Jamie still refuses. It isn’t until Stephen points out if Jamie is killed in battle his child will have no inheritance/honorable family linage to embrace that Jamie is guilted into conceding to this reluctant marriage. At least Christina makes it perfectly clear she isn’t happy about this forced arrangement.
Yes, towards the end….and I mean “VERY” end…Jamie acknowledges his feelings for Christina, and they get their HEA. Though I think it is very engaging read, I found myself resenting the hero talking about honor and loyalty, while treating the heroine, who would lay her life down for anyone in danger, so terribly. Though I rate the writing 4 stars, I have to give the romance element a much lower one. Frankly, this heroine deserved a better hero. I am quite conflicted on how to rate it overall.
Having loved Book 3, Seize the Dawn, I was quite thrilled to be gifted a NetGalley ARC for Book 5 of this series in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion.
