I read this as a kid, so this is definitely nostalgia speaking, but Lewis and Clark's expedition has been one of the three things I've been most interested in regarding US history (the other two being the American Revolution and the Roaring Twenties, and formerly the Civil War, though not as much). This is really the book that introduced me to it, so it gets five stars for that.

A pretty simplistic introduction to Lewis & Clark. Based on the description, I expected to read more from the explorers’ journals. Also, one should not anticipate hearing or understanding the Native American perspective by reading this book. While I understand the author focused this narrative on Lewis & Clark’s journey, as I was reading to my children, I often felt the need to stop and ask them to contemplate the Native American perspective. This same story would likely feel completely different, and I want my 7 and 11 year olds to also empathize with how Native tribes might have felt.

This informational text provides important details about what Lewis and Clark encountered on their journey west. It shares how they met Sacagawea and how they came to achieve each of the big milestones that are still talked about today. The men wrote in journals, which gave Sullivan the actual facts about what happened and allowed him to share real things that happened on the journey. This is a great nonfiction read because it is engaging but also informative!

This book is written for young people, it's published by Scholastic. I wanted it for that very simplicity. I didn't have the time or patience to read a long book with lots of their journal entries. Maybe someday I will get one of those. I consider this a perfect simple primer on Lewis and Clark.

I gave it 4 stars because I just don't like history stuff. I really only read this book for a history project and I needed a good source but it was better than I thought it would be and I actually found it pretty interesting so I thought it deserved 4 stars at least.

Read this aloud to my class. It was interesting, but they weren't really engaged until we started practicing for our Lewis & Clark play. Then it was suddenly their favorite thing. :)

Lewis and Clark by George Sullivan

Book Summary:
Lewis and Clark is a book about two men who explored the western United States between 1804 and 1806 in search for new land. Thomas Jefferson, who was President at the time, recruited them to discover the land of the Louisiana Purchase. The book uses Clarks journal from the expedition. It talks about the people they met and the difficult times they had along the journey. They met probably the most famous American Indian named Sacagawea. She was a Shoshone Indian.

Book Opinion:
What I liked about the book was that it was historic. It actually happened instead of being fictional. I liked how the author used the actual writings that Clark wrote during the journey. One thing that was cool is that I actually have been to one of the landmarks that they visited. It was in North Dakota and I saw the lodges that the Indian tribes used. They were made out of grass, dirt, and wood, and there were pictures of them in the book. One of the things I liked was the many Indian tribes that they met and how they helped on the journey. A serious challenge they had was when they were going up muddy hills using horses to pull the boats up the stream.

Mechanics:
I recommend this book to people who like history, and people who like to read books about real life events. The pictures they used were really helpful for understanding what was going on and because you can see what artifacts and people look like.

I liked this book because it was really interesting and it made you feel like you were there with Lewis and Clark on there journey to the pacific. It really described there journey and how they encounterd indians on the way and how they had to carry there boats on land for miles before they could putt them back in the water because the river would be so dry in some areas. This book starts out with president Jefferson asks Lewis to lead the expiditon and Lewis decides to bring Clark aong with him as the other captin. They are sent to explore the louisiana purchase. They run ito indians on the way and give them gifts they also discover new animals and draw pictures of them in there journals. It also talks about the long winters that they go through and how they had to build cabins to stay in. I would recomend this book to other people because the book is really interesting and it has a lot of good facts in it and the writing in the book really gives you a feeling that you are right beside Lewis and Clark on the journey.

The books are written in a way that is easy to understand and are full of pictures, illustrations, and graphics that are sure to intrigue young readers. The series includes: Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln, Lewis & Clark, Paul Revere, Pocahontas, The Wright Brothers, and Thomas Edison. These are great books to introduce readers to nonfiction.

It's hard to read Lewis and Clark without noticing their spelling, but this time I am poignantly reminded how much happier my seventh grade native-speakers would have been before formalized spelling!
Now I've finished and I have lent it to my husband who is reading a book about the Sioux and had been asking me about them recently!

It was okay to me. It's surprising how early Lewis and Clark die. It will tell you at the end of the book. Their story was pretty exciting to me.RH






The book was pretty good. They went on a 2 year journey from ST. Louis, Missouri, to the Pacific ocean and back again and that was really interesting. KD

I am not sure if this is the same book. I read it when my grandmother lived with my parents before she died. There is a quote in it that I love about how Lewis and Clarks' thoughts combined like salt in water.That might have been an excerpt from one of their journals too.

Sacagawea certainly isn't a primary character on this trip as we were led to believe in school. They also didn't tell us in school that Lewis had mental issues, was an alcoholic, and committed suicide! I want to read other books to see if they support Sullivan's facts.

Not bad, also not great. I was glad that they didn't gloss over the fact that not everyone got a happy ending here.
