Found in the forest when she was young, Laura Thalassa was raised by fairies, kidnapped by werewolves, and given over to vampires as repayment for a hundred year debt. She’s been brought back to life twice, and, with a single kiss, she woke her true love from eternal sleep. She now lives happily ever after with her undead prince in a castle in the woods.

… or something like that anyway.

When not writing, Laura can be found scarfing down guacamole, hoarding chocolate for the apocalypse, or curled up on the couch with a good book.

Oh, isn't that nice.

Plot

He is evil super villain.

She is good super hero.

He kills by touch.

She heals by touch.

He tries to kill her.

She thinks he's hot.

He can touch her without killing her.

She can be touched by him without dying.

He must have her, keep her, pet her.

She does not want to be had, kept, or petted.

So, now, we are at 50% of the talking points err, book.

She's annoying.

I do wonder if his secret super power isn't pecker willpower? Dude has NEVER intimately touched a woman without killing/hurting.

Sexual frustration?

^^^ You think I'm exaggerating, but, sadly, I'm just paraphrasing.

He (super EVIL villain) has her captive, his pecker has been hard for 60+% and ALL he's done is kiss her twice and make a cuddle agreement. MMKAY, Mr. X evil Vill'age.

And, no, this chick is not wilting virgin hero? She has a sign above her bed explaining...

"THIS RIDE WILL GET YOU WET."

Bottom Line

I love snark. I love para. I love slapstick, spoof, dry humor, etc. This, however, was a fail for me other than a few good lol lines. A couple of laughs surrounded by blah-meh-ehh does not a book make for me.

I do think that younger gals (13-16) may like this storyline. The problem is that the author floated the line between YA & NA. This is not going to appeal to mass NA and Rom-com crowds. It's all but a clean book.

Yet, it has just enough sexual content - one mild sex scene of 'he thrust in and I came apart around him' kinda deal, two mention of dick, one of cock, and cursing language and sexual innuendo that most parents aren't going to find suitable for *13-year-old age bracket.

So, I'm not sure who I could really recommend this to unless you're just looking for a silly read that'll occasionally make you laugh a little. I do suggest a sample before buying as it will give you a feel for the writing flavor.

When did I last read a superheroine story?
I don't even know. Have I?
 photo giphy_zps3dflfhys.gif

I'm a romance girl, but if there's some asskickin' action in there, I'm all for it.

Laura had me from the first page, where Angel explained the inadequacies of her tight superhero outfit with no pockets for her phone. She jabs it into her cleavage, and from then and on the story straight out skyrockets.

 photo giphy_zpskqaybsqu.gif

At breakneck speed, I'm introduced to the hero.
Wait. Villain.
Wait...?

 photo giphy_zpsy2aehfjh.gif
Yeah, that. He's hot as all get-out, dangerous as shit, and freaking just—straight out delicious; did I hear "Book Boyfriend from the roams of superheroes-slash-villains?" Or I could just say, in the words of Twitter: #allthelove

 photo giphy_zpsw7m7jgfl.gif

A last warning to the weak of heart: there isn't just some asskickin' action involved. No. There's a hell-of-alot of asskickin' action involved, and man is it worth it. To get to that end? That beautiful, awesome, my-kind-of end?

I was in heaven while holding my breath through it all.

This was a pretty cool read. I loved the superhero vs super villain love match.

Angel was sassy and kicked ass. Executioner (X for short) was big, bad and broody. She’s a healer by touch and he brings death by touch. Together they counteract each other. Once X realized he could actually touch Angel and no harm would come to her, he knew he would never let her go.

This had some awesome side characters so I really hope that means the author will make this into a series. I want more! Borrowed on Kindle Unlimited.

Light, action-packed read about a H forced into becoming a supervillain finding and falling for the one woman he can touch. I wish the characters and writing were deeper, there is a blink and a you miss it smex scene, but the book is mostly clean.

The book was a bit like a movie script. On the go all the time.
People who like obsessed heroes(H kidnaps h for himself!), snarky h's and superhero romances will like this one.

Well this was ... different.

Superheroes aren't really something I have read a lot about, I normally reserve them for films and in all likely hood that will still be the case even after reading this book. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but it's hard to take it seriously (I'm not sure I'm even meant to here).

"A hero and a villain met, once upon a time. Mortal enemies. And then the impossible happened. A touch, a kiss, a whole lot of fighting ... and then this."

I'm not even sure what to write for this review. The quote above pretty much says it all. This was like a guilty pleasure, fun, witty, over the top, an egotistical bunch of superheroes and a power stealing baddie with a secret lair. This had all the things a superhero novel or film needs including the hot 'kinda bad' X. He gave this story some depth, but not much.

