The Captured Dead

Rate this book
"The Captured Dead" is a novelette set in Comancheria in 1874. William Tecumseh Sherman, the hero of the Civil War is in the American West to get 'renegade' Indians on a reservation or kill them. One band, lead by the shaman Isatai decide to summon the dead to fight Sherman.

“Jim Cherry's The Captured Dead is an innovative and eerily diverting tale based on the conflict and mass murder, both of man and beast, that formed the dreadful essence of mid-19th century American history. The story centres on the almost mythical mercilessness of General William Tecumseh Sherman; a characteristic that ensured his Civil War victories and was employed in later campaigns to suppress Native Americans, either by restricting them to reservations or through extermination. Cherry's tale takes place in these later years of frontier conflict, when echoes from Sherman's past mental breakdown and the potent mystical practices of his Indian enemies make a literally haunting combination.”

I was born November 13, 1960, and experienced all the kaleidoscope impressions of childhood, my Mother reading to me, acting out all the parts and me seeing the pictures in my head. When I was 5, I danced on the corner and made it rain. I’d discovered power. It was child’s play.

I soaked up the idealism of the times and read everything that came my way. At 13, I decided I wanted to be a writer. I wrote, usually copying the style of whatever I was reading. At 19, I burned all those journals and essays. I increased my reading and started to learn how to write. Starting slowly with slogans, then sentences, then poems, and finally paragraphs. I traveled, wanting to live the life of the writers I read about, New Orleans, Germany, Los Angeles, all stops for adventure.

My poems starting getting published in the 90’s, along with a couple of short stories, I wrote my first novel Becoming Angel after returning from Germany where I had gone to get dumped by a girl. I wrote the book in six months writing six revisions, one a month. I wrote Stranger Souls, a book of short stories and it turned out to be a examination of the different elements of my personality, the farther I went in, the further I reached out. And The Last Stage is a look at our fascination with fame.

For a short story such as this, which can be read in one sitting, Jim Cherry manages to pack a lot of stuff in. Set in Comancheria, 1874, this novelette blends fact and fiction in a masterful way, where you’ll find: the tortures of the soldier’s human psyche, the atrocious attempted annihilation of the Native Indian, realities of the Civil War, concepts of mysticism and questions about insanity. You’ll also find a damn good little ghost story.

A short story set in the open desert of the old west. A military man faces phantoms sent to him seemingly out of the land itself, their presence enigmatic and troubling. Against the backdrop of violent skirmishes, he attempts to grapple with how real these apparitions are, and just what that might mean.

Enjoyable short with an evocative setting and an emphasis on the psychological aspect of hauntings.

The Captured Dead is an entertaining short story. Set in Comancheria 1874, based on fact with a bit of fiction written in. This was a great, "quick read", to take your mind off of the boredom from sitting in the waiting room for a doctor's appointment.
The story describes the torment that General Sherman goes through, while leading his troops in the extermination of the Indians. It captures his thoughts and feelings, along with the shroud of mystery from the medicine man.
Descriptively written, you can truly visualize the scenes. I could almost smell the smoke from the camp fires! I enjoyed reading The Captured Dead, a short story you can follow from beginning to end.
I hope to see more of these short stories from Jim Cherry in the future!!!!
