I Hate Fairyland is about a girl named Gertrude who accidentally found her way into fairyland and has been stuck there for decades.

Don't be fooled by the cute style of this title, it is for adults only. Gertrude is a jaded, violent and bloodthirsty woman trapped in a child's body.

I Hate Fairyland is a challenging book in that it demands a reaction from the reader. Whether surprise, disgust, amusement or a combination of all of those, you can't just flip emotionlessly through the pages.

Not only is the art highly detailed and, sometimes, beautiful, it can also be shocking.

"On the outside, it looked as if she had not grown one day older, but on the inside... she had aged every single minute of her time in fairyland." "Well fluff you, and fluff this map."

There's no vulgar language in I Hate Fairyland, but there are plenty of clever plays on words that imply it.

"Fudge my life."

I didn't like this graphic novel at all, at first. Strangely, it grows on you. And, actually, there are some intriguing twists and turns in the plot that makes it worth your time.

Librarians, be sure to categorize this appropriately in the adult graphic novel section. Again, it is not for the younger set.

If you enjoy this title, you may want to check out Rat Queens. They are similar in that they contain both surprisingly violent and detailed art, and the story is enjoyable.

Once upon a time, a little girl called Gertrude wished she could visit the magical Fairyland - and lucky her, her wish came true and she was whisked away to that enchanted place! But she realised she didn’t really want to be there and asked the benevolent Queen Cloudia to go home. The smiling Queen gave her a map and a cheerful companion to help Gertrude get home in no time at all!

Twenty. Seven. Years. Later.

She didn’t make it home.

Physically Gertrude is still the little girl she was when she first arrived in Fairyland. Mentally? She’s a woman in her mid-thirties who has come to hate Fairyland over the many, many years she’s been stuck there with such an intensity that if she can’t leave Fairyland, she’s gonna burn it to the ground. With a formidable arsenal at her disposal, Gertrude declares total war on Fairyland - those muffin’ huggin’ cutesy pukes are gonna pay!!!

Before his Rocket Raccoon series, Skottie Young was probably best known for his hundreds of baby variant covers for Marvel as well as A-Babies Vs X-Babies and Oz. Fairyland is like Young taking aim at those things and gleefully exploding it with weaponry that’d make Rocket drool!

Fairyland is not a very deep or complex comic - Young doesn’t write those and if you’ve read his stuff before, you’ll know not to expect that. This is more like if The Punisher were a little girl and set loose in a magical kingdom. It’s page after page of carnage. The first thing we see Gertrude do (after the 27 year interval) is aim a cannon at the moon and blow it’s brains out! But the stars saw what she did - time to shoot the goddamn stars outta the sky too!

It’s basically a series of cutesy creations conjured up purely for Gertrude to destroy but, holy mackerel, does it look amazing. Young’s art style is incredible and the pages in this comic are utterly gorgeous, made all the more so by Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s strong, vivid colours.

Seeing how rarely Young gets to draw gore, he goes at it with a fervour - I loved how demented Gertrude looks when she can’t find a gun and decides, fuck it, and goes after the mushroom cops with her bare hands! Also, her companion Larrigon Wentsworth III (think Jiminy Cricket crossed with Tom Waits), goes from being bright and sparkly to strung-out and suicidal-looking - brilliant!

Young mentions in his afterword how his first comics weren’t Marvel or DC, they were MAD and the first wave of comics from the then-newly created company Image - Youngblood, Spawn, WildCATs - from the likes of Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee. And it makes perfect sense that this combination would be Young’s comics origins because the zany comedy of MAD and OTT style of those first Image comics are exactly what Fairyland (and Rocket Raccoon for that matter) is.

I Hate Fairyland is very light on story and characterisation but makes up for it with stunning art and a gleeful dark energy against all things kiddie-oriented. I like Fairyland - kill ‘em all, Gertie!

Rated M for mature audience, malice, murder and mayhem

Hmm... How do I review this one?! This is not your child's comic book, that's for sure. If you look at the cover and grin with an evil glint in your eye, you are in for a treat, my disturbed friend. If, however, the image of the girl holding onto a battle axe dripping with blood and a scene of the wanton destruction of cute creatures with googly eyes has you reaching for your teddy bear, then perhaps this isn't the comic book for you.

With a not so attractive open fracture, black eye, missing teeth and blood spatter, Gertrude enters her dream come true ... Fairyland! Guided by Larrigon Wentsworth III and armed with a map to all the known lands to help her on her way, bruised and battered Gertrude begins her quest to find the key that opens the doorway home.