If it was a little darker and the sex more involved I would have rated this a lot higher.

LOVED IT!!!! I was expecting a great story from this author, and that's exactly what I got. Superheroes, supervillains, romance, and action. Angel was a kind hero, but kicked some serious butt when you pissed her off. Executioner, a villain, really had a good heart, but was forced to do some horrible things. I liked him even before I knew he was a good guy down deep. He kidnapped Angel from the superhero headquarters.... I mean, come on!! The head supervillain, Cruel Countess, was seriously demented and just straight up evil. I couldn't wait until the heroes came face to face with her. Great read!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAH MY HEART
5 Touches That Burn (in a good way) Staaaaaars

You know you are screwed when you fall for the bad guy. When none of the bad things he does keeps you from having feelings for him, and everything he does seems to be for the good of someone else.
When said bad guy, is not bad at all, because all the horrible things he is notorious for have been someone else's deed, that he's been forced to be bad, when he didn't want to be and you realize the only bad thing the man has is the wrong people he encountered in his life.

That's my only explanation as to why I've wanted to hug X since the very first chapter.

Just imagine: a man hurts everything he touches. He has never fully let go, always holding back - barely. Every single person he's ever been with has suffered at his hand because he can't do anything about it.
He feels lonely, he is utterly alone.

Plot Twist: he finds the only person that is immune to his power. A Healer .

Quiz me this: what would a man want to do with the first woman he couldn't willfully burn?
[...]
He leaned in, so close I could feel his cool breath against my skin. His hand went to my cheek, his fingers trailing over the skin there. His expression full of wonder. Oh, and lust. A crapload of lust was there as well. He glanced down at my mouth.
"Don't," I warned him.
He smiled. And then his lips met mine.

His wonder, his surprise, his happiness when he realizes the woman he has underneath is okay, not burned, not suffering at his hand, immune to the power that is also his curse.
He is like a kid on Christmas morning.
And of course Angel has no escape, he is going to try every trick to make her his, and she is going to fall, because in the end, there is nothing evil about X.

This guy. I swear I can't even.
My heart bleeds for him, for the loneliness you could feel just reading his thoughts, his insecurities, his hopes.

Angel is perfect, funny, happy and hot headed, I loved her. Her power brought her to seek those who needed healing, and she recognizes in X a man who is in desperate need of saving.

It's a short, sweet, funny love story, and I couldn't have expected any less from Laura Thalassa.

I feel like this may potentially get me hated and scorned by many.
But honestly guys, I really wasn't a big fan of this book.

"Had I known I was going to face down death today, I totally would've bought myself the slurpee."

*sighs of dismay* exhibit A of why I didn't like this book.
However, before i go too much into that, let's talk about the plot....

Angel is superhero, whose superpower is to heal.
The Executioner is a supervillain, whose superpower (you guessed it) is to kill.
When binaries collide, the results shock everyone.
The Executioner, cold, ruthless, handsome can finally touch a person without mortally disintegrating their innards.
Problem is, his boss- The Cruel Countess, demands the one thing he's ever wanted in his life.
And darn it, he'll do whatever it takes to make her his.

umm...ughh...uuuhhhh.
I feel awful, but I would honestly and probably rate this as a 1.5 star.

This is weird for me, because Laura Thalassa's Vanishing girl series is my Ultimate NA series. Not even kidding, she had set the bar for me with those 2 glorious books.

Which is why when i read this one, I couldn't help but wonder what the heck this was.

Seriously? supervillains and superheroes. No, you know, that's fine if you wanted to take this premise. Totally rock it out, but the whole freaking time Angel annoyed me.

The love part came so quickly, almost bordering on Insta-love.

Angel would says things like:

"I was a superhero, damn it!"

It honestly felt like she was more prone to hissy-fits than actually, well, saving the world. She came across as so juvenile, I would not even trust her with my cat.
I didn't like her at all. At first I thought she was cutesey but that wore off quickly and became darned-annoying,

The executioner is practically a lovebug, one of those cases that he's a villain because he had no choice (which is fair enough) but that made the plot so darned generic.

This is your fault Thalassa, you showed me your genius with the vanishing girl series and anything less than that glorious standard just doesn't appeal to me.

But in all honesty, it was so freaking I've-read- this- before type of book! It annoyed me so bad!
there's a group of side kicks and a mad dude who had prophecy abilities.
the 'angel' of the group falls in love with the 'bad-ass villain'.
you get my drift?

I'm sorry, I know many liked it but i didn't.

Stay Awesome!

