Dr. Rachel Galliance has a simple plan. Head to Mars, complete an 18 month rotation and pay the mounting debt. She's claustrophobic and hates space flight, but her family's medical bills come first. But the mission goes terribly wrong, and it becomes clear she may never see her loved ones again.
With her spaceship crumbling and the flight crew missing, Rachel must fight for her life. Stuck with a group of strangers, and stranded in an alien system, the decisions she now makes affect more than she could have ever imagined. Can she survive the RENOVO's destruction?
Don't miss RENOVO, the first in the series by G. Wakeling. If you like Battlestar Galactica, the Expanse or The Martian, this space opera will have you turning the pages. Come check it out!
An enjoyable, fast-paced, and quick read that wears its science fiction trappings lightly - it's not entirely impossible to imagine a similar novel set on an 18th-century sailing vessel instead of a Mars-bound spaceship - and that does a good job of spicing up its narrative with a good central mystery and a nice cast of characters. At times, Renovo does feel a little like an extended video game cutscene: Wakeling's attempts to flesh out his heroine's backstory, and to have the supporting cast speak in authentic-sounding colloquial dialects and accents both end up a little clunky; but it's always crisp and interesting. And then it just stops, as if we get only what the author had managed to write by publication date. Obviously there is more story to be told, but Renovo seems closer to being the first few chapters of a promising novel, than the first novel in a series.
This is, I think, the first author-published novel I've ever bought or read, picked up after reading the author's posts on Twitter. The Kindle edition is very well presented; as good as, if not better than, many professionally-published ebooks.
This book was awesome! Once again, the author has taken me on a rollercoaster ride, where I never know what to expect next. On top of that, the characters are well-rounded, and the worldbuilding and descriptions are excellent. I'm already chomping at the bit to read more; especially with the way the book ended.
*Note: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but this has in no way influenced my opinion of this book, and the comments made in this review are based entirely on my observations while reading the book.
What an awesome start to a new scifi series! I love this mix of lost in space, mystery, and on-ship politics. It's a great premise for a promising series, and Dr. Rachel Galliance is a very interesting character. Her past is entwined with the mystery that had the Renovo drifting through space, and the reason why she is at times in impossible situations. Loyalties will shift and be questions and the future is shaky and far from safe. Lovely read indeed, can't wait for the next installment!
4 stars! I was lucky to win this book in a giveaway in December 2015 and did not have the time to read it until I was on holiday this August. The general idea of the book spoke to me but since there had been a while between winning it and reading it I was a little 'out of it' when I first started reading it. After a few chapters I had that same vibe that I got from watching things like Start Trek and Babylon 5 when i was younger. Geoff did a great job of creating this world on and outside of the Renovo and its characters. Poor Rachel finding she is sort of conned into all of this, her atraction to Yacin who's character makes som questionable decisions and with them clouds her view. Silver/Jax taking the lead with everything happening all at once, people dying and the Renovo falling apart...... Once you think you have figured out where the story goes is takes another turn. I really liked it and will be on the lookout for the second book in this series!
I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi, but I loved this one. It's well written, well paced and it managed to keep me alert till the very end. Not only that, but it's easy to follow and a fun read! Highly recommend it.
A science fiction novel with so many twists that it made my head spin. I really enjoyed the varied cast of characters and the fast paced plot, as they drift through space into the unknown. Very well written, believable and thrilling.