Twenty seven years later, our green haired, frilly dress wearing dreamer is no longer the sweet little girl we first met in her pink bedroom prancing around with a wand in her hand. Our innocent princess has morphed into, well, let's just say Fairyland has changed her.

With hug and fluff transformed into swear words, locations as cool (sorry!) as Ice Cream Island and weirdly beautiful, colourful scenes of devastation, I am hooked.

It all starts out fine and dandy like any fairy tale: all Gertrude has to do is complete a little quest (should take a day) to return back home from Fairyland. Nope. Poor Gertrude ends up stuck in Fairyland for 27 years which makes her a grown ass woman stuck in a little girl’s body and still unable to go home because she hasn’t completed the mission. Let’s just say she’s now lost all patience, is no longer rational, is all kinds of angry, is creative with cursing, and she’s violent! All of which makes for loads of fun to read contrasted by all the bright colors and adorable characters. Like an acid trip gone wrong in Candy Land this is gory, violent, funny, silly, sadistic and adorable!

The blood-soaked cover should be a clue this isn't a kids book. What it is, is an irreverent, short, graphic novel parody that pokes fun at takes a sledgehammer of mockery to the tropes of Children's portal fantasy stories.

description

What's it really like to fall down a magical portal into another world? It may not be pretty, but I suspect this might be more realistic:

It's hilarious and I love the artwork. Imaginative, colorful and detailed. This blood-soaked, gleefully violent and grumpy story is funny, but just a short morsel. I probably won't run to snap up Vol 2 quickly, but this was a fun dose of humor I could appreciate, even as I love with all my heart the portal fantasy stories it parodies.

Promising start to a new series!
Full of madcap fun, and just subversive enough to appeal.

Plus, the art by Skottie YOung is top-notch, (as expected from the guy who did both "Rocket Raccoon" and the recent "Oz" translations for Marvel.

OK, I'm hooked. This was a nasty little candy coated slice of goodness. And exactly what I needed right now.

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Gertrude who made a wish that she would forever regret. Gertrude wanted to be whisked away to an amazing world, but once she gets sucked into Fairyland, she realizes that some dream worlds are not all they are cracked up to be.

In order to return home, Gertrude must quest throughout Fairyland to find a key that would open the door that returns to her world. Twenty-seven years later Gertrude is still looking for that key, but she hasn't aged a day on the outside. However, inwardly she's become a bitter and jaded adult who would like to nothing more than to see Fairyland burn. Oh, and finally find that key.

Clever, brutal, hilarious, and witty, I Hate Fairyland is like Alice in Wonderland on crack. It's a fairy tale for Gen Xers, and now I need to read them all.

P.S. It also has an endorsement from Neil Gaiman on the cover.

Gertrude is tossed into Fairyland and has to find the key to get out again. Colourful silliness with a lot of swearing and blood. Shrooms are digested, stars are killed and it‘s all rather pointless in an over-the-top fashion. Nice artwork.

It's kind of like reading Deadpool comics, but instead of a deformed degenerate trapped in a world that fear and hates him; it's a forty year old in a child's body, trapped in a fairy world. The art is amazing and I certainly would want to read the next issue.

[Image Comics] FIRST ISSUES: The Good (Full review on the WondrousBooks blog.)

This one is easy. You read it and you keep asking yourself “What the f*ck? What the fu*k?”

It’s hilarious.

The story is insane. The characters are insane. The drawings are insane. Gertrude is… well, batshit crazy.

Let me back up here: Gertrude is this little girl who wants to go to a land of magic. Except when she does, she really wants to go home. But in order to do that, she needs to finish a quest. Unlike the usual stories where even little kids are extraordinarily smart, she isn’t, so she gets stuck in Fairyland for 27 years, by the end of which she has gone absolutely mad and bloodthirsty.

There is also Queen Cloudia(whose hair is, you guessed it, a cloud), a bunch of dead stars, unicorn guts, getting high on mushrooms and so much more.

Yeah, enjoy that.

All kinds of awesomeness

I first heard about this series at the end of last year, and since then, it has been my most anticipated new series of the 2015 year! All I had to go off of was the name of the comic and its cover art: a fun, light-hearted cartoon style and coloring, but with a sinister smiling little girl, who has a bloody double-edged axe and bomb in hand, and is with a group of frightened, beat up and bloodied fairytale creatures screaming in fear around her. Not a clue what the plot was, but sign me up!