Death and his Angel

Real rating: 3.5⭐︎

I have been rereading books from summer and spring 2019 so I can finally write out reviews for them. I had forgotten about Reaping Angels until I recently read another superhero romance.

This book has to be judged for what it is: a silly, light-hearted, mostly clean superhero and her supervillain romance—there's no reason why a teen could not read this book; it's not terribly graphic in its one sex scene. There's nothing deep here, from the plot to theme. It's simply good, clean—and eye-rollingly cheesy—fun.

It's quite an oddity from the rest of Thalassa's work, which in my experience trends dark and Very Adult. Even the style RA is written in feels young and frivolous. I do wish that someday Thalassa might revisit this universe. Some of the side superhero cast is really interesting and would make for darker, more tormented stories.

So. Do not look for anything deep or particularly steamy here and it should go well.

This book was not AT ALL what I expected. Actually, I'm not really sure what I expected. But I know this was not it.

I've read some of Ms. Thalassa's other books, and her female leads tend to be a bit on the sassy and snarky side, but Angel takes the cake. Seriously, I choked on my gum, I was laughing so hard. I mean, being a superhero is rough, so I guess you need a little sass to get you through the day.

The Executioner, or X, as he's called. He's a supervillian with a heart, if that makes sense. He kills people with his touch, so his life has been pretty lonely. But all that changes when he realizes he can touch Angel and not kill her. His whole psyche changes after that, and I felt myself grinning with giddiness to see these two work out their issues. Honestly, I didn't know how Ms. Thalassa would do it, because it seemed so impossible. But this author sure has some tricks up her sleeve!

Yeah, yeah, I know. Superhero romance book. BUT seriously! Read it! Because...well, yeah. Just do it.

You know when you eat something really sweet and then something less sweet and it tastes sour? It’s just kind of bad.

I read Pestilence by the same author and then this because I was addicted to the story. Now I’m sad, but War is coming out soon so I’m still curious!

Review: I came across this book on GR the other day by accident and was honestly amazed as I hadn't known that it had been released!I am a big fan of Laura Thalassa's books and while I was (im)patiently waiting for The Queen Of Traitors I decided to start reading this. The cover and blurb also played a large part in that decision.I mean, how many superheroes+supervillains books do we come across in NA these days? The only other book even remotely similar would be Equal Parts by Emma Winters.

The premise is pretty simple with an urban fantasy setting where superheroes like Angel work for the LA supernatural police department and fight against supervillains. One such villain is The Executioner or X, who is literally able to kill people with his touch. At the beginning she falls for a trap set by him, and when he tries to kill her he finds out that he can't as her healing abilities negate his touch. He is obviously shocked. And what does he do next folks?

Yes.He kidnaps her and takes her to his home.*smirks*
He is ecstatic to find someone he can finally touch and he is not going to let her go now that he's got her.Though their relationship starts off rocky, Angel is still attracted to him though her common sense warns her against it.
“He’s a horrible, evil person. Don’t be one of those girls that forgives a guy his shitty personality just because he’s gorgeous.”
In the meantime they also have to deal with the Cruel Countess who wants to steal Angel's powers and Angel's superhero friends who try to rescue her.

Though the world building wasn't as well developed as Laura's other books her characters are always spot-on.Angel is witty and sarcastic while X is broody but sweet at the same time.Angel's superhero friends are a good addition. The Cruel Countess was the typical psychotic villain who is out for power.Though I loved the interactions between Angel and X , I felt like the book could have been longer and the relationship more developed.I would definitely suggest this to all Laura Thalassa fans and anyone else looking for a witty superheroine. ;)

This was a fun concept, with fun tropes like enemies-to-lovers, and villain-becomes-the-hero. The idea that he kills everyone he touches - EXCEPT FOR HER - is really engaging. However, you can definitely tell that this is one of the author's older works. It's pretty rough, mediocre writing, and I didn't love the final act. I honestly feel that a rewrite and some repackaging could take this book to the next level. It has a lot of potential. Over all, it was a super quick read, a nice palate-cleanser between books. The MMC makes a lot of dumb decisions towards the end that made no sense to me.... it was like he was trying to be caught and killed? And his POV chapters went away in the final act as well... Felt like they were just missing. But anyway. Easy read. Fun ideas.

Okay I don't normally go for books with superheroes but I actually really enjoyed this. It was short, cute, and a perfect late-night read to get me out of a reading slump :) Angel's humor and X's dark persona were absolutely perfect and honestly this was just a real quick but fun light read! I love Laura's work and it's nice to know she can write short (almost) rom-coms as well as epic fantastical series.

Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = Mostly 1st person, FMC & MMC, one 3rd person for Madman. They are quite short and switch often.
Main Characters: Angel (FMC) is a 23-year-old superhero with the ability to heal anyone and anything. I liked her. I loved how she fought back against the Executioner (MMC). She’s also hilariously sarcastic.
“A gun?” Derision dripped from my voice. “You can kill people with your touch and yet you carry a gun? I’m judging you.”

The Executioner, in real life, would need some serious help and I would never support this relationship. However, in this story… it’s cute and funny. He is delusional and literally counting on stockholm syndrome. He’s so easily domesticated and just wants to love on Angel, it’s like, his whole thing.
She’s in my arms. Accepting this. Accepting me. Ah, I could die like this. Without thinking I leaned down and kissed the crown of her head, causing her to nestle even deeper into my chest, like she might burrow herself a home. That was fine by me. More than fine.
He’s also incredibly cluelessness on how to deal with Angel because he’s always been alone, and it’s unbelievably endearing. Despite that soft side, I was obsessed with his villain attitude.
“We’re going to play a little game called ‘I ask and you tell.’ Every time I ask you a question, you answer honestly. Every time you do otherwise— and I’ll know when you lie— I take off a finger. “Simple rules. Got it?”

Side Characters: There are a lot of other superheroes and supervillains, but we don’t spend much time with them. We met X’s brother, Marc, whom I felt horrible for. He didn’t blame X for the past, but he still got left behind. Madman was my favourite side character; he reminded me of the mad hatter, especially the version from the end of Heartless.
Madman began to sing, “Angel and X- ie, sittin’ in a tree. K- I- S- S- I- N- G.” Someone elbowed him and whispered for him to shut up.
No, Madman, please keep singing, I love you <3

Plot/Story: This book is a short standalone. It moves very quickly. The main villain is the Cruel Countess, and she’s now kidnapped Angel’s sister in an effort to get to Angel. My heart dropped when X explained her power. I liked the world, where superheroes and supervillains are just people who exist in this world (like the show The Boys). There wasn’t a lot of world-building, and in fact, I was kind of confused on what everyone could do half of the time.

Romance: In the beginning, there was a very real fear for me when it came to the romance. I’m always down for an ‘obsessed with her’ MMC but we started at ‘she’s THE only choice’ and needed to evolve to ‘she’s MY only choice’ within 200 pages. X worked really hard at that for me, which I appreciate.
She laughed, the sound pleasing. Need to make her laugh more often.
It wasn’t exactly enemies-to-lovers because they didn’t exactly hate each other. They fight, it’s funny, he’s sarcastic, she’s a bad bitch, and I loved the dynamic despite the kidnapping.
As soon as Angel caught sight of me, she cocked her arm back and hurled the vase at me. I caught it with a grunt. Girl had an arm on her.
This wasn’t very much spice in this book, either. It was surprising for me since I’ve read the author’s Four Horsemen series and just… whew. Their scene at the end of the book was adorable.

General: I know it’s first person but there was an overuse of the letter ‘I’ in here for Angel’s POVs when X’s didn’t have the same problem. There were also some errors like “lighting bolt” instead of “lightning” or “whisk” instead of “risk” or “deal with your herself” instead of “you”. Not enough to really bother me.

Overall:
And that was why people didn’t piss me off. Because angels, sweet as we are, do from time to time… Fall.

I don't like enemies-to-lovers trope. I swear that whenever I saw a book being pitched with this theme, I usually turned them away. But there is just something about Laura Thalassa's books that made it so easy to read.

However, in this case, although I fell in love with the characters very early on, it fell flat in the end. But this shows just how much I'm becoming to love this author's works.

"Had I known I was going to face down death today, I totally would've bought myself the slurpee."

This book is...just good. I felt like I read it very quickly, and the romance was not a slow burn at all. It had the element of hate to love, which was nice, but there wasn’t as much angst as I wanted. I liked this book, but I loved Pestilence and Rhapsodic more. I recommend those if you want to read a Laura Thalassa book. Also, shameless self promo, I made a book twitter and it’s @/readbymia ! i follow back :)

So sweet it’s spicy

Omg how cute is this story!!! Angel is adorable and I loved living in her head. “X” was just so dark and broody but loved how vulnerable he was in finally being able to have contact with another person. Loved this one so hard but Laura I need a sequel or like 10 epilogues. I need more Angel and X like yesterday.

This is a cute read, and I had fun with it. I liked the characters and thought the scenario had a lot of potential. Overall, though, I felt the jump from mortal enemies to understanding to love was a little too fast to be convincing. Still, for a fluffy romance with lots of action and a bit of superhero fun, this works.