One upon a time, there will a little girl named Gertrude. She dressed as a princess, would play with her stuffed animals, and would dream of being taken away to magical fairyland. One day her wish comes true, and she is suddenly swallowed up by a hole in her room and is dropped off in Fairyland.

This is where she meets all the magical, happy, and bright colored creatures - including Queen Cloudia of Fairyland who personally welcomes Gertrude and gives her a map which will lead her on a quest through all the lands, so she can retrieve a key to return home.

Gertrude went of that quest 27 years ago, and she is still looking for that FLUFFING key.

IHateFairyland01_Preview_Page6 IHateFairyland01_Preview_Page7 IHateFairyland01_Preview_Page8

I want you picture the most stereotypical, trope-y version of a story where a little girl is going to a fairyland. That bright happy world, with talking animals, a beautiful princess who gives a map to go on a quest across Peppermint Pike to Candy's Rock, and how happy and adorable that little girl in her own pink dress must feel about the everything. You have something like that in your head? Good. Now I want to take that plot, and all the tropes that came with, and literally throw them out the window! And instead replace that little girl with the most miserable, violent, vulgar, psychopathic, 35 years old women who is stuck in a child's body, and has been stuck in the magical fairy land, looking that fluffing key for 27 years!

Skottie Young takes that classical fairy tale story, and throws it on its head!

Gertrude is one-of-a-kind. Even thought she has been stuck in Fairyland for nearly three decades, because of the magic of Fairyland, her body has stayed the same as the child who first came here, while with her maturity, social, and mental aspects of her have been able to age. And lets just say, Gertrude isn't the least bit happy about her situation.

IHateFairyland01_Preview_Page9

The story starts off with the Sacred Moon narrating her story, but Gertrude quickly looses her patience and tells the him to "fluff off" and then processes to shoot a cannon at the Moon and blow him up. However, there a witnesses - the Stars. Gertrude then pulls out her cannon machine gun and goes on a star killing massacre to prevent word from spreading it was her (With this, Queen Couldia has finally had enough of Gertrude and can longer wait for her to find the key, and decides to call if for some "help" to speed the process of leaving... or - disappearing). She later also attempts to robs a casino (again) and is running from the mushroom-head police force - which she so politely calls "dickheads". I did mention this girl is vulgar, but I guess I didn't say how much of a potty mouth she has XD

Gertrude has a major attitude, is snarky as hell, and is one pissed off women (girl?). She may look 8, but definitely has the vocabulary of an adult. Kind of like how Battlestar: Galactice used "frak", Skottie uses the word "fluffy". So we have saying such as "fluff off", "well, fluff you, and fluff this map", or "hugger fluffer!".

Obviously, this sense of humor is NOT going to be for everyone. Myself, I thought everything about comic was hilarious XD The cartoon coloring and art style, mixed the violence and blood; how Young spun the character of Gertrude. I thought they way he made fun of the whole fairy tale story was genius! It is literally the complete opposite of what you would expect. Also in the issue, he pokes fun at princesses, how all fairy tales have riddles, and other little things in the fairyland world that you would think off.

I'll say it again: the type of humor will not be for everyone. If you don't mind these types of jokes though, then I wholeheartedly recommend picking up issue #1!

What a cute and funny graphic novel. Gertrude has been stuck in fairyland for 27 years! She got swept here when she was only 8 years old and can’t find the key that will get her out of here. Now she is a drunk, potty mouthed, evil little girl. Can she escape or will she be stuck here forever?

It's sort of the best and worst thing I've read in a really long time. It takes all the fluffy bunny madness of fairy and puts a bullet through its head. Literally.

Disturbed and disturbing, an awesome weird kill-fest with a protagonist you can't quite decide if you love or hate her. Mostly, I feel sorry for Larri.

Can't wait to read the rest.

Quick Reasons: this was NOT the story I was expecting; the artwork is GORGEOUS, if a little bit morbid; I absolutely loved the wordplay going on throughout; this chick is snarky, down-to-earth (er...sort of) and hilarious; I think I'm officially hooked

I picked this up on Amazon after watching Riley Marie's GIANT BOOK HAUL on youtube just yesterday afternoon...and decided to pick it up now for a quick, light bit of reading. Also, because why the heckles not?!

This read? Absolutely hilarious! I knew, going in, that this was a bit morbid, a lot dark, and pretty snarky. I did not know, however, that I would fall in love with the main character so immediately. She literally grabbed me by the hair, pulled me face-first into the book, and held me captivated until the very end. She is a grown woman in a child's body, and I giggled like a lunatic throughout the entire journey!

Along with the snark are gorgeous (and, at times, graphically morbid) art panels. I could not tear my eyes away from the page to save my life—the artwork is so vibrant and pretty and eye-catching! I found myself seeking out the tiniest, most minute details, just to make certain I devoured all of it.

And the wordplay? Perfect, snarky, and at times a little grotesque. There were several moments I caught myself giggling, closing my eyes, and then laughing again when I realized the double-meaning of certain words/phrases. When coupled with the brilliant artwork, this story leaps to life.

I definitely recommend this to lovers of witty banter, brilliantly-deceptive characters, and vibrantly morbid artwork. I am not ashamed to say I'll be racing to buy the rest of this series—I NEED this adventure in my life!

Gertrude may hate Fairyland, but I FREAKING LOVED THIS.

Gertrude is a complete bad ass. She may have started out sweet and innocent, but she's been stuck in Fairyland (and in her little girl body) for 27 YEARS. SHE'S FED UP. Nothing will stand in her way of finding the key to get out of this nightmare. Get in her way and it's all

description

I'm talking mass slaughtering, decapitation, the whole nine yards. There is a star massacre for crying out loud. Yes, like stars in the sky. I can't make this crap up. She's straight up crazy by this point.

Besides this amazing main character, I loved what felt like a bazillion other things, too. For the sake of time, I'll just list a few.

1. The illustration
HOLY CRAP. It wasn't just the color that grabbed me (although that is PERFECTION) but every expression, every detail. I loved every single panel - no exaggeration. This was a feast for your eyes...granted that you haven't gotten in Gertrude's way and had them gouged out as a result.

2. Larrigon Wentsworth III aka Larry
Larry is Gertrude's hilarious guide. He's like a super washed up Jiminy Cricket. Except he's a fly. And funny. And doesn't actually have too much a conscience come to think of it...

3. The creative use of swearing by not actually swearing
Some quick examples:
Hugger Fluffin'
Give Two Zips
I feel like Shish!
What's up, Muffin Flufflers?!

4. The humor
There was at least a chuckle out of me at least every five pages.
The panel with Larry waiting for Gertrude to wake up/not be dead had me in stitches.

This may look like cotton candy rainbow unicorn fun, but it is NOT for children. Hopefully the little girl with a crazy ass smile and a blood dripping battle axe over her shoulder on the cover would make this clear.

5 Stars

(3.5/5 stars)

This graphic novel is gory, shocking, and definitely has that gross-out factor. However, I throughly enjoyed this and will be continuing with the series (I already bought Volume Two). Although it is completely unlike anything I ever find myself drawn to or read, I think that's part of the reason I liked it so much. Would I read this subject matter in a 300+ page novel? No. Would I recommend this graphic novel? Abso-fluffin-lutely.

We follow Gertrude, a 10 year old girl who falls through a portal to the magical world of Fairyland. Sounds fantastic, right? WRONG! As any other person who has come to fairyworld, Gertrude must find the key to leave, but unlike most others who found the key in a day, it's been twenty-seven years, and Gertrude, still looking like a ten year old, still hasn't found the key.

This story is hilarious, and while it doesn't feature any specific profanities, it uses words that definitely imply it. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for younger readers.

The artwork in this story is amazing! It's a very colourful book, which I think adds to it's charm and story.

I gave this 3.5 stars because where I enjoyed it and am definitely continuing the series, it felt like the first book in any series always does to me, it was setting up the series, which I understand it has to do. I predict that the series will only get better from here and my ratings will climb along with it.

I wanted to love this book. I had hope. I don't know if it was my mood or what but this story line just disappointed. The character started out completely annoying. I wanted to love her but I felt no connection to her. There was nothing redeeming about her. The humor was bland and just left me feeling bored.
It is a violent graphic novel but that didn't bother me. Okay I will admit that the last chapter was probably the most entertaining part of the book but not sure I'd recommend it based on that.
The animation is great. I loved all the color. It was like a serious acid trip and fun. I just wish that the story line was as good.

Hilarious. I spent the $1 on the Image Firsts copy and I'll probably end up getting the first volume at some point. A girl gets sucked into a Fairyland and has to go on a quest in order to get back home. Fast-forward 27 years and now she is a 30s something women mentally but still looks like the same 6-year-old that got stuck in the fairyland. She is failing miserably to get out of fairyland and has turned a little evil. I laughed out loud 3 times while reading this which is a lot for me in one issue.
